My only negative is the buttercream filling was thicker than the cake itself -- wish there was more cake than frosting, but it wasn't overly sweet so no biggie. They made it exactly how the Inso picture was. Really appreciate how they advised me to lighten the color bc it would be too bitter and would oxidize. The cake was a little under $80! What can I say? I'm a frosting girl and Sweet Mandy B's is the best spot to get my fix! If you love buttercream like I do, you'll find many treats here that will be right up your alley! From frosted cookies, cupcakes, and even cake by the slice, they also sell pies (including by the slice), brownies, scones, and all kinds of other goodies. There's definitely something for everyone (With a sweet tooth) here. It's a great spot! This location in particular had a lot of seating, as well, and is also accessible from the Northwestern Med building or from the street! I especially loved the Cookie Monster cupcake. Rating is for service; Sweet Mandy B's is a Chicago classic for a reason, so my issue was with service only. It was a Sunday afternoon. There were maybe five employees. Most of them were lovely, but there was a tall dark-haired dude that honestly seemed to be bothering even his co-workers. He was brusque and frankly rude when I asked about a pastry, and was clearly mocking my group as we were being served. As if we couldn't hear him. One employee seemed completely checked out, which I understand since she had to deal with this guy. I would have disassociated, too. The person who rang me up seemed embarrassed, as this guy was clearly talking about me *at the register*. As we left he gave a really smarmy, insincere goodbye. Note, we were a small group of local women, all familiar with SMB's, not tourists. We were all weirded out by this guy. We came back home to Chicago to celebrate my birthday with our close friends. We called sweet Mandy B's to order a cake for our celebration. I tried the yellow cake, vanilla buttercream icing cupcake and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Cookie was a perfect blend of chocolate chips without overpowering the oatmeal. At first glance I thought it was a cupcake only come to see that there are a whole variety of delights here including this banana cream pie and their features cinnamon roll. Holding back on eating too much on this trip, we opted for the banana cream pie. Our gold standard is Leoda's on Maui to compare to. The cakes available for pickup were juvenile in their colors and decorations, with few flavor options. Underwhelmed, we opted to walk a block to Whole Foods, where the customer service was on point, the cake was decorated well, and it was delicious at a more reasonable price point. A Longtime Fan, but Lately... a Mixed Bag at Sweet Mandy B's I've been a loyal Sweet Mandy B's customer for more than five years. In that time, I've raved about their desserts to friends, hosted celebrations with their cakes, and considered them one of my go-to bakeries in the city. But over the last 12-18 months, something has shifted and the experience has become surprisingly hit or miss. The first indicator was a slice of their snickerdoodle cake that we tried several months ago. The cupcake had always been a favorite so we thought we would try the cake slice, but this time it arrived disappointingly dry. A few weeks later, we tried the banana cake slice, and it was a completely different story, moist, flavorful, and topped with a rich chocolate frosting that reminded me why I fell in love with Sweet Mandy B's in the first place. Their cupcakes were another longtime love of mine. However, they now come standard with sprinkles or chips on top. When I asked if I could get one without those toppings, I was told I'd need to place a custom order (which can't be done for a single cupcake). It felt surprisingly inflexible for such a small request. For a recent birthday, I ordered a yellow cake with chocolate icing. Unfortunately, it landed on the "miss" side of the spectrum, dry and crumbly. Thirteen guests tried it, and more than one commented that even a boxed mix would've tasted better. Lastly, we picked up the peanut butter Rice Krispies treats, a nostalgic favorite. These, too, were disappointing: stale, tough to cut, and ultimately left unfinished because no one enjoyed them. Bottom line: Sweet Mandy B's still has the ability to wow when they get it right. But the inconsistency in quality has become hard to overlook. Lovely local bakery that serves up classic american sweets. In terms of cupcakes, the cream cheese frosting on the carrot cupcake was a little too sweet. I really loved their confetti cupcakes and strawberry cupcakes though - they were moist, fresh, and their frostings were decadent yet balanced. Their rice krispie treat wasn't too good. It had the texture of a sponge and felt like eating a giant marshmallow instead of an actual rice krispie. The store is rather small, but they do have a few tables where you can stop by to enjoy your treats. We luckily came between rushes, so it was easy to find a spot. Sweet, sweet Mandy B's! I have found my new favorite cupcake in Chicago and can't believe I didn't visit sooner. The shop is super cute and pretty quiet inside. I arrived at a slow time, but near rush hour the crowds poured in. The staff was professional, friendly, and proactive about identifying dietary restrictions. There aren't as many cupcake varieties as Molly's, for example, as the shop focuses mostly on executing traditional flavors really, really well. However, they do have a rotating flavor of the month that is usually pretty interesting as well as many other sweet treats that I haven't tried. I ended up ordering the banana cupcakes with chocolate buttercream frosting, a snickerdoodle cupcake, and unfrosted cake tops as part of a Too Good to Go order. The latter was amazing- the confetti and banana cakes tasted just like pound cake, and were incredibly light and moist! I didn't miss the frosting at all, and wondered if its addition would be too sweet. However, the chocolate frosting on the banana cupcake was so creamy and light that it was extremely addicting! This is one of the best demonstrations of decadent-yet-light I have experienced. The cream cheese frosting on the snickerdoodle was rich and smooth, like the old-fashioned frosting that my grandmother used to make. Worked a charm, I quickly was loaded up with six cupcakes and scotcharoo cuts in a box for under five bucks via the app. They were so nice here too in their near indoor space! I loved it all, got to share chocolate, lemon, and guessing horchatta cupcakes with friends, great flavor and texture. Icing a bit mid for chocolate but tangy and full for the other two. Sweetness wonderland. The menu is so wide and the smells really hit you when you walk in the door. Really, there's almost too many things and reasons to come back. I've tried the rice krispy treat, rainbow sprinkle cookie, this banana bread pudding type of thing (see pictures), and the dream bar. I would recommend them all! You really can't go wrong. Fair warning, the stuff is really sweet (I guess that's where their name comes from). I usually split something with a friend or two because those flavors are too hard to resist. Feel free to ask the staff, they really know their sweets! One thing I'll highlight is the rice krispy treats. I usually don't gravitate towards them when I have a sweet craving - but one of my friends recommended them and I'm forever grateful. Give it a shot, trust me. read more

Like Stan's donuts, this is at the base of the Northwestern Medicine Lavin building so if you're a good boy or good girl at your doctor's appointment, you get a good report from the doctor, you have to treat yourself afterwards!
