This place is an absolute hidden gem. Tucked behind Traditions this is one of the handful of places I would recommend to anyone. Had the Crab Stuffed Flounder and the wife had the Sea Bass. Absolutely some of the best I've ever ever had. We were seated in accordance with our reservation and Ryley took excellent care of us. He recommended a great bottle of Caymus Cab and we were not disappointed. We thought long and hard over dessert but decided that finishing off the bottle was our dessert! Went here for the first time. Bernard is a wonderful host and has traveled all over the world. We sat at the bar and he made us some great drinks, they were perfect. When we sat down at the table Bernard brought us another round of drinks and we asked him for dinner recommendations. He suggested the Halibut. I can tell you that this was one of, if not the best pieces of fish we ever had. Needless to say we would highly recommend Bernards and can wait to come back. Great job Bernard!!! read more

Was looking forward to this restaurant for a long time. Beautiful restaurant and excellent service. Good bread and that is it. Had veal picatta and looked as though it was boiled meat and tasted that way. My husband had fettuccine stroganoff and said it tasted like nothing. Won't be back. This place is amazing, hands down! The atmosphere is very intimate and inviting; candle-lit tables, low, dramatic lighting and wonderful Mediterranean music softly playing. Our server, Riley, was very prompt and guided us to our wine selection to start our culinary journey. We settled on a bottle of Prisoner which was a perfect compliment to my meal to come. Riley showed off his memory by reciting all of the mouthwatering featured items in acute detail. My wife was won over by the scallops and I simply had to try the rack of lamb! It had this green sauce on it (shoog, I think he said) that was amazing! Somehow I forgot to mention the calamari and mussels that we had to start our meal (we were definitely indulging, but it was so worth it!). Our appetizers were preceded by their bread and olive dip, then the appetizers came out (and were delicious), and right as soon as we finished with the appetizers, like some kind of psychic, Riley came out with our dinner salads, took our plates and the next course was on, and just like that, again, as soon as our salads were finished, the plates were gone and a moment later our entrees were there in all of their glory. Now, I've had lamb quite a few places before, but let me tell you, this lamb cannot be beaten! My wife was raving over the sea bass and I'll admit, I'm not much of a fish guy, but I had a bite and was blown away! We finished up our meal by taking a tuxedo cake home (no way I was fitting that in at the table, but I just couldn't resist!), and all told, Riley really made the experience special by being professional, courteous, and genuinely funny with little quips here and there. My favorite restaurant in Tyler or Dallas. Been here many times. Never a bad experience. Food and service excellent. Wine suggestions by owner are always perfect. Wine prices are noticeably less expensive than other restaurants; about 7% -10% more than store prices. Great martini. This place is as close to a neighborhood New York restaurant as you'll find. Staff remembers my name and preferences, even favorite table. They specialize in accommodating. My wife never orders from the menus; she ask the chef to prepare la da da and they do it. Very disappointed in their trickery on September 25, 2018: 1) Website plainly states: "Every Tuesday is 1/2 price select appetizers for ladies 5:30 - 9:30PM". What is not stated in invisible ink is that the 1/2 price only applies to the bar and patio areas not the main restaurant. So our party of six (3 appetizers) got screwed when we were presented our bill and the ladies ordered appetizer "super secret" was explained by our waitress. Very deceptive, it's a bait and switch! 2. My wife ordered a Kahlua on the rocks. The drink was $6 (not bad price) and the ice was another $3 (outrageous price for six ice cubes). What a ripoff !! At no time was she informed that ice was an additional charge. WTF?? I guess she should have known to order the Kahlua straight up and then spoon ice from our water glasses? Really, more trickery! 3. When the bills were presented, they presumptively added a 20% gratuity with no explanation. Upon further investigation, we determined we could have marked through their 20% gratuity and put our amount in the "Gratuity (2)" area. I will tip generously for good service cuz that's what a tip is all about. So all of their waiters and waitresses deserve a 20% tip regardless of the service? I don't think so. 4. This will be our last trip to this deceptive restaurant regardless of the food quality. You've been warned. read more

We went for lunch. Had never been except for dinner & was always very expensive. Lunch was much more reasonable & absolutely wonderful. My husband had a mixed seafood over pasta & I had almond topped trout with mashed potatoes & green beans. I was recently in Tyler looking for a "nice" place to take clients for dinner. Thanks to Russel P. I was extremely satisfied with our choice of Bernards Mediterranean Restaurant. As he warned, it was hard to find. I got directions from two different people, neither helped. Finally we were fortunate to stumble upon it in a strip center. Once inside, you really forget you are in Tyler, TX. We had an attentive waiter with a charming accent. When they were out of the bottle of wine I ordered, Bernard himself came over with four bottles to suggest to me - all at the same price or under the price I was originally asking for. We chose an Italian wine that I've never tried before - and his recommendation was delicious. For starters we selected the baked brie and I had the French onion soup (awesome). One of my clients ordered the vegetable soup and said it was excellent as well. The palm and artichoke salad looked like the way to go - drizzled in a balsamic reduction, my client cleaned her plate and said if she would have been at home she would have licked the plate! For entrees we all selected something of the verbal seafood specials. I ordered the sea scallops in a creamy wine sauce, someone else ordered the red fish with crab meat on top and someone else at my table ordered the blackened salmon. All of us were very pleased with the service, atmosphere, wine, and food. Excellent - a real gem in the middle of east Texas. We skipped dessert - went to Andy's Custard on the way back to our hotel. We went to Bernard for a group event and were seated in the wine cellar room. Great atmosphere! The wine recommendation was excellent. The filet of beef was well prepared and tender. The service was attentive but not hovering. All said I would highly recommend this restaurant if you're in Tyler. read more

We arrived at 6:50 for a 7:00 reservation. We were told that we would.be seated in 15-20 mins. When asked if we wanted anything from the bar we indicated that we had planned on purchasing a bottle of wine. We were asked if it would be red or white and when we answered red they gave us two glasses of red on the house. We were seated around 7:30. We ordered the stufffed mushrooms as an appetizer and a bottle of Duckhorn merlot. The appetizer was delicious!. There was very little breading and lots of crab with the mushrooms surrounded by a wonderful cream sauce. The house salad was just ok. The dressing was too sweet for my taste. However, the scallops and sea bass were amazing and I don't particularly like seafood! I have never tasted fish as good as the sea bass before. Don't ever pass it up if it is the special that night. All in all the evening was a great success! It was a very nice way to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary! read more

The food is simply outstanding, cooked to perfection. Great, quiet candlelight atmosphere with flawless service. The only very minor drawback was the ho-hum house salad. We both selected from the night specials vs menu. Be prepared, whereas most of the listed prices average around $16 or $17 per item, our red snapper and salmon were $32 each, and the house wine is $10 a glass. Still, for oustanding food and experience, it is well worth it for occasionally treating yourself. We will definitely return. Ok. Here's the skinny. In town on business and checked yelp to see what my options are. Wanted steak and was staying at the Fairfieild inn an didn't want to travel too far. His was 10 minutes away. First arrived at 6 pm on a Tuesday night. A few folks dining and I was seated immediately with no reservation. Please note that the prices on their yelp menu page must be ten years old. Increase them by at least 30%. I started with a glass if wine and was disappointed with their wine list. They only had three reds served by he glass and no Malbec and only one cab - domino. They did have a couple others open when I asked but nothing impressive. I got the house cab for $9 a glass. The waitress brought the bread and I lives the olive relish and olive oil. I ordered the ribeye Provençal for $29. It came with asparagus and mash potatoes but they substituted the potatoes for spinach! The steak came and I was greatly impressed. It had to be 18 ounces and cooked perfectly as were the veggies. Overall I gave a 4 stars. The steak exceeded my expectations, the waitress was great and very knowledgable. The ambiance was nice and not too bright. I will come back again. In my opinion they would serve themselves well with an updated and improved wine list. read more

I read the other reviews and couldn't wait to try this place. I was traveling alone on business and the guy was shocked when I said 1 for dinner. He then told me they had big tables only. I looked to the right and there was rooms with a bar with tables and I asked if I could eat in there he said yes?! I started with the stuffed mushrooms very bland and thin flavorless sauce. The salad was good. The entrée took forever (15 minites after finishing my mushrooms and salad) stuffed chicken wrapped in a puffed pastry was served with the puff pastry still raw on top. They took it back and cooked another one. The second one was still raw on top. I think it was the strips of puff pastry that kept the bottom layer from being cooked. The flavor again was pretty bland. The didn't charge me for the entire meal and brought me a free 2nd glass of wine and desert. The owner and waitress we're very accommodating and apologetic. I give them 3 stars due to this fact. I will try them again but will stay away from the stuffed chicken and stuffed mushrooms. read more

I live here in Tyler. I've been to Bernards and enjoyed the food very much. To me eating at a locally owned establishment has a better feeling than dining at national chains. My friend and I were passing through Tyler and were looking for a place to eat. She located this restaurant through Yelp. We had a little trouble finding the place (a GPS problem not the restaurants). The restaurant is well in back of the entrance, so keep looking (it is worth it). The food was very good. We love Bernard's and is our "special occasion " go to place...with that being said, I'm not sure what was going on on our last visit. Reservations were perfect, table location was perfect and when ordering drinks they were out of Diet Coke, actually anything diet, 1 Dr Pepper, not a huge deal, but definitely odd for a couple reasons. It's Mother's Day weekend, there's a WalMart not 1/2 mile down the street to get items and surely they saw they were out when they got there to open. Also our table got the last canned coke and it was split between 2 kids and an adult for a mixed drink. After listening to the specials, everyone in our group of 10 ordered. Shortly thereafter, our waitress- she was awesome--came back to table and asked my husband if there was another special he was interested in - they were out of scallops, which was one of the many specials. Why even have it as a special when you don't even have it on hand ? Our reservations were not late in the evening- they were at 6:30 with a minimal crowd. Plus side, all the food was great we were able to get was fabulous- the sea bass is to die for! Just really puzzled by the lack of preparation for a weekend which included Mother's Day. read more

Outstanding food and service! We walked in at 1:30 and, when asked, I found out they closed at 2:00. We were not rushed in any way and were made to feel welcome. Ashley's recommendations were accurate descriptions of the entrees -- which were amazing. The house dressing, as well as the sauces are all hand made on site. We're from Austin and were visiting a relative in the hospital there. What a wonderful find in Benard's!! This beats do many of our Austin favorites. The food was great. Great bread, calamari and a crab cake appitizer. Both a house and a Ceasar salad were good. Really nice salmon with crab topping and a filet. Just a wonderful dinner perfectly prepared. Service was excellent. The atmosphere was relaxing after a long drive and stressful hospital visit. We'll be back to this gem of a restaurant. read more

Bernard's has been serving fine food in Tyler for years. Bernard and his entire staff are always very courteous. Their seafood and filets are outstanding. The specials are very good. He may run out of a particular bottle of wine, but always have several recommendations in it's place. He has never steered us wrong with his recommendations. Hard to find location, but the ambience is very nice. Definitely worth going to for a special occasion, company in town, or just want a nice dinner out at a locally owned restaurant. read more

I had gone to Bernard's several times in the past, 2-3 years before, and loved it. But last night for my husband's birthday we were in Tyler and I decided to take him there since he had never been. I was expecting a wonderful evening but instead we were very disappointed. It's dark, loud and the menu was very limited and expensive. We arrived at Bernard's around 6 and there were very few people there yet but the service was still incredibly slow. We had my 11 year old daughter was with us and her meal alone was $19.98 since there were not smaller options. I got a tri colored ravioli with shrimp and crab meat on top in a sundried tomato sauce. Sounded good but the dish came with 4 ravioli and 2 pieces of shrimp on top. I disliked the sauce and never tasted any crab. I ate 2 of the four small pieces and our waitress never bothered to ask if there was an issue when she finally came back around at the end of the meal. She just wanted to clear the plates. My husband ordered a ribeye that arrived to the table almost the size a brick and it look beautiful. He ordered medium. Unfortunately there was not any mediterranean seasoning on it and it was raw in the middle. Again we didn't see the waitress until she wanted to clear the plates. She never questioned his steak or my meal. But I will say that we ordered water to drink and the girl filling our water was on top of it. We never had a half empty glass. Our bill was over $70 with water to drink and no appetizers. It would have been better to have gone to Olive Garden and half the price. read more
