Had my haircut here by MIKE ...and he totally jacked up my hair. It looked okay when I was in the chair... but when I went home and washed it, I noticed it was uneven in so many places ( and I'm not talking in a good way either) this guy talked up a good game too .. he's got signs everywhere in the shop that swear by his 5 star yelp reviews... so naturally I thought I was in good hands. Boy was I wrong. If ya ask me... this guy is a joke. He has his own private area in back of the shop.. so I assume he's seoerate from berekely?? Which is weird... mini barbershop inside another barbershop??? I felt crowded in the TINY ass space. Felt like I was getting my haircut in some dirty cluttered garage. His set up was unorganized and just all around looks stupid. I ended up having to go back in t o have someone else in the shop fix what this hammerfisted so called " barber" Mike did to my poor hair. I don't quite remember the girls name that fixed it but she did a GREAT job at correcting the problems. She was the girl up in front.. dark hair and she had alot of tattoos...probably should have gone to her or someone else from the beginning. I had an important job interview 2 days from when I got it cut so I had to do something. It was either that or just shave my head. And I didn't wanna look like a neo nazi for my first job interview with this company. Point to this story DONT go t o MIKE unless u dig crappy haircuts. I am giving the shop 1 star right now because initially I was not satisfied and my hair looked ridiculous.... I will go back and see the girl who fixed my hair or someone else from berkeley.... and if I'm happy with the result I will update this review to reflect my expierience at that time... but for now... sorry.... 1 star for having MIKE botch my hair. read more

I almost never review, especially poorly, because I'm not a fan of the social media bashing that goes on these days -- however -- this was absolutely the worst hair cut I've ever received, and among the worst customer service I've experienced as well. I'll try to keep this succinct. The Service: When I walked in I was greeted by a lady who acted like she was put out that I wanted a haircut. I had called ahead of time, they assured me it was pretty slow, so I figured I'd go in after reading all the good reviews. I was greeted with extreme indifference and thrown to a barber, after in plain sight I could see them haggling about which one sitting in the back didn't want to get up and do a cut. The Cut: When you book a standard cut, regardless of what kind of shop you go to, you're buying 30 minutes of their time, at a minimum. I couldn't have been in the chair for more than 8 minutes tops, and if she could have rushed me out sooner she would have. She paid zero attention to how my hair had been cut in the past, and instead just hacked at it and botched the job nearly instantly. The blade they used to shave the back of my neck at the end was pretty dull and she quickly gave me razor burn. Hair grows back, so obviously this isn't the end of the world -- but if your business is cutting hair, and you put as little skill and effort in to it as possible, it seems like a bad spot to be getting your hair cut. read more

I was going to write a review three weeks ago when I got my haircut, but I was too busy and apathetic to compose a negative review. Yesterday, I read a negative Yelp review concerning Brenda; hence, it inspired me to write my review. First, Beware! This shop does not list their prices. I made an appointment with Brenda at 10:00 AM, but when I arrived she had just started cutting a client's hair. Therefore, I had to wait until she finished, 20 minutes later. What is the advantage in making an appointment when it's not respected. Brenda falsely apologized, but never explained why she took another client before a client who made an appointment. I asked for a trim, an inch all around, but she neglected to cut the top, until I reminded her, and she did not bother to trim my sideburns; it was a rush job. She also used thinning shears; a good barber doesn't need thinning shears. It was a very disappointing haircut and experience. I'll never go back again. Regarding their prices;; it's arbitrary, so I suggest you ask before you get a haircut. read more

I've been going to Berkeley Barbers since the original shop was up on Wilshire Blvd. Good barbers come and go, but I've been a regular of Valerie's since she arrived. I actually look forward to each haircut for she is great, fast, funny, and just nice to be with. Once in a while I even get a bit of singing, and the conversation is always good. Not go mention what a great looking lady she is. I can't figure out the couple of negative reviews, but I know that some people cannot be pleased no matter what you do for them, in any area of life. And being fast is fine when you are good. Perhaps Warren is the guy who's girlfriend did not like the haircut Val gave him, so she had a crazy fit in the shop. I don't know if that was it or she just did not like seeing her beau in the hands of a great looking lady barber. Maybe now I will find out. But if you need a great cut from a great lady, give Valerie a call. Don't wait! read more

My friend was in desperate need to get his hair cut while we were on his lunch break. We stumbled upon Berkeley Barbers on Santa Monica after having some lunch down the street. We figured, "why not check it out?!" since no where we called could accommodate on a Wednesday at noon! When we got there, the other male barber was finishing up with a client and Val quickly approached us. She asked us what we were looking for. My friend Paul told her what he wanted and she executed his fade and trim quickly! We were actually in and out in 30 minutes. He got his perfect high fade on the sides and back and trim on the top. I could tell he was "feeling his oats", excited with his cut, and ready for his date that night! Thanks Val for being so accommodating and for his perfect quick cut! One of a chain of Angelo's Barbershops, also called Berkeley. This place has been around forever, and it's as professional as you get. Excellent haircuts and service, led by manager Tom, who greets you at the front of the shop. Tom is SO professional and caring - even gives a gift to a new customer thanking THEM for their patronage! His new gift is a high-intensity rechargeable flashlight along with an AMAZING note of APPRECIATION. WHO does that in 2020?? And his haircut is perfection. He LISTENS to his clients. I attached a pic while he was cutting my hair - look at that concentration! lol Another amazing thing about Berkeley Barbers is the collection of vintage historical barbershop artifacts that greet you when you walk in, and throughout the large shop. I have been going here for 20yrs.+. This is one of the oldest barbershops in SM. Although some of the barbers have come and gone they always have excellent talent. You can make an appointment or come in and get a haircut from someone without too long of a wait as there are usually several barbers on staff. They offer other services nails, shoe shine and not sure but other services for women. I get my haircut by Val and Roger and am very happy with them. I have hard to cut hair and they always make it look good. Larry does a great shine on the shoes. You can have it done while you wait or leave off a few pairs. Everyone is very friendly there and there is street metered parking and some parking in back. I highly recommend this barbershop read more

This is my barbershop since I was in college. Love when you walk in, the old barber chairs and memorabilia, like others have said. Everyone is nice, though the staff has changed a lot over the years. Tom is my guy. Always feel like I'm in good hands- a really good guy, nice energy, great haircut- and he loves dogs! Can't recommend him enough. Funny when I think of it - my hair has changed a lot since college - (losing it, too-haha!) - gone from short to long, etc. He gets it all. When I first moved to the area, I was a little anxious trying to find a good barber that would do a consistently good job and paid close attention to detail. I have a business and looking professional and presentable is important. I found Valerie on yelp and have am grateful for the great recommendation. She is amazing and I enjoy seeing her every time I visit. Not only does she listen to the details in how I wish my hair to be cut, she has a great personality and is very pleasant. Leslie is the BEST! Ive been coming to her for 5 years and i wont let anyone touch my hair. Shes amazing. Im super picky about how i like my hair cut and she knows just what i like and she handles all my hair needs with such finesse! Shes extremely knowledgeable about products, the right style for me and she always makes me feel super comfortable. Great conversation, fantastic haircut, and at $21 bucks, its a steal! I got a great haircut from Leslie and would strongly recommend her to others. This was my first time at Berkeley Barbers, and Leslie took the time to understand what I wanted. The experience was also fun - instead of toiling in silence as some barbers do, Leslie engaged me the entire time with conversation and it was clear that this was one of the things she enjoyed about her job. VAL = FIERCE for a fast on-point cut for my friend who came in on the fly and with little time to waste. His high fade and top trim was FAB! I was amazed at the time it took for her to get it done and how perfect it was. I could tell my friend was more than happy with his hair! I have been getting a cut from Mike at Berkeley Barbers for about a year now. I'm busy and travel a lot, so sometimes let the hair grow longer than usual just so I can get it done by him when in town. I appreciate anyone who loves what they do, and this guy's enthusiasm for his art is rare these days. Very 'Ol Skool' right down to his Japanese scissors kept in samurai edge. Leslie is my favorite. Shes excellent at her craft, and shes very personable. Her schedule is pretty flexible and is always able to squeeze me in whenever i need her polish up this mane of mine. Come to berkeley barbers, ask for Leslie. Plus she gives great scalp massages when she shampoos your hair. This is a cash only place , but there is an atm machine right inside the shop! Call LESLIE. I am a little picky about getting my haircut done right and that is exactly what Leslie's approach is as well. She constantly asked for my input and made sure that she is getting it right and did not rush through the haircut. She does the shampoo and the shave on the back of the neck along with a shoulder massage at the end of the haircut. Definitely the best hairstylist I have had in a long time. read more

I have been going to see Tom for a number of years now. In addition to giving an expert cut, he is always very flexible about fitting me in, even when I call at the last minute. His cuts are the full package, beard trip, eyebrow trim, etc. He always has new magazines as well. I love that I have a classic barber shop within walking distance of my house, and I will keep coming back as long as Tom is there. read more

Going here today was the best thing I have done in some time. Miguel was amazing. I live in Orange County and came here to bring my husband for chemo and while waiting I took a chance of going to this barber shop.
