While in NH we ventured out of Waterville valley for breakfast and decided to try this place. It was awesome. Portions were huge, prices were low and the service great. The place looked like a little cabin on a pond. A bit divey but I loved it. I had the special which was steak tips and that came with eggs, home fries and toast. Def go for the biscuit! It was delicious and homemade. Steak tips were yum too. Daughter had the apple French toast and loved it and my son had the strawberry shortcake. All were served in paper plates and we were given plasticware. Don't expect anything fancy but just good food and service. Oh and grab some maple syrup on your way out! read more

Ok so I get it: we are in New Hampshire & the real reason to be here is the scenery, not the cuisine, but still....this place was awful! Food served by a cranky waitress on paper plates. Watered down coffee served in paper cups. She messed up our order - which we decided not to even mention since she was so surly from the get and figured complaining would only make it worse. The weirdest thing is that this place supposedly makes their own maple syrup yet the syrup served is totally watered down, like almost clear. The food itself was meh at best. The place is off road. It was a little busy, we waited about 10mins until we were seated. The kids loved their silver dollar pancakes. We headed out to specifically to find this place for breakfast. We got here and it was busy, we were told there would be a wait, ok, we sat on the bench, 5 minutes later we were seated, not bad. We were quickly served coffee and within 10 minutes our order was taken. My wife had the pancakes, 3 buttermilk medium sized, came with real warm maple syrup, homefries, and sausage, wow, a lot of food and good. I got the sausage and cheese omlette, came with homefries and homemade toast. The omlette was huge, packed with fillings. We took the leftovers with us for a later snack. The service was excellent and accomodating, and they were busy. Very rustic, no frills, just bring you apetite, portions are huge and the food is good, we will be back. We needed some exercise after that breakfast, so we headed across the street to the driving range to hit a bucket of balls, but that's another review. :) read more

The moment you walk though the door you are greeted with quick and friendly service. The food is delicious and so hard to believe what a great find in such a rural location. The homemade breads, nicely seasoned homefries and big omelets make for a delicious filling breakfast. As for paper plates, well its a no brainer. This place has Well Water and a Septic system so the impact of washing dishes is too much for the volume of business. So yes there must be garbabe but think of how easy it is to recycle paper vs plastics here. I guess there are so many paper plated critics because people don't get it. So if you want delicious food, 5 miles deep in the middle of noplace, with great service in a country sugar shack settling you will find that here. I give them 5 stars! read more

As a midwesterner on vaca, this place was awesome. My 1st & only visit (so far) was back in July. Very rustic & genuine. I think they're a 4th gen, maple syrup family? Should have bought the 1/2 gal, but got the 2 qt instead. Breakfast was hearty. I screwed up and order a meal w/o pancakes. (der, dum) The picnic-ware, threw me off, but the food is good and the servings are huge. Really, really huge. I got a meal involving 2 scrambled eggs ( more like 4), 2 slabs of ham thick as your thumb and as big as your face. Hashbrowns and maple beans, which I tried, but not a fan of beans for breakfast. I love breakfast and this place makes some damn hearty no-frills food. A perfect start for a big day full of activity. I did not join the clean plate club on this diversion and I always pride myself on finishing, but had I suceeded, I would have needed a wheelchair, 1/2 gal of H2O and to lay prone for 2-3 hrs just to recover. Service was quick & adequate, but they don't dote on you. Get 'em in, serve & get 'em out seems to be the vibe. This is a small family business serving breakfast 2 days a week(i was told by a local), so i had no expectation of cloth napkins or carved melons. Eat here usually several times a year when I'm up in the White Mountains. My favorite breakfast place bar none. Not only is the breakfast selection fantastic (best corn beef hash around and) but it always come to you piping hot which is a huge plus. In addition, great decor. Located on a little back road, this hidden gem did not disappoint! Hours are 8AM-2PM on Sat so we waited about 15 min as we arrived early. And it seemed all the locals rolled in right at 8. Yah, so the food was served on paper plates and plastic utensils- who cares when the food was plentiful and wicked yummy!! I had the pumpkin pancakes with bacon crisped to perfection, and some homefries with onions. My boyfriend got the Big Country Breakfast and could not eat it all. The biscuits were huge and homemade! It was so good it inspired him to tip the big burly guys cooking in the kitchen. It took 15 min from ordering til the meal was brought to the table. If there was any downside it would be that the food wasnt hot when served, just very warm. $26 for two big breakfasts and coffee that will last us well past lunch. Id recommend to anyone! read more

First and foremost, I was off-put by the sign suggesting that persons suffering from food allergies should seek out alternative places to eat. The sign definitely did not make me feel welcome. The service was almost non-existent. We had to retrive our own bill. The woman at the cash register was rude and was incapable of doing basic math. She was also pretty insistent about tipping. Some advice to Bentons: Tipping is for service. Its not mandatory. Train your staff to earn the tips you seem to think they deserve for doing next to nothing. The food was basic breakfast fare. Nothing remarkable. The menu was limited (basically an assortment of eggs/omlets and pancakes) because (as we were told by the waitress) the kitchen staff is new. Im not a regular, but I am a local and I did notice the "small town-itis" going on. Two parties who arrived after my party were seated first. Additionally, they sell packets of dirt for 1.25, tacky way to make a buck I think. Theres plenty of dirt in NH, grab some for free in the parking lot on your way to the Overflow Diner in Plymouth. Our family has a house in Waterville Valley, so we were really excited to find out about the Sugar Shack. The atmosphere is very NH and the menu reads like a dream. After a short wait, we were sat in the back, where the tables are very crowded, but typical for a great, busy breakfast place. Waitress was not so friendly and not into entertaining questions or friendly chatter.... We all got different pancakes, which all stated they came with "fresh whip cream". Being we were in NH in farm country, we assumed it would be freshly whipped cream, yum. But after requesting fresh whip cream that was forgotten, they literally brought out a can of Reddi Whip and squirted it on the plate. That is not Fresh Whip Cream, why not just say whipped cream....or better yet just make fresh whipped cream! Might go back, but won't be as excited as we wanted to be... read more

This place is like home. It's a small breakfast place with large portions and it's always delicious. Don't be alarmed by the plastic silverware, paper plates, etc. It can get crowded around the holidays so it's best to get there early. I always forget what their exact schedule is, but they're often only open on weekends. A lot of locals go here, and some skiing families seem to go here often, too. My advice: on a day that you're too tired and/or sore to head up to WV, stop in for Benton's instead and get some pancakes, bacon, and homefries all covered in maple syrup. read more

Finally made it here after seeing the Sugar Shack guy selling syrup at 49/175 for years. We were surprised at having to wait for a table, but it was less than 10 minutes before we were seated. The menu was also more extensive than I had anticipated, I figured it would pretty much just be pancakes, eggs, and sausage. The portions were very large and I have to say that the food was wonderful. I figured that I had to try pancakes on my first visit, and they were way better than anything homemade I've ever had. Lots of little Maine blueberries and just plain extremely tasty. The sausage was not stereotypical tough little "breakfast links", but real meat that tasted great. The home fries were nothing fancy, but they were a good complement to the meal. I finished my 3 pancake plate, but will order a short stack next time and feel that should be plenty. I'm sticking with 4 stars because the service was friendly but not very attentive (probably had too many tables to watch) and the host sort of gave the impression that he didn't like us being there. I don't care, I'm coming back for more of that great chow...to me, this place is just plain authentic American. read more
