Our flight was cancelled so we ended up here. We had been up since 3a.m. And it was approaching 9:30 so we were starving. You would think that would mean whatever we had would taste fabulous....but the best I can say it was it was just "ok". I had the Traditional, scrambled eggs with bacon, and English muffin and home fries. Everything was cooked well, pretty bland but not terrible. My husband had the Denver Skillet, again just ok. Took forever to get our food....well over 50 minutes. The wait staff was very apologetic for the slow service. Slow service from the kitchen staff seems to be a theme with the reviews for this joint. Great spot for breakfast. The french toast was coated in Captain Crunch cereal, which sounds really weird I know, but it was delicious. It was just the right portion and it came with fresh fruit. The ambiance was delightful; very 1950s New York diner. It wasn't too expensive and the service was friendly and efficient (if a little overwhelmed). I am from the east coast, and love eating at diners. When I first walked in the atmosphere impressed me it's clean and new with a 50s feel. The service was good they were very attentive to our needs, But the food was just OK. I wasn't very impressed with what I got(the open faced turkey sandwich), and especially not for the price I paid. I've been here at least 5 times now, everytime wanting to love it. The decor and feel of the place is great. Exactly what I want in a diner. The service is fair, once they seat you. Last time we were told a table near us would be bussed in about 5 minutes, no big deal, we can wait. Ten minutes later the table wasnt touched and I had to go over to the host to ask if we could sit at any of the 3 other clean tables. Once seated they are prompt, polite, and friendly. The food. Ooof. Everytime I go I want to love it. The menu is enticing and creative, yet grounded. I have had the corned beef hash twice, both times a major let down. Boiled potatoes, near raw veg, and some decent corned beef. It's not really a hash, just ingredients thrown on a plate. A hash needs to be held together by a caramelized crust, a nice char. All the ingredients should be in one place on the plate. Onto the eggs that accompany it. The best this diner can do for a runny yoke is basted, which granted, helps; but what diner can't poach an egg???? Ridiculous. Other items like the burrito, croque madame, pancakes are lazy and lackluster at best. The only good breakfast item I've had is the french toast, which was awesome. Lunch is sad. The caprese sandwich should be light with light bread. This bread was so dense and stale it ruined the taste of the veg. One time we ordered a salad with grilled chicken, they didnt tell us they were out and brought out instead a sad plate of frozen, deep fried chicken strips cut up. No thanks. Overall, the food speaks for itself. No soul and poorly thought out. I want to love this place, but they need a big change. read more

I was walking around downtown Billings on morning when I found myself at the doors of the public library which unfortunately did not open for another 2 hours (my mistake). Loved it and the food was great. The coffee mugs are huge and we all want to take them home. Sadly the $22 price for a mug is way over the limit for me. Five stars not because it's a five star experience, but because for a "diner", it really sets the bar high. A little on the pricey side for a typical diner, but it's not a typical diner other than in decor and some menu items. I had cream of broccoli soup (some of the best I've ever had anywhere), a delicious cheeseburger with a choice of cheeses (I had havarti) and a toasted bun, and a huge helping of tator tots. I also had a Nutella milkshake, which speaks for itself. I couldn't finish everything. I'm going to be in town for awhile, so I'll definitely be checking this place out for breakfast and probably lunch again. read more

The food here is great. The customer service is lacking. We waited an hour to get our food. Our server told us she forgot to put in our order and offered us a free cup of soup. After I told her: it's not even busy in here, what is the hold up they brought us our food and said it was on them. 2 stars for comping the food. I will not be back. read more

Have eaten at Bernie's twice and enjoyed it both times. If possible the coffee cups are too large. I can't drink it all before it gets cold. By the way, that's a good thing. The menu at Bernie's is extensive. They serve breakfast all day with a full list of options. Check out the "vacationer's breakfast" - chocolate cake and a chocolate shake! Who says chocolate isn't for breakfast? The lunch menu includes a large variety of sandwiches, salads and soups. We didn't have a shake, but the blender was running constantly to fill shake requests. They must be yummy! Our waitress, Teri, was friendly and fun. My double pork panini was tender and tasty - ham and pork served on a soft bum. The Reuben was full of tender corned beef and kraut. There's parking on the street and in the parking deck next door. The restaurant is located in the historic Northern Hotel. Get there before 3 - that's closing time. read more

I was not impressed with my Bernie's Diner experience. Ordered the Northern Monte Cristo to go, when I picked up my food noticed there was no raspberry jam, which was supposed to come with the sandwich. Went back in, and was given two plastic cups that were barely filled with jam. When I got back to my hotel I noticed that the two pieces of the sandwich didn't have any powdered sugar on them. The menu states the sandwich is deep fried with powdered sugar, and raspberry jam. I decided on the soup of the day for my side, which was a chillin bean. The soup was dry and not good at all. And not what I was expecting for the additional charge of $2.00. I probably won't go back here again. Seems a little overpriced for what they offer, I have had some very good Monte Cristo sandwiches, and this one doesn't make the list. read more

SERVICE IS TERRIBLE AND FOOD IS NO GOOD I went to Bernie's with my girlfriend because Stella's, my usual go to for breakfast, was a bit busy and we were really hungry. There was no wait which was nice, but that is about the only good thing that happened. It took a very long time until we saw our server and by that time we were ready to place our food/drink orders. We each got a sandwich and my girlfriend got a coffee, when she got her coffee there was no creamer so she asked our server if she could get some. The server took about 5-10 minutes to come back with it and by then the coffee was not really that hot anymore. Our food took quite a while to arrive and in the mean time, a different girl brought us orders that were not ours three different times. We did not really mind that too much, but we were really hungry and seeing a bunch of other orders that were not ours started to frustrate us because about 25 minutes had passed until our food arrived. The food finally came and the sandwiches were not very good. The bread was stale and meats/veggies on the sandwich did not taste very good at all! The worst part of all was that after recieving our food, we did not see our server for 35 minutes! I know it was that long because I had received a text right as we got our food (has the time the text arrived in my phone). Not even to ask if we needed refill, which we did, or anything. We finally had to walk to the counter and ask to get our bill because we can not get our servers attention and she has not been to us in a while. When the girl I asked came with my receipt, she told me our server would be over to handle our bill, but thank god I had cash and just left the cash. The people next to us grabbed that girl and explained they were having the same problem getting our server and needed their receipt as well. After talking to them, turns out their food was not very good as well and clearly we had the same server. The most frustrating part of the experience was the service and quality of food! Will never go back and recommend people stay away if you want a good breakfast! There are so many other good options nearby (Stella's, McCormick's Cafe, Fieldhouse Cafe to name a few) that you should not eat at Bernie's. read more

Soooo disappointing!! Looks like it would have a cool diner atmosphere but the food and service ruin the experience. We have been here on three different occasions and it's the same scenario each time except that the food quality has deteriorated with each visit. Service is very slow, although this appears to be a management issue. Servers are working hard but understaffed. Coffee is good, that's the only positive. But I won't make a special trip there just for the coffee. Overall, not impressed. I feel like I gave it a fair chance and will not be recommending to friends. read more

I have eaten at Bernies several times. Unfortunately this will be the last. Seems like every time my wife and I eat here, they are always out of something and it takes forever to get your food. This time they were out of waffles, so I chose the chicken fried steak and eggs. The chicken fried steak was dry and suffered from a bland brown gravy, saturated with onions. My wife had the Migas. The Migas with elk was tough and terribly dry. The service was average and it's a little pricier than most places. Good luck, but we won't be back. read more

Food was delicious, from ordered to delivered to the table in about 5 minutes and our servers Justin & Lisa were on the ball- no waits for drinks, friendly to talk with and followed up to make sure all was ok. My order has been wrong over again - and frankly for the price of the food, the service should be much better.
