5 stars for the deli workers and cashiers. Zero stars for the quality of food and the cleanliness. This place smells very bad like dirty mop water and mildew/mold. This is an emergency use only kind of store when you're in a pinch. So many times I've purchased expired food or about to expire food without checking the date. My mistake for trusting. Often times you can see milk three days before expiration, chips a week from expiring, frozen food and canned veggies expired that day or next. Salads about to expire next day and so on. It's bad. And very expensive compared to every other store. Mariano's prices. I hate giving bad reviews but this is inexcusable. I really hope they overhaul this store. This berkots has gotten a super makeover in the last few years. Their deli is really good, they have big bundles of fresh herbs, the produce is great, the butcher is great, the liquor section is great, and someone always opens a register when it's busy, on top of that, every time I go, anything i came there for is on sale! I can't believe the rating right now..and they have the dr.brew kombucha. someone also needs to start a GoFundMe page for the sushi guy because the sushi here is awesome too! read more

We won't even bother to grocery shop here anymore. If we need anything we just go to Jewel in New Lenox or Mariano's in Frankfort. Produce from the store is sure to be rotting on the shelves. If it's not already rotted in the store, it's sure to do so within hours of getting it home. The meat selection is very poor. We've walked in countless times to find absolutely zero steaks or normal cuts of meat. The overall selection of items is poor and the items are always past their prime (cue the moldy carrot cake we bought for Easter Sunday - Thanks Berkots!) The store itself is filthy. The staff is careless and there's never enough checkout lanes open. Don't bother asking for help finding something - the apathetic worker will likely shrug and tell you they don't know. Save your sanity, drive the extra five minutes somewhere else. We can only hope that Manhattan will some day get a grocery store that cares about the community and actually provides good options to residents. read more

The friendly cashiers earn them the 2 stars. Sadly disappointed in the quality of the food here as I was a faithful customer of their Mokena store before moving out here. It seems like they sell old inventory in this store. (Is it because it's the only grocery store in town so they don't feel a need to compete?) Here is a list of reasons to just drive to new Lenox or Joliet. 1. Most expensive grocery store ever! I know. We have all been to "Whole Paycheck". Berkots is worse! The place is usurious. And they have no qualms about it. 2. The check out girls sook at bagging. I know. Who am I to talk? In the late 90s, I was one of those check out girls. I knew how to bag. I wasn't wasting bags or giving back reusable bags half full. 3. Expensive. To sum it up, they cost too much due to lack of competition. Berkots is good if you need to grab one or two things. I was in there this morning looking for cottage cheese, and picked up one and looked thought I was seeing things.The expiration date was 1/2/2019, and todays date is 1/27/2019, . I picked up another the date was the same. The whole row of cottage cheese had the same expiration date. I tried different type and it was the same thing. Also looked for orange juice and it was 1/24. Which I did find one that was not out of date. I was truly disappointed have been shopping there for several years. The quality at this store has gone done rapidly . Go there since we have no other choice in this area. LIke a food dessert, I live in Elwood, and Manhattan, or Wilmington is the closest. I try when I can go to the one in New Lenox the quality is so much better. Also selection is better. Something should be done to make management aware of the situation. read more

This store is the worst. My family and I moved here last summer and we thought, great a grocery store .25 miles away from the house. They always disappoint. The milk is always expired if there's any milk at all. After 2 weeks of living in town we now get Oberweis deliveries because I can't count on the store to have fresh milk. I try not to go there but sometimes don't have a choice because I'm short on time. I just ran in to grab some rolls and butter. I get home and see that the butter had already been opened AND used! & the rolls were molded! Like come on! Please pay attention to what you purchase! Or better yet go somewhere else! read more

The problem I have with this place is some of the sale items don't ring up on sale, if you don't watch, they will charge the normal price, and argue with you if you try to correct them. today I went to the one in New Lenox, and since I have had problems in the past I bring the sale paper and the sale price with me. Dinners were 10 for 10 yet they rang up 4 for 5 that's two shy, Pastas were also on sale except for the one I bought, seems I picked the only one that wasn't, It depends whose on at the registers, some make it good some take it away from you if you won't pay full price! It's a local grocery with good items... the prices are a bit high but it saves on travel. They do have some great deals weekly just have to be watching out for them. All the employees are super helpful and friendly... I shop there occasionally... try it out and judge for yourself read more

You aren't going to find better quality meat anywhere around including at expensive butchers. Believe me, I've looked. As for sale prices not ringing up correctly, I won't say it hasn't happened but not often and I'm a crazy coupon person who watches like a hawk. The few times there have been issues they have corrected it without any hassle. As for rudeness, I have NEVER had an issue with that. Matter of fact, the ladies are extemely sweet to me and my two young children. Manhattan is a small town and this is a small town grocery store. I love that I am a human being there as opposed to just another customer like at Jewel. Plus, Jewel meet is only select and it is HORRIBLE. If I could give negative stars, I would. 1. Quality: Poor. Produce isn't fresh like Jewel. I've found expired cheese and yogurt on shelves several times. I have returned meat purchased within 24 hrs due to change in color and bad smell. 2. Service: Bad. 9/10 times no baggers! During even the busiest times like Saturday & Sunday morning and late afternoon on weekdays. Check out takes longer than shopping because the check out girl has to do double duty; scanning and bagging items. 3. Value: Poor. Prices are not comparable to Jewel unless purchasing Centrella brand. Also, they don't value the shopper's time. I am happy to take the extra time to drive to New Lenox to shop at Jewel because I will make that time up by not waiting in long lines because they always have baggers who even ask if you need help out to your car! read more

Pricing, Horrible! Many expired products over the years, watch what you purchase. I sent an email to their corporate office to complain with no response. That proves to me and anyone who is a potential customer that they simply do not care. Living in town it would be so much easier if this Berkots would just be able to keep items in stock. I'm finally done going to this location and then having to go to new Lenox to get the things the Manhattan store is out of. I have heard that this location is their lowest volume Berkots and I can see why. I grocery shop every few days and it is not unusual for them to be out of 3 of the 10 or so items I'm looking to purchase and it's obviously the manager in charge of ordering the items because when I ask if they have it in back they never do. I have on a few occasions complained but it doesn't seem that anyone cares. The Manhattan Berkots has recently made some welcome renovations including a cheese/ deli Island; rearrangement of the produce section and installation of double entrance doors. The store is always clean which is a quality I insist on in stores. While I realize this is the only grocery store in town, its prices are better than the stores you have to drive to another town to get to. I have always found Store Manager Art Magana and his side kick Bob to be accommodating and willing to get items in on special request. This store exudes home town friendliness which is the reason most people moved to Manhattan. I find Berkots the perfect grocery store whether you are looking to do a weeks worth of shopping or a place to stop in when you need just a few things. Manhattan is lucky to have Berkots and its Manager Art. read more

They run a sale and don't have the item. They say tomorrow. When tomorrow comes the price is higher. I travelled back and forth 3 times and showed them the flyer from the Chicago Tribune. After talking with the manager the girl came out with a computer printout that said OOPS! The higher price was listed on it. She said someone must have taken the sign down from the product. After a little more than a year shopping here,this is what I can tell you. 1.New sales start on Monday, but , don't expect to find advertised items in stock, especially in the deli, until at least Wednesday. 2. Be very cautious when purchasing fresh produce, fresh is an incorrect adjective here, try something like moldy, rotting, etc. 3. If the freezers are half empty, just walk away! They probably have not been on, and the products were left in there to defrost, refreeze and resell ( there have been several ice cream returns that I know of). 4. Regarding meat, they do carry choice grade, and it is good, although I have more than once detected a foul odor coming from the cutting and packing area. Having worked in a similar setting in the past, I know that can't be a good thing. 5. Prices,- this is the only grocer in town, Jewel is about 10 miles away, so they can pretty much charge whatever they want. Occasionally there are good sales in the meat dept. Now, this is what actually drove me to yelp today. As I stood at the deli/ bakery waiting for my order, I could not help but to stare dumbfounded, at the lady decorating cup cakes, she would squeeze frosting out of the pastry bag onto her finger, LICK HER FINGER, AND CONTINUE TO DECORATE THE CUPCAKES, YES, IN PLAIN VIEW OF EVERY CUSTOMER STANDING THERE!!!!!!!!
