So this place finally reopened. I came by at 9 o'clock in the morning to check it out. First of all major points for being able to just get a normal burrito at 9 o'clock in the morning! I don't know why more places don't open early. Not everybody likes to eat breakfast food! Second, I thought my burrito was absolutely delicious. Ingredients were all very fresh. I had essentially a super veggie. It was enormous. I've attached photos for reference. Service was perfectly friendly. There are quite a few tables and places to sit. They have a couple of high chairs too. It is a little sterile looking in there, which at least gives the impression of being fairly clean, but it's kind of depressing. They should put some decorations on the walls to make it more festive. So I'm dinging them a star on the ambience. Then again it is a taqueria attached to a gas station so I shouldn't be expecting Chez Panisse I guess. I wouldn't say it's cheap, but nothing is these days. Not great, not terrible. I ordered the 3 amigos burrito, and it was average. The shrimp was pretty good, but the chicken and carnitas were just kinda bland, slow cooked meat. Nothing much for spices. Chopped iceberg lettuce in the burrito. Size of the burrito was substantial but $18 was a bit expensive. Service was quick. Restaurant was empty during lunch. I know you can add as many salsas or sauces as you want on your burrito/bowl, but for some reason, the DoorDash app only lets you pick two. So I called the restaurant and asked if they could add their cilantro lime salsa onto my bowl. The woman on the phone was super rude right from the start. I explained that the doordash app was wrong, and she even admitted they don't control it. If she knows the app is wrong, she should've just added the extra salsa like I asked. Instead, she argued with me, got an attitude, and then hung up on me.... over a simple request I canceled my order right after that. If you can speak to your customers like that and hang up on their faces, I'd be scared what you'd do to my food. T H E F O O D : Like most taquerias, walk right in up to the counter pick your burrito, and they load up that giant tortilla as you watch. I ordered their shrimp and carne asada burrito, and they were not shy at all about loading it up! The large-ish shrimp is pan fried right up on the spot and tasted awesome inside the burrito. The rest of the burrito itself was alright but maybe it's because of too much stuff inside. Carne Asada inside was ok, nothing to write home about. I tried the surf and turf burrito because it looked interesting, and I was surprised it was decent! Their asada is pretty yummy and so is their shrimp, so it seems like they're using fresh ingredients! I probably wouldn't order the surf and turf again though because I think I prefer them separately. Also, because the burrito doesn't include beans, and I know proteins are expensive, it kind of felt like I was eating a rice burrito with some shrimp and meat. So if you do want to try this one, I recommend adding beans for $.50 for a more balanced carb burrito with beans and rice. I once saw a picture of someone's burrito from here and was so jealous I bookmarked it but then didn't try it out until this week. I got two tacos, the California burrito, and BCB fries. Getting everything on the burrito and fries included guac, whereas everything in the taco did not - guac is extra since it isn't factored into the price for those. Since the food is made to order in front of you the service is really quick. I was a little confused when they asked if I wanted rice and beans in my taco (which was $3.95 by the way). No because that's an abomination and also the tortillas for the tacos are already so small there's no way to make it all fit and still get enough meat. So I got carnitas tacos and asked for salsa, cheese, and a little bit of sour cream. A little bit of sour cream ended up being two huge dollops that I had to scoop off later. Really it's my bad for wanting sour cream in my tacos. For the fries, same thing - but I do have a picture of those for reference. Next time I'll skip any sour cream. The burrito had al pastor, the tacos were carnitas, and the fries had carne asada. All three were well prepared and flavorful. They're medium-pricey for tacos and burritos. Eventually I just gave the leftovers to my boyfriend to eat with his leftover 1/4th to have the perfect amount for his next meal. On the plus side, the burritos are made to order. They toast up the tortilla and then they cook/saute the refrigerated ingredients together on a frying pan (steak was precooked and refrigerated). First impressions were good upon walking in. It's clean and the menu is easy to understand. You walk up to the counter, you order the type of food you want... bowl, burrito, quesadilla, nachos, etc. Then you order your protein, of which there are many. I'm a vegetarian so I went with the veggie. Then you run down the line and tell them what to add. They loaded my bowl with plenty of rice, beans, veggies, guacamole, and salsa. It's a lot like the system at Chipotle, but it doesn't taste the same at all. My son ordered the breakfast burrito with bacon. He said it was the best he has ever eaten. My other son ordered a carnitas bowl and loved it. I got the veggie bowl and I liked it. I found the black beans to be a little bland but when I added all the hot salsa and guacamole, they added plenty of flavor. My husband also got the veggie bowl and he absolutely loved it. Stopped by for some nachos before going to the AMC theater in Emeryville. Best coast burritos is located in the gas station. There is plenty of parking outside the restaurant. When we came in, the restaurant was only occupied by a couple of other customers. There were many pickup orders that were processed while we were there. As for food, we split the vegetarian nachos. They have nacho sauce if you're interested in that. The nacho platter was huge and enough to satisfy two of us. The taste could be improved by adding some seasoning. The salsa Verde was good but not the best and the spicy salsa had a smoky flavor. Overall food was ok, but they do provide large portion sizes. Also, free drink with check-in. read more

Quality of the food has dropped since I first visited this place a few years ago, maybe the Covid lockdown made them a bit rusty. All I know is I used to consider their California burrito as the best in east bay, but on my last visit on 8/21 I was a little disappointed with what I saw. Don't get me wrong the California burrito was still decent, but when I saw the meat it all looked like it had been sitting in the vat all day and then they just put it in my burrito without heating it up or grilling it again. I think places like chipotle and Panda Express can get away with this type of food prep because they have higher turnover and so they're making new batches of food every hour or so. But here it really looked like they made one big batch of carne asada in the morning and then left it all in the vat. I have no idea if this is the case, I'm just saying this is what it looked like. One thing I do know is what freshly cooked carne asada looks like and this wasn't it. The tortilla prep wasn't as great as I remembered either, they warmed it up and put all of the ingredients in it, which is basically how all Americanized burritos are made. But a real California burrito, especially in so cal, will have a little bit of crunch to it, either from the tortilla or French fries. Again the burrito I had was still decent, but I remember this place being a lot better and I would always bring my international or out of town friends here for some good Mexican food.
