Well. The food was outstanding. The service was so bad we'll never go back. We were sat over 30 minutes after our reservation time. Ok it gets busy. Not a deal-breaker. Once our appetizer finally came out (an hour after we were sat) the fun began. It wasn't what we ordered. The waiter said he knew we didn't order it..? So we thought hey maybe there was a mix up and they had an extra so he wanted us to try it. Ok. But we never got the one we ordered. ? And we weren't told why. And by the way, had we just eaten it without paying attention, and had one of us been allergic to shellfish, this would've been an entirely different night. Shellfish allergies are fairly common. You don't slip fried oysters in without telling your guests what it is and making sure it's ok with them. 20 minutes later we are still trying to figure out what happened. Over 30 minutes after that and we still haven't gotten our entree...or the right appetizer...or the bread we asked for (which was also excellent. We just couldn't get him to bring any more). At this point, remember we were sat after 7:30, it's almost 9:30. No entrees. Finally we are told that the table next to us ordered the exact same thing we had. The kitchen thought it was a duplicate order so they didn't make ours. Perfectly understandable. Giving us the wrong appetizer because ours didn't get made and trying to pass it off as 'oh I wanted you to try this'? No more bread (when even that would've helped since we had no food)? Sitting there for 2 hours before we get an entree? NO explanation until we finally go to the manager and complain? A glass of champagne and a piece of cake for free doesn't make up for that. Yeah the appetizer wound up being free also but it wasn't what we ordered so we weren't going to pay for that anyway. Had we been told what happened when it happened then maybe a piece of cake would've fixed it. Great food. But not good enough to make up for such poor service. When you spend over $100 for two people to eat, not counting the tip, you expect excellent service. Yes we tipped anyway (although the more we thought about it later we wished we had tipped less). Chick Fil A pays more attention to what they're doing than what we experienced that night. We won't go back. read more

Bernard has been serving Tyler fine food for a long as I can remember. If you want a quick meal, then hit a chain restaurant. The pace here is slow, and the lighting is dark. The wine list is impressive, providing they have then wine in the first place. I gave the 5th star because when Bernard is on, it's a great meal, but I have been disappointed a few times as well. Always consider the specials. These usually include sea bass, lamb, and trout. If they have scallops, then I usually can't resist. For the simple meal, you really can't miss with the tortellini. The house and Greek salads are good, but avoid their ranch dressing as it comes out as a thick mayo-like goo, and is nasty to boot. read more

First, the food is good. It is. But they are NOT $$. We were shocked when we got the bill - the specials were over 2x the price of entrees in the actual menu. Granted, we should have been more diligent about asking for prices, but $70 for an entree? When asked she compared the prices to the entrees so we thought we were safe, but that wasn't true. If the prices were as advertised, this review would have been a 5. But since the waitress didn't even inform us of the prices, we felt gouged. Very unprofessional. read more

We go to Bernards a few times a year and usually have a very good dining experience. When it is just the two of us, we are seated quickly and the service is lovely. However, whenever we have a party larger than 2, despite having a reservation it takes about 20 minutes to be seated. To add insult to injury, there is nowhere to wait. We stand, awkwardly, in the hall that guests walk through to be seated. Sometimes we are offered a seat in the bar, but not during our last visit when we couldn't even get anyone to make eye contact with us after the hostess told us that our table wasn't ready. We were seated for our 7pm reservation at 7:22. Fortunately we have had very good experience with the waitstaff. Our waiter during this visit knew the wine list and menu and provided an excellent pace to the meal. Our food is almost always the best in town. Our check is rarely under $100 when there are two of us and with a group that is drinking wine, well it gets pricey. Still, well worth it, considering Tyler is short on options. I am doubtful they will ever choose to fix the reservation issues. My guess is that they would rather keep the restaurant full, than worry about seating guests quickly. Still, a more thoughtful approach to how the waiting guests are treated would make this Tyler's best dining option. read more

Worst service & food evening ever! We sat in a corner the waitress was trying to squeeze in behind our chairs to check the wines for her order which was very rude & we told the owner. We ran out of drinks and they weren't very busy. Bread was stale. Had to send steak back wasn't cooked properly, was over cooked asked for medium rare, we asked to speak to the owner but he started off being very mad and starting yelling at me & my husband. We told him this is crazy we aren't cussing at you or yelling just explaining the situation. He said here the steak was cooked nicely & you think you can send it back. We said that's the customers discretion it was not to our liking & over cooked. He was also mad that we requested cream of horseradish they made and brought out to our table he was angry because it's not on the menu, we mentioned it's not that hard to make a simple request then your staff shouldn't have okayed it. We told him this is crazy we are just going to leave we don't want to stay you are fixing and we will leave, he started yelling / cussing at us for his sake there was no one in the room we were in good for him, we at this point were raising our voices at him , he was out of control & we told him we were going to call the police and wait out side, he told the hostess to call police and that we were not allowed to leave our table. Then we kept talking to him trying to get him to understand why we were mad we also made him aware he was cussing at us which was not acceptable. We do understand the kitchen world . He said to no longer call the cops & that he is just upset we sent the steak back and asked for horseradish as it's not on menu. He brought out the new steak and after everything we didn't want it after all his out rage, he said he would eat it since he explained he was dealing with his ac issues prior that day. He comped our whole meal but everything we went thru just rude. Hope the customers that choose to eat here get better service and the owner chooses to be nice and understand tables problems if they have one. We will never go back to this place. We live in the kitchen world to know this was wrong & there are lots of places to dine other than this one. A night we wanted to dine & relax gone sooo wrong. read more

The husband picked this restaurant to hit up one night. It's fancy, as we waltzed in with our sweaters, jeans, and baseball hats on. Oh well... We were hungry. We first tried the appetizer of stuffed mushrooms . Soooo good! We both had the special which was sea bass with a lemon dill sauce. The piece of fish was nice and thick portioned. They didn't skimp on the fish as far as size and taste! Awesome food. A little pricey but we got what we paid for. Will be returning to try the rest of the menu! read more

My wife and I go here when we want to be pampered a bit. The service is always topnotch, as is the food. Sometimes we are feeling frugal and order from the menu, other times we splurge and order the specials. Either way, we are not disappointed. Specials usually include a variety of fresh seafood items; the scallops, salmon, and red snapper have all been good choices. Had only lived in Tyler for a few days and didn't realize it was a fine dining restaurant. Showed up in shorts and tshirt but the staff was still very welcoming! My wife and I decided to give this place a try after hearing several friends talk about it over the past few years. We had a reservation and we were seated immediately upon arrival. Our waiter was excellent...very attentive but not overbearing or patronizing. He knew the menu well and steered us perfectly on our wine selection. When our food arrived, I found my steak to be cooked exactly as I ordered it to a nice medium rare. My wife's scallops were sublime! This restaurant did not disappoint in any way! Bernard's is our favorite restaurant in Tyler. You can't go wrong here; everything is delicious. The filet forestiere is just about the best steak out there. I have visited Bernard's twice in the past year while on business. It's hard for find (in a small strip mall) but worth the effort. Everything on the menu is fresh and the wait staff is excellent. They were out of the wine we were looking for but the waiter made an excellent suggestion for an alternative which we loved. Everything on the menu is VERY reasonably priced with several appetizers around $6. The menu has something for everybody from fish to steak to pasta. I'll be back! read more

Omg! I need more than 5 stars because this place is in the stratosphere. I had chicken Florentina as recommended by my waiter, Dustin as I was looking for something light. I rarely eat bread, but the bread was amazing with the mild tapenade. The chicken was superb. There is no restaurant that compares to this experience. Please come to Austin and open one! Another outstanding meal at Bernard's. We dine here several times per year and have never had a bad experience. Tonight the bone in ribeye was outstanding as was the chicken florentina. The escargot appetizer is excellent. We were visiting Tyler for a bike race and we like to visit the local restaurants and stay away from the chains when we can this place had some good reviews so we decided to try it out. Definitely worth the visit. It's not cheap but it is worth the price. We don't visit Tyler often but will be eating here when we do. We had the Greek crab cakes as an appetizer and it was delicious. The server brought some rolls and some tapenade and it was very tasty. Wife had the Halibut (which was a special for the day) and I had a filet mignon forestiere. Made reservations for 2 at 6.45pm on Friday. It's my wife's birthday and a pilot friend in longview said this is one of their fav places. I ordered a french onion soup, wife got a salad. I sent my soup back as it was a lonely piece of bread with a sprinkling of cheese on it. I know this chef didn't go to France or study the brigade french laundry. The salad was normal nothing impressive. My soup came back with a second piece of bread and a bit more cheese, well I guess that's how they do it in Texas. I order the new York and the wife orders Australian lamb rack. Both mains came out with a dollop of mash potatoes, a single organic carrot and asparagus stork. Ho hum. The 12ounce new York was good as expected but leons and olive garden is better. My wife had 3 of her 6 lamb pieces and commented it was OK for a special. The bill came and had my 30 dollar steak and wife's 50 dollar lamb. Total bill was 150 thank goodness I got smg movie tickets for $5 each so all up dinner and a movie was 175 bucks. Will I go back. The Food was good, 7/10, the service was 7.5/10, the prices were on the high side, the decor was average. However, the condition of the chairs and the benches were terrible. The upholstry on al the seating was delapidated and torn up. We were taking our guests there for a special occasion. What an embarrassment. The owner should be ashamed of this place. Ambience is so incredible, the food is wonderful, the service is incredible and the management is attentive to any issues. I had the salmon stuffed with crab topped with bernaise sauce. My husband had, what'd you think, was a simple ravioli. Both were incredible in their own way. The escargot were dreamy. I can't say enough about it. Mr. Bernard, My lovely daughter and her husband came to visit us recently. We bragged about how wonderful your food was prepared. I had said more then once, that there were other restaurants in town that had better ambiance, however ...your food was absolutely the best. Come on Mr. Bernard...what in the world is going on at your place with the seating. I was so embarrassed at the rundown condition of your entire restaurant...but those chairs! They were in such awful condition. I was ready to bolt as soon as we all noticed THE CHAIRS. The only thing that saved your butt at this point....was the bread that had been immediately served with a delicious chopped olive dip. Our waiter was excellent, very attentive,and had an incredible memory. The barstool in front greeting area was very worn and soiled looking. MY FIRST EMBARRASSMENT ...however, words cannot describe what unfolded as we were bought to our table. I thought my husband was going to come unglued as he glanced around the room. I LITERATELY HAD TO CALM HIM DOWN! This was supposed to be a special night for us. VERY SAD INDEED! The only thing that saved the evening was the food and wine menu . Please have your chairs replaced immediately.....along with a good carpet cleaning. First off, too bad whoever added this business to Yelp couldn't spell 'Mediterranean' and I guess now no one can ever fix it. Sigh. -- The food here is 5 stars. Period. Everything was prepared perfectly. Even the bread tray was amazing. We had scallops and duck. The scallops were huge, perfectly cooked, with nice color and really great texture. How do you do that in Tyler, TX? I have no idea. The duck was perfect. Great flavor, perfect done-ness, crunchy skin. The prices are also good for such quality. So, the missing star: We made a 7:30 Saturday reservation and showed up at 7:15. The place was a madhouse. Obviously, way too many reservations had been taken for 7:00. The bar was full, the foyer was full, it was cold outside and so we ended up standing in front of the wine fridge (which is just in the wrong place). After the 7:00 rush, the restaurant emptied out, and we got a table. So, #1 - Don't take so many reservations for one time, move some to 7:30. The 7:00 rush obviously completely frazzled the staff. We were promised salads with 'homemade creamy iIalian dressing' which sounded great, but they never came, and suddenly here were the entrees. Well, of course the entrees looked amazing, and we were hungry, so we forgot the salads. #2, I would like to have tried that salad. As good as the entrees were, I can only assume it was amazing. The lights in Bernard (or is it Bernard's? Even the restaurant website has it both ways...) are low, and this is good, because if you look close, this place is shabby. The waiting chairs are frayed and coming apart. The walls need paint. If I noticed it in the dark, I can only imagine what it looks like in daytime. #3 - This place must be making money hand over fist (and deservedly). Spend a little on the building so that it is in keeping with a fine dining experience. All in all, we can't wait to come back. We'll make a later reservation, we'll wait until after salads to order entrees, and we'll try some more of these amazing dishes. Bernard, you're a new favorite. Compared to some other restaurants I've reviewed on here, you're head and shoulders above...but you cost $80 for a meal for two instead of $40, so I'd like to see the rest of the experience improved to match the food. Hello Everyone, The reviews looked fantastic for this restaurant and it looked very nice coming in. I unfortunately was not able to dine here because of the lack of care for their customers. I can only assume that they prefer for you to make an appointment prior to coming in. My wife and I had walked in with another couple walking in shortly afterwards. We could not tell who worked there. no one greeted either party as we walked into an empty front foyer that was not very roomy. Once someone that seemed to work there arrived, I had to ask if we can get a table. We were then told there would be a 10-15min wait. After about 20 minutes of waiting, I wanted to ask if the wait would be any longer but there was no one to be found( and of course we couldn't tell who worked there). A gentlemen came in (moving furniture left and right) and was nice enough to tell us that the wait would be realistically another 45min. we thanked him and took off. I DO, however, would like to mention that the food smelled delicious and the scenery seems nice. I just wasn't impressed with their customer service. On a side note, I became nit picky and noticed the cheaply spray painted drop ceiling tiles above. read more

The food is mostly a version of French cuisine. The waiter mentioned several items not on the menu. He did not include the price of each in his narration of the meal, so no one ordered any of the off menu items. A couple sounded good. I had the stuffed veal. It was very good. Food is good! Good quality, tasty! I would definitely recommend the filet with crispy onions and bearnaise sauce- seriously amazing. The waiters and waitresses are very friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is nice, quiet and romantic. The only cons would be that the restaurant can be too dark (in my opinion! I could barely see my sister across the table the last time I went) and the wine selection dwindles over the holidays. During the rest of the year, his wine selection is wonderful, but around Christmas, the restaurant is typically out of a lot of wines on the list. I would have a few selected before ordering- it can be frusterating! Otherwise, it is a great place to eat! read more

Well let me start off by saying, we did not have a reservation but it was before 7pm on Saturday so didn't think it would be a problem. They seated us at the bar. They had a couple of tables set up to the left side of the bar which means the bartender was our waiter. This was ok until they started getting busy. We bought a bottle of wine that I but frequently for about $10 but cosy us $30 at the restaurant. The bartender forgot the wine bucket do the bottle at our table. Overall the food was good but a bit overpriced. By the way the prices are much higher than what is listed on the online menu. We both ordered a special seafood entree over $30 each. read more

Having come from Spain in the last month, I was excited by the reviews of this place. Rude awakening... The best thing about this place was the wine (mind you, 250% mark up). The sauce in the fruit de mare tasted like a lovely blend of water. The pasta, I will give it that, was al dente. Bread with the mussels, really, were unidentifiable rolls". Ambience...ok.
