I normally get gel manicures which often last the full two weeks that they should. The salon is clean. It is usually pretty empty on weeknights (Monday- Thursday). Fridays and weekends there is always a wait. My only issue with this place, is that I wish the massages were better! It took a long time coming, but I found my nail salon! After a bad experience with my former nail tech (check my Yelp reviews) in which I felt like my money/business was not appreciated, coming here was a complete 360! My nails were a mess, and I didn't have the time or energy to commute to Manhattan to find a specialized salon. I'd been to Bess twice before and had always liked the service, so I scheduled a super last minute appointment -- the person on the phone was super friendly and told me to come on over. I was running about ten minutes late -- Charlene (the owner) looked at me in awe and said, "it's been a while!" The last time I had been was early in the summer (this meetup was right before Christmas) so I was awed that she remembered me. I sat down for a few minutes when her assistant asked me what I wanted. I told her either bio gel or nexgen powder -- she replied that she recommended Nexgen since if I wanted Bio Gel I would have to wait over an hour. I was in no rush so I thought I that was super considerate. What happened next could have been a disaster at another salon -- but Charlene handled it with class: I was seated with another nail tech, but I could sense she was in a rush. She started drilling/filing my nails before I had even chosen my colors. She was going so fast that I felt that I was seeing my nails done on fast forward. The nail tech was also holding my finger with a lot of pressure that she actually slightly bruised me. I realized that there was a gentleman waiting for his pedicure (he had come with his girlfriend and she was already having her pedi) and that's why she was rushing. She actually finished buffing my nails and ran off to prepare the gentleman's pedicure. I wouldn't have minded waiting -- I knew I has asked for a last minute accomdation. Charlene came to finish putting the finishing touches on my manicure (the girl hadn't even put top coat or put lotion -- she just buffed and ran off) and I told her that I could tell the other tech was rushing. Charlene PERSONALLY APOLOGIZED and said she felt terrible that I had felt unconfortable. She explained that another appointment had come in late and therefore there was a time crunch among the techs. I was so touched by the response. I wasn't upset with the nail tech -- I just felt that she was going too fast/was in a rush to accomdate everyone, and I felt guilty as a client. Charlene was super kind about it and one can tell that she values ALL her clients. As I was finishing up, a longtime client asked if she could take an Essie polish on her vacation and return it next week. Charlene was A-OK with it. I also had realized I had forgotten to bring cash for tip (I was waiting to get a massage -- wanted to indulge and I was happy with Charlene's services) and Charlene said I could head over to the bank -- I asked if I should leave something for security -- she said I could take my bag and phone -- I would never walk out without paying of course, but the fact that she had faith and loyality in me as a customer meant a lot. When I first started getting my nails done here, the girls would do a great job. Lately, it's been really bad. They rush through your nails like they have somewhere to be. I get it! I'll preface this by saying I wish I could give a 3.5 instead of a 3. So I'm new in the neighborhood and am on the hunt for a steady nail place and went to my trusty Yelp for suggestions. The reviews of this salon were pretty mixed but I found they were right on the money. I understand what the other reviewers say about the staff here being rude. While no one was particularly rude to me, they weren't overtly friendly or nice. It was pretty silent in there almost the entire time I was there. Not a deal breaker by any means, but a little off putting none the less. That being said, I thought Kiki did a good job on my manicure and pedicure. She filed a nice shape and pushed my cuticles back well. When I asked her to make some nails shorter or even out some edges she did so with no problem. Unfortunately the actual polish application was a bit sloppy and too thick for my liking. It actually bubbled while I was still at the salon. Definitely a bummer. The price point is great ($26 for a no frills added mani/pedi) and the salon is very clean, pleasant, and bright. They definitely have a large clientel if the crowd is any indication. I got there 15 minutes after the opened and every pedicure chair was already full. I was lucky enough to be taken right away but next time, I'll make a reservation for sure. My wife went to Bess Salon and Spa today for a gel manicure and regular pedicure. She has been a loyal customer their for 3 years. While receiving the pedicure she was cut pretty severely on her left heal with a razor. (Not sure if razor was even sterile ) Blood everywhere and continuing to drip in the foot tub for the next hour while Charlene (Manager and owner) paid no attention to her, spoke to the others in their language and walked out the door ! What kind of business owner treats its customers like that !?? In pain she walked home and her foot is blue and numb.. No way to run a business or care for a loyal customer. She had the employees take payment for the butchering and allowed my wife to hobble home. Tomorrow I will ask for a full refund. If it is not refunded I We will be considering a law suit.. I came here as recommended by my friend and because the prices were reasonable. The first time I went, the woman who did my nails was very rough with my hands (cut my finger and bled, got too close for comfort under the nail bed with the nail tools, etc). The way she applied gel polish was like nothing I have ever seen before -- she painted 3 nails, then had me put my hand in UV while she did 3 nails of the other hand, then finished up the first hand and back to the second -- a total of 4 times in the UV light for each coating. Last, she filed my nails after she had polished them (wtf) and extensively, not just 'oops I missed a rough spot' which we know happens sometimes. Overall, I'm not confident she knew what she was doing and some of the actions she took seemed a bit unnecessary. I went a second time to give them another shot, thinking to judge a salon based on one technician wasn't fair. I went for a gel mani and regular pedicure. When we started with the pedicure I told her EXPLICITLY to not touch my big toes (they are slightly ingrown and are extremely painful to the touch). The first thing she does is start hacking away at my big toe-- to which I said "stop.. stop. STOP. WHAT THE F*** STOP!!" And literally had to pull my foot away from her. I didn't intend to curse but she heard my protest and did not comply..!? Then, got the gel mani and it didn't even last a week before chipping. I got one silk wrap for a broken nail, and it had started to lift 6 days after application. Hope this long winded, though candid, post helps make your decision. Came here with a groupon. My lady was very meticulous my polish lasted 2 whole days!! I made sure to air dry since I read about the UV stuff. Will not come here again. I don't know what went wrong the people are great but why did my polish come off in 2 days? I use Essie at home and it normally lasts me 5 days while OPI lasts me 7-8 days. Makes no sense. I can't imagine that the technician who worked on my mani/pedi went to cosmetology school. She filed some nails fine and then a couple at a weird point. She managed to cut the cuticle of my big toe as well, drawing blood. Despite her roughness when using the pumice, I still ended up with dry skin on my feet. The same dry skin I was trying to get rid of when I walked in. Overall the work was rushed, rough, painful (big toe), and sloppy (a couple of fingers have polish bumps where smudges I accidentally made were poorly corrected). I come here every week. I love the options for the pedicures... I always get the lemon spa; which includes a 15 min foot/ leg massage. Gasp* I'm a sucker for massages. All the ladies are pretty quick & friendly. Downstairs they have a private room for massages. It's like a little spa but for cheap (compared to other places) they do everything from deep tissue to hot rocks. Amazing!!! If you don't want to go down stairs than no worries, there's massages chairs upstairs. Perfect when your waiting for your nails to dry. My fiancé and I come here all the time. So I've waiting sometime before writing a review to see if anything that I read from the other reviewers with bad experiences was something I would encounter here. As you can see from the rating I gave them I have nothing but really good experiences at this nail salon. It's exactly the type of salon I had been hoping for in my new neighborhood. I am not originally from queens so since moving here I've been having a hard time trying to find a place I would feel comfortable at with the quality in service I enjoy from a salon. I have had different girls do my weekly pedicure and manicures even the owner. I will honestly tell you that from all the many places I have gotten manicures and pedicures and not just different boroughs but states I've lived in this place is amongst the best in quality. They really are detailed and focused on the job they are doing, you can really tell the owner takes charge and is about customer care. She's extremely attentive of how her employees are working or interacting with customers to ensure there is no miscommunication and that the customer is satisfied. I have observed on many occasions how she is very attentive to her staff and their work being done as well as to the customers. I find they are all friendly and very polite. They don't rush jobs to take another customer from what I have observed. The manicures are always perfect and last me the week or more. The polish they use are good I usually stick with OPI but have used other ones they have without a problem. The nail technicians are very detailed to the cuticles n shaping of nails and they are respectful of your time. I personally have never observed any talking amongst themselves of customers because they are too busy working. The place is very clean and the air quality is very good for a salon. I noticed they have a very expensive air filter in the salon which is a plus that they care enough to invest in one so expensive and huge. They are a bit pricey I would agree but the quality of the work, products, services and the environment are worth the extra few dollars. I've personally never had a long wait and I never make appointments. It's never crowded where you can't get serviced in time. The hours are great open super late which surprised me but it's so good no to have to rush to get there. They take credit cards but tip needs to be cash like in most salons. There was one time when the owner even got up to apologize to me for a wait that was only 6 minutes which I thought was very considerate. They have a special on pedi n mani Monday thru Thursday of 20% off service. They do give shoulder massage while you dry as well. Unfortunately, I too experienced the SAME problems that were mentioned in previous reviews. I went in for a pedi and a gel mani. I honestly have no complaints about the pedi; however, the gel mani absolutely ruined my entire experience. While the owner was preparing to do my nails, two more customers came in and asked her services. She told them they wouldn't have to wait too long. Next thing I knew, she is rushing through my manicure. To my horror she begins using the cuticle cutter on my fingers by rapidly chomping and pulling at the skin. Since she was in such a hurry she MADE FOUR OF MY FINGERS BLEED! FOUR! I understand if she cuts a finger by accident, but FOUR?! Seriously?! She just looked at me and said "oops, sorry" and continued cutting away the cuticles as she had previously been doing. Not only that, but the gel mani does not even look very well done. I thought I was going to get a great mani & pedi for a decent price, but now I'm walking around with gross scabs on my cuticles because she left me with bleeding fingers. So I've been feeding nexgen powder nails done for about a year now on my natural nails. I normally go to another salon in walking distance of this one. I won't name them because they do decent work and have a thriving customer base. But I've never had a stellar experience there my nails are always not bad. So the regular tech at the other salon had a tight schedule this week as did I so I couldn't get an appointment but I needed my nails done desperately. So I google and Bess has good reviews so I decided to try it out. The best accident ever let me tell you. These Nexgen nails are amazing. The best set I've ever gotten, they are super smoothly polished and look great. The lemon spa pedicure was so refreshing and both nail techs took their time. Service was great, we had to wait a little bit but immediately they were very accommodating. The waiting area was full so they brought a me chair. Then took us to wait in the pedicure chairs to have a massage while we wait. I got a spa pedicure the lavender one, wasn't much different from a regular pedicure which is $19 and the lavender was $40. How ever the 20 minute massage that accompanies the lavender pedicure was beyond amazing, and was well worth the price difference. I almost fell asleep and caught myself moaning. So relaxing and soothing, my feet are praising her skilled hands. I get a pretty basic manicure with buff so no polish for me, but when done properly it appears as if you do have polish on. So I really wanted to give this place a try as they are one of the only 3 nail salons in the entire city that does nexgen nails. I had gotten them done before and absolutely loved them so I thought, hey why not try this place that's closer to home?. Big mistake. I'd read all the horrid reviews for this place but still, for SOME reason, decided to try it any way. Again, BIG MISTAKE. First, the owner? MONEY HUNGRY and hasty. She did a rush job on my nexgen nails and they literally have NO shape to them what so ever. They are large and clunky looking globs on my finger nails. Then after asking her to shape them she said they didn't need to. Wha... Forget it. Then she cut my cuticles so deep that they peeled like bananas the very next day. Literally large pieces of skin coming down my fingers. Then to the money hungry part. She finishes my nails and gives me the total she quoted in the beginning then adds an extra $5 on to it. I boldly asked her, what the extra $5 is for and she says "oh it's the taxes, the government wants you to pay taxes". I said "ma'am, $5 is not 8.875% of that total ma'am". I'm surprised no one mentioned yet- the nail dryer... They only offer a UV light drying unit. No air. The excellent Yelp reviews and the clean and organized appearance of this nail salon convinced me to stop in and give it a shot. Result: Score! First things first. If you want unsanitzed tools, scuzzy surfaces, peeling paint, and uncomfortable chairs don't come here. However, if you prefer a clean, well-maintained, organized and friendly establishment you've come to the right place. That said, I admit all of these great things mean nothing if the nail technicians have the steady hand of a crackhead. Thankfully, that is not an issue here. My Gelish u/v manicure is gorgeous and strong! The shoulder massage while the gel was setting was the divine icing on the cake. I sincerely could not ask for more...convenient, clean, quality work, and friendly. On top of all of these positives, the prices for their many services are competitive and fair. The worst nail service ever !!!!!!!! As so many other reviews have mentioned, the service is rushed ! The technician rushed through the entire process and the owner is very rude and demanding. Please don't waste your time and money. I don't understand how they are still in business. To top it off they lie about their prices. I called and was told pedi was $15 and reg gel mani was $25. When I go to pay the pedi and mani came out to $43 ? Where do the extra $3 come from ?? I'm still in disbelief on how they speed through the entire service. This is not okay. Charlene the owner is very nice. This is one of the few places in the area that offer bio-gel. I used to go to Japanese salons in the city but now that I don't work near the city I started looking for salons in Queens closer to home. So glad that I found this place. If you're familiar with the area, you already know the area is difficult to park which sucks. I always call ahead for an appointment and so far I've found availability to be decent. Bio gel lasts longer than regular gel and it doesn't chip but it is more expensive ($45). I did do a pedicure here before but I will be sticking to my regular pedicure place. They also offer powder nails which I will most likely try in the future. I will be back! read more
