I am obsessed with Ben's Fast Food! My work place ordered it for lunch one day. When I saw the name "Ben's Fast Food", I must admit I was a bit turned off. I thought to myself, "Aw man, I don't want to have fast food, I want something healthier." Boy was I mistaken. After looking at the menu I quickly realized this is the opposite of fast food, although it is fast! I ordered the chicken bowl that day and was hooked. I normally don't like the typical "healthy foods" but this was GOOD. The ingredients are fresh, hearty, and plentiful. It's also at a really affordable price for what you're getting! I can never finish the bowl and is usually two meals for me. My SO has gotten the chickpeas and potatoes bowl and enjoys it as well. The location is easy to miss as there's no signage on the exterior. Once you're inside you can order at the kiosk. We usually place the order on DoorDash for pickup and it's ready within 10 minutes. I was looking for something healthy and tasty for lunch so I did a quick Yelp search and seen a bowl. Opened the menu, seen it was reasonably close to where I was. So I ordered through Yelp and headed over. First, I had no idea about a San Mateo Food Mall. Its kind of a strange set up and I wasn't sure I was in the right place? I pulled up at the restaurant on the corner questioning who I even ordered from? I see a photo of the food mall and think oh ok this is weird. I drive up and down the road like 6 times to finally get a parking space and go in, no one is around again weird. There is self serve kiosk type things. Then I refer to my phone and my order or ok my email (my fault!) tells me the locker number and click to open, cool. Was looking for a yummy, quick dinner after my workout class and Ben's fast food definitely caught my eye. It was affordable, open late, and convenient. We were a bit confused about where it was located, but we later figured out that it was in a ghost kitchen location. Thankfully the person at the front desk was kind and she directed us where to order. I ordered the Chicken Bowl with the chipotle sauce and it was ready in less than 5 minutes! There was no where to sit so I took the bowl home to enjoy. For "fast food" this bowl was delicious! It had crunchy veggies, flavorful chicken, and the sauce was a really good addition. Only thing was the bowl was basically all rice and the rice was hard, so next time I think I'll opt in for the option with more veggies. We regularly order from Ben's for work and it feels like I'm eating healthy when we do. Portion size is good especially for the price. I usually get the hearty pork shoulder bowl but today I got the chicken mixed bowl and added avocado for an additional $1.95. As you can see in the picture, that gets you about 1/2 a very small avocado and when you order online and choose to add avocado, it says "sliced up real nice" but what I ended up is really two chunks not sliced at all. Another win for San Mateo dining. Eating out is so hard when you have dietary restrictions. I recently have to cut diary and soy out of my diet and let me tell you those ingredients are in literally EVERYTHING. I didn't have anything to cook for dinner and I was dreading going to the grocery store. I scoured Yelp for places that had more than just one item on their menu to accommodate my restrictions and happened upon Ben's Fast Food. I was able to order delivery which was an extra plus. I got the wagyu mix bowl with the chipotle sauce. SO good! I couldn't believe the things I was eating didn't have any soy or dairy in them. What a Trip! I yelped for a salad and found a place that looked delicious. The problem was I thought maybe it closed down because the directed location was full of auto shops. So I drove about 2 min and looked again. Now, another restaurant with great pics pops up 1st- At the same address?? This time I realize I'm at the right location and go back. 2 ppl waiting in the otherwise empty room directed me to the online ordering screen. We were all lightweight questioning if we were in the twilight zone. But soon after, door dashers began to walk in and make the system clear. Once our food was ready we received a text to grab it from a locker. I was pleased that my food looked and tasted like the pictures. It did not disappoint. The only thing is not seeing any humans around to assist with service like napkins or extra sauce. Nothing left out to assist Myself either. A very impersonal but descriptive Fast Food experience. Best takeaway option for vegan gluten free (celiac friendly) food that I've found. Have gone back several times and the food is consistently delicious. I must admit, I was prepared to give BFF five stars simply for the fantastic response to the 1 star review on here. A masterclass on how to respond to a shitty review(er). My wife and I ordered last night after opting for a healthy meal with which to quench our munchies. We were expecting to like it based on the fact that we would be eating well and not feeling crappy about ourselves for eating too much under those circumstances. But neither one of us was expecting to like it nearly as much as we did. "Love" instead of "like" is not a terrible overstatement to how we felt eating our dinner, and we vowed to order from BFF again (and again) in the not too distant future. As for that 1 star review, it baffles us both. Sure, everyone can have their own opinion, but one should think twice before giving a place that's simply trying to make a living just 1 star. Especially a place with a mission as fantastic as BFF's. Even if you think their food is boring, there is absolutely no denying that they are providing an incredible service, trying to feed people good (healthy) food, in a world where everyone has so many different dietary needs and people are oftentimes left with few options because of those needs. But still, the "boring" argument fell flat on its face with us. Every single point made in that review was 1000% negated by our meal. And BFF's response and explanation totally made sense and was in line with our experience. Even without the sauces, the food was both tasty and refreshing/healthy. And yes, even more so with the sauces added. We tried four sauces, and while we each had our preferences, they were also a big hit. You want more "flavor" or more calories? Add more sauce. Also, my wife, who ordinarily adds salt to salted crackers, agreed that there was no salt needed. Our food was seasoned perfectly. Because we actually read the 1 star review, we ordered the smoothie, curious to see if that reviewer had some validity to her words. Spoiler alert... she's full of shit. Had we not read her review and its response, we would have never guessed that the smoothie wasn't made right then and there. It was tasty and we both loved it (though I'm generally the person in our relationship most likely to order a smoothie, my wife savored it to its last drop). My initial thought when the food arrived was "okay, portions probably a little small." But we ended up having left overs and we were both full and satisfied. We did not need any more food, and truthfully could have stopped eating a few bites prior. Did I mention we had the munchies?! The only time I eat a lot is when I have the munchies. And the fact that the smallish portions satisfied me even then is a huge testament and very much appreciated. And the cherry on top are the prices. They are beyond reasonable. In fact, it's really fucking cheap! It truly is Fast Food prices (not McDonald's prices, but the kind of prices you would expect (but NEVER get) from a healthy fast food joint). So if you're the kind of person who eats a ton, you can order twice and still get a good deal. Very happy to have this new place in our neighborhood and wish them much success. Food is great, taste and good portion size. I feel the meat portion has gone down considerably the first time I ordered. I have ordered from Ben's about 4-5 times in the last month and continue to do so as its easy pickup and healthier. The one star is taken out just because of the portion size. Also the ghost kitchen concept is great but the area and ambience is sketchy. I understand that is to keep the cost down. Lastly service wise I am not sure how to feedback to the store if they messed up the order or missed some sauces which has happened in the past. Unless you order via some third party you might be able to get some $ back but I try to order through their website so as to help the business but there needs to be some feedback/refund place on their website to let them know. I love Ben's Fast Food! Due to my current dietary restrictions (gluten free/dairy free) I was searching for meal options and came across BFF. Boy did I immediately get excited at the idea that everything including the sauces are GF/DF, is healthy and sounds amazing. You either order online and go to the San Mateo Food Hall which is a shared ghost kitchen space to pick up the order, or you can go there and order from a kiosk. I've done both and it's so easy and fast (your order is ready in about 10 mins). I opted for the chicken hearty bowl with added side of slow-roasted chickpea & potatoes and the lemon thyme sauce. Sounds bomb and upon first bite, oh my goodness it was amazing! The chicken is slow cooked, tender and flavorful, the millet and rice with all the fixings (veggies, sunflower seeds, picked red onions, cucumber) work in harmony, with that lemon thyme sauce which kicks it over the top. What I really love is the crunch from the sunflower seed, and that each bite is nourishing and I don't have to worry about any bad ingredients being present. I've since tried the slow pulled pork shoulder and the smoky chipotle sauce, both are excellent. I think next time I'll get extra sauce because it's so damn good! If you're out of ideas on a meal that's fast healthy and delicious, think BFF! You won't regret it. read more
