I lost an earring that my mother had given me and while I thought creating a duplicate to have a proper pair again was the best idea, she recommended turning the earring I still had into a ring. It turned out gorgeous and more importantly sturdy as I wear it daily and have had no issues. BERT'S JEWELERS ARE THIEVES. I brought in a sentimental diamond pendant necklace that I was going to pass down to my daughter and bought a sterling silver chain from there to put it on. When the chain didn't go thru the loop, Bert's said it would take a day or two to mount the pendant on the chain. Admittedly I didn't pick up the necklace right after he had called, but knew I would get there eventually to pick it up. When I went in a couple of months later I was told the necklace must be in the safe and had to wait for Doug to pull it out. When I went back to ask for the necklace he said "it was my tough luck, I had left it there too long, and don't know what happened to it". I did find out by the woman I had spoken to the day before, that he SOLD my necklace. When I asked him again why he did it (and he had no right) he yelled at me "get out of my store". I'm sad that I lost a sentimental keepsake, but more importantly he STOLE my necklace and sold it for money--unacceptable practice for any business. Perhaps I would have felt better if he apologized, but he was rude and arrogant! WARNING EVERYONE to not do business with Bert's Jewelers. read more

A staple in the NW DC / Chevy Chase community. Great service and a rare true family business. I only visit when I need repairs done but every time that I have, it's been a pleasurable experience. As for the comment below mine regarding left repairs, I just dropped my necklace off for a repair myself. On the repair slip it does state "Not responsible if left for more than 60 days." It seems unfair to expect a business to be held liable for something you've left for an extended period of time. If the piece is that precious, be more responsible and pick it up in a timely manner. Surely a friend or family member could pick it up for you. I remember leaving a jacket at a dry cleaner for much longer than I intended. It was no longer available when I came back many weeks later. Why would I bash the business for my own irresponsibility? read more

My brand new designer watch was damaged in October - I set it down on the counter next the sink, and whether water somehow loosened the crystal or something knocked it, I later found the crystal and metal ring around it sitting on their own. The crystal was in one piece, which led me to think (and comment to several people in my house and friends who were visiting) that it was a piece from one of my kid's science toys that had been left lying around. I threw both parts away, which was my fault. However, when I dropped off the watch at Bert's, the dark blue watch face was still in perfect condition, since the crystal had come off in one piece. Dropped off my watch to see if the crystal could be replaced and they said they'd get back to me. A few days later, they called to say that the replacement would be over $100, and to ask if I was ok with the charges. I said yes, because I've left items at this jeweler before and they've always been very professional. Around the end of October, I got a call saying my watch was ready. I went in to pick it up, and to my dismay, saw that there were what looked like scratches on the dark blue face of the watch. I showed them to the lady at Bert's, who said they were probably there when I dropped them off. I said that there absolutely were no scratches on the face when I dropped off the watch. I was willing to pay a high price for the crystal replacement, but not for damage that wasn't there in the first place. She said she wasn't going to argue with me but would send back to the watchmaker and let me know. Over a week passed, and no word from Bert's. I called during the week of Nov. 5, and the same lady answered. She said abruptly that she'd passed the watch to her watchmaker and they'd get back to me. Another two weeks passed, and I called on Nov 20. This time, a gentleman picked up and told me that the watchmaker said that the scratches had been on the watch face when it came in. I repeated what I'd told them previously, that the crystal had come off, but that there had been no damage to the dark blue face. I was quite taken aback when the gentleman at Bert's got instantly defensive/offensive, saying that he was now "in the middle" between me and his watchmaker, that it was my "word against his," and that he was doing me the favor of repairing the watch face at no cost. Whereas I had spoken very calmly throughout, he accused me of being "angry and frustrated." I pointed out that I hadn't received a call back from them to discuss my watch being sent away for several MORE weeks to fix the watch face. Instead of acknowledging that they should have communicated better with me, he repeated that they hadn't done anything wrong, continuously interrupting me to tell me I was wrong and imply that I was lying about having scratched my own watch face before dropping it off. I reminded him that I had authorized a hefty repair fee for the crystal, so it didn't make sense that I didn't ask for watch face repair at the same time if the face was scratched. At this point, I was incredulous that he was trying so hard to establish that I was at fault, against all logic. The gentleman grew even more combative, saying that he was sending my watch for further repairs without charge to me (as it should be), but complaining that I was forcing him to admit liability. I pointed out that I was doing no such thing, but in this case where there was a legitimate question in his mind about whether or not his watchmaker had damaged my watch, it was in his own best business interest to fully repair the watch for a repeat local customer (as I was). He then told me that "I don't want you calling in a few weeks asking for your watch back when I'm sending it off for repairs at my own cost." Now I WAS angry. Excuse me - you haven't communicated with me about my very expensive watch, and you '"don't want me calling" to ask about it? I initially asked him to go ahead and send the watch face for repairs, but called back after a few minutes, when I considered how incredibly rude and offensive they had been. I didn't want them touching my watch any further after putting in the hands of a repair person who had further damaged it. And yes, I can affirm that there was no damage to the face when I dropped it off. I picked it up a few days later (they'd "left it with the watch maker"). The watch is significantly changed; to add to the scratches on the dark blue face, the crystal they put on it protrudes terribly. The gentleman at the shop when I picked it up was the same one I'd spoken to on the phone; he said the scratches were "barely there" (they shouldn't be there at all), and then asked if he could "discount the price" a bit to "make me feel better about it." I said no. I wanted to pay and be done with them. Money was never the point - no discount will make me "feel better" about the horrible service. Clearly Bert's doesn't want any more customers, so I won't waste my time/jewelry there again. read more

I have been to Berts many times for ring resizing, jewelry purchasing repairing and cleaning. They did a wonderful job repairing my grandmother's engagement ring. They are very reasonably priced and have always given me a straight opinion regarding what is possible and not possible in terms of cleaning or resizing. read more

I like to patronize small, family-owned businesses in the neighborhood and have tried Bert's Jewelers several times. I often write-off bad customer service at places like this because i know the stress that small businesspeople could be under. But, this past weekend i asked for a watch band to be changed. When i picked it up two hours later, I asked for the accessories i had left with the watch and the woman who owned the store accused me of lying, saying i never gave her anything else. When i insisted i had handed it to her and asked her to double-check, she responded with a raised voice, accusations and insults. I'll never go back there again. read more

I dropped a pearl bracelet off at Bert's Jewelers to be restrung in October, 2015. Someone from the store called me in November, to let me know that it was ready. It was a busy time for our family, and I explained to the store, we were traveling so that my husband could have brain surgery. The person on the phone could not have been nicer, told me that I shouldn't worry about a thing, and assured me that the store would hold on to my jewelry as long as we needed. I was grateful for the understanding and patience. I had no reason to believe that either the store or I needed to pick up the bracelet urgently; in fact the store had indicated that "Please take your time! We have folks who leave stuff here for years!" This summer -- admittedly 8 months after I brought the bracelet in -- I dropped by to pick up the bracelet. Doug looked through a drawer, and coolly stated that the store no longer had the bracelet. He announced that he didn't know where it was, that he might have sold it for parts, or that he might have sold the bracelet to another customer. He was unapologetic and matter of fact, although I was stunned, and appalled. Doug said that another store might have it, but he wouldn't tell me where that store was, or give me any contact information to call. He said that I could wait a few days and call to see if they'd found it, and told me that "it couldn't have been that important to you, if you left it here for 8 months." I was so surprised that I couldn't think of what to say. I just stood there, dumbfounded, trying to collect my thoughts, and I teared up, embarrassingly, out of frustration and anger. While I was trying to figure out what to do, my mother called my cell phone, and I excused myself to another part of the store to take the call. I described what had just happened, and I told my mom, "I don't know what to do, exactly. I'm just standing here in the store, crying." At that point, Doug bellowed, "I DON'T SEE ANY TEARS!" He continued to yell and interrupt my conversation, absurdly suggesting that I should let him speak to my mother on the phone, and eventually screaming that "NO ONE'S HUSBAND IS IN THE HOSPITAL FOR EIGHT MONTHS," and finally exploding that if I was going to "spin this story, I could just get out of the store." I did. Thankfully, someone from the store called to say that they'd found the bracelet, and, noted that Doug was, in their words, "a jerk." When I stopped by to pick up the bracelet, the bill charged $25 for restringing and a $50 "storage fee." Katarina explained that the storage fee was necessary because it was a burden to the store to make sure that it hadn't been stolen and to retrieve it (from wherever it was.) When I declined to pay that fee -- both because I had relied on the store's assurance that I could leave it there as long as I needed, and because it's a jewelry repair shop's job to make sure that it's items aren't stolen -- Katarina angrily noted that I had not fulfilled my obligations and responsibilities. I fully admit that I left a bracelet at Bert's Jewelers from October, 2015 until August, 2016. I did so in reliance on the store's assurances that I could do so without ramification, and that the store would keep it, safely, for as long as I needed. Even if I was wrong to do so, leaving jewelry in a jewelry repair shop is no reason for the abuse I sustained at the store's hand. There was no reason to yell at me, no reason to question my motives or my husband's health, no reason to attempt to yell at my mother or to ask me to leave the store, and certainly: no reason to charge me twice the price of the work in order retrieve my item. Throughout the transaction, I remained calm and respectful. I wish I could say the same for Bert's Jewelers. read more

I just had a watch battery replaced, an earring fixed and new backings to another pair of earrings done. I have 2 more pieces in the shop for repairs and look forward to the same high quality of work. Service by the woman in the shop was professional and friendly. She gave me estimates for prices on repairs and also warned that a glass front of the watch might suffer more damages during the battery replacement since it was cracked. Fortunately, the battery was replaced without a problem. I appreciated the warning, though. I highly recommend Bert's for jewelry repair. read more

I had an excellent experience at Bert's. They replaced a battery in my watch. When it continued to lose time, they gave me another battery for no charge. When the watch continued to behave erratically they gave me a "loaner watch" to wear while doing an estimate. The called me as soon as they had the results of the estimate. I approved the charge and they called me again when my watch was ready. Excellent customer service. read more

They don't seem to take pride in their work. It's not very well done. I'd say borderline sloppy. They nicked my bracelet and I had to send it back to buff the nick out. The guys behind the counter are gruff and often rude. I was accused of wanting "perfection" when I complained about the nick. read more
