First time here to pick up a Too Good to Go surprise bag on a Saturday afternoon. There was a long line to get in, but it moved quickly and the staff were courteous. All of the baked goods were very tempting, but the surprise bag had two baguettes, focaccia, and a ciabatta loaf so we decided not to get any extra treats. We froze one of the baguettes and the ciabatta, but the focaccia and the 2nd baguette were still soft and delicious for our lunch the next day. We will definitely be back, as I was eyeing the cheese twists and the ginger cookies!

Bay area staple that you can't simply go wrong. Line forms early even on a weekday and associate was helpful to suggest her faves. Gotta admit I've only had ACME from grocers or resto and glad to stumble upon this bread company on the way to brunch. Had the cheddar biscuit (still warm), jalapeno cheddar, reg sourdough, pesto slab and almond croissant. By the time I got out, line was even longer!

Having hot marinara meatballs I made with fresh herb focaccia. It's been such a long time. And man, it's sooooo delicious. Just dipping that rectangular wonder in high end EVOO is also heavenly!!!

One of my favorite bakery/bread companies in the bay area, hands down. There are ALWAYS new baked goods to try and rotating/seasonal items as well. I'm not a big fan of gingerbread cookies, but oh myyyyy highly recommend the one here using real ginger! From the moment you step inside, you're greeted by the enticing aroma of freshly baked bread, and it's clear that this bakery takes pride in every loaf they produce. The variety here is impressive, ranging from classic sourdoughs to unique specialties like their rustic pain au levain and walnut levain. Each loaf boasts a perfectly crispy crust and a tender, flavorful crumb that keeps me coming back for more. The sourdough baguette is a personal favorite of mine, with its perfect balance of tangy and savory flavors. The quality and consistency of Acme Bread are unparalleled, making it a staple in the local community and beyond. I also like to check out their daily "day old bread" menu, you get day old bread for almost 50% off, such a steal! Whether you're picking up a loaf for a special occasion or just indulging in a daily bread habit, Acme Bread Company is the go-to spot. It's a bakery that truly embodies the art of bread making, and I can't recommend it highly enough. Trust.

This store front is probably the smallest I have ever experienced. Only two people can fit inside so there will always be a line out the door but they move really fast and the wait is maybe 5-10 minutes. Parking is limited in the front but there is more parking behind the bakery. Bread is fresh and amazing. I haven't had anything that I didn't like. Inside is small but everyone was helpful and happy. Gastro Maestro Approved!!!

My boyfriend took me here for my birthday, and we ordered a couple pastries including - a peach puff pastry, a jalapeño cheese turnover, and croissant with goat cheese and Kalamata olive. All of the things were exquisitely delicious. We had to stand in line for maybe 5-10 minutes and it was bit chilly out, but when I tell you it is worth the wait... it is totally worth the wait. This was my 2nd time at Acme, and I must say that it will definitely not be my last. Parking was not bad but we were there at like 930am, so get there early, it checks off all the vibe checks and it's worth the wait! Parking is small but we had no trouble finding parking.

I came about 10 minutes before opening and there was about 10 people in front of us. It was our first time here, so I felt a little frazzled and rushed during the process since I wasn't sure what was available or what's on the menu. Kinda had to just look around in the store/Yelp as well as ask, but everything was delicious. The pizzas are huge, but so good.

Too Good to Go surprise bag

I happened to be available one day for the pickup window for their Too Good to Go surprise bag, so I ordered it on the app. I was given a massive quantity of bread, some smaller rolls, one unsliced loaf, and a long baguette. It was a really good deal for that quantity of bread for the price, and the baguette was so long it stuck out of the bag. This is a solid place to get plain bread. I wish the surprise bag had continued some of their more interesting flavored items, though.

Acme Bread Company Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Acme Bread Company

Are you open on Tuesday 5/28/24?

Absolutely! Normal hours from 8am-4pm on Monday and Tuesday next week. FYI: The Acme shop in Berkeley is only closed on: Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years Day!

Pain Au Levain - what is the best way to keep a loaf fresh for 8 days?

When the loaf is 1-2 days old, slice it up, and freeze it in a sealed bag. Take out slices as you want them and toast them - we've been doing this for years. These breads freeze very well. You could also just freeze the loaf if you want to keep it…

Hi, Is the chocolate ganache button vegan? Do the almond meringue cookies have egg whites? Would love to see ingredients or vegan labels on pastries.

By definition meringue is made with egg whites. Maybe you should shop at a place that labels everything and has nice plastic wrap too. I'm sure the staff at Acme will do the best to answer your questions, as busy as they are.

Is there a list of breads, like a menu they have available? I can't find it on their website.

No, not really. I think this is cause they are selling so fast they can't tell if at 1o'clock a special kind of bread is still available. But I can tell you it is worth going there especially when you are living in Berkeley. We are driving over…

Are they open during the shelter in place (#covid19)?

Last I saw driving by, they are. Best of luck and stay healthy!

Are there options that are safe for people with multiple tree nut and peanut allergies?

Yes, but there are no gluten-free options! I'd laugh, but it was asked when I was at the bakery.

Do you have any breads using whole wheat?

Yes, I highly recommend the Walnut Levan that was recommended to me.

Do they still give away bread starter?

They did for a good junk of time, however went in today and found out they have stopped at this location. If they begin again, bring a non glass container (kitchen rules)…

Recipe or method for bread crumbs? Stale bread vs. toasted fresh bread?

You can make two ways take two- three day old cut it up bake at 350 in oven 10 min let it cool put in ziplock bag and roll with rolling pin done, you can add seasoning like herbs then refrigerate or after oven put in a food processor fresh bread…

Are the kalamata olive and goat cheese stuffed puffs offered daily? Those were amazing.

yes, but you have to get there early. They only make so many batches per day.

We went when the store is almost closing, so there wasn't that many selection left, but we got the vanilla custard and that was so good full of the vanilla flavor. It's not overly sweet and feel very light. It was so good that I even got another one to take home with me. They also have a good selection of Macaron and they are not overly sweet. They are very light and the seasoning was really well. The cake was also really good. I got one of the chocolate walnut cake and that one was very rich with coffee flavor. I love it. Honestly, they really need to include signs and probably allergen information as well. But I'm not sure if the owners opt to omit the signage on purpose to encourage conversation. Their sandwiches are probably what first got me hooked. The bread is so good, with a chewy inside and a nice crust, and the fillings are always fresh and flavorful. The combinations are also really well thought out. From there, I started working my way through the rest of the menu. I've had their Kouign Amann, Quiche Lorraine, croissants, baguette, Sourdough Batard, Sunflower Rye Spelt, pretzel buns (you can probably tell I'm a bread person), pies, seasonal radicchio salad, and passionfruit madeleines. Their seasonal radicchio salad has actually become one of my favorites to take to work for lunch. I also love that they rotate the Kouign Amann flavors, so there's usually something new to try whenever I stop by. I've enjoyed almost everything I've had here. One pie was a little too sweet for me personally, but that's really the only thing that comes to mind. I also really like the presentation and the atmosphere. The pastry case always looks beautiful and tempting, and the space feels relaxed and welcoming. It's easy to pop in and grab something, but it's also a nice place to meet friends for coffee and something sweet. The prices feel very reasonable for the quality, which is another reason I keep coming back. More than anything, I just really enjoy having Starter Bakery in the area. It's become one of my neighborhood go-to spots, and I always seem to find another reason to stop by.

The ambiance is wonderful - I absolutely love the deep blue color scheme, the cute matching mugs, and gorgeous plants. They have a lot of different pastry choices, but unfortunately, there was only one vegan option: a tiny hazelnut sweet bread. I ordered the bread along with an Americano. When I tried to take the pastry out of the package to share it with my girlfriend, it completely crumbled into a big mess. I went up to the counter to let them know, and the employee told me it was actually meant to be eaten straight from the package. She mentioned it was on the drier side being vegan, she took the crumbled mess and gave me a new one but it ended up having the exact same issue. It wasnt dry, but it just wouldn't hold any moisture and was far too crumbly to eat. For $5, this tiny pastry was a major letdown. To make the interaction weirder, she took the original crumbled bread back from me and I'm only assuming threw it away, which felt entirely unnecessary. Having been vegan for nine years, I've had some truly amazing, moist vegan baked goods, so this was incredibly disappointing. While the vibe and aesthetic are great, the vegan options were major letdown. CC accepted Restroom available

It's like a morning bun, and the texture of the morning bun is light, fluffy. Lots of sugar on it, it shedded everywhere while eating. The filling is the star. The yuzu curd is not too sweet, they really lean into the sour so it balances out the sweet bun nicely. The pandan bun is like nothing I've EVER had. It's the strongest pandan flavored anything I've ever had. You can smell the pandan before you even bite into it. Yuzu Meringue Bun -- Spot on with the cruffin and meringue combination. The yuzu flavor was generous, although it leaned a little too tart for my personal preference. I wished there was more meringue -- perhaps having a layer of meringue in the center would have made it absolutely superb! Brown Butter Mochi Bites -- These were alright, but nothing particularly special. They were missing the signature mochi chewy texture, so they didn't quite feel "mochi" enough to truly be called mochi bites. Sesame Cookie -- Unfortunately, it was too hard and crisp for my liking. Crossubi -- A very unique concept and not bad overall. I just wish the interior wasn't quite as hollow; a little more filling would have elevated it.
