Located on N. 16th St. in Council Bluffs, Berthas has been here a while, and has a dedicated following with the locals. The steak bite appetizer with horseradish dip was amazing (probably should've stopped there), really good pork tenderloin, and a super flaky fish and chips, rounded out a great meal and definitely left us thinking we should've worn looser pants! Dedicated parking makes for easy access, although peak hours right after work, things can get tight. Bertha's has a classic dive bar feel from both the outside and inside. In the midwest this also means the staff are quick and super friendly! On top of that, I was really impressed with how good the food was here. There aren't too many local food options in CB, so finding a place that does quality pizza and a good price was very exciting. We came here for Thursday night football, and overall had a great experience. I will remember this place when I want to watch a game in a chill spot or order some local pizza for take out. I've driven past this place a hundred times and always wondered how the food was. Well, last week my friend suggested it so I met him and another friend here for dinner and drinks. The menu has a little bit of everything so everyone will find something to eat. We all split some fried gizzards, which were really good. You could tell that they were fried fresh and not sitting out for a while. They don't have a lot of seating, which I noticed in some other reviews. So if you know it's a busy kind of night, get there early. The one waitress seemed to be covering the entire floor, and she was new, so service was slow. But after we put in out drink orders, the drinks came out really fast; as well as our food. They had live music, which was cool, but it was so dang loud. If they turned it down a couple notches, it would have been a lot better. But I'm the 'quieter bar' type of person. I ordered the chicken sandwich, Bertha style, with tots. Everything was really good. I wish they gave me a few more tots though as that portion seemed a tad small compared to my friends'. As in my buddy Todd J's review, (he was one of my friends that I went with), our friends' tenderloin sandwich came out extremely raw. It was really dark so we didn't even notice until he mentioned it was chewy, and I got my phone out to shed some.......light.......on the situation, (Nailed it). The manager was pretty upset that food like that was sent out, was extremely apologetic and covered his meal and drinks and said when (if) he came in next, that he's covering his first round. The manager definitely made up for the pretty bad food mishap. All in all, my experience was good. I can't speak for one of my buddies, but my food was really good. I'd definitely go back and taste some of their other jewels on the menu. read more

Went here Fri afternoon. Lots of cars but taken up by two tables. Great. Served promptly by Marlin who said "Be patient. I ain't used to this (hand held POS)." We said, "No problem". The way I figure, nobody forced us to go out on a Fri afternoon and be here, so I got plenty of time. Sue ordered Classic Cheeseburger w/Macaroni Salad side. Said it was GREAT. Well, the burger, anyway. Salad...soso. I ordered Jalapeno burger, which was also GREAT. Had an open grill taste which I loved. Came with sauce on the side which really made it hot. Delish. Side of Cole Slaw, again...soso. A bummer, tho, no more Hamm's beer on tap. A couple years ago, we stopped in and was surprised they had it on tap. No more. Had Busch Lite instead. NO, not really. It was just after midnight and i was watching a TV show and they were talking about the best pizza in NYC. That was all it took. I whipped out my phone, opened Yelp and started looking for pizza options near me, open late. A couple places popped up, but I'd been to them before. I wanted something new. Bertha's Bar & Grill? Never been there. Not really a fan of Dive bars. But the Yelp reviews were pretty great. I'm down for that. I used the mapping directions in Yelp and they took me right there. Easy. I walked in. Not really sure what to expect. It's a dive bar, across the street from a strip joint, in CB. But I'm open to culinary adventure. I got the House Special pizza and a Zip Line Copper Alt to enjoy while the pizza cooked. Um, damn delicious beer, on tap. Highly recommended. Timing was perfect. Just as I finished the beer, the pizza came out. I started home with it. It smelled so good, I had to stop for a piece. It's square cut, for easy sharing with friends. Or a quick and easy bite in the car. And so delicious! Great crust! Excellent toppings and plenty of em. No skimping. All in all, probably...no, easily the best late night pizza I've had. read more

Atmosphere - Nothing special, just a bar. Just a few tables to sit at, and some space at the bar. Food Drink - Brickway's Coffee Vanilla Stout. Dinner - Pizza as that is what I was craving. They have one size for their pizzas, 14 inches. I selected my standard topping, pepperoni. Party cut was a surprise on this cheesy pizza. Clearly the pizza is popular as a steady flow of people picking up pizzas to go. Service - Simple and effective. Love Bertha's! Great food and local bar atmosphere. I've been many times. Excellent pork tenderloin sandwich, burgers, pizza and wings. We almost always get the Bertha's Signature House pizza. The Enchilada Supreme pizza is pretty good as well. They also have good wings. I really like the dry rub wings in either Southwest Ranch or Chipotle BBQ and my husband likes the traditional buffalo sauce. The food here is consistently great. It's a favorite local bar and grill we enjoy going to. read more

Growing up in Council Bluffs I had never been to this place. Recently a coworker recommended it and I am so glad she did. The drinks are reasonable and the food is amazing. The chicken friend chicken sandwich, gizzards, fried pickles and a couple other things we tried were incredible. A buddy of mine had his tenderloin come out completely raw which kind of put a damper on our dinner but the manager was super gracious and as pissed as we were and made it right but covering my friends meal and drinks. The waitress was the nicest lady but pretty new and still figuring things out. After talking to some friends who are regulars it sounds like there aren't some new staff which explains some of the hang ups but overall this place is a cool establishment with great food. I'll definitely give it another shot. read more

I went here with a friend to see a performer he likes. The place is so much smaller than I.expected; however, we had a table and the service was wonderful. I had a burger and fries and they were delicious. My friend hit the all meat pizza, they were out if Canadian bacon, but she need more if one other meat out a but if a discount. It was good pizza. The fact that it only comes in one size was disappointing, but left-over pizza is always good. Great food and friendly service. We stopped here on a road trip with two grouchy kids. They were very accommodating. The pizza was excellent. The crust was crispy without being too thin. The very first time I visited will be a memorable experience. An unassuming building that has had an interesting career to say the least. From old truck stop to a locale that serves pretty darn good pizza. Had family over for early holiday celebration and pizza was the call. Berthas didn't disappoint at all. One Bertha's House special and one Veggie. These absolutely hit the spot! Pickup was just a short wait, enough time for a quick beer at the bar while waiting. No crowd at all, not noisy and entertaining conversation. This very well could be the place to duck out and just hang out while the rest of the world is in the Holiday frenzy. The bartender was great in that he was very accommodating and helpful. However, I ordered the Mushroom, Swiss burger and was very disappointed in that the gal overcooked the hamburger as it was well done and dry. I could not find but a couple of mushrooms.
