I wanted so much to like Home Team Cookout because we are over at the AMC in Council Bluffs pretty often and always looking for a nice place to eat. Unfortunately, Home Team Cookout will not be a place we'll be adding to the list. We first visited Home Team Cookout when they had just newly opened, and things were very odd (they had a salad bar from taking over from the Ruby Tuesday days). They didn't have buns for the hotdog my husband ordered and my Mac and Cheese was runny and gross. We decided to try them again recently to see if the opening day jitters had passed and they had things a little more in order after being open a while. It definitely was more "lived in" and had a homey atmosphere, like a corner bar type vibe. Our server was great and checked on us multiple times throughout the meal, so no complaints there. I ordered the meatloaf with a side of Mac and Cheese. The Mac and Cheese was still a little runny, but better than our first visit. The issue with it though was that it arrived with a hair right on top. I didn't even notice, but luckily my husband did before I took a bite. (There was also a hair inside the laminated menu, so I just am a little skeeved out entirely now about going back). My husband got the Oversize Tenderloin Sandwich, and that was actually pretty tasty. Crispy tenderloin, lots of mayo, and plenty of pickles. He shared with me after I was sort of picking at my meal after the hair debacle. I'm giving Home Team Cookout in Council Bluffs a full five stars. We called at 7:30 to ask if they could accommodate a group of 30-40 people, including our very energetic teenage soccer team, and they told us to come on in. They absolutely delivered. The service felt like something from a different era -- genuinely outstanding. Two gentlemen handled our entire group with patience, kindness, and efficiency. Our players are wonderful kids, but they are not quiet, and the staff treated them with nothing but respect and good humor. The food was fresh, flavorful, and came out far faster than we expected for a group our size. Everything tasted great. They even stayed open late to make sure our team was taken care of. Reading these other reviews I'm lost. Almost like we didn't go to the same place. The food was really good & our waitress was so sweet and great. Their homemade ranch was amazing with the fresh greens from their salad. The Mac n cheese was so creamy and flavorful. Their chicken fried chicken/ chicken strips had well seasoned flavor and the gravy was perfect. Others in my group were very satisfied with their meatloaf plates. One ticket with one persons food was lost which delayed the delivery of one plate however they quickly corrected the mistake. Take your chances and try this place for yourself. He was happy with Lagunitas IPA being available. I chose the fish dinner - a hand breaded walleye fried with sides. I selected a baked potato and watermelon. We've dined in, taken it to-go, and every time, it delivers. Stepping inside (don't be shy--pull that door hard; it's got some resistance), we were greeted with a warm welcome and guided to our seats near the front door. It is a prime spot for people-watching but also a prime spot for catching every gust of cold air from incoming guests. It's fine, really--I've accepted my fate as a human draft blocker. Determined to switch things up, I studied the menu with great intent... and promptly ordered my usual. Some things aren't worth overthinking. Drinks arrived quickly: Diet Coke with lemon for me (no Coke Zero, but I persevered) and iced tea for my husband--though the ice had already melted, requiring reinforcements. No harm, no foul. Food-wise, we stuck with our favorites: mango habanero bone-in wings and the oversized tenderloin with fries. Pro tip: Ask for your wings extra to keep that crisp skin intact under the sauce. The service was more than amazing! We called from their parking lot 15 minutes before close to see if they would still serve us as we didn't want to be "those" people. The treated us as if we were important guests that they had been waiting for Our party of 4 tried a variety of things from the menu. I had the regular sized pork cutlet sandwich and it was very good. My husband had the meatloaf which he loved but the gravy was a little heavy for him. The food was good overall. Nothing was outstanding but all was satisfying. We loved everything about this restaurant! The service was friendly. Lots of younger employees; the ones we interacted with were kind and paid attention to detail. We found the restaurant to be very child-friendly. They gave our daughter a stuffed animal when they saw us wandering while waiting for our food and brought us a high chair before we even asked. And when we found this place on Google, the reviews and photos didn't just say "good food"--they whispered "welcome home." So we skipped past a dozen other high-rated spots and drove straight here and guess what? It felt like we walked into a family reunion we didn't know we were invited to. Shoutout to our bartender with the yellow glasses--pure hospitality gold. She recommended the meatloaf and pork chops like it was sacred knowledge passed down through generations. She wasn't wrong. By the end, we almost asked her to roll us out the door and tape a napkin to our chest that read: "We move when our full bellies say it's safe." The meatloaf? Massive. Delicious. I went with the ketchup gravy over brown--because as an American kid raised on ketchup (we used it like a fifth food group), it hit straight in the childhood. Mom would be proud. The mashed potatoes? We have been here several times lately and there is a good reason. A great big well lit parking lot, a welcoming front of the house, comfy seating, Great service and even better food. The tables are clean and the bathrooms are too. The tenderloin, the tenderloin is gigantic. It is so big that it comes with an extra bun. It is well seasoned and comes with all the fixin's. The onion, pickles, lettuce and tomato tasted fresh to me. Every dish here is a huge portion. They don't slack on portions. The fries are some of the best around. There are several TV's for your viewing pleasure and there is plenty of room to spread out. The menu seems to be evolving daily and the additions are spot on. The new Footlong loose meet sandwich is a really good idea. I highly suggest it. The beer situation is my only hang up, I wish there were more options for the bottled and on tap choices. I really had a higher expectation than what we received. There is a notice on the menu that they use a local meat store, which only sells local meat not frozen. It was 'ok' as a chopped steak, but was definitely not a high end meat. We both found the amount of gravy was excessive. When I first saw it first impression was ...."what are they trying to hide?' It was good both meals. I would certainly return, but only for a cheap meal for food, not a great experience of ambiance and food. Service was VERY good when we want, So I consider that big plus. It is a bit off the 'beaten path', which I would consider both a positive and negative. I would recommend they find some way of advertising in any brochure being used at the convention center. I've been wanting to visit this place since they opened last year and I finally went a couple days ago, on a Saturday, with my daughter and my niece. It's a sports bar restaurant so there are a lot of TV's everywhere to ensure that you can watch your game pretty much wherever you sit; if you fancy that. We walked in, were greeted and were sat pretty much right away. Our waitress was super nice, (I don't remember her name, sorry!). We ordered and in little time, received our food. I ordered the chicken fried chicken, (i don't remember their name for it) with mashed potatoes as my side and one trip to the salad bar as my other side. The salad bar is pretty large with a lot of options for fixins and other salad-y stuff. The chicken was crispy, moist and pretty great. The mashed potatoes were good as well. But the gravy....it seemed to have the right texture but was so bland; it just didn't taste like anything. No pepper or barely any salt. That was a tad disappointing. My daughter and niece both ordered the kids meal - Mac n' Cheese and applesauce. (My daughter actually wanted coleslaw but I told the waitress wrong. But the waitress was super nice and accommodating and brought out some coleslaw after the fact, which I strongly appreciated.) The Mac n' cheese was really good and for $5, they received a great portion; not too much but just enough. The kids meals included their main, a side, and a kids drink. It was a great value. With looking over the menu, their prices aren't bad at all. I'm really looking forward to going back and trying one of their burgers or a different dinner meal. This was by our hotel and they also had the pamphlet in our room as well so we decided to try it after a 7 hour drive to Omaha. Our server was on the ball and immediately got our order. He did a good job of making sure we were taken care of and let us know if anything was 86'd. The place definitely is a sports bar. If they put as much work into the interior they should do so to the exterior. Food was good! Burgers were juicy and absolutely melt in your mouth worthy and the alcoholic malt my husband got was divine! My main issue was pricing. Was a bit too much for what we got. We were waiting for a movie, was tired of the food at Quaker Steak, and so we came here due to the above-average reviews. The first thing noticed was how quiet the hostess was. This is a sports-themed restaurant so it's going to be louder given the TVs and people trying to be heard over the TVs; that didn't stop her from talking in a normal conversational voice. The waiter arrived promptly (and, unfortunately, also didn't speak above the room volume) and was very attentive, serving drinks and the food swiftly. Nothing seemed unreasonably priced on the menu. My wife ordered the sirloin steak and I got the half-rack of ribs. One bite and my wife saw the steak was too underdone - it got sent back and cooked to satisfaction. My ribs were done, but there was nothing impressive about them - kind of similar to what you'd pick up to go from the supermarket. My side dishes were waffle fries and baked beans, the latter of which were just reheated from a can. All in all, neither of us found the food that interesting. There was nothing "wow" about the food, ambiance, or service (other than promptness). My hot beef sandwich was covered in a delicious brown gravy. Had mashed potatoes and corn for my sides. I was very satisfied with my meal. I drove across Omaha to try out Home Team Cookout. Sadly, I was disappointed. First of all, the place was freezing cold! several tables around mine was also complaining about that. The Onion rings were "ok" but were NOT what had been pictured on their facebook site as handbreaded. I was hungry to try out the pork tenderloin, did not pick "the huge one". Ended up having to reorder it as the first one that came out was waaaay over cooked, where it literally cooked the flavor out of it and it was really tough and hard. The second one they brought out was a bit better, but not by much at all. The curly fries were good and hot. I literally only ate 1/4 of my whole meal as I truly was not enjoying it, left nearly all of the sandwich. No manager came to my table to discuss, but just charged me for the entire bill. My first experience at this place was not great - it was right when they opened. I got food to go and ended up paying for something I didn't get - called and was told the manager would call me the following day - never did and when I followed up on it, they had no idea of what I was talking about and didn't appear to want to fix it.
