Their original flavor is perfect--it's light and delicious, and it's so hard to describe you have to taste for yourself. The prices are super reasonable, as they charge based on toppings not weight. You can get as many toppings as you want for a static price, which is amazing. I LOVE THEIR CHEESECAKE TOPPING. I could just eat an entire cup of that (which you can request to do!!). I'd heard over and over that BerryLine is the best froyo in Boston, so last night I finally gave it a whirl. I'm now so used to the pull-and-pay froyo shops, that it was actually a bit weird and uncomfortable to have to talk to someone about my options and preferences. Major #firstworldproblems, right? After I got over that, I asked for a sample of the strawberry banana froyo flavor, but it was a bit too tart for me. I then decided to go with the chocolate cake flavor (the other two options were snickerdoodle and original). Since I've never been a fan of original flavor, the chocolate cake froyo was still a bit tart for my liking, but the addition of the strawberries and cheesecake bit toppings was just enough sweetness to create a perfectly balanced froyo concoction. Just call me a culinary genius. The standout of this order was by far the cheesecake! You can taste the different layers (crumbly crust, creamy filling) in each bite. Apparently BL bakes the toppings themselves, and I definitely believe it. Give me the recipe? I'm intrigued by the other flavors they have throughout the year and would definitely like to venture back to create more interesting combinations (and nom on more cheesecake bits). I used to work literally across the street from this place, which was dangerously healthy (or unhealthy....Is froyo actually healthy?). Anyway, the product is good. The new flavor of the week is always interesting, like the guava frozen yogurt that I still can't quite get out of my mind and sob a little if I spend too much time thinking about how I won't have it again. The fruit is pretty much always fresh and nicely chopped up into bite-sized pieces. But the service/clientele can really suck. Snooty, preppy, loud, obnoxious, entitled, mindlessly self-involved Harvard kids frequent this place at all hours of the sunset (when school's out) and the tiny space gets jam-packed without a single Urban Outfitter-attired body willing to just move the f**k over 2 inches so you can get your order. And it doesn't help that the place is often staffed by the exact same types of people, so no "treat the customer well" treatment here unless you happen to be the dude's buddy and know what Professor Edgarton meant in last week's chem lecture. It is both surprisingly and unsurprising how much of a difference good ingredients can make. These days there are tons of options for froyo, and yet BerryLine to me is the clear winner. You wouldn't expect something as simple as froyo to vary much based on the store and yet the simple, homemade froyo and ingredients at BerryLine add up to a clear difference. The options are more limited, but each flavor and topping is special. Homemade mochi and cheesecake are highly recommended. Their chocolate froyo is amazingly silky. I am not a big frozen dessert eater, so the micro size is enough for me. Can't make up your mind? Ask for some of their generous samples. Ave., but it's a hidden jewel (kinda hidden). The texture of the yogurt is smooth and not icy or lumpy. The flavors are very clean and the fruit toppings are fresh - complements the yogurt well. When it comes to frozen yogurt in Harvard Square, my heart wants to support the local business... but my stomach forces me to side with Pinkberry. The main reasons: - They only make one flavor. Original, Nutella, Oreo, Honey-Graham, Peppermint Oreo. I've tried them all, and they all taste the exact same. Even the Peppermint Oreo, which had absolutely ZERO mint taste. So you think "how innovative", but taste "how disappointing". Granted, the exotic and stronger fruit options (Chai, Cardamom, Eggnog, Key Lime, etc) do have some resemblance of flavor distinction, but mostly because of one over-powering spice that prevents you from finishing the serving. Even my boyfriend, who usually orders the medium, couldn't finish the small Eggnog. And I just prefer non-fruity flavors. - This is also more of a personal preference, but BerryLine's yogurt is too thin. While I enjoy the tartness, the consistency is not as creamy or as smooth as Pinkberry's. - It's a bit overpriced. Then again, I suppose all of the froyo joints around here are. Some pluses: I do appreciate the Micro size and unlimited toppings option that they introduced a while back. I love Berryline. They always have good flavors (today, for example, they had honey graham and rose) and I feel good that I am supporting a local business by buying their yogurt. The yogurt is creamy and not icy like at some fro-yo places. The difference I can taste in relation to Pinkberry is that the tartness of the yogurt is more apparent. I was sad to see that their Newbury St. location had closed, but it seemed like pretty stiff competition from the Pinkberry that was across the street. Very fair pricing for available size options. I like how the toppings and fro yo machine are not out in the general public area, no self service option. More sanitary this way. BerryLine has a great plain tart flavor! That is my go to at any non-self serve yogurt place. I usually go for Pink Berry because there's more of them around me and I was really sad when the Berry Line closed on Newbury right when I moved here! Lucky for me, I rekindled the Berryline fire this past week and remembered how delicious the plain tart is. (I hope all is forgiven.. and you'll take me back) I also like that the shop has a local feel with written menus and the little nook it occupies on a small street. I usually get fruit toppings on plain tart- strawberries and blackberries are my favorite. Their fruit is pretty fresh. But they also have different kinds of chocolate, brownies, granola, mochi, etc. 1 topping is one price, and multi toppings are another price. My favorite froyo place in Boston! I came here all the time when I went to college in Cambridge, and now that I've moved away, I really miss this place. I love how tart the original flavor is, and the seasonal flavors are always awesome as well. If you like the more sweet/ice cream-like types of froyo, this probably isn't for you. Unlike Pinkberry, there's different price tiers for 1 topping vs multiple toppings. The inside is pretty tiny and there can be long lines on summer nights. I really liked the mochi; it seems like they make it in house. It was chewy and not too sweet and complemented the froyo well. One thing to watch out for is that this place is fairly small though, so there might not be seating available. Luckily for us, a couple of people were leaving once we got our froyo. Oh fill me with your sweet peanut buttery goodness. Yes, Peanut Butter FroYo... and its flavor was unexpected. Traces of peanut butter, yet still sweet as frozen yogurt should be. It was almost PB & Jish. The service was good, and the ambience was excellent. Nifty pictures adorn the walls, including a giant poster bearing FroYo Nutritional information. Almost transparent blue counters, super clean coffee station, and white walls reassure you that this establishment takes pride in keeping clean. The only downfall is the FroYo flavor selection. Three flavors to choose from: Orignal, PB, and Tamarind (which I'm pretty sure is monkey-flavored). But, despite the lack of choices, you are able to jazz up that cup with a gadzillion different toppings. Banana Frozen Yogart? Pilled with mounds of fresh strawberries, mango and kiwii? Oy! Writing this review makes me wish I had another Berry Line sitting next to me! Generally I don't like to compare places to big chains, but I think the Pinkberry reference just has to be made here. So why do I think Berry Line is better? 1. Its local, Matt the owner is uber nice and a fellow Yelper 2. The flavors change!! At all times they have original plus two rotating flavors!! I stopped in for Banana and Blueberry and KNOW I have to go back within the week before Banana is gone! But then every time I visit its a new flavor adventure :) 3. FRESH FRUIT, like really fresh and sweet! Visiting LA all the time I have had my share of this stuff, and this is the freshest fruit I have come across! Plus, that cute mural on the outside wall gets me every time! The fun little Pineapple and Kiwi hanging out together as all the chocolate chips dance around them, I LOVE it! I started from Brookline (home base), then Porter Sq for lunch, then Union Sq to check out its festival, then to Inman Sq for some Christina's Ice cream...but before continuing, I thought about ice cream places that I haven't check out yet and BerryLine came up (yes, I know it's yogurt)! So it's off to Central Sq to catch the red line for the BerryLine at Harvard Sq! I almost missed this place too because of its tucked away locale off between Mass Ave and Arrow St (you're walking south from Hahvarhd Sq). The cartoonish exterior and interior makes it welcoming and makes you expect Spongebob to greet you inside (no, I wasn't traumatized as a child). There are nice small tables and chairs for you to sit in inside, as well free WiFi to get some reading done or write more Yelp reviews. Their choices are either original or flavor of the week (cranberry was this week, but others had mango, pomegranate, black cherry, and papaya) and your choices of toppings are fruit, chocolate or pb chips, granola, etc. The small was just enough for me,but they come in medium and large as well. I got the mango and pb chips on original yogurt and it was delish! The price (around $3) is awesome compared to competitions in LA (i.e. Pinkberry, Red Mango) and it tastes just as good, if not better! And fellow Yelper/owner Matt W is an equally awesome guy, putting his MIT education to run this place here. He says that he and his partner (Eric) are really enjoying this after doing this for about a month and are thinking of baked goods in the near future to complement their coffees. The only way I will be able to remedy my indecision in the face of so many options will be to go back here eighty thousand times. I love love love this place. The staff is super friendly and understanding of my inability to choose toppings. All the fruit looked so fresh (it is - they will only offer it if it's ripe and recently sliced) and the other toppings so yummy (cocoa puffs, fruity pebbles, granola, oh my!) Have you ever seen a fro-yo place that had two flavors you wanted twisted on two separate machines? Did that make you cry a little on the inside? (It's okay if you admit it, it's happened to me.) Not only will they give you two flavors off two separate machines...but if you want...they'll put your toppings at the bottom of the cup instead of on top. We even joked about them offering Grapenuts as a topping, but on stipulation that they would have to be added mid-swirl so as to prevent tooth chipping. Each flavor is amazing. I personally didn't go for the side by side because I needed the pomegranate (yes! pomegranate fro-yo) in my life and didn't want to pass up the original flavor. I topped mine off with strawberries and chocolate chips. I couldn't have been happier. (although I've already conjured up about 5 more combos I need to try)It took me about 30 minutes to make up my mind. The guys that run the shop are amazing.
