We had a great anniversary dinner at Bernadette! They gave us the best seat in the house, I had asked for a great seat on my reservation. We started with a glass of wine and a tequila and Mezcal and lime drank, which was amazing. We went to the caviar which came in a suite with egg whites, egg, yolk, onions, and it was superb. Then we had the pork belly and some fresh radishes, which were so fun. The mains were incredible that we both finished ours. I had the duck, and my fiancé had the roasted chicken. We finished off with chocolate mousse, which was great. Our server was funny and attentive, but not obtrusive. We spent a total of about three hours eating and we were never rushed. The courses came out in a sensible way, well paced. It's a fantastic addition to the Salem restaurant scene. We absolutely will return. read more

Absolutely incredible food - masterful work by the chef. The bone marrow is singular - and completely incredible. Not every single dish we tried was life-changingly good, but more than one was - and everything else was excellent. Service was attentive and respectful. Our waitress, Sarah, was friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. The place is clean, spacious, and beautifully decorated. The light fixtures are unique, and the bathrooms are high-end. The dishes are very expensive and small. I had the grilled halibut for $48, and it did not come with any sides. My husbands $18 glass of wine was five sips. I am glad we tried it, but it's "one & done". read more

I was underwhelmed with this place! I will start by saying the service was incredible, it's very clean and comfortable. Bathrooms were even spotless. The main reason I'm rating it lower is for the value. I think the price point is far too high for what we got. Two of the cocktails we got were great while the other two were lacking flavor ($18 each). The apps were lacking in flavor too (though the bone marrow was good and worth it). The mains were good but very small portions. We got a side of broccolini that was good but only a few pieces for $10. Overall I think it's just too overpriced. read more

We just went to Bernadette for a special holiday meal among friends and could not have had a better experience. From the food to the service, everything was exceptional. We were well-cared not only by our server, who was incredibly attentive and made excellent recommendations, but also by the entire team made sure that our waters were filled and our table was bussed between courses. We split several appetizers and an entree special intended to share and were delighted not only by the diversity of the menu, but by the care put into each dish. The bone marrow is a must-order, but I was pleasantly surprised by the octopus. I am normally not a fan, but the texture was perfect and this dish completely converted me. While the wine list is expansive, we went with cocktails because we were celebrating. I ordered a negroni, which was perfect, but my friends ordered from the menu and remarked how subtle and balanced, yet distinct, all of their drinks were. Kudos to the bartender! We had such a wonderful time that when the dessert menu came around, we realized we didn't want to leave, so we ordered a round of espresso martinis and a creme brulee. It was a spectacular end to a wonderful meal and we all agreed we can't wait to come back. read more

Last night at Bernadette's in Salem felt like stumbling into a chic Parisian hideaway--warm wood tables, softly glowing candles and just enough bustle to feel lively without ever getting loud. My daughters and I slipped in for a pre-Mother's-Day treat, and from start to finish it delivered every bit of that special-occasion magic. Kampachi Crudo Delicate slices of "tuna" (here, Kampachi) bathe in a bright pea aguachile broth, dotted with razor-thin fennel ribbons and topped with briny pearls of caviar. Each forkful was a masterclass in contrast: cool, spring-bright flavors cutting through the buttery fish, all balanced by a whisper of citrus heat. Roasted Bone Marrow This was hands-down the richest toast of my life--in the best way. Two cross-cut marrow "canoes" arrived slick and shimmering, nestled atop house-made sourdough. A spoonful of silky shallot confit and a scattering of cornichons lent a vinegary snap that kept the marrow from feeling too indulgent. Spread that glossy treasure on crisp bread and you've found pure umami nirvana. Niman Ranch New York Strip + Pommes Frites The steak arrived medium-rare, its crust seared to a perfect mahogany and sliced to reveal a glowing rose-center. A jus-au-poivre cut through the beef's natural richness, while a handful of tender ramps and enoki mushrooms nodded to the season. But it was the Pommes Frites--paper-thin, golden, dusted with sea salt and served alongside a garlicky aioli--that stole the show. I could've eaten them all (and almost did). Throughout the evening, service struck the perfect note: knowledgeable without ever being overbearing, happy to make wine suggestions and always on hand with a warm smile. Salem has a lot of good restaurants. Now it has a Great One! Bernadette is new to downtown, but the owners are not new to Salem as they own one of the other high end eateries here. And they clearly know how to craft an amazing menu, create a fabulous environment to enjoy the food and hire some pretty terrific staff. Our server last night, Oscar, was friendly, knowledgeable about the offerings from both the kitchen and the bar, and made appropriate recommendations based on the several queries we all had. He helped elevate the experience from just eating out to dining. The vibe here is definitely upscale, and it's not aimed at the typical Salem/Halloween Tourist crowd. If you're looking for that special occasion place, this is it. If your looking for a place to make any meal a special occasion, Bernadette is also it. You won't be disappointed. read more

We chose Bernadette's in Salem, MA to celebrate my wife's birthday in November of 2025 after hearing positive reviews and expecting a higher-end dining experience. Unfortunately, the evening was disappointing from both a service and food standpoint. We started with cocktails, which were well made. After that, the experience declined. The hors d'oeuvres were underwhelming, and the main issues came with our entrées. I ordered the Coq au Vin and my wife ordered the Sunchoke Risotto. My entrée arrived cold, my wife's was barely warm, and there was a hair on the rim of her plate. We informed our server, who apologized and sent both dishes back. When the entrées were returned, the temperature issue had been fixed, but my replacement dish was not the same as what I originally received. The first plate had two pieces of chicken, while the replacement had only one, despite only a single bite having been taken from the original dish. At that point, after multiple problems, I chose not to raise another issue and we finished the meal. Overall, the food was mediocre and did not meet expectations for the price or the restaurant's reputation. Service felt inattentive throughout the evening, and the handling of the mistakes did little to improve the situation. We ordered dessert, received the bill, and found that nothing had been adjusted or acknowledged beyond the initial apology. Given the number of issues, I was surprised that management made no effort to address the experience or make things right. I did not ask to speak with a manager at the time because it was my wife's birthday and I did not want to cause a scene. In my 15 years of living in Massachusetts, this is one of the very few restaurants that has genuinely stood out to me for its exceptional quality and pristine dishes. I have been to Bernadette twice and I don't think I need to return.  While the ambiance is elegant and hip for Salem, and the servers are very efficient -  the portions and the rules are not worth the cost. The first time was a nice experience with two exceptions. I asked to taste the chablis before committing to a glass and I was told by the server they "don't do tastings." Strike 1. My friend and I ordered an appetizer and drinks (the server came over a few times before we were ready) and we were told we needed to order everything at once. So much for having a relaxing meal. While the food was good, I felt rushed. Strike 2. I truly wanted to like this place so my boyfriend and I went a few months after that experience since I wasn't completely turned off and the food was good. We got there promptly at 5 and there was already a line at the door waiting for them to open. We sat at the bar and I ordered the chablis again. For $18 -- I swear I got no more than a 4 oz pour. This is the kind of place where the service borders between efficient and/or they are trying to rush you out the door with people constantly coming up and removing plates and empty glasses. I appreciate the attentiveness, but it's annoying. I had to tell two people to leave the bread since we weren't done with it. My boyfriend ordered a chicken dish and I ordered the gnocchi. The chicken dish wasn't memorable according to him. My dish had maybe 5 or 6 pieces of gnocchi. What we paid for was absolutely not worth it. Also, there was a steak special on the menu for $156. WTF? Finally, as we were leaving, two ladies next to us at the bar were eating burgers with fries. My boyfriend asked how they got that because he didn't see it on the menu. They said the bartender offered it to them on a previous visit ---we were not given that option at all. Our meal, with tip, cost $170. We are two people who had two meals and two drinks and walked out still kinda hungry -- that was strike 3. As a Salem resident, there are more places to go to that are less expensive and you get more for your money. read more

My wife and I are huge fans of their sister restaurant Settler (which i still consider to be one of the best restaurants in the greater Boston area). Bernadette is definitely a close 2nd. All of the food / cocktails were excellent and the service was great. It's definitely has the same upscale vibe as settler. I highly recommend checking it out. read more

We went on a Tuesday to celebrate my boyfriend and let me tell you - the interior is beautiful! The food was immaculate. We started off with their truffle flatbread, mushroom&hen egg, bone marrow toast, and oysters. They were delicious. We had a wonderful server who has worked in upscale restaurants before and told us about how he had gotten into Bernadette's. The drinks were great! I had a gin drink named after the restaurant while my boyfriend had the tequila espresso martini. His mom had Sauvignon blanc and his father another gin cocktail on the menu. Two of us had the swordfish (my first time - trying to be good about trying new things!) while the other two had the pork chop and chicken dishes. We were amazed. Celebrated my son's birthday last night at Bernadette. The food and service were fantastic. However, the wine selection is, unfortunately, simply awful. 70% of the Reds are Pinot Noir. For how fantastic the food menu is, the selection of wines are not comparable. I think that is a shame as the menu lends itself to great pairings. Hopefully, in the future, more attention will be paid to the wines. The cocktail menu is really great. The only other thing that holds me back from giving them a perfect review, besides the wines, is there is no sugar substitute in the place. I ordered a caffe latte after dinner. It was served with no sweetener. When I asked, I got raw cubes. When I asked for sugar substitute, I again got cubes. Finally, someone told us, we have none and brought me granulated sugar in a bowl. Like many people, I don't eat real sugar or try and limit it. It seems odd they do not have this. However, the food, the cocktails, the service and the decor were amazing! Cant wait to go back. I hope they work on their wines and diversify to compliment the food, and please get some sugar substitute for coffee. read more

I'm pretty hard to please food wise, being from Louisiana, and I must say that while I still love settlers, this is one of my new favorite restaurants in Salem. We were seated right next to the kitchen and the waiter area. We had wait staff running by us to the waiter station right decided us. Nothing but noise and confusion. I would have asked to change the table to another location but our friends had seated themselves already. All I can say is this is an over priced quasi- French menu in a noisy college cafeteria type setting. I had a pulled duck appetizer that was really not at all good -a weird duck sausage. The plate was practically empty so they slapped some stale grilled bread beside it. Also ordered Branzino sashimi that was served very prettily as an appetizer with about half an ounce of actual fish in it. This is an incredible addition to the northshore food scene. The service is lights out. The oysters are mind blowing. The Tarte Flambée is lovely. The Beef Cheek Bourguignon is a 10 out of 10. It's overrated. The tables for two are so close together that it ruined my dinner. I could hear the conversations on both sides. I've never experienced anything like this before! If you're going to spend your money, I'd say "no way!" The pork was just okay--dry and lacking flavor. The other dishes we ordered were also bland and needed more salt. The bread with butter they served us at the beginning was nothing special, and for me, that was a sign that the rest of the meal would be disappointing.
