Disclaimer: One night has turned a great restaurant into an utter disappointment. All in all, it is as nice as you get in Tyler, but here is my story: My hubby and I were in town for Easter and to celebrate my b-day (belated) with my parents, my Mom made 7:30 reservations at Bernard's. We arrived on time and they were "setting up our table". We grabbed seats in the lounge and ten minutes later we were offered a wine list. The waiter never returned. My Dad got up to order a bottle and the bartender told him "I will get you the bottle but I can't open it." What are we suppose to do with the wine? Cuddle? At this point, it was 7:55pm, no wine and still, no table and the bartender was an ass. We were finally seated about 8pm. The hostess starts bitching about how no one was leaving or ordering and that is what caused the delay. In my opinion, it is best to just apologize and move on, not criticize other patrons. My Dad finally orders wine and they are out of the bottle. He orders a different bottle...OUT! The owner came over and was very knowledgeable about wines so we picked a wine after being told that there were at least two bottles since we planned on drinking more than one bottle of wine. The waitress told us the specials, one was peppercorn crusted ahi tuna. When it came time to order, my husband and Dad ordered the ahi tuna and were told, "oh, we just ran out. It is Saturday, so we always run out of specials." For a restaurant that has been open for several years, don't you think they would figure it out by now and order more so that they don't run out? And, also, why did she not tell us that they were running low so "get your order in if you want it"? Grrr. So, my husband and Dad ordered salad and steaks, I ordered salad and elk, and my Mom ordered minestrone and redfish. We all received salads, including my Mom. It took them five minutes to bring out my Mom's soup to replace the salad she did not order. Then, it was time for another bottle of wine. Guess what? You got it. They did not have two bottles, only one and they were out of it. We got to go through this song and dance again with the owner and he brought out an ahi tuna appetizer as apology (we thought they were out of tuna!). The entrees arrived and my Dad got his steak, I got my elk and my husband and Mom got redfish. The problem is that my husband ordered steak. He told the waitress but then said screw it, I will just eat this. At this point, it was a comedy of errors. At the end, they brought us a dessert to apologize, but we were not charmed. We did not ever get a sincere apology from the owner and he missed a great opportunity to discount our meal or offer us a % off the next meal to get us to come back. We did not really want dessert at this point so the offering of more food was kind of pointless. Putting all of these issues aside, the food was good. The salad is passable but the fish, steak, elk, tuna, and cheesecake were all delicious. We just could not get over the fact that nothing went right and we did not receive the level of service that should go with 20-30 priced entrees in Tyler, TX. It will be a while before we return. read more

I made reservations to avoid waiting. I don't care how "amazing" the overpriced food is, not to mention inaccurately priced online, I should not have to wait 30 minutes for my reservation because Bernard does not know how to manage a restaurant. After finally hunting down the hostess who was avoiding the growing crowd of unseated customers, she grudgingly admitted that we had to wait another 30 minutes before any table is ready. Who knew "it'll be just a few minutes" means at least an hour wait at Bernard. We left and went to Cork to enjoy a much nicer dinner. read more

Two words, young yelpers: SEA BASS. If you don't try the Sea Bass, you really deserve a Ray Rice dirt nap punch to the face. If Bernard's is offering to accompany your entrée with Scallops; once again, trust me, and try them. As much of a foodie snob that I am, I can confidently say that Bernard's serves up some of the best Sea Bass, and Scallops you'll ever consume. Wine. Yep, they offer an extensive selection of the forbidden fruit too. Or, if you opt for a mixed concoction, you'll definitely get your $ worth, as the drinks have a bite. The service here has always been top notch as well. All in all, Bernard's, without a doubt, is my go to, for fine dining. read more

We have lived in Tyler for approximately 1 1/2 years. We have had numerous excuses to partake of the various fine dining experiences in this town. We have been extremely disappointed in everything we found. Overpriced steak houses with bland sides, etc... So when my husband made reservations here for our anniversary I didn't have a lot of hope going in, but being nine months pregnant, anything is better than cooking. We were absolutely blown away by Bernard Mediterranean. We started with the crab cake which was more lump crab seasoned and cooked atop a puff pastry than cake. It was delicious. My husband and I both had specials of the night. I had the salmon topped with lump crab in a white wine(?) sauce laid over creamy rice with asparagus. Everything was cooked to perfection. The lemon slice on the plate was unnecessary as the seafood was superb. My husband had the "surf and turf" which consisted of a filet mignon and scallops with a bearnaisse sauce, also with creamy rice and asparagus. The steak was ordered medium rare and was cooked actual medium rare. It was seasoned perfectly to be enjoyed on its own without the sauce, but with the sauce, I reached an enlightened level of spirituality. The crepe brulee at dessert was simple, classic, better than any I've had in the time we've been here. The hostess was caring and careful to point out steps and offer a hand to a very off balance pregnant patron(i.e. Me). Our server was neither absent nor hovering. He was friendly, knowledgable, and understanding of our particular situation. The atmosphere while a bit too dark was quite romantic and set the mood. I loved everything about Bernard's. The location is quiet, the atmosphere is romantic, and the food is amazing. We started off with the crab cake appetizer. It was nothing like any traditional crab cake we'd had. It was served in a puff pastry. The filling was creamy and delicious. It was covered in what they call "lobster sauce" which was very good. I had the filet mignon with bearnaise. The steak was thick and very, very tender. They cooked it medium rare as requested. It came with mashed potatoes, a thick stalk of asparagus and a bed of onion straws. The bearnaise sauce was the perfect weight, not too thick, and was a good combination of creamy and salty and was presented in a pretty pattern on the plate. My husband had the rainbow trout which was on special. The textures mixed very well with this dish, the trout was firm and crisp, the crab meat was thick and tender and the creamy sundried tomato sauce was perfect. Even the bread was great and fresh baked. The prices were reasonable. The most expensive dishes were still under $30. I loved every single thing about this place and will return every time I visit Tyler. Y'all are so lucky to have a place like this. read more

I went here with some people from work while we were in the area visiting from out of town. This place was supposed to be the best around which is why we went. I knew we were in trouble when we tried to order a bottle of wine for the table and had to ask for 3 different ones before we hit on one they had in stock. Bread basket and appetizers were not that great. Salads arraived topped with a house dressing that I would've preferred on the side but that option wasn't provided when we ordered. I got a cheese filled pasta dish with a cream sauce and bacon. I appreciated that the alfredo wasn't drenching the pasta, but the pasta tasted as good as the packaged kind from the grocery store so nothing special. We also tried dessert. Tiramasu for someone else at the table and a chocolate cake of some sort for me. The cake wasn't good and was still partially frozen so it must have come from a box. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place except if you're looking for a cozy/romantic atmosphere. read more

Wow, this place is really good. It's different in a good way. Is the chef French? A French take on Italian food? Whatever it is, it works. My salmon dish was cooked just right, moist and hot, and so flavorful. My dinner-mates each enjoyed their choices as well. The crab cake appetizer is unique: it arrived on a square puff-pastry. Very good. A nice twist. If you're entertaining guests in Tyler, you cannot go wrong here. read more

I've loved Bernard restaurant for years but had to write this review specifically for their recent "wine paired dinner". It was absolutely the best I've had and I've had the five course dinner at Emeril's in Las Vegas and eaten at two of Wolfgang Puck's restaurants and dined at Mansion on Turtle Creek in Dallas. Bernards was over the top and Sanglier Vineyards (the partner in this event) had some lovely wines. We started out with Chilean sea bass over spaghetti squash with a vanilla beurre blanc served with a Viognier wine. The fish was cooked to perfection and the spaghetti squash added a wonderful texture and both were beautifully accentuated (not covered up) by the beurre blanc. The next course was Rice Salad Nicoise with a Rose wine which was remarkably dry and full bodied. The salad was so interesting with tuna, shoepeg corn, and olives. Wonderful! Third course was Lamb tenderloin with chicken mousse wrapped in philo dough with a mint demi glaze accompanied by a spinach stuffed portolini mushroom and asparagus paired with a Pinot Noir (the best wine of the night in my opinion). Wonderful with the lamb cooked to just medium and the mushroom a delicious accompaniment. Fourth course was my favorite (or at least a tie with the Chilean sea bass) with a braised short rib provencal served with a rosemary sauce, topped with shitake mushrooms and a side of fingerling potatoes. This was absolutely the best rendering of a beef short rib I've ever had. So flavorful, rich, and tender. The wine was a very tasty Syrah, but it paled in comparison to the Pinot Noir of the previous course. The final course was a chocolate pyramid that was beautiful and delicious. It was rich yet a light accompaniment to the huge meal. Did I mention that each course was what I consider to be a full serving??? I pray Benard restaurant will have this event on a regular basis and hope to see some of the entrees from the pairing on their daily specials menu in the near future. However, their soft shell crab on angel hair pasta with lemon caper sauce is still high on my list of favorites. Bernard, you've outdone yourself with this one. read more

Absolutely delicious! We all ordered the specials--pan seared scallops, herb sea bass, and crab-stuffed trout. All were wonderful. The sauce on the stuffed mushroom was a dream. Service was excellent and we all brought home leftovers as the portions are great. Pricey, but the food is worth every penny. Best quality meal we've had in Tyler. We had a reservation and our table was ready when we arrived, even though it was a full restaurant. Will definitely be back for our next anniversary. read more

Disappointed in wine list only 1 selection by the glass for red wine, after that you have to buy the whole bottle. Both very overpriced! Had steamed muscles not the best I've had. Pretty tasteless. Had French onion soup, was ok. And a artichoke & palm salad. Pretty pedestrian, lacked any real punch. In all prices are to high for the quality of food I experienced. Went there for a dinner presentation and the food was mediocre at best. I ordered the New York strip and it tasted like it was freezer-burned. Me and a friend asked the server for bread 3 times (gave them at least 30 minutes each time to bring the bread because I know they were busy) but never got the bread. When I had mentioned to my friend that the Tuxedo cake looked like a tiramisu, the waitress practically castigated me by saying, "It's Tuxedo cake!" As far as the presentation, couldn't hear anything because it was so loud in there. They didn't have private rooms so that was understandable as the bar was right next to us, in the same meeting room. This might have been a better experience if we were paying customers rather than participants in a sponsored meeting where a private room was actually available and there weren't so many participants. But most of us were sorely disappointed and I know that they can do better. We just happened to come at a time (Thursday night) when the service and food were less than pleasant. I actually would've preferred the steak at Texas Roadhouse where it's consistently fresh and the would've much preferred the service which is consistently outstanding. read more

Was in Tyler for a visit and wife and I decided to try Bernard's. It was a Wednesday night so not really busy but I can see how reservations would be needed on busier nights. Don't be put off that it is located in a strip shopping style type location, the interior is great and parking is easy. This is a restaurant that a lot of the menu is "daily specials" which is fine (so don't expect the online menu to reflect the totality of their offerings). The one issue I have with that is the wait person reels off the 2 or 3 appetizer specials along with 5, 6, or even 7 dinner specials and your head kind of reels (what kind of sauce was that? etc.) Of course, you can keep asking your wait person questions, or ask them to repeat, but it makes me feel silly and seems like it's wasting their time also. So, PLEASE put all the specials on a simple piece of paper and insert into menus. It's nice to be able to sit and look them over. That's my only gripe. Ambience, nice, dark, cozy, quiet, romantic, candlelit. Food, everything we had was excellent and perfectly prepared (chilean sea bass, bone-in ribeye excellent). Service, excellent. Price, actually you can get out around $50 for two or, if you want, $150 or more, your choice. The less-expensive dishes we saw served all looked really good. Next time, I would love to try the rack of lamb (but I can't remember all the details of the dish, lol). read more

Their food is fresh homemade they have great specials there fish is wonderful and the atmosphere is so romantic the wait staff are wonderful especially David and the owner is always very nice. First time at Bernard's and it was fabulous! The food was absolutely amazing. I had a special- the veal shank osso bucco- and it melted in my mouth. Great wine list. The service was first rate. There are only two things I feel need addressing. Why is it you go to a restaurant with fabulous food, amazing service and the coffee to go with a delicious dessert is less than mediocre? This happens far to often. End the meal as you begin it! Also, the furnishings are very threadbare. Doesn't make a good first impression. Time to invest in new chairs or upholstery!! read more
