So I'm writing this from home where I'm cooking my own eggs. Waited 30 minutes to order eggs around 12:30 on a Sunday . If your a breakfast place, this is your prime time. 30 minutes roll by. When I asked what was up with the food she came back with a doughnut and told us that they would put a rush order on it. Waited an hour for a rush order to be put on our eggs? Now if the place was packed I'd be a bit more understanding. I have worked as a server and a cook and this was by no means busy. There were 5-7 workers hanging around and I swear I saw the cook walking around too. The 3 cups of coffee were great! Waiting over an hour for overpriced eggs is ridiculous. I was born and raised in Beverly, and this is the best breakfast place around. Anytime someone wants to go out for breakfast, Beverly Bakery is the place we head. I've tried several different items on the menu and every thing I've ordered has been perfect and fresh. I'm not a coffee drinker, but everyone I've been with raves about the coffee and they LOVE the cafe mocha! If you're looking for a good breakfast place on the Southside, this is the place to go. The coffee was fantastic. Atmosphere was quaint. They do not use high fructose corn syrup in baked goods, and use organic goods when possible. Food was above average. I recommend that they hire an experienced wait staff. Service is poor. I got up twice to refill my own coffee. The owner is nice, but wait staff is inexperienced and slow. read more

Below is a copy of an email sent to Beverly Bakery on 8/16/2014. Hello, We heard about your bakery from Chicago's Best TV show last year and often wanted to visit your establishment. I absolutely enjoy a great cup of coffee, great donuts, and love eggs benedict. One of my favorite coffees is Jamaican Blue Mountain. When I learned that your company roasted your own beans I knew your business was my kind of place. Last week Sunday, my wife and I finally made the 63 mile (126 miles round trip) trek from Volo, Illinois to sample your offerings. I have to tell you, we were not disappointed. That is until yesterday. While at your bakery, I purchased a half pound of Mexican coffee beans and a full pound of Jamaican Blue Mountain, so I thought. Having had beans in my grinder already I did not open your packages until the next Saturday morning. The 1lb bag marked Jamaican Blue Mountain had very dark and oily coated beans in it and did not have the usual aroma of true Blue Mountain coffee. I brewed the coffee as I usually do (hoping for that aww moment) but I was met with a strong-bold flavor. I'm not sure what I was drinking, but it sure was not Blue Mountain. Whatever it was/is tastes very good, but it's not what I paid $48 for. I opened the smaller half pound bag to view the beans and they had a much more familiar look to them. I won't be trying them for a few days to be sure, but I suspect I was given the opposite of what I ordered and paid for. How do you propose to remedy this? Since then, I tried the smaller bag of coffee hoping that perhaps it contained the Blue Mountain. Nope! I'm still waiting for a reply to my email. read more

I ordered a cake for my daughter's birthday party was not happy with the results. The Mgr./ person in charge of making the cakes is very unprofessional. I ordered a cake with 1/2 banana & 1/2 strawberries and I got a cake with mostly bananas. When I called to inform her of this she was very discourteous and rude. She rudely said, "she won't be able to make me happy in the future" and hung up the phone. No need to worry, I will spend my money elsewhere. It's all about the food, service and vibe! Beverly Bakery has it all. Despite some parking challenges which could have been resolved had I used the alley, parking is ample. Upon entering the restaurant there exists a feeling of warmth and friendliness which permeates through all the staff. The breakfast menu is varied and offers traditional favorites and many fresh baked goods. Of all the menu options our table tried that morning, all were delicious, properly prepared and fresh. Eggs were cooked perfectly, their potatoes prepared from scratch and the toast brought to the table without pre-buttering in the kitchen. We have been to The Beverly Bakery & Cafe a few times recently and have had nothing but great food, awesome coffee, delicious cupcakes & donuts, and wonderful service! They roast all the coffee in house and by all I mean all 15 varieties. Everything for breakfast is made to order. The french toast is made from Italian bread and is the perfect combo crunchy outside and soft inside. The pancakes are also great choice, my daughter loved the chocolate chip pancakes. The bacon is thick cut, maple cured...mmmmmmm.... And the coffee, always perfect! The owner loves his coffee and loves to talk coffee. We ordered a Ethiopian roast in a French press. They give you the press at your table and you "brew" it yourself. It couldn't have been better. The staff is very friendly and we heard the waitress call the owner "Dad". Love the family atmosphere! This place is neat because they roast their own coffee beans, and the coffee is good. They will ask if you want bold or smooth, I went for the bold which was an Ethiopian blend and it was good...not stellar but very good. They also sell coffee by the pound. I intended to have breakfast and buy a loaf of bread to take home, but they don't bake bread. I thought that to be a bakery you baked bread. If you only offer sweets you are a patisserie or pastry shop...well I am digressing. The lack of a loaf of freshly baked bread was disappointing. The breakfast my dining companion ordered was eggs over with bacon and some waffles. It looked okay, we didn't order any sweets, but I had the oatmeal that came with raisins and brown sugar. The order was way too much for one person, but what was great was that I was able to get a glass of soy milk (lactose intolerant) which is so lacking at a lot of breakfast places. In addition to the oatmeal I ordered a side of fresh fruit, which ended up being some day old watermelon and honeydew melon that had seen better days...you know when them melon begins to look translucent it's been around too long. They should not have served it. Oh yeah they do the inevitable latte, cafe mocha, cappuccino, thing but I judge coffee by ordering a simple cup of coffee...once it's adulterated it's hard to tell. The WiFi was down that day which is one of the other reasons I stopped by, that was disappointing since it was a sort of business meeting. The tables and chairs are cheap and not very comfortable, and there are no booths. But it is friendly and service is fast. I would go back to sample other things on the menu but I don't live in the area, if you do check it out, everyone raves about the donuts so they must be good. I prefer yeast donuts so they didn't grab my attention. I think it you go order a latte or cappuccino some cake donuts or something from the bakery. One patron told me the french toast was excellent. Not a bad place for the neighborhood, but I've had just as good a cup of coffee at the Original Pancake House in Hyde Park, and minus the bakery a better breakfast. read more

All I can say is "Chorizo Skillet"! When I don't have it on a Sunday afternoon, it's worse than missing my daily cup of coffee. I love everything about this place, from the super sweet owners to the staff (which ranges from high-school-age to warmly seasoned). Terrible service! I ordered a cake for my sons baptism there. First they told me they couldn't offer me a sheet cake and that I had to go with a round cake which was much more expensive. When I went to pick up my cake the next day, an hour before the baptism, they told me they forgot to make the cake! The place seems very unorganized and only 1 person seems to have answers to questions. They kept telling me, "Ask her, she can help you." Needless to say, I will no longer be going there. read more

i haven't lived on the south side in about 5 years, but i was still surprised that i had never even heard of this place until now seeing as i spent the first 20 years down here. my cousin was raving about this place for the entirety of thanksgiving dinner. i woke up really early the next day and made the 3 block trek. the coffee was AMAZING. i cant believe theres a place so close to my parents house that is roasting their own beans, tons of organic/fair trade choices. i was really in awe. the owner, jim, came out and told me all about his roasting process and what coffees he loved (he also told me about one he hated, which i thought was great). i wish i had some more time down here to try all the other beans he's got. it'll definitely be my first stop on my next visit here. one more thing: my cousin brought a pumpkin pie and cheesecake from there to dinner. people were raving about the cheesecake, but i was in a coma from the pumpkin pie. it was honestly the best one i've ever tasted. and i make a mean p pie myself. amazing. read more

This is the worst place I ever ate at, my girlfriend loves this place so we went and the breafast was warm (like they pop it in micoware for a second) and the turkey tasted like rotten eggs. I sent the turkey back and requested bacon, the owner came out and said is something wrong - I said yes I did not like the turkey, he proceeded to say your girlfriend love them and if nothing is wrong with the turkey beside your taste bugs I can not refund. I know this was mean but since I could not get a refund for my $1.95 turkey I did not leave a tip for my $28.00 bill. The owner should give tip.... read more

They truly care to make it a good experience for you and it's nice to see the regulars greeted as they gather up their carryout scones, muffins, cinnamon rolls, and other fabulous baked goods. The place is way over crowded, they couldn't squeeze another table in there if they tried. So why let people bring in baby strollers. Service is not the best,slow. Our server didn't check on us. When asked why people who came in after us had their food and we were still waiting I was told they had eggs,I guess an omelette is something else. Delicious donuts, a great selection of boutique coffees, clean, friendly. So why 3 stars? This place is very poorly run. They open late. closed on mondays, 7am on weekdays, 8am on saturday- that pretty much rules out stopping by on the way to work. Or before church. And they are REALLY unorganized. On a couple occasions I went in for a chocolate donut. and.... they didn't bake any that day. I quit going because their donut variety is small and unreliable. Got tired of picking up one kind of donut and then having to go to another bakery to get something as standard as a chocolate frosted donut for other family members. I pass this place EVERY MORNING on the way to duncan down the street because duncan is open and Beverly is not, and that is really too bad because I prefer Beverly's product. If they changed management and actually ran the place like a normal business this would be a neighborhood institution. Instead, it is an exercise in frustration more often than not. read more

I've lived in the Beverly neighborhood for decades. I welcomed Beverly Bakery when it opened several years ago. The owners are neighborhood people. Jim roasts his own beans and the variety would please most palates. The limited selection of pastries are good. Try the Hummingbird Cake -- it's second to none. Custom orders are very expensive, but I suppose that's a sign of the times. Table service is terribly slow, so if you are pressed for time you might try somewhere else. (After dozens of visits I can make the case, but I'm retired and rarely in a hurry.) Strange though. I recently asked them to fill an order for a delicious item I'd purchased several times before and the owner refused -- rather churlishly, I might add. When I e-mailed my concern, they flat out ignored me -- not good! I guess they were absent on the day customer satisfaction was taught. Consequently they lost my business. read more

The best kept secret on the southwest side of Chicago. I started my quest to find a sheet cake that would serve 60 people for my mother-in-law's 70th birthday party. I will start with Beverly Bakery even though they were almost the last bakery I visited because I could not find many ratings for them on the internet which is why I am writing this review. I asked to taste test their yellow cake. This cake was sooo.. moist the best that I had tasted after visiting at least 5 other bakeries. I ordered their yellow sheet cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream icing, this was also a photo cake and the photo was beautiful. The cake was a total success at the party with many compliments and no throw aways because icing is too sweet or the cake is dry none of that. I could recognize the care that was put into this cake. I visited Roesers, Swedish Bakery, Pierre's Bakery, Webers Bakery and Wolfs Bakery after reading the ratings here. Beverly Bakery won hands down for taste and moistness. I wish I had started here first right in my own neighborhood. read more
