I have not had such terrible salmon in years - I ordered the citrus pepper salmon today - gag - it tasted like mud cat - the fishy taste was overpowering and terrible. Fresh greens & all the usual salad bar suspects with soup, baked potatoes & a variety of fresh breads. I had one of the daily specials, King Ranch Casserole w/ choice of salad. House, Caesar or strawberry. I chose the strawberry, arugula, spinach, sliced strawberries, toasted almonds (?) & a delicious vinaigrette. Very good. Interesting gift shop, also. I bought a driftwood looking teak bowl, on sale 50% off. Way cool. Recommend this restaurant to all, not a she-she girlie tea room. This place is wonderful. Half gift shop. Half restaurant. Really love the whole set up inside. I've been in Tyler bout 10 years and this was my first time here. The gift shop has many different things to choose from. From clothes, jewelry, hand bags - to - Christmas decor, candles, dishes etc. they have just about everything you can gift. Lol. After we walked around the gift shop. We stayed and ate in the little cafe area. Very cute. I had the queso and chips appetizer and the French dip with mashed potatoes. The queso was very tasty. As was the French dip which was served with aus jus. The restaurant could use a little bit more light considering it was a bit dark in there. Like it was suppose to be a romantic place. We're Dallas-ites and we love eating good, quality food. However, we are able to change expectations when we travel. Tyler is Tyler. It's not Dallas - home to James Beard-winning chefs. You're not going to find a restaurant to complete with Austin's Uchi in a town that has long lines for Red Lobster on Valentine's Day. But Tyler has some good local mom and pop restaurants. Potpourri House is one of those places. They have fancy Tyler food, friendly wait staff and a very nice salad bar. All of the creamy soups taste very similar, but they are good - and who needs to have more than one cup of soup anyway? We ate dinner there with the in-laws and various others this weekend. The Mr and I both had the salad bar for our supper, along with a cold glass of Pinot Grigio. the salad bar offered spring salad mix with several topping options, several creamy salads - including the ones that everyone loves to mock but secretly loves to eat like broccoli raisin and pimento cheese - as well as smoked salmon and baked potatoes. All in all a satisfying dinner and a far better option for a meal than Red Lobster, Texas Roadhouse or Luby's. read more

We celebrated my grandmother's 90th birthday here with some 30+ cousins and family, some of whom my grandmother had not seen in maybe 30 years. The Potpourri House event planner fit us in after plans didn't work out at another venue. He was so helpful in our planning, as we live in Arizona. The small room we had completely fit our needs. They allowed us to bring some decorations, and provided a small table so we could have a TV, speaker and computer with slideshow. The food was delicious and wait staff were very accommodating, especially with the 3 children we had attending. We had to be out by a strict time frame, but we had plenty of time to visit and clean-up. I commend the staff at The Potpourri House, and it's owner, for the beautiful establishment they have and helping us make my grandmother's 90th birthday one none of us will forget. Food is incredible, you can't go wrong. Nathan ator is the best server I have ever had. He is very sweet, patient, attentive, diligent, hard working, memorable, and not a bad looking young man. Ambiance is being redone and it is starting to come together. We always leave Nathan 40% tip, because he is awesome and we have the same name. The Potpourri House. This is the perfect Old Lady Truck Stop restaurant. First it's inside a cute lil store that sells candles, jewelry and wind chimes. That was a hint that this was gonna be bad. Then comes the menu - an eclectic list of items with no theme of what they are good at. My table had the chicken salad sandwich, southwest chicken salad, chicken tenders (I got one of those kids) and smoked meatballs with penne. Without a doubt this place should focus on their sandwiches. The $11 salad came with wilted lettuce and stale tortilla chips. The smoked meatballs were a stolen recipe from the spaghettos with the "smoke" added to the marinara via the touch of BBQ sauce. Seems to me more of a mistake than a choice. The chicken tenders were well received but paled to those served at whataburger. My suggestion that if ya need a candle or wind chime stop on by - but get your meal at a local fast food spot. You will save some cash and get a meal you expect. read more

Ordered a turkey dinner for Thanksgiving that included a fully cooked turkey breast, gravy, dressing, and cranberry sauce. The instructions stated to cook in the oven for 35 minutes. Upon inspection of the turkey we realized our turkey breast was not cooked and so after 5 hours our turkey was done. This was not how we expected our day to go and at $139 we could have grabbed a turkey from the grocery store for far less (we were paying for convenience). I contacted the company to see if there was a mix up with our order and I was told by Les Ellsworth that I did receive a fully cooked turkey. I was stunned that the restaurant didn't listen to me and offer an apology when I said it took 5 hours to cook. Having cooked many turkeys I know the difference and know that a cooked turkey would have been destroyed after 5 hours (BTW after 5 hours in the oven at over 300 degrees the turkey was moist and flavorful for an uncooked turkey). I didn't ask for a refund or anything either, just clarification on the mix up and perhaps them taking ownership of a total screw up, but nope. Would not recommend as their customer service is awful. read more

What's Happened? Haven't been in for about 6 months. Store Sat &Sun almost no retail items to chose from, big empty floor space. Very young retail staff, never acknowledged even one of the 2 customers. Nothing to choose from, used to be so full of beautiful gifts, jellies, dip mixes, jewelry. Gave up , went to dining area to grab some of their to go products for sandwiches. Got home to find cottage cheese totally soured, nasty. Do they not check dates? Totally unique place that we love to bring out-of-towners to for a well-rounded intro to Tyler. Definitely has an established clientele as others have pointed out here, but it's a happening spot with the younger set as well. No chain restaurant stuff here. Unexpected dishes on the menu. Gift store that goes on and on and has something for everyone, even great classic toys for kids. My wife got an outfit in their clothing store and it's one of the classiest things she owns. For dining, we love to go here for a romantic dinner or for long parties with friends. The wait staff is classy and helpful. Haven't had a bad item yet from their time-tested menu. And the owners are usually around to greet and check on us. All in all, it's a can't-miss spot when you're in Tyler or have friends in from out-of-town. Had Waitr deliver lunch today...Seafood platter was great..fish super fresh, flavorful & cooked to perfection... Sesame Tortilla Encrusted Chicken not so much..lacked flavor. **Note If you're wanting coleslaw they do not serve the normal cabbage coleslaw, theirs has kale, carrots & other greens with way too much of some kind of dressing...I wouldn't recommend it...I suggested they put their ingredients on their kind of "coleslaw" so folks will know they're not getting a cabbage slaw....AND, please know that I definitely recommend The Potpourri House as I have had many, many excellent dishes there and will continue to order and eat there... read more

My book club had our end of the year party here. This was my first time as I joined this year, but this is where they have their annual party at every year. I have heard good things about this place so I was eager to finally try it out. I found parking in a second as the parking lot was pretty empty at 6pm on a Thursday. The menu was flat and only had two sides. My book club sisters kept saying the menu had slimmed down alot. It was easy for me to choose what I wanted due to that reason. I went with the chicken fried steak, twice baked potato, with broccoli. Good: service was great and he had us laughing. We were separated from the normal dining area which was good. Ok: The twice baked potato was decent, could have been better. The bread was good, could have been softer. Broccoli was good and had a nice crunch to it. Bad: My food was served Luke warm, almost cold. In fact my broccoli was pretty much cold. The chicken fried steak had no flavor. I wouldn't return on my own. read more

I have only had the salad bar so I can't speak on other menu items. Nice play to have lunch/brunch . The salad bar has several types of salads , cold pasta options and baked potatoes. They usually have 2 different soup options that changes daily . It is 10.25 for the salad bar. I have noticed the price going up over the last year or two. Not too bad but for lunch it is an occasional treat for me. They also have a large boutique type store that offers a range of items like clothes , candles and Pandora jewelry. read more

This review is strictly based on my shopping experience...was here last weekend with my family and purchased an entire paper sack full of stuff for $13.00!! The sale rack here is pretty amazing! They have really great decor pieces...I love the Tyler Candles, the silver room in the back, the kid gift section, and they had a killer sale on their Christmas merchandise. The staff was super helpful and packaged all my stuff in boxes to keep it from breaking, and even gift wrapped an item free of charge...I always stop in here when visiting in Tyler, but have yet to dine here...maybe next time...If grandma's dine here it must be good!! Our cousin's rehearsal dinner was hosted at the Potpourri House last night. They had at least sixty guests and the large group was accommodated easily in a separate room. Wine and beer was served quickly and efficiently by wait staff rotating throughout the room. We also received a table tent identifying which main dish we preferred to be served once dinner time came around. Smart, savvy, and quick way to ensure proper dishes get delivered to the people wanting them. I have to admit--The Poppourri House didn't knock my socks off from the outside. It looked like a town hall style building that would serve some generic dishes. I was wrong. I said it. Dead wrong. The salad, chicken, veggies, and potatoes I was served were some of the best I've ever had. I know-it sounds crazy. But the chicken was cooked perfectly. The salad was fresh and the dressing was a lovely compliment. And did I mention the dessert? The cheesecake was to die for. And I say that as a true LOVER of cheesecake. It's always my go to. And if I lived in Texas, I would be back for the cheesecake. Numerous times a week. That said, why four stars? The ambiance leaves something to be desired. There's a chintzy gift shop in the front of the restaurant...maybe that's a Texas thing? And the fake plants, shrubs, and lights throughout the building were cheesy. So was the mini waterfall/fountain. But, the restaurant was clean. Last but not least, in the rehearsal dinner contract must have been a requirement that we vacate the room by a certain time in order not to be charged extra. I was in the parking lot and I could already tell who the Potpourri house catered to - grandmothers. It made sense... this was the restaurant my husband's grandmother chose for lunch. so Grandma, my mother in law, my husband and myself went in. The ladies (excluding me) wanted to check out the after Christmas sale on tree ornaments. The boutique in front has again, the kind of things you'd expect grandmothers to want to buy. Christmas ornaments, ceramic knick-knacks, coffee mugs with cartoons of middle aged women lamenting their youth, rhinestone-covered umbrellas, etc. After we browsed a little, we were sat. We all four decided to go with the buffet. It's pretty meat heavy, but they have baked potatoes, which was good. I ate one of those, some fruit, and a salad. Our server was fabulous and had a beautiful accent. After we started eating is when it got weird. An elderly woman started going from table to table modeling outfits- first a floor-length red raincoat with matching umbrella. She walked around to each table, including ours, starting with a 360 degree twirl. Her perfume was ridiculously strong and overly flowery. Ugh. After a confused look from us, she said, "We hope you're having a lovely time here" and walked away. I guess she works there or something and was trying to push the merchandise? It was so awkward. Then, a little while later, she made the round again with a rhinestone-covered sweater. It was off-putting to me. If i wanted to shop, I'd go shop. I want to eat without being inundated with sales pitches. Like Scott said, this place seemed good for Tyler. There were a few tables with non-seniors, mostly brides-to-be with big binders meeting who I assume were potential vendors. If it was up to me, I'd probably avoid the Potpourri House, but since Grandma loves it, chances are we'll meet again. read more

Not just for old people! That's crazy talk! (I'm 27) Love the Potpourri House! Great salad bar- especially the pimento and cheese and strawberry salad with the strawberry poppyseed dressing. Amazing! Also, all the cream-of soups are out of this world. Live music on some weekends. Great atmosphere and you can stop in and get gifts for birthdays and holidays. Try the spiced tea! :) read more
