If I'm gonna go to all of the effort to shred stuff, which I do (as I have been the victim of identity theft and let me tell you that was no fun) then I actually want to see my stuff get shredded. I have a decent shredder at home, but sometimes there is just too much and it all takes so much time. Also, there's the hard drive problem. They don't fit through my shredder. Lol. So many shredding companies come collect your business to purportedly take to their shreddo-factory for annihilation. Nice cuz it's poof just gone. But ...then you have to trust them. I don't. Berkeley shreds is one of the few places I've found where you can take your stuff over and watch it be destroyed. All those 'we pick it up' companies are likely coming here too after they take photos of your important records and sell them. :) If you are paranoid like I am this is the place. read more

My favorite place for shredding documents. I have been going here for years. Prior to Covid, they destroyed hard drives and took older printers, but I am not sure if they do now! FYI, next door they will take electronics. For shredding documents: there is a parking lot with a few spaces on their property. There are also some carts if you have a lot to shred you can use to help instead of lifting -They charge by the bag or the box. When you approach you'll be able to hand off your documents at the table right at the entryway. You can watch (especially if they have sensitive info) your documents being shred and they will ring you up there at the table. Although you can pay with card I suggest bringing some singles for tips for the workers as they have a tip box. read more

These folks don't invest much time answering their phone, so we went there on a prayer that they were open. A GPS will take you to the front door, but that door is locked and you must drive through a gate at the side of the building. I've been coming here for over 10 years now and I couldn't be happier with the service, convenience, location and price. I drop off between 5-8 grocery bags filled with materials to be shredded about once a year. Today, I was there around 9am, and they promptly serviced me. Quick, easy, low cost shredding by the box or in bulk. Pretty good I took 4 kitchen sized full trash bags and it only cost me $17 with tip! Because that girl is working hard for the money. I had 25+ years of bank statements, brokerage statements and tax returns that required shredding. The total weight of these documents added up to approximately 230 lbs, minimum. You figure 23 lbs per bankers box. UPS wants $2 a lb. Office Depot is comparable. Credit Unions don't offer the shred service anymore- or maybe 2x a year if you're ok getting in line. Total cost for 9 bankers boxes: $12! With Bay bridge toll and gas- still worth it read more

I've been writing Yelp reviews for a LONG time but this one's going to be a little different. I use the ewaste facility in downtown Berkeley next to this place and on a recent visit, I noticed that they also do shredding. I had just recently done some house cleaning and had a box of paper that needed shredding. Perfect! So I went down there and they were closed. My fault: I didn't notice the hours. I come back the next day and drop off my ewaste and I go, "Where is paper shredding?" The guy at the ewaste place says, "Oh. They're next door. But they're closed today." For a moment, I was frustrated. But not for long. "Yeah, there was an accident there today. Involving one of their workers. It was kind of tragic." Well THAT stopped me from feeling sorry for myself. Because if a tragic accident happens at an industrial shredding place... there's a pretty narrow range of things that could have happened, and none of them are good. I still have these tax documents I want to get rid of though so I wait a few days and I go back and there's a nice lady there helping the people. I could tell they had a smooth process going on: you just walk up, either give them your box/bag or have them empty and return to you. Pay a few bucks, get on with your day. Easy! I give her my stuff and get rid of it: very relieved. "This is my first time here," I say. "Thanks for making it so easy. I'll be back." "Thanks!" she said. There was no one behind me in line at this point, so I said, "Hey, uh, was there an accident here this week?" "Oh. Um. Yeah." She looked down. "That must be really hard." "It is." "Well on behalf of all of us, thank you so much for showing up to work. It couldn't have been easy, but we really appreciate you." "Wow, thanks." "It's got to be really hard," I repeated. "Yeah, well," she said. "But you're made of tough stuff." "Yeah! I am!" she said, brightening. I asked her name. Folks, if you're like me, and you're lucky enough to have a work situation where the risk of tragic shredding accidents is basically zero, have a care for the others, often out of sight and out of mind, who don't have that privilege. Maybe she owns the place and was covering for someone who couldn't work due to the accident. Maybe she's one of a cohort of workers who know each other, and she's worrying (or grieving) her co-worker. I don't know - I didn't ask about the nature of the accident, and I didn't want to know. But patronize this business, be polite, be accommodating, and if you see Mallory, tell her I said hi. read more

Berkeley Shreds - good, fast, & cheap - with a smile, too! I was heavily into the fast part - there were few days until my flight out, the need to shred papers affecting my identity & security was great, and other shredders required me to request their proposals - a two to four day process for shredding is just unworkable.
