I wish I could give this place at least four stars given the great selection of produce, fish and meats and other goods. Unfortunately many the employees' attitudes prevent that. Many of them seem to have a chip on their shoulder and could care less about the customers. This has always been the case, well before Covid. Am I missing something? Berkeley bowl is so Overrated (with a capital O). I came here bc I haven't had much of an appetite lately and I thought the famed produce would be an enticing treat. Instead I was met with a warehouse full of dusty rotting produce. The squash I looked at were so unripe and dirty I have seen way better at Safeway. By far the most disappointing part was the basket of persimmons that I'd been craving all week. The persimmons were brown and mushy and rotting; I didn't even want to touch them. On top of all that Berkeley bowl prices run a lot higher than your average grocery store. I just have to ask, what's the appeal of weaving your way through a jam packed aisle of poor quality produce? read more

I tend to visit Berkeley Bowl primarily for their inexpensive and fresh produce. Don't get me wrong, some produce is expensive. But it's usually something extremely foreign, like Buddha fingers, or some crazy blue mushroom. But the staples are generally affordable. The dairy sections are pretty evenly priced as well. To emphasize, it is expensive, but it's also high quality. Brands like Straus, and Clover. Their nuts, pasta, spice, and snack section aren't bad but can get a little up there. That said, the quality is generally high, thus the price is appropriate. But it is not adequate for a baller on a budget. Cheese is way, Way up there. Like way marked up ( I'll stick with Cheese Board where the cheese is always freshly cut from the wheel, has a much richer quality, and is literally half the cost). I generally don't even bother looking at it here. They have an excellent selection of the baked Acme bread. The price isn't bad... But Tjs offers a similar variety and the cost is about a third less. I would avoid their interior as much as possible. I think they attract patrons by their produce, and while you happen to be there maybe you will grab some kitchen interior stuff. Although the selection is great, the prices are rrrrridiculoooous. Like $2 for a can of beans, or tuna, or whatever. They have nice Kosher, Indian, and Asian foods-- which can be hard to find elsewhere. But as far as shelf stable staples. Nnnnope. Trader Joe's sort of takes the crown there, where prices are generally about half the cost. One thing other grocery stores can not contend with at Berkeley Bowl, however, it is their produce. So much poetry about the Bowl has been written here and elsewhere - Is there need for more? YES! This place reminds me of the movie "Field of Dreams" when Shoeless Joe Jackson asks, "Is this heaven?" and Ray replies, "No...It's Iowa." It's the Berkeley Bowl. Sure, there's plenty of surly service here as elsewhere in the Bay Area, but with patience, you'll find your go-to team and super Bowl family: Jackie, Mo, Jessica, and Minh in Meat & Seafood, and Carlos and Donjulio in Produce. They're incredibly knowledgeable, affable, and they go to great lengths to provide exactly what I need. The garlic and ginger always remind me of my check-ins with Donjulio, who moved back to his hometown of Seattle. He and I also often talked tomatoes - "Tomatoes have to suffer to be delicious." I love Berkeley Bowl and although I live out of the area, I try to make a trip out here about once a month. However, on my visit here on May 29 during the SIP, as a senior citizen considered high risk, I did not feel safe. They let way too many people into the store. One of my favorite places. Ever. Don't be scared of the parking lot or the lines - it's not that bad. Parking at the new Berkeley Bowl is plentiful, and the spots aren't too tight. The best things about Berkeley Bowl are the produce, fish and Asian sections....and the prices. Berkeley Bowl is well-known for its produce, but you don't get a sense for the variety until you are actually there - pretty much any random vegetable that a recipe calls for will be at Berkeley Bowl. In addition to its conventional produce, they have a sizable organic produce section. People have complained about the separate organic section but with different colored produce bags, it's much easier as you don't have to weigh separately in the organic produce section. Their cut fruits (pineapple, melon) are pretty decently-priced - comparable to the prices at Trader Joe's but much tastier. They have a great selection of fish. On any given day, 8-10 varieties of beautiful, fresh fish. Two of my favorites that I've gotten there are butter fish and black cod. This is no Ranch 99, but they have 3-4 aisles of Asian food - sauces, lots of different types of tofus, noodles, etc. You won't find every Asian ingredient you're looking for, but you'll find a lot of them. And the price is right - I don't know any other grocery store out there that can consistently beat Berkeley Bowl on prices. Even during peak times (Sunday afternoons), the lines move pretty briskly. Omigosh, this place rocks. Berkeley Bowl has the biggest produce section ever for an independently owned grocery store and everything looks... wonderful. I was just mesmerized the moment I set my eyes on this place! I had the same reaction as Michelle S. below! (I had to snap a few photos just to document my visit!) They have quite a selection when it comes to cheese, meat and produce. I was particularly impressed that they had cactus. Or rather, cacti. Diced and bagged. Next to the whole ones. Yeah. Seriously. Their cafe (both cold deli stuff and their Asian cafe) looked again, amazing. If I hadn't just had lunch, I think I could have done some serious damage! I love the modern look of the building, as well as the whole independent and organic-ness of the place. It's a welcome addition for sure. I'm gonna say it. Reasonable wine selection (no spirits though---get your bourbon elsewhere), huge beer selection. Awesome roasted chickens, a ridiculously large selection of fresh breads. Salad bar! Hot soup! Cheeses galore! Sandwiches, burritos, steam-table fare! And now with better parking than the original Berkeley Bowl and a better cafe. Just a minute off the highway as well. Why shop anywhere else? Just when you thought it couldn't get any better. The new Berkeley bowl west is a great alternative for those that don't live dead smack in the middle of Berkeley. It's also great for those who might commute and need somewhere close to the freeway entrance/exit. Might I add that parking is still bad, but better than the other Berkeley bowl location. The aisles like most people have noted are more accommodating. I don't feel the need to have to run over someone to be able to walk down an aisle anymore. On that note, I can actually walk down an aisle with a cart rather than lugging a basket around... unlike at the other Berkeley bowl. I don't know how anyone would think Berkeley bowl is expensive. Can you please tell me a place that is much cheaper? A wide variety of produce, meats, cheese, etc... The organic and non organic sections are now separated. Also, no need to buy a whole bag of flour or bottle of spice if you just need it for one occasion. They carry almost everything loosely and can be bought by weight. This, the newest Berkeley Bowl, is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! They have a wonderful bulk food section as well as a thriving deli. The produce is separated into organic and non-organic sections, so you don't have to double check each and every thing before you buy. I LOVE THAT!!!! Thank you, BB West. Everything I can get at Whole Foods I can buy here, but often for a more reasonable price. The place gets busy on weekends, so I would shop on weekdays instead. Looking for Vegimite? Check! Curry Leaves? Check! Lyle's Golden Syrup? Check! For a cook like me, this place is heaven. I often find myself looking for an exotic ingredient for a recipe and guess where I'll find it 99% of the time? Berkeley Bowl. Sometimes, even Market Hall or Whole Foods will fall short and you'll have just have to brave the long lines and crowded aisles of Berkeley Bowl. There was one time when they did not have what I was looking for and that was kaffir lime leaves. Ranch 99 and Whole Food did not have it either. I ended up buying the plant itself and planting it in our garden, so I can use it for my Thai cooking. Berkeley Bowl West has a fairly large organic produce section and an even larger regular produce section. I once counted at least 8 different kinds of eggplant in the regular produce section. Amazing. This place is a real foodie paradise, especially for people like me who like to cook and experiment with different recipes. The meat section is great too! There are organic and grass fed choices for beef, heritage pork, and wild seafood and shellfish selections. Organic chicken is also available. They will do custom cuts of meat too. If you need your pork ribs cut in half crosswise, they will do that for you. If you want a whole chicken cut up in 10 pieces, they will do that for you too. I can do that myself but why do something that someone else can do for you? The cheese section stocks a variety of domestic and imported cheeses, and the dairy section will impress you with its variety of yogurts, cottage cheese, European style butters, and organic milk. Berkeley Bowl actually has a good selection of Asian products as well. I was looking for coconut milk powder for a coconut layer cake I was making, and I found it here. Beer section is nice. Lots of craft beers to select from and if beer is not for you, they have a good wine selection as well. They have both domestic and imported wine from all over the world. If cooking is not your thing, BB also has prepared food. Chinese, Mexican and the deli case will have something yummy for you and your family. Their pastry case is pretty big, so I'm sure you won't have any problems satisfying your sweet tooth. They have a separate cafe and we've eaten there in the past for breakfast and lunch. They have a huge variety of produce, slightly more than you'll find at Whole Foods and more than at Rainbow but probably not the cheapest I've seen if you're comparing against farmers markets or Asian markets. It's probably the best one stop shop if you're looking for overall for cheese, organic items, produce, and specialty items. If I were to nitpick, I noticed their selection of nut milks were more limited than Rainbow. It's also more cramped than what you might find in south bay but more spacious compared to San Francisco. I liked that they had an underground parking lot and small outdoor parking lot. But I probably will stick to a mix of Rainbow grocer, farmers markets, and Asian markets. read more

I love this location ! The line to enter moves fast and efficiently. It is always stocked although sometimes the produce section can be a bit over picked especially around late afternoon weekends but that isn't a huge deal breaker. So much non dairy to choose from as well ! This place is Heaven if you are changing up your diet and want to try new healthy foods! I love shopping here and I love the beauty section . There is no more makeup just some lipsticks but they do have a wide variety of lotions and essential oils . I got an amazing lavender massage oil for less than I would at my spa in Palo Alto. I heart Berkeley Bowl! If only it was closer to home. There's everything here! I spent a good amount of time at the bakery - picking out a box of goodies for my family. Let me try to remember all of it... the fruit tart was scrumptious - with a good amount of tart and sweet, and a crust that was crumbly enough not to fall apart when I dug into it. The lemon tart was amazing - it was not overly sweet which I really liked. I also tried the tiramisu - powdered cocoa on top, creamy, and chocolatey enough for my craving. I'm pretty sure I left something out. I could have been borderline diabetic that day, but it's all good because I was having amazing sweets from Berkeley Bowl. :) As for their other goodies, I was able to find a good amount of fresh fruits and prepackaged products throughout the store. It seems like they package everything on their own from nuts/candy/rice to cleaning supplies. This is officially my local market. Pretty awesome in some areas...terrible with customer service. There are so many different types of everything! Over 10 different carrots, apples, mushrooms...fruits and veggies that you normally wouldn't find unless at a specialty market. Insane produce...love it. The meat and fish sections were also full of great varieties. Sushi grade fish really caught my eye. And then the customer service...I saw a lady get yelled at by the fish guy. She apparently wanted a specific item from the case and the guy yelled, "They're all the same!!!!!!!!!!" Wow. I was waiting to buy some fish but I ended up walking away. Whoa. The cashiers that I've seen look like they hate their jobs. Never a smile. No small talk. Just...let me scan your stuff and get the heck out of here looks on their faces. Haha. It's almost comical. They have a cool cafe across from the market. There is also a deli, Chinese food, Mexican, and sushi. Lots of variety if you want to grab some lunch or a quick meal. Parking is everywhere ranging from multiple lots and street spots. They do a great job with their check stands as I never waited longer than 5 minutes. I'm done hearing about how the produce at Berkeley Bowl is amazing beyond belief, that it's a life-changing experience to dreamily float down endless rows and rows of glistening, luscious oddities. Meh, meh, and meh. Sure, I've gotten some alright produce from BB over the years (and by alright I mean of the standard, that'll do variety), and, sure, they a wide selection, but every time I shop there, I bring home something that ends up truly disappointing. There are always produce items that are less than fresh, or that look unbelievably perfect in store but go rotten in weird ways a few days later. This past trip, I bought two huge, vibrantly lip-smacking red mangoes. I was saving them to ripen and make mangoes and sticky rice, but then noticed last night that the pointy ends had started to turn into ugly spotted mush. Panicking, I decided to cut them up this morning to save the good parts, even though the good parts still seemed unripe. Turns out there were no good parts. (See photo.) If I was my ornery grandma I would take them back and demand a refund, but, seriously, who has the time? The things I like about BB West: -still seems a little less crowded than the original -in keeping with BB tradition, they have a good blend of organic/specialty and regular run-of-the-mill items -diverse bulk bins! -location ...basically, everything but the produce. The Berkley Bowl is a bittersweet experience. Here's a place where you can find 50 types of mushrooms, 10 kinds of bacon, 30 kinds of butter, most amazing fruits/vegetables, and many more items that you've never seen before BUT at a price. That's the only bitter part of the experience. Everything here is marked 10% - 25% over any "regular" market out there. I've seen a few things that went up to almost 30%. That's he main reason why I can't recommend buying here UNLESS you need something specific that hey have. Get the item and the rest where you normally shop. read more

Yes they are local and have great produce. But they have a horrible return policy. Over the years I've bought things what didn't work out. This time it was Kite Hill almond yogurt that was moldy. They don't take refrigerated items back for exchange or return. Look at the date: they will sell things that are past the date! If you buy something that is rotten you sh*t outta luck. My recommendation: don't take any chances, buy what you are sure you can keep because their return policy is narrow and rigid. MANAGEMENT: BB's return policy hurts more than it helps. Your average sale would go up if people felt that you stood behind your products. Clearly this is true as most big businesses do it and thrive. I go to you because you are the only big locally owned option besides farmer's markets. Sorry to give one star, I don't like to give it: if you start offering significantly better return/exchange I will edit this review and give you more stars. Other things: Workers not unionized. My SIL told me about this place so I was looking forward to perusing the aisle in search of yummy items for a picnic or at the least grub for the trip home tomorrow. As with movies, the sequel is rarely as great as the original and Berkeley Bowl West is no exception. Shiner coat of paint, less car and foot traffic and a big new building do not replace personality. The folks at BB West are not as friendly, the selection is not as vast and overall I prefer the OG. If you have never been to the OG and find yourself here, it's likely gonna be a great experience. But, if you are like me and enjoy the friendly butchers and produce staffers, then this place is not for you. read more

Every time I come into Berkeley Bowl, there are so many options of apples and oranges it is frankly dizzying and intoxicating. I brag to all my nonBerkeley friends of Berkeley Bowl's existence and every time I bring a visitor there then they get super happy too. One gripe I have about this location is that the exotic fruit section is not as extensive as the original Berkeley Bowl's. The place is super nice though; very modern and there's an adjoining cafe. Love, love, LOVE the bulk section; it's literally like Whole foods but more selection of nuts and dried fruits + other snacks (which is dangerous!) and cheaper too! Some of my favorite things to get are the garlic sesame sticks, the butter toffee almonds, the sweet and salty bar mix, and the peanut butter chips. They also have spices like matcha tea, curry powder, and cardamom. I would stay away from their meat, seafood, and hot food sections which are very pricey (similar in that aspect to whole foods). This place is great! I took a stroll over from my office (only 1/2 mile away), looking for lunch. Walking in, the place reminded me of Costco. It was huge, with wide aisles and plenty to see. I really enjoyed the produce section, which had way more fruit than my local Whole Foods and Safeway. They also had a nice Asian foods section, where I got my LS soy sauce cheaper than priced at Ranch 99. Score! The food counters were busy so I stopped there to get my lunch. Deli, Sushi, Chinese, Mexican, Bakery. I opted for the Chinese food plate and it was bleh. Nothing special. I saw their Cafe (across the sidewalk from the actual store) only when I was leaving and wished that I had visited there first to pick out my lunch. Duck into the main store and head straight down the right side for: pastries and espresso drinks, Chinese food, burritos, deli sandwiches, and fresh made sushi rolls or bowls. I'm especially fond of the spicy tuna bowl. PS: having grown up going to BB all my life, I have to give them 5 stars, even though the shoppers are sometimes crazy (by Berkeley standards) and nobody knows how to navigate their parking lot. Customer service woman was very rude and disrespectful. Even after complaining to the supervisor, there was such unkind treatment as if I was some kind of a second class citizen and I think because I looked foreign to her. Very sad that she was not trying to see how she could have been helpful. For God's sake, you are there to be kind and courteous. Customer service person is like the ambassador to the store. I bet when she was applying to the position, she had said how much she loved helping people. I suggest that the store also employ people who go there as disguised customers. Now this may not seem like a sexy choice (LOL) for a 500th Review but Berkeley Bowl is simply one of the best grocery stores on the planet. I mean they have everything and when I say everything.......I mean EVERYTHING. If your VEGAN......they got you covered If your VEGETARIAN......covered If your a carnivore......covered If you love seafood.......covered Produce......covered Fruits and Veggies.....covered Pastries.....covered Dishes for breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.......covered Juice, Milk and other dairy products......covered Organic items of ALL KIND......covered Salad Bar.....Vegan Bar......Veggie Bar......covered Slightly Expired but still good produce......fruits and veggies......covered Snacks......covered Wine......beer.....other spirits......covered Plenty of Parking......covered Great Customer Service.....covered Everything "in between".....you know what I am going to say so say it with me "COVERED" So if your ever in the Bay Area and you don't need to be near Berkeley to visit this establishment......don't leave without coming here or you just may regret it. Be advised things here can be a bit pricey.....but remember where you are and what kind of quality items your buying and price won't bother you that much.
