Getting our Ethiopian grub on! Yum
    Corinna M.

While visiting So Cal from out of town, we took the opportunity to find some authentic Ethiopian food. This little place is tucked away in a small plaza, but the interior is clean and spacious. Don't expect anything too fancy, but the hospitality from this family-owned staff was so welcoming. Our server was very patient explaining some of the differences of their entrees and he was super accommodating to put together a platter that met our desires. The food was delicious. Clearly, authentic spices and recipes. They do not have the ability to adjust spice level, so be prepared. But as a self-proclaimed spice-wimp, it wasn't too bad. The flavors made up for this and we loved our meal. Highly recommend supporting a small business who delivers excellent service and an amazing repertoire.

My go to for Ethiopian in OC. Have been to this location a few times in person, but saw it on DoorDash, so I had to get my Ethiopian food fix. Everything is so flavorful and consistently good. Got the beyayenetu with meat. Will be back soon to hopefully convert a few others on Ethiopian food.

My friends and I were coming from a visit to an orthodox monastery, and K was so gracious to introduce us to this place. What a joy. What a delight. What a genuine gift. The food , especially a party plate, is perfect to share in a group setting. The injera is delicious and made fresh. Service has been incredibly kind and attentive. God bless you all+

    Yum! First time trying Ethiopian in the area and it was worth the drive from up south. The interior reminds me of every family Ethiopian restaurant I've ever been to... meaning you go for the food, not the ambiance. The cashier and waiter were both so kind and helpful, great at checking in and bringing things when asked. FYI water is bottled and they charge. The cashier recommended one dish per adult in the group so with a group of 4 we ordered 4 items: the veggie combo, the shiro, the awaze tibs, and the alicha wot (for which we subbed lamb, it usually comes with beef). Every item was so good! Sometimes at Ethiopian places I like some veggie dishes but not all, but here every single dish was delicious. The red lentils, tibs, and alicha wot in particular were all outstanding! It was the perfect amount for 4 hungry people and one toddler. The one quibble I had was the injera. It didn't taste like it was freshly made in house which I understand is labor intensive and often places will purchase it from a vendor.. but the fresh injera I've had before is super fluffy, pliable, thick, and still warm... This injera was cold, variably thin and thick, and didn't quite have the level of sourness that I usually enjoy. Service was so warm and friendly. Would definitely return to support them!;

First time trying Ethiopian food. Came here Saturday about dinner time and it took about 30 mins for the food to arrive. The place was pretty much full by the time we got our food. I think what we ordered was a good spread of food to try. The veggie combo sides were all different and unique in flavor. The spice was a bit much for others in the party but i think without the spice i think there would be less flavor. The chicken leg meat fell off the bone and was super tender. The portions are also actually quite bigger than expected. The food isn't something I would usually go for but Beteseb is a great place for Ethiopian with both rustic and authentic flavors.

    Doro Wot Veggie Combo

Stopped by on a Tuesday night for dinner, and while the eatery was empty, we still enjoyed the fantastic food. We ordered the veggie combo and doro wot, and we were enjoyed everything on the platter. The food was served on a large injera and still came with a side basket of injera. Each serving was flavorful and (although a little salty) paired amazingly with the injera. I did find the doro wot a little too salty on the flavor profile, but everything from the veggie platter was fantastic, especially for those who love chickpeas and lentils. The staff was super accommodating when we had questions about the food, and I will for sure be back for more of the veggie platter.

Our previous favorite Ethiopian spot has sadly closed its doors so I wanted to try this place out. The outside sign says restaurant and market. It's a very spacious area, located in a smaller plaza next to a nail salon, neighborhood market and water store. You place your order at the counter then the food is spread out on a large injera topped tray. We got kitfo (think of steak tartare with butter and spices) and doro wot (spicy stew of chicken drumstick plus hard boiled egg) . There is a veggie special (many kinds of stewed beans and lentils, (Kik alicha split pea, Shiro (puréed split pea) plus sautéed cabbage and one finely chopped crisp greens that was quite citrusy. Overall quite good, although with distinct differences from what I've had. Extra injera is an added charge, but that's necessary these days to stay in business! Also got the best cups of coffee, without the ceremonial roasting and grinding. I don't usually take sugar with my coffee but adding it made the coffee taste even better. Very friendly chef/owner and his family served us.

We had a wonderful experience enjoying flavorful Ethiopian food at Beteseb. The food was so fresh and the injera was delightful. This is only our second time eating Ethiopian food and the owner was so helpful at making recommendations. The food was delicious! My favorite part was the warm hospitality and especially learning about Ethiopian traditions like Gursha. We had a great time and we will be back.

Miser wot (red lentils), yellow split peas, and chickpeas
    Sarah H.

My favorite Ethiopian restaurant of SoCal! I tried their miser wot, yellow split peas, and they very kindly gave me a bit of chickpea to try too as I had been curious about it on the menu. The red lentils had a striking, spicy taste packed so much flavor, the yellow split peas were really filling/satisfying, and the chickpeas were well blended and almost smoky in flavor. I would recommend those three dishes 100%, or getting the veggie combo to get a wider array of options. Will be returning!

Visited for the first time and it was great! The key wot was nice, flavorful, and juicy. 10/10 spices, and the veggie combo was also solid with so much variety. This was my first time having injera and it did not disappoint! Loved how light, fluffy, and fresh everything was, while being so flavorful and hearty at the same time. We were kindly helped, super welcoming service. The place is very casual but still enjoyed dining in. Will definitely be back!

This was truly Homemade heart on a platter If you want a meal that feels like you've been invited into someone's private home, Beteseb is the real deal. True to its name (which I found out mean "Family"), it's owned and operated by a mother, father, and their children. That family warmth comes through with everything you taste. They are incredibly welcoming and take immense pride in what they do. The food is on another level: Freshness: Everything is cooked to order. Its refreshing to find a place where the meal that is genuinely fresh and never "leftovers from the previous meal or day". The Platter: The variety, flavor and color on the platter are incredible! Even the cheese is made in house and crumbly, and the stews have a deep, slow-cooked richness! They have a veggie and a meat platter! There were 4 of us so we got them both! Sooooo GOOOD!! The Injera: The injera is completely homemade and has been fermenting slowly for days... The makes it not only gluten free, but also gives it that perfect flavor and soft texture that I havent experienced anywhere else. THE COFFEE!!!: Even the spiced coffee shows their care; the blend of ginger, the spices they add is distinctive and flavorful. It's rare to find a place that feels this honest. I'll be back for the people and the food every single time.

Everything was so delicious! The staff is very friendly and attentive. Strongly recommend trying this restaurant. I drove from Victorville to eat here in Anaheim. And it was also surprisingly affordable.

What an amazing family owned and run Ethiopian restaurant that serves delicious food!! This was a hit and I enjoyed everything I ate there. Beteseb means family in Amharic and you could tell this is home cooked food at its finest to be enjoyed with friends and loved ones. The waitstaff was super helpful in explaining all the different dishes seeing that we were all newbies in trying Ethiopian food. We ordered the veggie combo, the doro wot, key wot, and alicha wot. It came with injera bread (and you could get extra) which was spongey and tangy, the perfect vehicle to sop up the delicious stews and lentils. I think my favorites were the alicha wot and the collard greens in the veggie combo - I couldn't stop eating even though I was so full. There was so much food, we barely made a dent and had plenty for leftovers. I came all the way from Los Angeles and this place is worth the drive and definitely should be on your radar whether you are a local or come from further away.

This restaurant surpasses them all. We came to celebrate my friend's birthday (she eats here all the time, has lived in Africa for years, and knows the owner and his family) and ordered the vegetarian combo, okra, Awaze Tibs (beef), hot bubbling Tegabino shiro, and a fried sambusa (lentil filling) appetizer to share. The flavors and seasonings used in the veggie dishes and beef had a nice balance and went exceptionally well together. The injera bread was fluffy and had a good mouthfeel, with enough bounce and texture to pick up and hold the delicious food and sauces together into the perfect bite-sized morsels. Injera bread was so good that I would eat this plain. As a sourdough flatbread, their injera was not overly sour nor dry. We also finished 2 bottles of Ethiopian honey wine, which was less sweet than I expected and closer in profile to a light Chardonnay, than a sweet wine. Wine was a perfect pairing for the food. As far as beverages go, they have a small selection of beer and wine in the menu, along with Ethiopian coffee/tea which is freshly brewed to order. They also have a nice traditional coffee/tea setting in one corner of the restaurant and I was told they provide a special freshly brewed coffee service on weekends. Definitely a top recommendation from me, for authentic Ethiopian and Eritrean food. My friend informed me that this restaurant is a labor of love/care from the owner, who had a very successful engineering career before he opened this restaurant, which was a dream of his to share the foods he grew up with to the local Ethiopian and Eritrean community. This is not like any of the other restaurants I've visited in Berkeley or even LaBrea's Little Ethiopia. It's focused on a more luxurious experience with genuinely authentic touches. ** ELEGANTLY ETHIOPIAN ** Warm, welcoming, and elegant, the staff is highly attentive, from the ceremonial hand washing to refilling glasses, and detailed explanation of menu items & Ethiopian culture. Also, the staff gives you your space, much like you'd enjoy your meal and time in Europe. Or as a nice meal is probably honored in Ethiopia. There seems to be a lot of care put into how to enjoy a feast with proper rituals in place. Speaking of honoring, Aunt Yvette's seems to also reserve a high regard for coffee as I sneaked a peek at a Coffee Ceremony on the menu. I will have to come back and try that next time. ** THE FEAST ** When at Ethiopian, it's always about sharing a platter. So after some deliberation, me and my lunch date settled on the Vegan Combo. It has all the fun vegetable options like the Berbere Red Lentils, Cabbage & Carrots, Yellow Split Pea, and Ethiopian Potatoes. We added Chicken Tibs as our protein. However, I really wanted the Cornish Game Hen, but lost in the negotiation part so I will need to return another time to try it (along with the coffee ceremony). As you may know, there are no utensils since you eat with the Injera spongy bread and use your hands. That's why the hand washing with rose water was a nice start to our lovely brunch. We also ordered a shot each of Tej, an authentic Ethiopian honey wine. It was fizzy and had a hint of apple cider vinegar taste, but paired well with the earthy spices of our meal. To fluff up the water sitch, there was an anise, ginger, and citrus water that's like a healthy, African aqua fresca for $5. After we mopped up all the spices sauces and exotic flavors with the ever-refilled injera (spongy, Ethiopian bread) we were stuffed. It was plenty food for the two of us. ** TURN UP THE HEAT ** For fire breathing ghost chili fans and spice freaks who love testing the Scoville scale on their tongues, I highly recommend any item that has MITMITA in it. I asked for extra since I'm one of those spice junkie nut jobs who needs her capsaicin fix with certain foods. Mitmita's flavor notes don't overpower and I was able to sprinkle my meal generously with heat. **NOTE: Mitmita in the ingredients list doesn't mean it's too spicy, but if you ask for extra spicy, it'll give you a good kick in the mouth ;) Good thing there's a list of craft cocktails to squelch the heat.

Our party of 3 walked in on a Sunday upon opening (12pm), and we were seated immediately. We were first asked if we had a reservation, so I'm guessing you can call in. The small restaurant had a handful of tables for parties of 2-3 and lounge seating with low tables for parties of 4. There was one small table seating 2 outside without shade. Parking was easy in the small strip mall, though I can see it being busy during the week when other businesses are open. INTERIOR Upon entering, I was wowed by the beautiful decor and nature vibes. I noticed the green plants, glass ceiling lights shaped like rocks, and a dark cork wall in the back. I loved the gold cups and bamboo shaped water pitcher. The fans overhead kept us cool on a day that was supposed to be 90F. SERVICE The owner was super sweet and warned us (as first time visitors) about the seats rocking backwards. She proactively explained the menu including specials and made recommendations. Our server was prompt and equally courteous. He draped the napkins for us and sprinkled rosewater onto our hands as sanitizer. He offered well-timed refills for injera during our meal and provided scented hot towels at the end. DRINK/FOOD ORDERED - Hibiscus Iced Tea ($18 pitcher / $10 glass). We ordered a pitcher of Palm Tree tea to share, but I'm pretty sure we got hibiscus since it was dark red and tasted like hibiscus. It arrived in an adorable gold teapot. The tea was lightly sweet and tangy. - Beef Awaze Tibs ($27). This was our add-on to the vegan combo. I enjoyed the flavorful, fall-apart tender chunks of beef in a spicy sauce with onions. However, the stew was extremely oily for me. - Vegan Combo ($37). The combo by itself would have fed the 3 of us comfortably. While I enjoyed the overall taste and lightness of the vegan stews, I personally have a preference for the taste of butter. Misir wat (berbere stewed red lentil): It was good and had a more pronounced earthy flavor leaning towards bitter. Kik Alicha (turmeric stewed yellow split pea): I enjoyed the texture of the peas with some halves left in tact. Gomen (braised kale): I didn't taste much of the onion and garlic, but more of a tang than anything else. Kale salad: the kale leaves were tender and lightly dressed with a creamy dressing. It included beets that were surprisingly mild in flavor. Cabbage & carrot: I enjoyed the warm spice profile. Ethiopian style potato (rotating offering): the coconut curry potato we had on this day was excellent - sweet, savory, and flavorful. Seasonal split pea stew topped with with EVOO: this tasted similar to the Kik Alicha. It was good, but I preferred the Kik Alicha. The combo plate also included two condiments: Timatim (Ethiopian tomato salad) and sunflower milk, a dipping sauce made from sunflower seeds. The sunflower milk was so good! For injera, we received 2 rolls per person to start. After 3 pieces, I started eating the one on the plate that soaked up the stews. The injera was good, thick and spongy with a bouncy chew. However, the sharp sourness of the bread was a little unbalanced with the vegan stews. It was served cold, but I prefer warm or room temp.

I had never seen Lalibela before, and then after a brief search saw all the praise and love. It certainly looked nice. So, early evening on a Saturday, with Lalibela gradually filling up, we were seated. After perusing and strategizing (along with the help of our friendly Lalibela person), we ordered three things: Sambusa -- like a samosa but way more interesting. So, instead of the potatoes and peas, the sambusa had more seasonings and meat filling. One per order, and delicious. Veggie Utopia and Doro Wot -- The Veggie Utopia is one of the signature dishes, and will certainly look familiar to anyone who's ever had Ethiopian food. Several individual portions set on the perimeter of the giant platter sitting atop the injera (the flat spongey 'bread' that's both plate and utensil). Inside that sat the Doro Wot -- a chicken leg and potato in inside a 'stew' or 'wot'. The wot was dark and almost chocolatey, reminiscent of a good mole. The salad that comes with the Doro Wot was placed in the big circle. Two people (or more) could feast well on all this. They also serve beer and wine at Lalibela. Great experience. Awesome food. Lovely service.

The egusi was amazing and the fufu ball was perfect consistency, light and moist, a wonderful cloud to accompany your egusi. The egusi was my favorite, but the rice, fish and plantains were good too. There are plenty of tables, seating and parking. I loved the small but private parking lot. There is pretty are on the walls and a TV playing if you want entertainment. The ambiance is peaceful and tasteful. Service was kind and friendly. There was a man who was very helpful and considerate of our lack of knowledge. He made recommendations and we asked for low spice--and the spice level was perfect in the egusi! The egusi had just enough spice for flavor but not too much to ruin out meal for us (spice wimps!). We are thankful. This weekend we were just passing Long Beach, but we will definitely return again, looking forward to more Nigerian food - worth the trip just for the food. This was our first time trying Nigerian food, and first time at Omalicious/Sumputous…read more We ordered the beef egusi with fufu and combo with coconut rice plantains and fish. Both super delicious we cleaned our egusi plate clean!! Very generous portions and service was really great. They were very nice! We loved the food so much we ordered okra soup (made to order fresh) and another egusi to-go but we decided to try with the goat meat. Normally we aren't goat meat people but we're down to try it! Everything was super delicious. We would definitely come back, excited to try the beef Patties in the future they were sold out when we came. Highly Recommend to others!
