I came here for a group dinner with friends. The vibe is romantic, dimly lit, with candles on the table. It's perfect for a date night. The wine list is large, with many options for a glass or a bottle. We ordered the baked brie appetizer, calamari, and muscles. I thought the brie was great, but it was a little rich with the cream sauce included. I think it would've been perfect with a fruit jam (maybe fig?) to balance out the richness. The pastry puff was perfect on it. The calamari was average to me. I liked the dipping sauce, but the calamari itself tasted more like the breading than the actual calamari. I don't think I'd order it again. I loved the muscles. I've never had muscles before so I don't have anything to compare to, but thought they were great! I loved the bread that came with the table with an olive and oil dip. It was very good and I loved the olive mixture. We also all got complementary salads before receiving our entrees. I wish we knew about this because I would've asked for the dressing on the side. There was a little bit too much dressing for me and I didn't eat much of it. I ordered the fettuchini alfredo with chicken. I thought it was fantastic. It's a classic dish and they nailed it. I would order it again! The menu was large and had unique items. Ok so we came again tonight....with no other expectations than a great meal after a rough 24 hours and a soon coming trip back to Alabama. Little did we know what our dinner would turn out to be. Chef Arturo is out of his mind! I've NEVER met a chef like this...Especially one with such an amazingly balanced ego! When a chef has stayed at one restaurant for 20 years, something is going very very right!!! Tonight was no different. Chef cooked his butt off for us from start to finish with NO NOTICE! Ok....now we're spoiled and truly felt the kiss of God in his courses. We ate family style, which is good since we're family and together have some of the most seasoned palettes in the Southeast! Took my mom here for birthday lunch. First impression was that it was a nice place. However that quickly changes when I heard how loud their phone rings! It's right at the front entry and horribly loud. Heard it ringing all during our lunch. Hubby had beef stroganoff. Had zero flavor. I cook this dish and mine is served over spaetzle. My gravy and meat have flavor! Their dip is excellent, but would be better served with a slightly softer bread that has flavor. Maybe garlic toast? I had some type of chicken in pastry. What an outstanding experience! After working at the lake all day I didn't feel like cooking. We dined here several years ago and I remember that it was good so I decided to give Bernard a try last night and, boy, am I glad I did. It became apparent rather quickly that Bernard has a loyal following of regulars. I was impressed that they took care of their regulars while making me feel welcome too. As is my custom when dining alone I ate at the bar. At first I was disappointed that there is no bar TV but after falling into conversation with the folks seated around me that disappointment quickly waned. I ordered strictly off menu last night. The tomato Caprese salad was one of the best I've had in a long time. A nicely portioned order of fresh and flavorful tomatoes accompanied by fresh mozzarella and basil leaves drizzled with a balsamic dressing, the salad was absolutely delicious. My main course was an incredible rack of lamb. Chef removes the meat from the bones and crafts the bones into a crown. The dish is plated with the crown atop mashed potatoes and filled with sautéed shitake mushrooms. The madallions of lamb surround the crown. The plate is garnished with two grilled asparagus spears and a sprig of rosemary. Beautifully presented and perfectly prepared, I thoroughly enjoyed this dish. Top it all off with a few glasses of Chateau St Michelle Cabernet Sauvignon and some great conversation and call it a wonderful experience. read more

Locally owned "legend" for a couple of decades in Tyler. Still as it has always been, fine dining done well. Went for a couples anniversary dinner, reservations need to be made FYI, and had a great meal in a very relaxed but proper manner. I as always got the file, medium rare with béarnaise, crisp onions and asparagus. The filet is always cooked to perfection, the béarnaise sauce is just right. Asparagus was crunchy and fresh, the onions were excellent (of course I like fried onions your mileage may vary). The restaurant aesthetically is pleasant, it's a 90's fine dining decor. Very Mediterranean (which is exactly what it's meant to be). Clean, well managed team which are all on point with recommendations for wine and amazingly accommodating. It's not cheap, but it is reasonably priced for the quality you get, so for most folks including me, it's very much an "occasion" meal. You know what I really love about it, after 20 years I know that a locally owned and operated fine dining restaurant will deliver exactly what I expect. Kudos to Bernard and his team for an excellent meal and superior service. You'll never get what Bernard's will provide at chain restaurants. New to Tyler? This place is so so good. It is very affordable for an upscale dining experience and the staff are very friendly and attentive. I love that their bread comes with a homemade tapenade rather than butter or oil. It's so dangerous though, we went through two baskets of bread! My crab stuffed trout was excellent and my girlfriend's veal and scampi was to die for. They even added pasta to her dish for free! My husband ordered steak Pittsburgh style, which is hard because it's burnt on the outside and room temp at center, most kitchens don't have a stove that can get that hot. Perfection! The FIRST impression of your restaurant Is conspicuously dilapidated chairs that look hardly fit to touch much less put under my butt. WTF! Spend the the dough bro! We've always had a great experience at Bernards and we figured since we where early to arrive that reservation where not really necessary, we have often been early without reservations in the past. We offered to leave and call in a reservation and the hostess insisted that we could wait until an Availability was open we where sat in the bar area which was ok although we where freezing we continued to wait. We were told it would get warmer ( which it didn't) after a couple of minutes all we could smell was cigarette smoke we continued to wait thinking we would be seated else where but when the hostess came to fill the water glasses we realized that she was going to leave us there I told her that I could not do all the cigarette smoke it was to much and we would have to leave. She just said ok bye! So much for customer I would have never expected this from Bernards. read more

Bernard's is our favorite upscale restaurant in Tyler. We had a party of 18 for a birthday surprise dinner and we couldn't have been happier with the way the Bernard's staff accommodated our every request. Lilly and Christina were fabulous! They let us order from their open menu without limiting what our large group could order and they allowed us to pay separately. They let us host our party with balloons and a cake which we brought with us. The food was delicious and all our meals were served beautifully. The wine selections were perfect. We had a memorable evening and can't recommend Bernard's more highly. In our process of planning, we found that 3 other Tyler restaurants require $150-$250 nonrefundable deposits and some required minimum bills of $600 all on one ticket. Bernard's did none of that. We were able to order what we wanted and paid individually which was very convenient for our group. And to confirm that we made the best choice, Bernard's has always been the guest of honor's very favorite restaurant in Tyler. read more

Took a quick trip to East Texas to check on some family property. Drove into Tyler last night and had dinner at this fine French/ Mediterranean restaurant. The ambiance was quaint and vastly understated, Bernard's buddy needs to pick it up on recovering the chairs but the menu was excellent. My wife had the puff chicken. She rated it up with the finest chicken in a pot she had ever had. I had the veal topped with prosciutto and a fine light wine gravy. The veal was really tender, as it should be, and the prosciutto added a great accent. No salt needed! The wine list was understated also but we found a nice Spanish wine, Juan Gil Silver Label, which I had never had and it was perfect with our meal. Our waiter was understated as well ( seemed the theme of the experience) but great and overall the experience was a great surprise in this small town. Should we stay in this town again we've found "our spot"! read more

Bernard's is a favorite of friends that live in Tyler. While visiting friends, we had a chance to visit Bernard's as well. Wow was it good! She brought bread with homemade tapenade and it was amazing. Lots of garlic and made in-house daily. I could have made a meal on that! We had the fried oysters as a starter and we each chose a fish special. The Chilean sea bass was outstanding. Just delicious! My husband chose the salmon Oscar style and it was great too! Salad was great as well. Fresh. Crunchy and the homemade dressing was very good. Expected a vinaigrette-but it was creamy and really good. Disclaimer: One night has turned a great restaurant into an utter disappointment. All in all, it is as nice as you get in Tyler, but here is my story: My hubby and I were in town for Easter and to celebrate my b-day (belated) with my parents, my Mom made 7:30 reservations at Bernard's. We arrived on time and they were "setting up our table". We grabbed seats in the lounge and ten minutes later we were offered a wine list. The waiter never returned. My Dad got up to order a bottle and the bartender told him "I will get you the bottle but I can't open it." What are we suppose to do with the wine? Cuddle? At this point, it was 7:55pm, no wine and still, no table and the bartender was an ass. We were finally seated about 8pm. The hostess starts bitching about how no one was leaving or ordering and that is what caused the delay. In my opinion, it is best to just apologize and move on, not criticize other patrons. My Dad finally orders wine and they are out of the bottle. He orders a different bottle...OUT! The owner came over and was very knowledgeable about wines so we picked a wine after being told that there were at least two bottles since we planned on drinking more than one bottle of wine. The waitress told us the specials, one was peppercorn crusted ahi tuna. When it came time to order, my husband and Dad ordered the ahi tuna and were told, "oh, we just ran out. It is Saturday, so we always run out of specials." For a restaurant that has been open for several years, don't you think they would figure it out by now and order more so that they don't run out? And, also, why did she not tell us that they were running low so "get your order in if you want it"? Grrr. So, my husband and Dad ordered salad and steaks, I ordered salad and elk, and my Mom ordered minestrone and redfish. We all received salads, including my Mom. It took them five minutes to bring out my Mom's soup to replace the salad she did not order. Then, it was time for another bottle of wine. Guess what? You got it. They did not have two bottles, only one and they were out of it. We got to go through this song and dance again with the owner and he brought out an ahi tuna appetizer as apology (we thought they were out of tuna!). The entrees arrived and my Dad got his steak, I got my elk and my husband and Mom got redfish. The problem is that my husband ordered steak. He told the waitress but then said screw it, I will just eat this. At this point, it was a comedy of errors. At the end, they brought us a dessert to apologize, but we were not charmed. We did not ever get a sincere apology from the owner and he missed a great opportunity to discount our meal or offer us a % off the next meal to get us to come back. We did not really want dessert at this point so the offering of more food was kind of pointless. Putting all of these issues aside, the food was good. The salad is passable but the fish, steak, elk, tuna, and cheesecake were all delicious. We just could not get over the fact that nothing went right and we did not receive the level of service that should go with 20-30 priced entrees in Tyler, TX.
