Just went in for the first time the other day for a simple flat fix. I was helped almost immediately by one of the mechanics right at the door. The big thing for me was the extra minute that he took to lube my rusted chain, wipe down my dirt crusted frame, and top off my other tire. Simple things that other shops have neglected to do, but a huge reason why this will be my new regular shop. Prices seemed just a bit higher than I'd like, but I have no problem paying a little more for a nice place with friendly and helpful people. Edit: Downgrading after going a few times. I guess I got lucky the first time since the mechanic I had then seems to be the only one willing to help. A couple times nobody seemed to even notice I was there, and I've realized there are cheaper options in the area. This place is maybe just a bit too high end for me, and I'd rather give a smaller shop my business. read more

Amazing experience! I ordered a bike from Brooklyn Bicycle Company and my bike was sent here to be assembled and picked up. I called the store to make sure it was ready and the guy on the phone was beyond nice( I think his name was Dylan) . The kind of nice that makes you question how you're living your life haha. This is my bike shop. I bought my commuter Trek here last year and more times than I can count I've received great service from this location. I'm able to get my complimentary gear adjustments quickly and with no fuss, but they've fixed flats, improved bike security, and made necessary adjustments when my bike gets bumped by a delivery truck. Every person that works here is courteous and makes me feel like a regular. I'm so happy that of all the bikes I tried out at other shops I ended up buying here. read more

I had a great experience at this store. I brought in an old bike with gear problems, etc. for a tune up. Upon pick up I was told that they weren't able to do all of the things listed in the tune up - so they charged me less! The bike works so much better now, much smoother gear transitions, brakes tighter,etc. And the saleswoman helped me to pick out a non-expensive lock that makes sense based on the cost of my bike. If you live on this side of Park Slope try out the store. There was no elitist bike attitude and they were super honest and genuinely helpful. They seem to not push making a sale, but build relationships with customers. So a great bike shop, I'm going back for more accessories today! read more

I came in to Bicycle Habitat for a tune up of my bike that I use to commute to work, and to get some warm gear to ride in the winter. The gloves and face mask were expensive, but totally worth it, and I think actually standard for a bike shop. The tune up was excellent, and I had a nice chat with the gentleman that helped me. The first pair of gloves I bought were not as warm as I hoped, but I was allowed to exchange them lightly worn, for warmer ones. They also did a free brake adjustment about 2 weeks after my tune up because my brakes were squeaking. Over all good experience! read more

They take tremendous pride in helping thier customers out (I was in the store a bunch and watched the staff interact with a lot of people.) I went to Bicycle Habitat for the first time the other day and I was very impressed. A friend gave me an old used bike and I wasn't sure how road worthy it was. I told the guy I thought it needed two new tires and wanted to know how much it would cost to fix it up. After looking it over and fixing the gears, testing the brakes and putting air in the tires he said it was all good. When I asked him how much he said not to worry about it and I've been riding the bike and loving it! There is one place I am going back to get the rest of my supplies. These guys have amazing customer service. And for those of you who love your bike, but hate the attitude of a lot of people who work in shops, you know that means something. I was thinking of buying a bike at Bicycle Habitat, I put a deposit down and had them build it up. Along the way, I changed my mind, got another bike and just lost track of the deposit, figured I probably couldn't get it back especially since I wasn't buying the bike. A month passed but Pam called me personally to refund my deposit!! Unbelievable, definitely worth the 5 stars for the customer service. read more

Hi- Let me start out by saying that I'm one of those annoying guys who far too often likes to walk into a bike store with no intention of buying anything but to just look at the pretty bikes and ask a few informed questions. Needless to say, far too often bike shop people aren't very cool about this behavior. When they are and express a sincere interest in me, biking and appear to be honest as well as interesting- well they get my vote of confidence. At least that person does. So ask for Libby- she's 5 stars- and worth going here for. Hate to leave a bad review but it jives with other negative ones complaining about attitude and pricing so here goes. I showed up with my bike and asked the guy behind the counter if I could get a tune-up - a cleaning, check the gears, put air in the tires, etc. He told me "we don't do that." I thought that was strange and walked to another bike shop on 7th Avenue that turned out to be closed. Since the air was nearly out of the tires, I walked back to the store and asked a different person if I could get a tuneup. He told me yes, and that I could leave the bike and they'd call with a price. Days later, the store called and said in a message that it would be $163. The bike store that used to be on 9th Street and 6th Avenue used to charge $65 for this work. I called and the guy from the store said that they thought my bike needed the work done, but when I pressed for an explanation, his answer was incomprehensible to me. The gist was "this is really important for your bike but if you don't want to pay for it this isn't important and we can charge you just $50." I went to Dixon's Bicycle Shop on Union Street - they did the work for $70 (tax included) - they were pleasant, fast and the bike runs great. read more

I had an issue with a bike that I had bought there due to no fault of Bicycle Habitat. The staff was great and worked some magic with manufacturer to get me a new bike. I had called the manufacturer and they woudn't help me and said they had no plans to help anyone with the issue, in their mind it was fine. I can't recommend the service enough... read more

The three stars are mainly for the sales people in the store. You can approach them with any questions you have. And they approach you to see if you need help, but leave you free to browse. The store is spacious and has a nice selection of bikes--for ones you are looking at but not quite in the right size, they offer to put it together just so you can try it! They are knowledgeable about their products and suggest other bicycles that accommodate your criteria. My friend bought a bike, was given time to try it out and is very happy with it. I am planning on purchasing a bike for my girlfriend there. On the other hand, I did interact with one of the mechanics there. The bald, skinny guy (didn't catch his name). Spoke to sales person first (same one who has helped me while browsing bikes and a bicycle part) and explained that I was looking to swap out my handlebar. Seemed all right, only I guess their policy is not to quote a price or exact process of service, leaving it to the mechanics. The mechanic looked at it, said it would be a half hour job. He told me himself that the housing for the cables looked good, but still convinced me to change them all out--said it would require cutting and to re-thread the cables; charged me for the length of NEW cables (three of them) plus labor to remove and replace the handlebar. He definitely put on the sales pitch. I said fine, as this was the third shop I visited and wanted to get this done. $68 was the charge so I left my bike some time in the afternoon. A few hours later, I heard nothing from the store--no update. About an hour before closing, I called. He told me it wasn't ready. Then about 10 minutes before closing, I called and it still wasn't ready (again, a half hour job). So I decided to pick up my bike. Walked in, the mechanic (while working on another bike) mumbled it still wasn't ready. Repeat that.."not ready." When do you close, I asked? "Right now." So I took my bike from him. I think he said sorry. All in all, I feel he misrepresented his services. If it was going to take a day in the shop, I would have been satisfied if he had at least mentioned that, but his half hour estimate with at least a few hours before closing led me to believe my handlebar was going to be swapped out. Understandably the mechanics were busy, but this mechanic made it as if he could do it, no problem while counting on assuming I knew little about the mechanics of swapping out the handlebar and charging me as much as he could. The following day, I went to another shop. Dropped off my bike. Took a couple of hours before pick up. No empty promises were made, and they worked on my bike the SAME day. The mechanic told me I could keep the same cables on my bike--they just had to shorten them (also at my request, as they were long to begin with). That and it cost me half the price. This was the second time I went to this shop and was happy once again with their services and attention to my bike. *Note--Both visits were on the same (busy!) weekend shop days. read more

These dudes are awesome. My boyfriend and I bought three of our bikes here two years ago. We always get our bikes tuned here, get our gear, accessories, etc. I'm at this shop alot. Everyone who works here is very friendly and super helpful. I'm a dog walker and also own another small business on the other side of brooklyn. My bike is how i get around for my walks and get to my other business all year long. I can come here if i get a flat and theyll fix it within minutes, guaranteeing i wont miss my next walk. My bike got stolen today and when i came to the shop they were closing up. They didnt have time to sell me a bike so they let me BORROW one, knowing that I had to get around on Monday for work. Ill be going in to the shop tomorrow before I leave for North Brooklyn to order a new bicycle and get one of my old bikes fixed up so ill have a bike until the new one arrives. Seriously, I cant express on here my gratitude for these guys. Without them I wouldnt be able to get all my work done tomorrow. Thank you!!! read more

Started out our day swinging by Bicycle Habitat for some air and a bunch of safety items we've been meaning to pick up. Having worked in retail before it's hard to be "on" right when the door opens in the morning but they were super helpful and wished us well on our day of biking. Flash forward 8 hours and on the way home I hit a pot hole and my chain came off. Since we were almost right by Bicycle Habitat we stopped by again. You know after a long day when someone walks in right around closing it's always a bummer but all was set right in a few minutes with a smile. They even remembered after what I'm sure was a really long day that we had been in the shop that morning. We'll be going back for sure and hope out friends do too! read more

so i walk in because i want a simple tune-up and i get to listen to some snobby punk lambast my bicycle and gives me an estimate of $175 dollars, plus i have to wait a week for the right parts to be brought in. guess what bicycle habitat, i brought it up to 7th avenue and 12th st and they not only greeted me with kindness, (and no smug attitude), but they also fixed it up perfectly for $75 dollars (new parts and labor included) AND i had it back later that day. it runs perfectly now. fuck bicycle habitat, don't let their beautiful store fool you. i bet they need to cover a shit ton of rent and a bunch of pay checks for a bunch of guys to stand around ignoring their customers. For the record, A: I normally wont spend this amount of time unless I am pissed. B: My complaint is with sales, not service, those guys are awesome. So to set the mood, I am scheduled for a major operation in march, doc said I should get into some cardio and lose some weight so it is safer for me. She recommended to get a bike and ride to work. Fine, I go to bicycle habitat in park slope, I explain this to Emily. Also explain I am in retail sales in the automotive industry behind a giant name and was by no means a dummy. I knew going into this place I was going to pay more, but THOUGHT I would get the backing of the reputation like my company, LOL . Anyway after a few test rides, I landed on a Trek 7.5, put down a deposit and went back in a few days to pick it up. Being I do not have insurance for my operation, and have to pay out of pocket 26K I was trying to conserve my money. So this was a need not a want, I justified it. I went back in and decided to get the 7.2 as it was a bit cheaper. I am getting a few accessories to personalize my bike and to get the requirements by law. She becomes pushy, and I again explained I am being nice to her, back it up. I normally would pound someone in the ground on price, but thought if I am going to be going back for future sales and service, I better not be that kind of douche. Figure Ill get what I pay for. (Fast Forward) Christmas eve someone steals my bike, merry Christmas, So I go back, A little distraught and talk to Emily. They put my bike on the stolen bike register, thanks I guess, and needing a bike, I asked about the one I really wanted, she tells me 1200.00, OK no deal, and not in my range, I buy the 7.5 I originally put a deposit on, Getting my accessories I inquired about a bike computer, 110.00 with sensors, so no, I will defiantly have to wait, but will defiantly come back for it. I go to the bank to make my deposit and return to pick it up. I go back to pay, bill is 1130.00 I said how, should be roughly a thousand. She rattles off the items, and gets to computer, I said what the hell, I said I had to wait, she motions to the mechanic to not install it. I buy the bike and leave. That was eating at me for a few days. Not only did she not make me a deal, (not her or the shops fault it got stolen) but to slide a computer on the bill like I was stupid. I go back a few days later, I really wanted the purple one, I love purple, sue me. I ask again, she states 1,200.00 for the bike. Fine order it. I want it. I leave, and again its burning in the back of my brain, why did I over pay in a place like this, if they have NO customer loyalty. So I call Verrazano bike shop, explain the story, he is willing to give me the 7.6 for way less and doesn't know me form a can of paint. I go back, figure let me talk to a manager and see whats going on. I find out Emily is a manager, and threw my hands up. I returned the bike. Now she wants to talk price, lol we already did. So for her 1,305 bike and tax, I went to Verrazano bike shop, got my purple 7.6,+ upgraded aluminum pedals,+ upgraded seat, + water bottle holder, for 1,300 with all taxes. The kicker, the mechanic grabbed a water bottle and slid it in my holder as I was walking out. Save yourself the head ache, and just take the extra few minutes to go to Bay Ridge, those guys are awesome and actually care about their customers. read more

I had a very nice experience in Bicycle Habitat on 5th Ave. I wanted to buy one bike for me and one bike as a gift. I don't know anything about bikes and I feel guilty wasting the time of salespeople if I don't plan on buying anything that day. Uncharacteristically, I didn't do any research online before looking at bikes so I really knew nothing on the subject of bikes. A few weeks before entering Bicycle Habitat, I had gone to two bike stores in Bay Ridge, neither of which I liked: I'm not sure why striking a balance between pushy/agressive and jejune/disinterested is so hard for so many stores to attain. Bicycle Habitat I found just passing by. It is big and roomy. If you want to browse, that's fine with them. We were approached by one salesperson right away but were still getting adjusted to the store. Then we saw a bike and saw Pam and we told her we knew nothing about bikes and weren't buying them that day. She was very helpful asking us the kinds of basic questions no one else at other stores had asked such as what kind and extent of riding we intended. She also understood that gaining an education could take some time for a customer and she was willing to make the investment in us. That being said, I realized to myself because of her nice attitude and the great prices (Black Friday sale) it might, in fact, be a good day to buy the bikes. I didn't share that intention and asked Pam to fit us on various bikes. I had no idea that every brand has different sizes and even the bike I was looking at came in 6 or 7 sizes. It is essential to have a store that will take the time to fit you for bikes. I think Pam pulled close to a dozen bikes for us. At that point I had managed to tell Pam off to the side that I was going to buy the bikes but not to let on because it was going to be a gift. It is to her credit that she was able to go along with me during the secret slipping of credit card numbers and cell phone numbers and quick aside conversations---'can you hold the bikes here until I pick them up right before Christmas?' 'Sure, just call us the day before'---not everyone can play along and she caught on fast. When we found the two perfect bikes we left, Pam and I spoke later about logistics and then I emailed the store a few days before Christmas to pick up the bikes. Emily let me know by email that they would be ready. When I went in, I was taught how to release the front wheel and reattach it. Everyone I encountered in the stire was nice and patient and accomodatung and willing to invest their time in me. I really enjoyed the experience there. read more

I bought a bike there this Spring, and they price matched another store selling the same bike for $110 less (though that store didn't have it in stock). After my back break came loose, I took the bike in for an adjustment (completely free). Not only did the guy fix my breaks, he also checked and adjusted my gears, pedals, handlebars. He even fixed my back light, which had come loose. And all in about 20 mins while I waited. Amazing. read more

The good stuff: friendly and knowledgeable sales staff, wide-ranging choices of bikes to buy (not one but two brands of touring bikes on the floor), not to mention the usual accessories and lots of tools for the bike geeks like me who like to fix their own stuff. I paid for a fitting session with Libby and was very pleased with the results - they recommended a new seat ($30) and a couple of other things, all of which reduced my knee pain drastically and otherwise made the bike feel better. I also spent several weeks shopping for a new bike, test-riding a couple of candidates several times, and did not feel in the least bit pressured by staff. Even when I wasn't buying stuff, I often got lots of things for free from the mechanics - little parts, adjustments, some non-petroleum grease for my pump, etc. The mechanics do their work at the front of the store - you can watch everything they do - complete transparency. I have to give them credit for their willingness to do their work while the customer is watching. The not-as-good stuff: it can take a long time to buy something while staff puzzles over their computerized sales system. Sometimes, when they say they'll call you, they don't. Sometimes, after a repair, things aren't quite right, and it takes a few more tries to get it right. I've yet to meet a perfect bike shop - the ones I thought were perfect eventually disappointed me if I patronized them long enough - but this is as good as it gets. To the negative reviewers, if you think the store did you an injustice, I suggest you call the Manhattan store and ask for the owner, Charlie McCorkell - he's a guy who cares about his business, cares about his customers, supports local bike groups like Transportation Alternatives and Recycle-a-Bicycle, and will give you a straight answer. read more

Have always known this was in the area but went here yesterday to pick up some accessories for a decent trail bike my friend basically gave me. I got a nice lock, helmet and lights all of which are great. I was prepared for this place to be a little expensive but everything they have is really high quality and its just right down the street. I was hoping to get a little bit of help or recommendations but they sales people pretty much just vibed me, I guess maybe if I came in with a +$1000 carbon frame road bike I might have been treated a little more like the paying customer I was. All in all a great shop but I wouldn't say they go out of their way to avoid the snobby high end Park Slope bike shop stereotype that I had always assumed. I'll probably go back if I need something else in a pinch but I'll park the Diamondback around the corner next time. read more

I went here for the first time today because I got a vintage bike and wanted to see what adjustments / tuning it needed. From the moment I walked in the customer service was awesome. The store was crowded, but I was helped right away. One of the employees checked my bike for me and made some small adjustments to the front handle bars, seat and chain. It was super fast, and the best part about it is that it was all free. He then helped me pick the proper accessories for my bike and showed me how to put it on. Since the store has some pretty pricey bikes, I thought that I would have had to purchase one to get the level of service I did. That was definitely not the case. I am very happy with this store and will go there for all of my bike needs! read more
