5/5 - Amazing First-Time Experience! I'm visiting from Sacramento and wanted to try something different. This was my very first time trying Ethiopian food, and I'm honestly so glad I chose this place. The flavors were absolutely incredible -- rich, bold, and perfectly seasoned. Every bite had something new to offer, and the injera paired with the dishes was so delicious and unique. It was definitely different from anything I've tried before, in the best way possible! What really stood out was the owner. They were so warm, welcoming, and genuinely excited to share their culture and food with me. They took time to explain the dishes and made me feel completely comfortable even though I was new to Ethiopian cuisine. You can tell they truly care about their customers and take pride in their food. If you've never tried Ethiopian food, this is definitely the spot to start. Great flavors, great experience, and amazing people behind it! Highly recommend

It was our first time trying Ethiopian food! It was actually nice that the server asked us and explained how they do it in their culture. Which I thought was nice and very thoughtful. They asked if it was okay to have the food in the same plate as that's how it is traditionally done. The inside gave me mom and pop shop vibes which I loved!! Support locals!! I will assume their decor was all traditional and it was actually genuinely nice knowing about a new culture! But has a few tables and even a little bar area. There wasn't too much ppl inside as the day we went. Awaze Tibs chicken 9/10 it was nice and tender. I wouldn't really know how to fully explain the flavor. But trust I did like it. But it wasn't too much spice. I will say maybe I want it to have a hint of spiciness but that is a personal preference :)) I forgot what the beef dish that was chosen since the original wasn't available but I will say I preferred the beef over the chicken!!! Next time I'm here I do wanna give the traditional combo a try!!! Will come again and try more stuff!!

Although I won't say this will be my most favorite cuisine, I am by certainly very happy to have tried it. Such a colorful palette of exotic yet homestyle vegetables, mixed with their refreshing spiced meats and earthy chicken and eggs, you can completely taste the culture on the plate. I will definitely try more meat next time and am interested in their coffee/tea ceremony as well. Service was great as well. Thank you!

I'm so glad I found this place, the food was phenomenal. We got the combination platter and it was just so delicious. Injera, doro wat and all the veggies were just so amazing. Service was great, the gentlemen kept coming around to check on us. The restaurant is adorable and perfect. I'm definitely coming back!

Kind of a hidden gem in my opinion. Went for dinner and the restaurant was absolutely empty. But the employees were super kind and attentive. We got the combo and I absolutely loved it. The Injera wasn't super sour. The variety was great. They ran out of the doro wot and instead replaced it with a different chicken dish, which was very yummy. Ambience is clean and quiet. Great for conversation. Definitely looking forward to coming back. There aren't a bunch of Ethiopian places around, so I'm very excited to have found the spot.

First time having this type of food, and it did not disappoint. This restaurant is tucked away in the corner, and packed with flavor.

Was my first time trying out this place and i absolutely love it! Everything tasted so delicious and fresh. We ordered and had to wait 35 minutes which we don't mind just because we know it's fresh! It took us nearly 3 days to finish everything! My favorite is definitely the beets and veggies! Definitely will be back! :)

    Traditional combo. LOVE IT!!

I highly recommend this place . We ordered traditional combo, 2 beef and chicken item. Also honey wine and Ethiopian tea . Must order combo, they have everything you want to eat in the bread and specially vegetables are so good , very simple flavor but flavorful not sure what kind of seasoning they use but really good. I would go back and order combo again . Also server was very helpful and very caring !!! I recommend this place

it has been a while since I had Ethiopian food and we had the veggie option and it was amazing. it was packed with flavor and we just finished the entire platter and left stuffed. Washed it all down with a delicious and refreshing Ethiopian beer. The owners daughter was our server and she was so attentive and very friendly as well. It's always a good sign that the food is amazing when the locals flock to it. We definitely plan on returning and recommended enough!!

Friend and I came for lunch, which turned out to be a quiet and relaxing meal :) it was our first time eating Ethiopian food and we really enjoyed it! Our server showed us how to eat it and was overall very attentive throughout our visit. Service was a bit slow, but it seemed like it was only our server doing all the serving and cooking??? Maybe another cook at most?? Anyways, on to the food! What we got: - Traditional Combo for two people, which consisted of Doro wot (spicy chicken stew) and what you see on the big serving plate are lentils, cabbage, collard greens, tender beef prepared w/ house herb blend, tomatoes, green peppers, onions, berbere (spiced red pepper powder), and (spiced, infused, and flavored butter). This came with a side of injera, which was used to scoop up the food from the plate. It was a fun and delicious eating experience! There was so much food, my friend and I split up the leftovers and I had it for dinner that night. Overall, I would come back and bring more people with me to eat!!

Is the injera gluten-free (i.e. 100% teff flour)? Some places add barley or wheat flour when making injera...big problem if you can't have gluten. 😕

their injera is not normally gluten free, but they can make it on request - they just need advance notice. at least a day, but more notice if there are a significant number of people in your party who can't have gluten.

    Is the meat halal?

    Yes the meat is halal.

Are they currently still open for takeout during this pandemic?? What are the hours? Thank you

Yes, not sure about the hours. I called at 5:15pm on a Tuesday for takeout. Website is not working but there are photos of the menu on yelp (Dec 29, 2020)

Can your vegetarian options be made vegan ? Thanks !

I'm pretty sure it's vegan. Last time I went, I asked and they said it had absolutely no animal products-- eggs, milk etc.

Does this place serve FuFu or Egusi?

    I don't think so.

Can you make gluten free injera?

Absolutely (teff is GF), but when dining out, injera is occasionally adulterated with wheat (and/or other) gluten-containing flours, so be sure to ask the staff!

Don't let the strip mall parking lot and unassuming exterior fool you. Aunt Yvette's is really nice…read moreinside. This is not like any of the other restaurants I've visited in Berkeley or even LaBrea's Little Ethiopia. It's focused on a more luxurious experience with genuinely authentic touches. ** ELEGANTLY ETHIOPIAN ** Warm, welcoming, and elegant, the staff is highly attentive, from the ceremonial hand washing to refilling glasses, and detailed explanation of menu items & Ethiopian culture. Also, the staff gives you your space, much like you'd enjoy your meal and time in Europe. Or as a nice meal is probably honored in Ethiopia. There seems to be a lot of care put into how to enjoy a feast with proper rituals in place. Speaking of honoring, Aunt Yvette's seems to also reserve a high regard for coffee as I sneaked a peek at a Coffee Ceremony on the menu. I will have to come back and try that next time. ** THE FEAST ** When at Ethiopian, it's always about sharing a platter. So after some deliberation, me and my lunch date settled on the Vegan Combo. It has all the fun vegetable options like the Berbere Red Lentils, Cabbage & Carrots, Yellow Split Pea, and Ethiopian Potatoes. We added Chicken Tibs as our protein. However, I really wanted the Cornish Game Hen, but lost in the negotiation part so I will need to return another time to try it (along with the coffee ceremony). As you may know, there are no utensils since you eat with the Injera spongy bread and use your hands. That's why the hand washing with rose water was a nice start to our lovely brunch. We also ordered a shot each of Tej, an authentic Ethiopian honey wine. It was fizzy and had a hint of apple cider vinegar taste, but paired well with the earthy spices of our meal. To fluff up the water sitch, there was an anise, ginger, and citrus water that's like a healthy, African aqua fresca for $5. After we mopped up all the spices sauces and exotic flavors with the ever-refilled injera (spongy, Ethiopian bread) we were stuffed. It was plenty food for the two of us. ** TURN UP THE HEAT ** For fire breathing ghost chili fans and spice freaks who love testing the Scoville scale on their tongues, I highly recommend any item that has MITMITA in it. I asked for extra since I'm one of those spice junkie nut jobs who needs her capsaicin fix with certain foods. Mitmita's flavor notes don't overpower and I was able to sprinkle my meal generously with heat. **NOTE: Mitmita in the ingredients list doesn't mean it's too spicy, but if you ask for extra spicy, it'll give you a good kick in the mouth ;) Good thing there's a list of craft cocktails to squelch the heat.

Everything was good; I just have a personal preference for the taste of butter. *** I visited a couple of years ago and haven't had a chance to return due to distance. Our party of 3 walked in on a Sunday upon opening (12pm), and we were seated immediately. We were first asked if we had a reservation, so I'm guessing you can call in. The small restaurant had a handful of tables for parties of 2-3 and lounge seating with low tables for parties of 4. There was one small table seating 2 outside without shade. Parking was easy in the small strip mall, though I can see it being busy during the week when other businesses are open. INTERIOR Upon entering, I was wowed by the beautiful decor and nature vibes. I noticed the green plants, glass ceiling lights shaped like rocks, and a dark cork wall in the back. I loved the gold cups and bamboo shaped water pitcher. The fans overhead kept us cool on a day that was supposed to be 90F. SERVICE The owner was super sweet and warned us (as first time visitors) about the seats rocking backwards. She proactively explained the menu including specials and made recommendations. Our server was prompt and equally courteous. He draped the napkins for us and sprinkled rosewater onto our hands as sanitizer. He offered well-timed refills for injera during our meal and provided scented hot towels at the end. DRINK/FOOD ORDERED - Hibiscus Iced Tea ($18 pitcher / $10 glass). We ordered a pitcher of Palm Tree tea to share, but I'm pretty sure we got hibiscus since it was dark red and tasted like hibiscus. It arrived in an adorable gold teapot. The tea was lightly sweet and tangy. - Beef Awaze Tibs ($27). This was our add-on to the vegan combo. I enjoyed the flavorful, fall-apart tender chunks of beef in a spicy sauce with onions. However, the stew was extremely oily for me. - Vegan Combo ($37). The combo by itself would have fed the 3 of us comfortably. While I enjoyed the overall taste and lightness of the vegan stews, I personally have a preference for the taste of butter. Misir wat (berbere stewed red lentil): It was good and had a more pronounced earthy flavor leaning towards bitter. Kik Alicha (turmeric stewed yellow split pea): I enjoyed the texture of the peas with some halves left in tact. Gomen (braised kale): I didn't taste much of the onion and garlic, but more of a tang than anything else. Kale salad: the kale leaves were tender and lightly dressed with a creamy dressing. It included beets that were surprisingly mild in flavor. Cabbage & carrot: I enjoyed the warm spice profile. Ethiopian style potato (rotating offering): the coconut curry potato we had on this day was excellent - sweet, savory, and flavorful. Seasonal split pea stew topped with with EVOO: this tasted similar to the Kik Alicha. It was good, but I preferred the Kik Alicha. The combo plate also included two condiments: Timatim (Ethiopian tomato salad) and sunflower milk, a dipping sauce made from sunflower seeds. The sunflower milk was so good! For injera, we received 2 rolls per person to start. After 3 pieces, I started eating the one on the plate that soaked up the stews. The injera was good, thick and spongy with a bouncy chew. However, the sharp sourness of the bread was a little unbalanced with the vegan stews. It was served cold, but I prefer warm or room temp.
