Two years ago I took a laptop to Berkeley Shreds and asked them to remove and destroy the hard drive. I watched the tech open the laptop, remove the hard drive, and take it to a large "shredder" a few fee behind where I stood. He dropped it in, turned it on, and the very loud racket of the grinding destruction lasted, it seemed 15 seconds or so. The other day I took a PC hard drive there for destruction. Because of Covid restrictions, I could not enter beyond the main door. The tech said, "Ten dollars." I gave it to him, and he said "I'll do this right now for you." After creating my receipt, he took the drive to the machine back where I remember seeing it before, near the office. He turned on a switch, I heard a humming, he dropped the drive in the hopper, and all I heard was the same humming, not the loud grinding I'd heard before, which I'm sure would have been very easy to hear even from where I was standing. After a few seconds he turned off the switch, and came back to give me my receipt. I said that it didn't sound as though anything had been ground up. I said I had been there before and this was not what I'd experienced before. He said, maybe it didn't go through. I'll go check for you. He went and got a step-ladder and looked down into the hopper, and gave me a thumbs up. I was uneasy when I left. I phoned a half hour later and spoke with a woman about my concern at not having heard the machine grind anything up. What could she say, but the tech has been destroying hard drives all day; of course it was destroyed. I have been increasingly uneasy since then. read more

I tried to drop off a computer here, thinking it was eWaste Collective next door. You can actually recycle computers here, but there's a small fee, depending on the kind of machine, because they don't donate them anywhere; they only recycle. When we realized that I had mixed up Berkeley Shreds with eWaste Collective, the Berkeley Shreds guy directed me to them, and even let me borrow one of his carts to take my stuff over there. Very nice! I haven't used their shredding system, but I appreciated the help, and at least I know a place to go if I ever do need a computer hard drive destroyed. read more

LOVE this place! Yes, LOVE this place! I spent hours shredding my old bills with my household shredder and woke up the next day with sore thumbs. I decided to look for places that have industrial shredders and would allow me to witness my stuff being shredded since I have so much personal information on everything. Some shredding places claim that they have a locked bin to store the stuff you bring in but who knows if you can trust the driver or the people who handle the shredding. I won't even know if my stuff gets shredded! Here at Berkeley Shred, you park your car at their parking lot, grab one of their carts to unload your boxes, follow the sign to go this friendly guy. He takes stuff out of your boxes and put them into the monster machine while you watch the whole process. $8 for a banker box, $4 for a grocery bag. I thought it's quite reasonable because my banker box can store many mails in it. Many places charge $1 a pound. I think this is a good deal. I went on a Saturday at around 11am thinking there would be a wait. Nope! No wait. I was the only person there. Got everything done in less than 10 minute. Felt so accomplished and secured. The location was very convenient. I exited at the University exit and drove for a few minutes to get there. Went to Whole Food to get some fresh bread and enjoyed it with my Philz's coffee afterwards. read more

Took under 5 minutes with no wait, saw it get shredded and disappear. you pull into warehouse so the unload is super easy and uneventful. I know it's weird to love a recycling and shredding place but I do. The staff is friendly and helpful. We had a ton of cardboard accumulated and they took it all. Who writes a review of a paper shredding place? Well, after the pain and time of going through the file cabinet (check stubs from 2003? What the?!?), Automatic Response Systems was a breath of fresh air (DESPITE the industry surrounding it). I show up with two grocery bags full to the brim of old paper. Super friendly guy grabs them from me right away and throws them on the conveyor belt. I stare at the awesomeness that is the industrial shredder, so he gives me a quick breakdown of how it works (and boy does it!). I took 12 boxes of heavy folders, tons of paperwork and such to be shredded on a Saturday morning. They shredded everything and the best part? They charged $6 a box but the total bill was $60! The owner knocked off an additional $24 to show his appreciation for patronizing his business. They have a huge list of other items that they will destroy and recycle. I love this place! I bring in my box and I watch my info travel down a belt to be shredded and then further up a another belt to be made finer and finally, it goes to a place of no return, where it becomes what looks like confetti pulp. They usually shred it while I am standing there and I walk away feeling empowered, free and happy that my info will never be used by bad guys or girls. I pay $3.50 for a small box every two months. This company is great for secure shredding and for purchasing shredding devices. I found this company last year when I brought 10 years of sorted old files to be shred. I felt very confident in the security and professional team. You can watch your files be shredded or leave them to be shredded within the hour. The fee is very reasonable. I can't remember what it was but I called around and verified it against other companies. They price by the box and consolidated my boxes so I paid less. It is a great location. Easy on/off freeway and have weekend hours. Plus, easy parking in a gated lot. After a few visits I decided to buy one of their shredders. They sell high quality office shredders for your small office/home office. They made me a great deal. Again, I compared it against other brands from my iPhone on the spot. Last week, my mother went in and also received amazing service. She bought a shredder for her office and also felt the service and quality of product / price excellent.
