After reading the reviews, I went out of my way to try these donuts because they were rated so highly. Unfortunately, they were a huge disappointment. I've never thrown away donuts before, but after just two bites of each one, I threw both away. They were simply too dense and heavy for me to enjoy. Honestly, it felt like I had a brick sitting in my stomach. I ordered a chocolate round and a maple bar, but the order was mixed up and I received a chocolate bar instead. The mix-up wasn't a big deal, but it didn't help the overall experience. The biggest issue was the texture. I prefer donuts that are light, airy, soft, and fresh. These were the exact opposite--very dense, thick, and bread-like. The maple topping actually had a nice flavor with a subtle honey-like sweetness, and it was probably the best part of the donut. Unfortunately, the dough itself was so heavy that the topping couldn't make up for it. Taste is subjective, and clearly many people enjoy this style of donut based on the ratings. Having been a longtime fan of Donut Wheel, I thought I'd venture out and try Best Donuts after reading that both were listed in The Mercury News' readers' list of best donut shops in the Bay Area. At 10AM on a Saturday, the line was out the door with 5 people waiting to get inside. The line moved quickly, despite there just being one lady working. She was friendly and chatted with everyone as she boxed up their orders. I was disappointed. My faith in Donut Wheel has not been shaken. Even my mom (whose delicate Asian palate enjoys her desserts "not too sweet") found the Best Donuts lacked flavor and sweetness. This is based on the basic raised glazed donuts and holes. My first thought upon popping a donut hole in my mouth was "these are like slightly better versions of Safeway donuts." Texture-wise, I really enjoyed the sprinkle cake donuts. I thought there were too many sprinkles and a lackluster glaze flavor, but the donut itself was fluffy and not overly dense. Btw, love their boxes. They hold a half dozen nicely and are a step up from the standard flimsy white or pink bakery boxes. Even though it was very early in the morning, the donuts were all cold. I would've expected early Sunday morning donuts to be still warm and fresh feeling and fresh tasting, which these were not. the price I guess is probably OK like $1.50 a doughnut, but that does seem kind of overpriced, but I'm not used to buying donuts very often so that might be a fair price nowadays. These two folks who run it are the hardest working couple I know. I'm always greeted with a smile and thanked for my business. I have been getting treats from Best Donuts for many years now. The ownership may change, but the yumminess stays the same. However, today, I got in a little late and Mom and Dad's favorite donuts were gone. Not wanting to go back empty handed, I picked up a few croissants. OMFG!! These croissants are so buttery and soft, with layers and layers of goodness! (I microwaved mine for 20 seconds, just to warm it up). I immediately called them to say that I was coming back in for more. As I told her that I wanted her to save 4 more, she informed me that they also have ones stuffed with Ham & Cheese!! I am disappointed to say they have incorrect hours listed here on Yelp. They close every day at 2pm now. I enjoy coming here and have been for several years. The lady is very friendly and always asks about my family. They have all the regular donuts and my family especially loves the old fashioned and crumb donuts along with the donut holes.
