My husband, in laws and I stopped here for some food on the way out of town, and it was so disappointing. I also don't know why it says they're closed today because they certainly were open when we went about ten minutes or so ago. I asked my SIL to get me a banh mi thit nuong and when she came back out with it, it was seriously lacking in meat. They also put the veggies on the side for some reason. As I was biting into the banh mi, I was getting mouthfuls of just bread. Also, what little meat there was in there was very bland. I ordered five of the pork sandwiches and one Asian chicken salad do not order the chicken salad. They just chopped the lettuce and they give you a tiny bit of pork that's like grilled teriyaki and then put like three mandarin oranges on top and then give you a tiny bit of salad dressing on the side. It was horrible. Don't order that but the sandwich amazing as always so I can't give this a zero review but I can only tell you do not order the salad. read more

First Bahn Mi for me and it was pretty good and very reasonably priced. I got the #1 house special. No line when I went, so super quick and in and out in a couple of minutes. The bread is that super crispy crust that breaks when you bite into it with the nice fluffy inside. (A bit messy to eat with the crumbs). A nice taste and while I'd like a bit more meat, it was all balanced equally. For me personally, I'd skip the little bit of cilantro as it's not my favorite. This location is smaller than their flagship location on SE Powell, but taste is the same. The line usually reaches the door, but they are very efficient. Sandwiches and drinks are a decent value, the steamed buns maybe a touch expensive. Bread is warm, fresh and toasty. The Vietnamese style pulled pork banh mi was good, I'm looking forward to working the speciality sandwich menu. All three bao versions were also good, the veggie was better than expected. The only thing that might be a problem is how much smaller it is (there is very little seating), since PSU tends to get a lot of traffic. I really like getting the grilled chicken or dac biet (special - ham, pate, pork roll). You can also purchase just the baguette bread. A bag of 5 is ~$4. Great for dipping into chili on cold and rainy Portland days, or for making your own sandwiches at home. How can such a simple sandwich be so good? At this point I've probably had just about every sandwich on the menu. I tend to stick with the same three most of the time now. The three are: #1 Dac Biet, #5 grilled beef, #4 grilled pork. The #1 Dac Biet is the quintessential banh mi, you can find it at any banh mi shop in town, but rarely will you find it for $4.25. Although the price has climbed in the past few years, it is still a steal, especially considering it is in a new building, on the PSU campus, in downtown. The #1, since it is mostly made of processed foods, keeps and reheats the best. If I am getting a sandwich for later, which I will most likely need to reheat, this is the one I get with the veggies on the outside. If I am getting a sandwich to eat on the spot, it will either be the grilled beef or the grilled pork. You can't go wrong with either, and due to the marinade, they have a fairly similar flavor profile. One sandwich is never really enough, two is a little too much. So your best bet is to get three sandwiches, that way you can eat 1.5 now and 1.5 later for another meal. read more

First off, this place OOZES value. A huge sandwich, plenty for a hearty lunch, will run you about $5. Another $2 will get you a BBQ Ham Bao. pretty much all the food here is a great price, and the drinks, while not as crazy affordable, won't break the bank. However, the cost-saving cuts both ways, as the dingy, tight interior and subpar service gives the whole place a rather dirty feel. Further, while you get $8 of bun and veggies in your fiverr sandwich, you are still left with just a buck of meat. That is to say, the portions of meat are SKIM-PY. Still, I've come here several times, and will continue to do so in the future, and for anyone looking for a quick grab and go lunch in the area, especially students, I'll recommend it. read more

I'm not sure if it's the location of this place but I was highly disappointed because I had been to another location with the same expectations.. this one is located by PSU, a smaller building. The interior was pretty dirty, reminded me of a gas station.. food on the floors - I didn't want to look in the back of the little shop but I did. They had the cilantro just in a huge pile on what looked like a sink, just kinda hanging over the area. I was hesitant on ordering anything but myself and coworker had walked all the way over from our work building and I was afraid I wouldn't have had time to go somewhere else and wait for food. So I ended up getting the BBQ Pork Banh Mi.. well it turned out to be a carrot sandwich and about 3 strips of meat. It was only $4.50 so I wasn't that upset, I kinda got what I paid for in a sense. The cilantro was fresh and the bread was good. Together the sandwich wasn't that bad for the cost, after I scraped out most of the carrots of course. I also got chicken salad rolls and those weren't that bad. Chicken was bland and the peanut sauce was more hoisin than peanut but it wasn't terrible. So I've only had Best Baguette twice and the first time I tried the special (i believe it's number 1) which wasn't too great. I recently went again last week to give it another chance and was very happy with my order this time! I got the grilled pork sandwich which was under 5 dollars which is a steal for a sandwich that's as long as your forearm. I wasn't expecting a lot of meat, but there was plenty and the pork was flavorful and had that charred, lemongrass-y sweet flavor that you find at vietnamese restaurants. Plenty of veggies and cilantro as well! The bread is awesome and I think is what makes this place so popular. Crispy on the outside, chewy, soft and airy on the inside.. delicious and filling but never leaves you feeling too heavy and like you just carb-loaded. For a cheap, fast lunch around the PSU campus, I'd say this place is great! Only downside is there's only a few spots to sit inside but it's connected to the business building at PSU so you could sit at the tables/stairs in there but they're usually all full during lunch time anyway. I ended up eating here primarily because I was disappointed to find that Cuon and Lu Lac DID NOT have a Banh Mi Dac Biet on their menu, which came as a surprise to me because that's the most authentic banh mi you can get. I was pleased to find Best Baguette had it and I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty it was and how it reminded me of home. I also like that the prices are reasonable for the working class. I feel bad for giving 3 stars to a Vietnamese owned business, but I have to be honest. This location can't compare to the one on 82nd. They don't serve the vegetables on the side, skimp out on the meat so it's mostly bread and veggies, and the banh mi is barely warm. Teas are so-so. Overall, not terrible -go for the grilled beef, grilled pork, or the special (my favorite) sandwiches- but only go if you only want to grab a quick snack. Prices are high for what you get. Don't be fooled by the cheapness, I would rather spend a couple more bucks for something filling from a food cart -at least I'd be getting my money's worth.
