We ended up getting three things: * The cheese twist was soooo good! The cheese was flavorful and the pastry itself was perfectly done. * The apple pastry was interesting. Unlike many places where the pastry is either bland or overly sweet, Acme's pastry had a slight saltiness to it, which I actually think is genius. I almost always prefer a hint of savory flavor to balance out the sweetness from the filling or topping. My only issue with this one was that the apple topping was not sweet at all and leaned more tart, so paired with the salty pastry, it was not quite the flavor combination I was hoping for. * The mini raspberry pastry had the same issue for me. The raspberry topping was just a bit too tart and sour for my taste. You can never go wrong with ACME. Been coming here for years, and somehow after so many years the poppy olive oil pound cake never goes wrong. Such a nice citrusy delight. I discovered Le Hella Wet Seeded Levain--that's Ms. HWSL if ya nasty--and I'm not going to lie, I didn't even see the bread at first. I just liked the name. That bread, like pretty much everything that Acme Bread Company sells, was absolutely delicious. Soft where it needed to be, crunchy where it needed to be, seeded where it needed to be... I wish I had bought two. Be prepared to wait during their busy hours (weekends, days that end in "y", etc.), but know that your wait is worth it. Only two people can fit inside so there will always be a line out the door but they move really fast and the wait is maybe 5-10 minutes. Parking is limited in the front but there is more parking behind the bakery. Bread is fresh and amazing. I haven't had anything that I didn't like. Inside is small but everyone was helpful and happy. But my heart will always be with that first piece of the Pain Epi - tearing it off, tasting the crisp and chewy exterior and the soft fluffy inside just fills my soul with joy. It's been years since I've been here, owing to opening hours, but the baked goods are as good as ever. We went for pizza this time and a sorta cross bun, which is a sorta-crossed bun with small raisins and candied lemon peel. It's a nice thing which I imagine would go well with coffee, but the flavor profile, much akin to that of pannetonne, is wintery in summer. The pizza is not pizza. It's essentially toppings on foccacia, which is a good bake. The highlight is the bread, not the toppings, which are nevertheless fun. Today the two flavors on offer were corn (corn, red onion, cotija, zucchini, and squash, despite the zucchini occupying greater positions of prominence) and mushroom (mini shiitake, sweet onion, kalamata olive). The mushrooms are of similar sizes to the olives, impossibly cute, and is contrasted by large slices of onion. I prefer, though, the corn pizza; I'm certain that the corn isn't frozen but fresh, and the corn-cotija combination offers greater textural contrast and little bursts of sugar. read more

My boyfriend took me here for my birthday, and we ordered a couple pastries including - a peach puff pastry, a jalapeño cheese turnover, and croissant with goat cheese and Kalamata olive. All of the things were exquisitely delicious. We had to stand in line for maybe 5-10 minutes and it was bit chilly out, but when I tell you it is worth the wait... it is totally worth the wait. This was my 2nd time at Acme, and I must say that it will definitely not be my last. I happened to be available one day for the pickup window for their Too Good to Go surprise bag, so I ordered it on the app. I was given a massive quantity of bread, some smaller rolls, one unsliced loaf, and a long baguette. It was a really good deal for that quantity of bread for the price, and the baguette was so long it stuck out of the bag. This is a solid place to get plain bread. I got a loaf of their sourdough from a farmers market and it was delicious. The crust was perfect with a fluffy center and it made great grilled cheese and toast. It lasted about 4 days in my house, but any longer and it would have turned into croutons. If you want to catch them at the farmer's market, get there early because they do sell out of items. America, I love you, I chose to live here and make it my home for the last twenty years, but you are rubbish at bread. My interest was piqued when I saw this place listed as #2 best baguette on the West Coast on a Yelp article especially as it is just a couple of miles away from my house. I've had Acme bread before and found it to be good but not great, but that was always in a supermarket situation and maybe the bread wasn't super fresh but buoyed with enthusiasm after reading the reviews I made an afternoon trip to check out their items from the source. The place is lovely, I thought it was a good sign that they sell organic bread flour and whilst their produce is not fully organic, they do use this flour in their products. I bought a Pain d'Epi, a Pain de Mie and a cinnamon twist. The Pain d'Epi was the only baguette adjacent option, it uses the same dough fashioned to look like an ear of wheat as I didn't want sourdough. I will say this in Paris it would have been a solid 6/10 which may sound like a bit of shade or damnation with faint praise, and it kinda is, but contextually for American bread it was a solid 9. The Pain de Mie was even better, I am excited to have it accompany my sausage sandwich for breakfast tomorrow. The cinnamon twist was disappointing, it was a bit dry and didn't have a particularly good lamination. Oh, I also picked up a cookie as part of their fund raiser for a local charity, my husband said it was good. So yes, the fact that a bakery in this fine nation can get four stars is quite an achievement. I will be back here on a weekday morning when the lines aren't so out of hand and the baguettes are freshly baked. Maybe that'll push them into five-star territory? read more

We're regular weekly buyers of old world breads for a quick and healthy breakfast. We usually get Acme at Whole Foods, usually the Cranberry Walnut (good value as the loaf is bigger, and nice to have whole grain) or the Pain au Levain (one of their most popular products with decent flavor just enjoying it on its own). Olive bread is also delicious and one of the few on the market using green olives. Prices have gone up over time but the quality and taste is still top notch. The neighbors next door gifted me my first loaves. Olive and cranberry and walnut. Its sort of like the marketing tactics that drug dealers use. One bite and you will be hooked for life. Its simply the best bread on this side of the bay. The combination of varieties and flavors along with bake quality makes it outstanding. I like to cut open the bread and examine the air bubbles. I like even spacing and uniformity - this stacks up to Tartine. Flavor and crust is there too. On this latest visit I got the squash pizza, Edible Schoolyard, Challah and the BAR Marble cookie which I believe if you consume ends racism dead in its tracks. The squash pizza was a little cold but was still good. I liked best all the different seasoning flavors on it. Usually I'm used to some of the best pizza in the city like Flour and Water and as a pizza snob I can assure there are better pizza options around. Edible Schoolyard was very special. I got the last loaf and when something sells out that says something. Crunchy flavorful crust. Tasted delicious yet you know its for the health conscious. Its something you need to try. Challah was very pretty all braided and could be had with sesame seeds of poppy seeds. I think little kids would love this bread. Easy to eat and crust not so crunchy. Seniors with dentures might opt for this type as well. BAR Marble cookie was donation to end racism. Wow, how can you go wrong eating a cookie that ends racism!? It was black and white marble and had some chocolate and topped with some coarse salt that is a trick of the trade. Olive loaf and Cranberry Walnut are still probably my favorites. I get them all the time at Whole Foods. There are more choices at this store than your local grocery store but the convenience of picking it up at WF is a dollar or two? more expensive. There was a substantial line when I went. The older ladies that were complimenting each other's outfit were worried the pizza would sell out. One older lady was boasting that her shoes were good for a classy night out all the way to walking and dirty garden work. Make some new friends while in line... why not? Construction workers on their lunch breaks, senior citizens who demand a good deal, and suits alike were all here. Mass appeal to all. For budget minded individuals there was also a list of day old bread. I didn't get any but I assume its a great price... and if you gently toast day old bread it is still very very good. Acme Bread is one of my favorite bakeries in the bay! If you're a Berkeley student or live nearby, Acme is definitely worth the trek. The store front is very small. There is room for one person inside at a time, so most of the line is outside. There is almost always a line when I come here, but it moves pretty quickly. There is a small parking lot and street parking nearby. They have so many amazing bread loaves and pastries. As a cheese lover, my favorites are the cheddar biscuits and the cheese twists. No matter what I'm there for, I'll usually add one of those to my order to eat in the car because I know I can't wait until I'm home. Don't let the line scare you! If you drive on San Pablo in the morning, you'll always see a line of people snaking around the corner in front of Acme Bread. It looks like something from a Soviet-era photo of food lines. Determined to see why people were lining up in the absence of rationing, I tried Acme out. And yeah, it's definitely worth it. French baguette with crisp outside and chewy yet soft innards. Baked sourdoughs that make perfect sandwiches. Yum. Now you can get Acme bread at nearly any Whole Foods in the area so why line up? Well, you're getting it one or two days fresher and when you're talking about fresh baked natural bread without a whole lot of chemical stabilizers in it, it's worth getting fresh out of the oven. And unlike Moscow in the 1970s, you don't have to battle cold winters to get your bread. The line does move fairly quickly. There's parking behind Acme if the front lot is full. read more

It's hard to get such a variety of good bread, rolls and even a bit of pastry around town. And when I say town I mean San Francisco. They have a branch in pier 1 but we always took the extra way towards Berkely - the bread selection here is even better. Also acme is one of the few that offers different kind of whole wheat breads and even rolls. For me - I always feel like a kid in a candy store. It is always a treat to have Acme bread. I don't eat much bread, so I never picked up bread at the bakery until I saw it on the "Too Good To Go" app. The pickup time was reasonable. My surprise bag had several different types of bread. The only disadvantage was that I wasn't sure which bread I had in my bag in case I wanted to go back and just buy that bread. The lines are long and they do not cut the bread for you. I definitely lack bread-slicing skills, never the less, I was able to cut my loaves into some semblance of a slice of bread. Today's the FOURTH TIME I've asked for a rustic sourdough baguette, only to discover, yet again, that I got the fluffy sweet baguette when I got home. I'm eating and disliking it rather than driving across town to exchange it. I was the only person in the shop (rare), so being distracted is no excuse. I dislike having to check each thing I buy to ensure it's what I asked for. I crave the rustic sour enough to drive through morning rush hour and construction traffic 7 miles R/T, so it ticks me off to not get it but be charged for it. All the sourdough and day-olds are good. Hella Wet Levain is terrific. The croissants are mediocre compared to Rotha Patisserie on San Pablo. read more

Cheese and Ham turnover pastry is my favorite, warm, fresh, full of filling and hugeee. Such a great Saturday breakfast. Cheese and chive biscuit is my next favorite, I wished it was warm and more cheese since I don't really taste cheddar cheese. Chives was strong at take over the flavor. Everyone is really friendly and the line moves pretty quickly. I ordered the buttermilk jam biscuit, buttermilk biscuit with cheddar cheese, chives, & caramelized onions, jalapeño cheese turnover, cherry puff, blueberry puff, raspberry & chocolate puff, and goat cheese puff. My favorite was the jalapeño cheese turnover. The pastries were all so fluffy and crisp. The puffs have the perfect sweetness.
