I was going away for a week and needed a good place to watch my dog. I researched a few places and they were all so bleak and just plain sad. Best Friends was my last stop and should have been my first and only stop! From the moment we went in, everyone was so friendly. The facility is so nice. Your dog gets an indoor and outdoor room, access to a pool, plenty of playtime and even a social experience with the other dogs (we opted not to do that). We added on some grooming and even then the price was awesome. Very reasonable. The first night was free as a new customer too! While Cookie was there, we received photos and updates on how she was doing, and whenever my mom (the doting dog grandma, haha) would call up they would give her a status and you just knew they weren't lying - they really interacted with Cookie. I recently boarded my dog at Best Friends Wakefield and witnessed concerning behavior on the pet cams. The cameras were looping until I complained, and when they were finally restored, I recorded an attendant acting aggressively toward the dogs. The manager dismissed my concerns when I called. I have video evidence and have reported this to Animal Control. After learning that others have seen similar incidents and even the local news reported on a dog unexpectedly passing away at this facility, I started a group so pet parents can come together, share evidence, and take action. We are very dissatisfied with the service provided by Best Friends in Wakefield, MA. Previously we had seven years of successfully boarding our dog, an eight-pound Min Pin, without incident. We only learned of the complete change over in management and staff on our most recent visit when dropping him off. There had been no previous communication from Best Friends on the changes. We received a phone call on the second day of our vacation telling us that our dog would be isolated for all future visits because of his "bad behavior of attempting to hump other dogs". This had never been an issue previously. Prior to this last visit, our pet was always well-liked and cared for and never had any issues interacting with other pets. Apparently, the new management and new boarding rules are for their convenience and not that of our pet. We will not bring our dog there again and strongly caution all potential clients to reconsider boarding with them. read more

I had brought my two dogs here and had some concerns and worries about one of my dogs. she listened to me, reassured me and alleviated me of my worry. she told me she would observe and watch my dog to make sure he was socializing and happy in doggy day camp. I also asked if both of my dogs could share a suite and she assured me they would. I left there feeling so much better. one hour later she called me, and told me that Billy was doing great, having fun and was so happy. I have to say I wasn't expecting a call, I know they are busy, but she took the time to call me and again alleviate my worries. Lexi is amazing. she really cares about our fur babies. the staff is wonderful. this place is outstanding since she has taken over. I will continue to take my two pups here. they have so much fun and look forward to it. read more

I just had a terrible experience at Best Friends Pet Hotel Wakefield. We had been taking our dog to Best Friends over the past few years with no issue; whenever we picked up our dog from boarding we would ask if there were any issues and nary a peep. Fast forward to this weekend. I get a call from a manager that our dog had bitten a staff member. Obviously, that is horrible. However, the manager also mentioned this was the "final time" as there had been previous incidents. We had never been aware of any previous incidents of our dog biting anyone or being aggressive with staff. I asked for clarification and mentioned that we had never, ever been informed of any issues or incidents, and would have appreciated a heads up so we could work on behavior, etc. The manager seemed taken aback and said it was news to her we weren't told anything and she was "filling in." She claimed she would "look into" us never receiving information, and I never heard back. At worst, our dog showed a behavior issue that we had a right to know about. At "best", our dog didn't do anything but be the subject of piss-poor management and communication skills (if they even had the right dog?!) the lack of management and communication alone was enough to convince us to never recommend Best Friends to anyone again. Unfortunately, if the local news is to be believed, the standard of care has severely declined in the last months. read more

What a disappointing experience. I toured here (my pet did not stay based on the tour alone). There is an extremely strong smell of urine upon entering the building (even in the lobby, before you get to the pet area). Not to mention the layer of grime, hair, and dust covering the floors and collected in the corners. I've lived with dogs, hamsters, rabbits, etc. my entire life and I have never visited or seen such a dirty/smelly boarding facility. I've seen shelters/pounds cleaner than this place. The "small pet area" is not an area at all. They are kept in the same room as the cats (who are caged in individual metal enclosures similar to the Petsmart adoption centers). The small pets (i.e., rabbits/bunnies, guinea pigs, etc.) are not provided with any supplies (no caged area, no water bowls, no blankets/beds, no toys). You are supposed to bring everything for your pet, including a cage that fits on the counter in the cat room for them to stay in..... In case you didn't catch that, yes, the small pets are left in their cage on the COUNTER in the cat room. This may be fine for a guinea pig or hamster, but no way can a bunny be comfortable in a tiny cage for the duration of their stay. Rabbits should be kept in an area where they can hop and play :( Additionally, I was offered a "bunny bath" if I decided to keep my rabbit here. Baths are extremely dangerous for them and should be avoided at all costs; they can get hypothermia or tranced/shocked simply from being in the water. Between the dirty conditions, the lack of area, and the bath suggestion, there's no way I would leave my pet here. After visiting, it makes sense why there are limited photos online. Also, their staff REALLY needs to read up on rabbit care if they are going to continue advertising small pet boarding. I'm extremely disappointed and sad for any pets who have to stay here. I wish I could have voiced my concerns to the manager while I was there, but she was unavailable... and to be very honest, the smell of this place was making me so nauseous that I couldn't wait to leave. read more

I had a terrible experience this past weekend after a few years of sending my fur baby here. There were two days where they were supposed to open at 7am, but no one was there until 7:30ish each day. Then there was the issue of my dog not being on the camera in group play even though I requested her to be with the group. I emailed them the second day checking in and seeing if she could play with the group as requested and they ignored that email. Then finally I picked up her today and the opener was late (this was the second time) so I had to leave and come back on my lunch break. I got my dog and when we got home I realized she had a pretty bad limp. She can't put any weight on her front paw. I'm heartbroken and so upset they never mentioned anything about her injury. After all this I did some research and found a recent Channel 7 News video about how a dog passed away last July and how no one from Best Friends reached out to the owners. It was bizarre, and I guess there have been two other deaths at other locations. I highly recommend watching that video. read more

We boarded our dog and cat over the Christmas holiday recently. My dog loved play time, but upon pick up I was told there was no food left over after sending her with a 12 pound bag for 5 days. Her food is expensive and knowing my dogs eating habits, this was an adequate amount to send her with. Though this was not the event that made me uneasy about leaving them, but rather accumulation of interactions and events it sure did not increase my trust with them. What upsets us the most is that we've boarded our cat there twice now, and each time she has come home severely attention deprived. Is she being locked for days in a cage with no interaction or play? When we tried to call them repeatedly to ask, no one would answer. I even paid for a picture for an update, the picture was what I expected if someone just opened the cage and snapped a quick picture. We do not trust leaving our animals here anymore after these events and unfriendly interactions we've had with staff. Paying almost $450 for questionable care is unacceptable. read more

The staff were very friendly, and kind. They have a free drop off "interview day" for your dog to see if it's a good match. Unfortunately, the reason I might not enroll him is because when I picked him up he SMELLED SO BAD. He was soaking wet too. I have a xl dog so I'm used to him playing at the parks drooling being messy, but that smell was like a chicken slaughter house rotten meat and animal feces smell. I had to take him to get groomed the next day, and unfortunately if he goes back for a few days every week, I can't afford to groom him every other day. On the plus side, he was so tired when he came home, ate all his food and fell right asleep. I'm sure he had fun but that smell, concerns me of the sanitation standards :/ read more

I had a my dog stay here a few times and became increasingly more concerned about the care he was given each time he went. My dog was skittish and refusing to go into his crate which he usually loves after the last time I picked him up. Probably because I don't believe the dogs are ever let out of their crate even though the website and staff leads you to believe they are. The most recent time I called prior to drop off to confirm that with overnight boarding group play the dogs get 4 hours of playtime. When I dropped him off I confirmed what time the dogs would be playing so I could check the live feed cameras to see the dogs. The first day there was never any dogs on any of the three cameras. I called to asked when I could expect to see them on camera and I was put on hold and hung up on. Called again and I was told the dogs were being switched between two different rooms and one had a camera and one didn't and to call back later. When I called back I was told that they would send me a picture of my dog playing and I never received the picture. The next day there was a towel covering the camera to the indoor play area. The dishonesty over the phone in addition to never witnessing the dogs on camera even though I was told the dogs are let out of their crates to play was enough for me to never return. I do not trust that the animals are being taken care of in this facility and would not recommend anyone to trust them with their pet. read more

When I brought them Tuesday and the woman let me know that they would be in kennels I explicitly said please put them in a kennel together because my one year old needs play time I was told that's no problem. My one year old goes to another ACTUAL DAYCARE WHERE HE PLAYS WITH DOGS AND PEOPLE he wears a fi collar so I can track him and his steps... when he's at his real daycare he runs and jumps between 30,000 - 40,000 steps and comes home tired and happy. When I picked him up from Best Friends his collar said he'd moved 4,300 steps and was whining... I had to let him play with some friends to help his little head, he had a horrible night pacing and stressed. If you don't care if your dog is actually playing and active and are just looking for a kennel it's fine but it's not daycare it's just an alternative to a crate read more

I would give ZERO if I could. I KNEW something had to have been wrong when I didn't see my dog ONCE on any of the three cameras the entire 7 days he was there. I basically stalked those feeds. Never saw him. I called multiple times to check in on him and I was assured he was settled in nicely. A couple days went by and still hadn't seen him so I called to ask if there was a set schedule for small dogs (although there is a Camera for the small dog area and when I looked at it there were several oversized dogs in there and no small dogs. I then would check the outdoor camera and there were no dogs out there then I would check the third camera and it would be a mix of dogs and not once did I see mine. She girl stated that small dogs were first thing in the morning. Didn't make much sense but I went along with it. I had a coworker drop my dog off with a bag of stuff. (Food, treats, packing list, harness, leash, instructions,etc) and they would ONLY take his food. I was then told to give the place a call about his food... when I had called they told me that it was too much food. However, when he was picked up by someone they were given nothing back. I called to ask where the food was since it was quite expensive food and they said that they had run out of it. Ok fine. Long story short other than that part of my review my review is just like every other negative review on here for the Wakefield location. My dog had to be taken to the animal hospital for testing and x-rays because he left their beyond sick. I will never recommend this business to anyone nor will my dog ever see that place again. I don't care if they were to offer me free daycare for life. They should be ashamed of themselves! Again like another person stated my dog to was in complete perfect health. I have vet records from July 16 and 20th confirming that he was up-to-date on all shots vaccines bloodwork fecal, etc. He went there on July 21st. NEVER again! My poor dog! read more

I have a 2yo German Shepherd named Jagger and can't speak highly enough of my experience with Best Friends and staff. We have left our dog in their care 3 times and each time would get a 5 star rating. Jagger is excited to see staff when he arrives and is well taken care of and happy when returning home. Jagger doesn't like other dogs and this isn't a problem. They offer one on one play time and it works out great. We have him groomed there as well. I brought my dog to Best Friends Wakefield on November 1, 2014 for an overnight stay.  She came home limping.  I didn't think anything of it because I assumed she had just spent too much time laying down (she's lazy). She had stayed there before with no issue. My dog was scheduled to stay 10/02/15-10/05/15.  The day before she was scheduled to stay I get a voicemail that tells me I need to bring something documenting a negative fecal sample and a lepto vaccination... neither of which was required when I reserved and no one told me I needed.  As and positive, when I called they told me that since they did a poor job notifying everyone she could stay this time, but would need it the next time. I picked my dog up when I returned home, around 615pm (she had stayed to be groomed). When I got her home and sat on the couch with her I noticed a huge hole/wound in her lip. I immediately called them back. I was told my message would get passed on to the manager and if she wasn't at a conference the next day, I would receive a call.  No one knew what happened, but it was large enough that someone SHOULD have noticed it.  Maybe they wouldn't know how it happened, but someone should have seen it and alerted me to it before I left! The next day the same employee I spoke to called and said he was checking on the dog and stated that he spoke to everyone involved with the dog and no one knew what happened.  He also stated that the manager was out of town at a conference until Friday and I should expect a call then (yet was told it was a one day conference the day before).  Today is Friday. I have received NO phone call from management.  I am confident that they saw the dog's wounds and knew that the dog was limping, and something should have been said to me BEFORE I left.  Instead, I think they didn't want to accept responsibility for my dog's injury (because I paid the $7 for the 'healthy pet plan' to cover situations like this) and decided not to tell me so they wouldn't have to pay. I won't be taking my dog back because they either don't pay enough attention to the animals (it was groomed that day so how could they not have seen it?!) Or they intentionally don't inform customers of injuries to avoid financial responsibility, you have to call multiple times to reach someone when there is a problem, and the manager can't be bothered to follow up and deal with an issue when one happens. Again I'm very disappointed with how the cut of both of my dogs came out. I've had a total of 3 visits with them. The first time it actually came out really nice, Which made us try them again. But the second time they pretty much just shaved them, cutting their coats really short and uneven, I was so disappointed I decided not to say anything immediately, I was fearful my anger was going to get the best of me and I would say something mean. With our high hopes from the first time, I called in a few months later and explained that the first cut was awesome and the second was really bad. So I asked who did it the first time and who did it secondly, After they explained to me that the person who had it cut them the second time was no longer working there and that the first person was there and available, I decided to give them another try. They ended up calling me the day before our appt. to cancel, saying they ended up double booking and had no room, they apologized and even offered us a small discount, "Ok.. that's fine." I said and decided to wait the remaining of the week until they had availability. I dropped my dogs off. When we picked them up the cut was as bad as the second time if not worse, again completely uneven, you can actually see the waving of the buzzer all over their body, even around their heads where one would think it would get a little more attention, longer on one side than the other. My girlfriend (who picked up our dogs) politely expressed her concern and dislikes. Which, sad to say, we're honestly not even addressed. I will be posting pictures of the cut later. Disappointing! A clear lack of oversight at this facility. I came across an advertisement searching through Groupon that led me to try this place. They advertise the 1st night is free. Excellent. My first impression was poor communication. Rarely do you get a live body on the phone when you call to ask questions about the registration process, etc for new customers. I left a voicemail after a few days but they didn't call back. Their website offers you a link to sign up for a tour but, again, no call back. I had to keep calling to get someone to help set that up. I let a lot of things go as there are a lot of businesses short handed these days. The 1st boarding experience seemed alright but all I could go by was the report card they provide you with. It was all positive. They claimed he ate his meals and played well with other dogs. A month later I returned to board my dog. I packed his 2 meals and some snacks for playtime. It's assumed someone there will be looking after your dog to ensure he eats and can relieve themself. I arrived the next day at 5 pm to pick him up. Unfortunately, I was distracted at the desk when they tried to overcharge me. While clearing up the bill one girl hands me my dog and another hands me the bag I sent him there with. I asked if there was a report card and asked how he did. Of course they tell you all good things because they already took your money. They said no report card and they don't do that anymore. I thought that was odd. How do they offer owners with feedback if they aren't keeping track? They told me at the desk how they get more reservations then they can accommodate. Of course they said al the right things so that you return. He did great, played well, etc.... I had an observation on my way out that got me thinking. My dog urinated outside the door for the longest time as though he hadn't been let out all day. The same thing happened the 1st visit. My dog had a very full bladder. I finally arrived home and opened the food bag. His food was still there. In 30 hours he was given just 1 meal and all the snacks were still in a bag. None missing. They didn't feed him nor did they report there was any problem. I sat down and wrote an email listed on their site because they rarely answer the phone. I thought the owner or the manager would have called to apologize and explain what happened. I waited. NO RESPONSE. I called the next day and got an employee on the phone. She was apologetic but claimed the manager was not in the office. She took my number and said she'd relay the message. I told her how disappointed I was that my poor dog was left to starve and a full bladder on top of it. She explained there is a dog door in each dog room. That's great but my dog isn't trained to use one. How are they tracking if my dog is relieving himself or getting fed? What kind of a business is this? I told her if there is a problem with his eating habits then as a paid pet service business they should communicate with the owner. Again, NO RESPONSE. No call. Not only did I find this neglect but unprofessional as a pet service business. I felt the need to go to Yelp.com because the public needs to exercise caution when putting your precious pets in the care of these boarding facilities. Trust your instincts. We Took Our dog to Best fiends doggy daycare in Wakefield during Covid 19, I was not too impressed with the place from the outside. Initially things went well for the first 2 weeks. While picking up my dog , i met Jen whom tried to pressure me into buying packages for my puppy which I declined, I felt things went downhill Fast from there. It seems that Every Single Time I picked up my dog the staff took the time to Literally complain to me about my dogs disposition, I was told my Dog is " Mouthy". Folks I have a Goldendoodle puppy, one of the most passive dogs around.- Mouthy. I grew tired of this treatment and decided if the staffs best part of the day is to tell the owners of the dogs that they suck then you lose customers. Terrible. Trust the bad reviews as they mirror my experience. The place is filthy. My cats came back smelling like urine as did their carriers, our dogs were fed half of what they were supposed to be fed based on the amount of food they gave us back, never gave any treats that we left with them, cuts all over one of the pups and while we were there for pick up there was another customer in waiting for them to find some of her dog's things they lost. Never got the photos while we were gone as promised and the cameras were always "down". I'm horrified, if this is what we know about, imagine what we don't know about. Not going back, will be returning to Four Seasons Pet Resort where we never, ever had any issues like this. Not one positive thing to say. Stay far, far away if you care about your pets. read more

I was informed once I arrived the day of my reservation that you don't accept Pitbulls. This is extremely unacceptable. I had multiple reservations made for at least a month prior and I was not contacted once about my dogs breed. Information is required while booking online and I gladly selected that my dog was a pitbull mix. I arrived at your location the morning of my reservation and was turned away at check-in. What kind of dog boarding doesn't allow certain breeds? This means my reservation was not viewed prior to me showing up. I am truly disappointed and expected more from you. read more

I really like it here they are very nice and are always open to answering questions when you need them. I leave my nine-year-old boxer here when we travel and never feel uneasy. She always comes back very tired and seems very happy when we pick her up. *Please read all the way through.* 7/19/2015 Update: I ultimately moved my dog to PetsSmart in Saugus about a year ago, and I don't regret making that move. No nickle and diming, and they're wonderful with my dog. I always felt like the team at Best Friends were great with my dog. I made the switch because the haggling over pricing just got to be too much. Every time I would ask for a review of charges, and it was always a hassle. It's just part of the service provided at PetSmart. Two stars aren't enough to illustrate how happy my dog was here; they're to show that the haggling over price every time just became too much. What follows is my previous review: I love how everyone at Best Friends of Wakefield treats my dog. When I have to travel for work or for fun, I never worry about my dog. When I drop him off, the team at Best Friends is excited to see him. When I pick him up, he's his happy-go-lucky self. For that, I'm so grateful. That said, I don't like how Best Friends of Wakefield nickels and dimes me when they charge for their services. They need to be more flexible about drop-off times on Sundays -- having a three-hour window for drop-off/pick-up is poor, inflexible service. You shouldn't penalize clients who need to drop off their pets on Sundays. You also shouldn't charge a premium for pick-up on Sundays -- as is the case at Best Friends. On a very positive note: I should add that the team at Best Friends has held the place open for a few minutes for me when I was rushing to get there. That particular time, I had a flight delay that was beyond my control. Again, for that, I'm so grateful. The team there are amazing. If I did choose to move my dog away from Best Friends it wouldn't be because the team there isn't great -- it would be because I'd gotten tired of being nickle and dimed. I have to wonder: If they can love my dog so much at Best Friends, perhaps they could love him that much someplace else where they're more customer-friendly in the way they charge for overnight stays. read more

Won't be bringing our dog here anymore. Used to come all the time. I've had 3 dogs for a combined 20 years. This is a badly managed kennel with a manager who doesn't appear to have the dogs health in mind and won't call you if something comes up about your dog's health. Two bad experiences: (1) New dog, recently neutered. Provided proof from vet of vaccines and neutering. After dropping off, kennel called to say they didn't believe the dog had been neutered. (Said that since dog was still humping other dogs, I was lying). Asked them to call the vet to confirm, and they said they did not routinely save vaccination or vet records so they didn't know who our vet was. (anyone else concerned by this???!!) I gave them the contact info. After getting off the phone, I thought we were all set and that dog would stay in group play. Kennel did not call the vet, instead changed our dog to "individual/no-play" (which is 3 short walks each day and costs more!!!) and didn't tell us until we returned. Within 2 minutes of pickup, they called the vet and confirmed that he was neutered. Said that would have changed things. ???!!!?? Worse, it turns out that all of this was done by the manager, so it's not like this was a rogue employee. Manager says she can change the dog's activity and plan without asking or informing us. (2) Previous 5yo black lab, friendly and had been to group play many times. Picked up with large laceration/cut on back leg. Vet who saw the dog the next day (after I picked up) said it was consistent with dog bite or "grooming accident" that had happened several days before (during kennel stay). BF Kennel never noticed cut and had no idea if the dog had been attacked during group play. Said maybe it happened in the car home???!! If you want to know your dog is in a safe environment and that the kennel will call you with questions/issues/accidents -- then this is not the kennel for you. read more

We moved to the Boston area about 4 months ago. We were looking for a Doggy Daycare, Hotel, & groomer to take care of our 2 year old black lab, Charlie. We were a little anxious for his first visit but after his first day we were put at ease. Charlie loves going to Best Friends. He literally runs to the entrance and is so excited to see everyone. They are all so friendly & caring. He always looks beautiful after being groomed and exhausted after daycare. We love that they offer live video so we can check in on him while we are away. I have been going here for several years, for various services. I called them twice last night and left messages about a grooming appointment. Tried again today, twice, to get through. Phones were never answered, nor was my call returned. I don't know if something is wrong with their phones, but that is not a good situation when you have owners who may need to call about a pet who is already there. If they are simply not answering nor returning calls, then that is a poor way to do business. I'm very surprised and disappointed today. read more

I will never, never, never return to this horrible place. I boarded my 17 week old pup and my almost 15 year old dog. Neither dog was given the treats I sent for them. All my food and treats were bagged with my dogs name on it My pup was not given her wet food and my older dog apparently was not feed one meal as the food was returned to me. I sent one small toy and the slow eater bowl for the puppy, the bowl was returned but not the toy. We were promised pictures during the stay-DID NOT HAPPEN. My family members had a similar experience during this stay I do not trust this place to properly care for any animal. Never again will my animals go to this dirty place where they do not want anyone in the kennel area when you drop off your pet. That should have been a red flag!!! What are they hiding? I would give no stars but there was no option for that. I 'll be heading back to Four Seasons Pet Resort for any further boarding needs. RUN DON'T WALK AWAY FROM THIS PLACE read more

I LOVE these guys! The first time we brought my dog here for a couple nights, he came home exhausted and slept for about a day straight. We knew that his reaction to showing up here for a second time would tell us how he really liked it, and oh boy- the second we pulled up in our car, he started to whine and tried to jump out. He was BEYOND excited to be back! They have done a great job cutting his nails twice, and a great job brushing his teeth (two things that can be interesting to get him to let you do). We'll continue to bring him here, and can't wait to try out some of the other grooming services. read more

I would rather give no stars. Both my dogs were groomed yesterday, including bath and cut. They look like they were cut by a five-year-old. Their cuts are uneven, really short on the top of her head. Back is completely uneven. I will not Be back to best friends. They absolutely do not look professionally cut. read more

I take Arya here for their day camp and even grooming! They love her there just as much as they love her! She's always excited to go in! She comes home tired and happy after a day of playing! Prices are reasonable and they truly care about the dogs that come in. They know her anxiety issues and they are able to work with her. I've also had them bathe and grind her nails and they do a wonderful job with her! We'll continue using them as they're great! read more

We love it here. Our 9 year old lab has been coming here for Doggy Day care and boarding since she was a puppy. We have moved about 45 minutes away and still make the trip back to board here here when we go away because she is in such good hands. I would highly recommend! read more

Love Best Friends. Will not entrust my pets to anyone else. The staff is so caring and friendly. I love the little extras. They are more than just day camp and boarding. They really engage with the pets and come up with creative ideas for that engagement (Live acoustic guitar, prom party and bubble pop). They come home thoroughly tired. I can say "would you like to visit your best friends?".... his eyes get wide, his ears perk up, his tail whips and his head tilts. He knows!! Great care and love is given to every pet. They have live streaming and provide pictures of the fun throughout the day so you can feel assured that fun is being had and your babies are in great care. read more
