I can't believe this is the fourth review I have written of this place. Here I am in Pittsburgh a whole year later and just couldn't stay away from this place. Years and years ago I ended up here with a friend who wanted to show me this different kind of pizza. And every year I come back to pittsburgh, I have to stop by. Yes all the ingredients on top are not cooked. But the pizza as well as the sauce underneath is cooked. And it makes for quite an exciting combination! I just tried anchovies with onions and it was so interestingly good and different. Maybe not for everybody but it totally worked for me! I got the pizza to go this time but they do have a dining room with a soda machine and it's first come first serve for seats. Recommended by many. It's not necessarily fair or inaccurate, but these are, essentially a variation on a lunchable. The crust is hot, the sauce is chunky and inoffensive. And then, the high quality provolone and decent pepperoni are thrown on top. It's sold by the price and pretty reasonable, honestly. It can get expensive if you go crazy with toppings though. I like that they had ginger ale as a fountain beverage option, as that's not something you see often. It's cute and charming. It was pretty busy but worth it. The area where it lost marks was that one of the employees came out with apron on. There's a rack right outside to hang aprons. The food was great for the novelty, but the hygiene. Ooof. read more

I can't believe I've been in Pittsburgh for 6 years and haven't made it here before I did. It's been on my list to try for so long and I'm so glad I finally stopped in. I was there in the middle of the busy weekday lunch rush. It's a popular spot for an affordable, good and hot lunch. Pizza was everything I wanted it to be and more! You definitely have to love cheese to love this one. A warm crispy crust piled high with cold shredded cheese. It's thick fat shreds and it's so perfect. The fried zucchini were also very good - real and house battered. The grease didn't taste dirty. My husband ordered a small house salad and again, you gotta love cheese! I've heard of this place for a while and was finally able to try the infamous pizza with the cold cheese. The woman that took my order was really friendly and helpful, she could tell I was new to the experience and gave me the rundown. I ordered waited maybe ten minutes and my food was ready... the crust had a nice crunch and the sauce was kinda sweet. The cheese melted a little bit but not like I've heard from other people. Sausage was warmed through which was nice but the toppings fell off often since it wasn't glued on from the melted cheese. I don't find this a life altering experience and probably wouldn't go back on my own since it's about 45 mins from me but If someone asked and was driving I'd spend my money here again. read more

This was my first time going to this iconic establishment. The server at the front was very friendly and patient while me and my friend decided what to order. I got two slices of pizza and a bottle of water for under $10. She did offer me a cup for water from the fountain for free. One slice was just cheese and pep one slices was sausage, onion and peppers. I put hot sauce on my slices which was available at the tables. It's an order at the counter, seat yourself, they'll call your name when your order is ready type of vibe. I enjoyed the slices - definitely a novelty. I have a special place in my heart for Beto's pizza and always will. Even though it's not my typical go to style of pizza it's always a special treat when I get it. The tang of the tomato sauce with the freshness of the cold cheese on top is the highlight for me. While it has aspects of cafeteria pizza for sure, this is a much more elevated version of it, although it brings up that nostalgia for sure. While I love the freshness of the cheese and the tang of the tomato sauce, the way they do the toppings and the crust is not my favorite. I generally avoid getting toppings on this style of pizza when ordering here for that reason. The crust is certainly unique though just as the rest of the pizza and I highly suggest going here if you are in the area as it has officially became a part of the Pittsburgh experience. read more

Well, where do I begin ? This past Saturday I was up in Chicago on business and had an early morning flight on Sunday to go from Chicago back to Baltimore and all the flights got canceled so I scramble and got a flight from Chicago to Pittsburgh and then rented a vehicle to drive from Pittsburgh through the snowstorm back to BWI airport to get my vehicle and drive home. So if that said, I picked up my jeep rental from the Pittsburgh airport and drove directly to Beto's to get some pizza and an Italian sub to drive back home for myself and my wife to enjoy. I ordered a slice with extra cheese and a slice with pepperoni and took six slices home along with the Italian hoagie. I did eat both slices there and let me tell you how bad I miss being local in Pittsburgh to stop here often to me. I grew up on his pizza for about 50 years. Whenever the original owner Jim was present running the restaurant and my father knew Jim real well. There's so many people that have pros and cons about the cheese, not being melted and so forth and so forth, but you're not gonna find a better cut of pizza anywhere in a Pittsburgh area in my opinion and that's the same for the Italian hoagie oven baked, of course which is simply fantastic. The ambience is just a very basic pizza shop. They have some table tables to sit down and eat, and they have self serve soda fountain with a nice selection of different soft drinks. The inside is generally very clean when I was there on Sunday night no complaints whatsoever and they do have a really nice selection of historic pictures of the old building and so forth, which brought back many memories whenever I was a child and my dad took me there. If you're in a Pittsburgh area, you deserve to give this place a try even though it's unique on how they do their pizza I think you'll really really enjoy it. The crust is on the money has a nice crunch to it, and the edges are perfect and their sauce is unique and very, very good especially if you get a couple pieces of the tomato under the cheese. It really makes it special. As I get older, it's harder and harder for me to drive from the Gettysburg area across the Turnpike to stop here but anytime we get near Pittsburgh we have to stop. I've wanted to try this place for a long time. I've watched the "pizza review guy" video and this pizza seems.....interesting? Yinzers say "you either love it or you hate it". For those who aren't initiated -- Beto's cooks the dough and sauce but doesn't cook the cheese and other toppings (unless it's an item like sausage, etc.). So this past Saturday, we happened to pass by and quickly turned around to give it a shot. The place was busy at 11 AM. People traveling in for the football game, people who watched this place on youtube from Green Bay, out-of-towners, etc. I got two slices with pepperoni and banana peppers. So my first issue is with the "pizza review guy's" comment that this is like "Old Forge" pizza. My wife is from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton region, home of Old Forge style, and this is nothing like the fried crust/baked toppings of Old Forge pizza. This is also not like any pizza I've ever eaten and while the toppings were fresh -- it just wasn't good. It was so bad I actually threw away my second slice. Wow! I'm truly not even a pizza person, but this one made my top five of all time. The crust is thin and super crisp. The addition of the cold cheese was a game changer for me. I absolutely LOVED it. I won't take points off, but the chunky sauce does give me a bit of the ick, but the rest of it makes up for the need to pick off the chunks. We are glad we tried this place. If you are in the mood to try something unique and great tasting food, this is your place. The pizza is baked on the oven, almost like a tomato pie, and then cheese or toppings are added to it. Kids were doubtful at the start of the Idea, but when we got our food, it tasted fantastic!!! Except I can not say that cheese melted in my mouth, but it certainly tasted good. We also ordered an appetizer platter, and we all liked the zucchini fry in them. I grew up in the Ohio Valley (Steubenville/Wheeling) the home of this style of pizza. I ordered a 28 cut half sausage half pepperoni tray to see what the dilly is. Folks, this pizza is delicious. It's a northern Appalachia regional pizza style and Beto's has it mastered. Fresh ingredients, sauce is a tomato lover's dream, cheese is proper, and the crust is baked just right; chewy inwards, crust handle is crunchy-ish but not too much. Both the sausage and pepperoni cuts were flavorful and recommended. I prefer to let pizza sit to room temperature and then eat. I took my cuts to go. There is a chill vibe to the dining area. Pretty simple, you either love Beto's or you don't ... cold cheese pizza is not for everyone. And I'm sorry if it's not for you... my advice... get it as take-out and keep the box closed for ten minutes... It was delicious like I remembered but my only huge issue was EVERY slice of pepperoni still had the paper on it. This messed up my entire meal because I had to take every piece off before I could eat a slice. Very disappointed. I still love the crust though...and the sauce. The pizza is straightforward. A wonderfully crisp crust, about a 1/4 inch thick covered in smashed tomatoes that have a fresh taste and come out of the oven hot. Then the squares are smothered in fresh, mozzarella cheese. Clean, simple, and delicious. We travel far for the squares and I know not everyone would appreciate this taste. We love it. Was great until I found two hairs on one slice of pizza Went for the first time on Mother's Day, was busy but we were able to find a table quickly and place our order. Prices for individual slices are reasonable but there is only one (very large ) size available for a whole pizza. Pizza was pretty good, personally I felt it had too much cheese, to the point it drowned out the crust and sauce, but since the cheese is cold it's easy to remove a little. Crust was crunchy and very good. Staff was friendly enough, but it's an order/pick up at counter place including getting your own drinks, so minimal interaction. Only have one jar/container of condiments like Parmesan cheese, garlic salt, etc for entire restaurant and garlic was in 2oz cup with lid not even a shaker. None of these things would have been worth a negative review for me and I would have happily went there again until I ate a leftover slice the next day and found two hairs. This slice was from a previously unopened box (the pizza is already boxed into multiple small boxes when you pick it up at counter). It was not opened until the next day when I got a slice out. The hairs were definitely not mine. Beto's definitely needs to improve their hygienic practices, hats for employees and not using communal food containers that people are potentially putting their fingers in. read more

Unique (to me, anyway) offering of pizza with raw cheese which adds a different dimension to the typical pizza experience, and I have to say it works! I can see the hype! I don't know if I prefer this to traditional baked cheese, but it is a nice idea for a change (and certainly less choking risk). The prices were also quite cheap, iirc it was around $3-3.50 for a cheese slice (they call it a "cut"). Do order ahead though. They have staffing shortage, and while the staff were friendly enough there was a long wait. Place was mostly clean but not perfect. Standard for a pizza joint I guess. I liked looking at the decor and they even have Ghostbusters pinball! I didn't play but it seemed like it was in working condition. The pizza comes standard with chunky tomato sauce, which they make clear they will not alter at request. I don't mind tomato chunks, but it might turn some off. We had order 8 slice and I think for most people if they like a lot of cheese on their pizza , this is their place to go, for me it was too cheesy and the pizza were square which I didn't mind but this place during lunch hours it gets really busy and crowded and somtimes there isn't any sitting. Stopped here while in the area and headed back dahntahn. Beto's BEEN on a short list to try for pizza, and this Saturday I knew it was time. Came in during lunchtime hours and ordered a takeout slices trio: 2 cheese and one pepperoni. The staff seem friendly- straightforward progress and they could tell I was a first-timer. To be transparent, I'm not sure why it takes so long to get slices out - bc as I was waiting I'm watching them pull multiple large tray pizzas out and cut them - and it just seemed slow to me with filling orders. Though, I am not sure. For the pizza? It really works. The service is always as it has been, aside from the fact that they don't bring the order to you anymore, and they just serve it in a to go box, not a big deal for me at all. The tables and such also got a nice upgrade. I have one VERY BIG complaint. I'm not sure when it happened, since I live a good distance away, but at some point they changed the sauce, there used to be nice chunks of sweet tomato in the sauce and it was perfect! Now... ugh, the tomato is gone, and for whatever reason they're making up for that with what tastes like mountains of garlic salt, and I LOVE garlic, so that should say a lot! Before getting there, I looked at the menu and noticed they also sell sandwiches and hoagies; something for everyone! I started with a slice of cheese and pepperoni and also ordered half a capicola sandwich, which is served toasted and with lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. The food took a bit to come out. I guess it's because they bake your slice of pizza crust and that's what takes long? Not sure. While we waited, we hawkishly waited for a table to clear. It's not a big place, so seating is prime. Overall, I liked the pizza. I was expecting really cold toppings but it turns out the cheese and other toppings you put on it are just room temperature, so it was fine. I'd return again. Came here on Friday for a late lunch. Not super busy, definitely more of a takeout place, but a decent amount of seating inside. For a pretty silly idea of having everything besides the sauce/crust cold it is way better than I would've imagined it to be.
