Tried out BentoLicious recently after hearing about it. I was excited for a Taiwanese place in the area. It can be a bit tough to find, so look for The Organic Coup and this restaurant will be just across from it. I went with the railroad bento because I love Taiwanese style fried pork chop. It came with the tea leaf egg and a slice of beancurd, mixed vegetables, and for the last side, I chose the eggplant. Unfortunately, the pork chop did not meet my expectations. It lacked flavor and did not taste like what you'd expect at other Taiwanese places in the south bay. The eggplant dish was decent and so was the egg. It would have been nice to choose a different side other than the mixed vegetables though, or to swap the space on the tray. My friends like the basil chicken so perhaps I'll try that next time. read more

Taste like home, right level of oil, salt, and healthy choices with plenty of flavor. We ordered Basil Chicken, ichiban Fried Chicken Breast, and Railroad Bento. All three bentos were unique in flavor. The portions are huge for one serving. Amazing! I will recommend it for family and busy individuals. There are seating but expect to make it to go because it's crowded even 30mins before closing. They take credit cards and cash. The staff are very friendly. A good place to grab lunch. Tasted like home cook meal and the good part is, there are plenty of varieties where u can mix and match whatever you like. I think they might be a bit on the pricy side, but hey, it's during the pandemic, i'm just glad they are open when i really wanted some taiwanese food. Bento boxes are a God send to offices in the area and BentoLicious without doubt, delivers awesome Taiwanese bento boxes. It is hard to find a hearty meal under $10 these days, yet BentoLicious offers scrumptious Ichiban chicken with three sides atop a steam rice. Now that's a great deal if you ask me! I am so enamored with the Ichiban chicken, I have not yet tried the other protein offerings. Oh and the salt and pepper pumpkin side? Absolutely delicious. I'd give this place a 4.5 so rounding up to 5. I was pleasantly surprised to find a Taiwanese bento place in Pleasanton! The portions here are pretty sizable. They offer online order for pickup if you want to buy family sized meals, but we just walked in to order in person. Right now with COVID they have hand sanitizer at the entrance and have markings on the ground to indicate 6+ ft distance between customers. Upon checkout, they have pens separated by clean and used (for signing receipts if you pay by card). They also take Apple Pay which is super helpful for contactless payment. The owners speak both mandarin and English, and are very friendly. The standard bento box includes 1 entree and 3 sides. I haven't had a side dish that I didn't enjoy from here! They have a fried pumpkin dish that I think might be relatively new that was really good, crispy on the outside and the pumpkin was soft on the inside. But really, you can't go wrong with any of the side dishes. My husband got the eggplant tofu which was cooked well with a sweet vinegary sauce. This is a small family-owned business that's worth supporting! I hope they continue to do well in the current climate. read more

Yum! Picked up 4 bentos to feed the family tonight and it definitely hit the spot. We enjoyed the fried chicken, pork chop, beef & fried fish mains. Happy to have a great selection of sides too - veg was done just right (not soggy), eggplant was delicious, mapo tofu just right for the kids, brown hard boiled eggs (my kids' favorite). Someone posted about Bentolicious and it ended up in my Instagram feed and instantly peeked our curiosity for dinner. This is exactly how social media is supposed to work. With that being said, it was my first time to this spot. When I arrived at 6:30pm, clearly others saw the same post because there was a line 4 deep. The owners were really friendly and I ended up with 2 bento boxes and 1 order of the special of the day - Fried Chicken Wings ! The best part of our purchase were the wings hands down (can this become a perm item?) because they were made to order (12 minute wait) and still crispy when they got home (10 minutes away). Came here after a long day in Pleasanton. I definitely enjoy this concept of bento boxes much more than the standard Japanese ones. This place looks family run and had a good amount of people when we went. Got the fried chicken bento with Bok Choy, Cabbage, and the Tofu as my sides. Chicken was light with a flavorful and crisp outer. The vegetables were good too, slightly salty with a nice flavor of garlic. The tofu had a little bit of the numbing spice but was quite bland. Would say their sides need some more seasoning but overall a very solid place. Would come back to try other things and do recommend checking this place out! read more

Bentolicious is one of the rare taiwanese restaurants out there in Alameda county! Meals are mostly bento style, with the dishes in heat trays. However don't let that deter you as the dishes themselves somehow still taste fresh! I ordered a lb of fried chicken cutlet and wow it reminds me of the homemade fried chicken I ate growing up especially with what appears to be tapioca flour breading?! Finally got to try this place. I have heard great reviews about this place. And I wasn't disappointed. We came in for brunch to get some good Taiwanese cuisine. Our kids liked the tea egg and the railroad porkchop and ichiban Fried chicken. My hubby like the Chiayi chicken. It's shredded chicken that comes with a lightly-seasoned sauce that goes very well with white rice. For first timers, it's easy to figure out what to do. You start with the far left to indicate how many bento boxes you'd like. Then you'd choose the main dish to go with the white rice. Come to think of it, they didn't offer any alternatives to the white rice. They could potentially have brown rice or quinoa . The bento box comes with three side dishes of different kinds of veggie or the tea egg. There's so many to choose from and they're all very tasty. I especially liked the fried squash and the stir-fried Napa cabbages. I would wanna go back to try their other dishes. They have the 3cups chicken/tofu, black bean spareribs, and others. Service was fast and efficient. And matched with reasonably priced food that comes in generous servings. It's no surprise that this place has a lot of clients despite not being so visible. Love that they even answer the phone in Mandarin - that's how you know it's for real LOL There's no point in calling ahead to order as they have dishes set up that they'll scoop into your bento for you. I think BentoLicious is kind of a corny name but it's easy to remember and that's probably why they chose it. This is Asian fast food and it's made up of traditional Japanese Bento boxes but a more modern version. I'm told that this is a Taiwanese Bento Box format and originated with the Taiwan Railroad in it's task of feeding workers quickly and economically. Once you enter, you get in cafeteria-like line and tell the servers behind the serving counter what you want. Everything fits into these simple plastic Bento Boxes. Per the posted menu at various locations around the dining room, you simply choose an entree and 3 sides and the servers will assemble them into your Bento Box. This is all served on a bed of rice. You can, then, proceed to the cashier and order your drink and pay for your meal. It works well and the line moves very quickly. There are 5 entree choices plus : Fried Chicken Breast, Basil Chicken, Chiayi Organic Chicken (don't know what that is), All Veggies, Pork (called Railroad) and a Daily Special. There over about half-a-dozen side dishes to choose from. These side dishes vary from day to day. All the completed Bento Boxes are priced at $9.50 - $10.50 depending upon the entree selected. The very nice guy asked if I really wanted bitter melon. I did! Maybe I would love it today. I did not. I still hate bitter melon. However, it looked so good sitting there in the tray that I really wanted to like it so I tried it again! Yuck. The food here is homestyle delicious. It reminds me of what friends cook when I go to their homes. I thought about the pork chop, but instead went with fried chicken. I also had tofu and vegetables. Hidden gem in the back of a strip mall. Taiwanese style "Panda Express" lunch boxes you can pick what entrees and sides you want. Entrees are rice with meat choice (pork chop, fried chicken or fish, basil chicken) and your pick of 3 sides (veggie centric- bok choy, eggplant, fried squash, tofu, broccoli). Food is fresh and cooked in small batches. Around $15 a box, so it better be good. read more

food is good, portions aren't great for the price. we had the ichiban fried chicken, railroad pork chop, and the chef special ginger chicken. we were hesitant to get the ichiban, because it's chicken breast, and usually restaurants overcook the breast. it IS overcooked, but the meat was so thin, that it didnt matter too much. flavor-wise, it was the best protein item we ordered. the pork chop tasted very similar to the ichiban, but without the breading. the cut was also very thin the ginger chicken leg quarter provided the most protein, but it just tasted like a rotisserie chicken. it was a bit salty and the ginger was almost nonexistent. if you go to a typical chinese restaurant, you'll probably get more for your money. read more

Fast service with a smile. I was a firstie here and they were very kind and informative as to how ordering worked. I went here on a Friday at lunch time (12:15pm). It was busy but steady and not backed up. I liked that you could see the food as you order it and they give you multiple options to choose from. I only stood in line for about 3 minutes and was out in under 6 minutes. Quick! I had the fried chicken, tofu eggplant and mushroom tofu. I loved the eggplant and the sample of the fried pumpkin I got. The rice was perfect, and again, the service was unbeatable. The chicken was a little dry but tasty. Minus one star because I think the tofu could have been better. The texture of the eggplant tofu was close to perfect but the inside flavor of the tofu was just nonexistent - I think if they marinaded the tofu or pre-seasoned it it would be much better. $10, super quick, and I'll say again - the service with a smile was great! read more

Not overly salty. Great flavor. Kept wanting more. - Mapo tofu: reminded me of a filipino dish growing up- cant think of it exactly, but honestly I didn't care for it. I like tofu, but the sauce not so much. - Sautéed bok choy; what can I say? Love my leafy greens. I try to get some every chance I get regardless of restaurant. - Salt & pepper pumpkin: this was a surprise! My fiancé said it had a similar texture to sweet potatoes/yams- but it wasn't that sweet which I enjoyed (because surprisingly I don't like sweet potatoes/yams) BUT it's not every day you get to try pumpkin & apparently it's what they are popular for. I like all these simple Bento options opening up in Pleasanton. While Xushi is more on the Japanese side, for Taiwanese there is now BentoLicious. Honestly shouldn't take you more than a minute to figure out what you want: there are 6 options, mostly chicken but check the daily chef's special. Picking the three sides will probably take more time as there are more and you might want to see which pairs best or just pick your favorites. I went on a Friday with the chef special being black pepper beef. Figured I had to get that. They give you a lot of meat! Good flavor, too! I know I got a few veggies, but honestly couldn't pack it away. Between the Railroad (fried pork chop) and the ribs in black bean sauce, I definitely want to come back. So happy to have found a dining stop on the way the South Bay to the East Bay! I'd never even stopped in San Ramon or Pleasanton before. It's located on a side of a strip mall, just a few blocks from the highway, so it's pretty easy to find. When we got there, all the close parking was taken so we had to park a little further off by an Indian restaurant. Upon walking over, a small line was already waiting outside, socially distanced. Inside on the wall was a cute printout of the couple that manage the restaurant. When came time to order, you only have to pick an entree and 3 sides. I tried the 3 cup chicken - a tad spicy but nicely seasoned; fried chicken - tasty, not too salty, though not the best fried chicken I've had; and the beef, which was mostly standard beef stir fry. And I'd rank them in about that order. However, the sides were actually the stars, in my opinion. Mapo tofu was smooth and nommy; asparagus was crisp and quickly gobbled up; salt and pepper pumpkin was perfectly seasoned and delish; eggplant was succulent and tasty. Came here for New Year's Eve lunch and the ordering process was super quick and easy! We were greeted as soon as we came in the door and hit with a bunch of recommendations from who I believe is the owner. Your bento comes with rice, a protein, and three sides. I think the sides are placed randomly because the box has different sizes and my friends and I all got the same sides in different places LOL. Their most popular protein is the fried chicken, which my friends got, but I got the basil chicken. For sides, I got bittermelon in black bean sauce (I've never seen bittermelon served like this before in a casual restaurant), fried pumpkin (their fan favorite side), and mapo tofu. I was hoping for the mapo tofu to be in the bigger side slot but it was fine! Basil chicken - Nice juicy chunks! I loved that it came with peppers. The chicken itself wasn't spicy but I ate the peppers for a little kick. It was delicious with rice. Fried chicken - The piece of chicken was HUGE! My friends couldn't finish it. It tastes how you'd expect popcorn chicken to taste. It takes around two minutes to try so you can have it fresh! Bittermelon in black bean sauce - Not super bitter but juuust right. I love bittermelon in general and the sauce complimented the vegetable really well; it wasn't overpowering in flavor. My friends hate bittermelon so I was surprised to see this as it is loved by a small crowd. Fried pumpkin - This was seasoned with salt and pepper and I usually just eat pumpkin in soups so having it fried tasted incredible! It has a light batter and the savory/sweet/creamy feeling works so well. I loved it. Mapo tofu - Pretty mild (in my opinion) and not crazy spicy nor salty. I liked the sauce! The service was amazing and I felt like this store is the owner's passion project. He and the other person working were so sweet. None of us could finish our meals as it's a lot of rice. Periodically I have cravings for Taiwanese bento. My go to place is BentoLucious, a home style Taiwanese bento box. My favorite order is the RailRoad Bento Box option number 4. It consists of pork chop and rice with three side dishes. There is a wide selection of side dishes to choose. I like the mapo tofu and eggplant. For my third side dish, I doubled up in the mapo tofu.
