I was referred to this shop to have an electric bike that needed a new brand of brake installed. When I came in they said sorry we have an email circulating from some organization group of dealers saying not to help people with bikes that were sold by Leckric. They said it was because Lectric didn't have insurance and they didn't want to be responsible. I called back the people doing the recall for them and asked questions from their insurance broker (Sedgwick) and they said they do have product liability insurance and they have paid out on and hand full of claims and that is why they have a voluntary caliper recall. They even shared the details of the 3-4 claims entailed, Maybe the woman I spoke with was at store was misinformed but I did get the feeling it was a bit of collusion among local bike shops to not help anyone that didn't buy their bike from them but we're specifically singling out Lectric whom I feel makes a pretty good e-bike. I have 3 of them over 4 years. I support any business to make the decision to refuse service but believe it is a short sighted decision. Don't you think I would share my experience with neighbors and friends in the area. Have you ever heard of a mechanic saying well I didn't sell you the Toyota so I am not going to repair it. OK so here is the good news and hopefully helpful to the others that had gone to the shop and told they are out of luck. Bottom line is I took it to another place in Vernon (Pedal Power) and they did it fast plus a tune up for 99 dollars.. Steve at Pedal Power is wonderful. I even asked him by phone if he was sure he would do it before I got in the car again. He said of course. We do repairs on bicycles and e-bikes. I could understand if they didn't have parts or we're not familiar with the electronics oven specific E bike, but this was just replacing a brake caliper and electric had sent me a brand new namebrand part. I would definitely go to pedal power as they stick by you even if you didn't purchase your bike from them. I will definitely buy anything bike related in the future from them because they see business as a long term relationship. I am sure they would even repair any bikes sold by bicycles East should they go out of business. Isn't that the way it should work? Electricians work on houses they didn't build, plumbers work on plumbing that they did not install, and again I'm all for companies, making a profit. Just decide what dollar value it is worth to do it and let the consumer choose whether or not it's too high or not. The first shop I gave 2 stars because he seemed to feel bad for my situation (Main Street in Glastonbury) but this place - Bicycle East - seem to feel vindicated that they would not do it.. Very Short sighted .. so that is why 1 star. I will save you from even having to search.. The vibe in the shop is not hard sell, they are open and honest and make good suggestions. I was so impressed with this place. I brought my (rather sullen) 11 year old in for a new bike. The staff was so kind and patient and he found a beautiful bike. I really appreciated their efforts and the price of a slightly-more-expensive bike is totally worth getting individual attention by someone who knows what they're doing. Also, my son is really a standard-issue fifth grade boy. But on the day we went in, his hair happened to be long and in a ponytail, and he had green nail polish on because of a summer camp activity. The woman who helped us was so gracious and sensitive in saying "All these bikes here are the same model. This one is a nice blue, here's a bright pink one," etc. She wasn't making any assumptions about what sort of thing he might want, and while he didn't care or pick up on it, I did. read more

I bought cycle shoes here about a year ago and recently started having some issues with my foot going numb while spinning. I took my shoes into he shop and the assistant and I believe one of the owners spent a good 15-20 minutes with me figuring out why that may be happening. I ended up getting some inserts for my shoes and haven't had a numb foot since. It was nice that even though I wasn't walking in to purchase a $1k+ bike I still got the same great service. I needed a new bike seat because my seat with a gel pad was cutting into me intolerably. I thought a wide, heavily cushioned seat would work best and I bought one on Amazon. When I found that the online seat would not install on my road bike, I called Bicycles East hoping that I could get a comfortable seat installed the same day. I was so pleased that not only did they have a seat for me that they installed on the spot but that Steve measured my frame scientifically to find the correct size and shape. Turns out I needed a very narrow, lightly padded seat with a cutout. I road it 22 miles 2 days later without a problem. read more

I bought two Giant E bikes here just a little over two years ago. Only one month past the first anniversary of the purchase, I brought my bikes in to have the annual checkup which I was told would be free (first checkup) I was told it was not free since even though the mileage was less than 100 miles on each of the two bikes (we traveled a lot without the bikes) I was not eligible for the free first tune-up because it was over a year from the purchase date, even though you can clearly see how many miles the e-bikes traveled and it was less than 100. 2 weeks after the tune up, the new chain on one falls off and is defective because the actual metal on one of the links has cracked. I am still having problems with this one bike, and need to find someone who can work on Giant e-bikes. Steve is also not easy to work with, and I do not want to go back to Bicycles East. read more

This is in my opinion, the best bicycle shop in central CT. The employees go above and beyond to help out with anything you need, and any questions you have. I recently purchased 2 bikes from them in early September, 2020. The pandemic has been brutal on cycling inventory. Nobody has bikes. My eta delivery dates were originally slated for Spring but were pushed far back towards November (no fault of the shop at all...every manufacturer and shop in the country is experiencing this) and Debbie from Bicycles East encouraged me to try and find these models anywhere because they wanted me to get them as soon as possible and there are uncertainties with changes the companies may make with bikes in the new model year. I felt bad because I wanted to give them my business but they assured me it is more important to get the specific models/trim I want as soon as possible due to the uncertainties during the pandemic. The care and honesty from Bicycles East is incredible. Even though my 2 bikes won't come from Bicycles East, I have numerous upgrades for my incoming bike that I set up with Bicycles East prior. Once it arrives, Bicycles East will be installing the parts. That's another thing: Bicycles East has one of the most impressive service areas I've ever seen in a shop. Years ago, when I was first looking for a mountain bike, I remember Steve giving me a tour of the shop and even set me up on 2 different models to try out back. This experience back in about 2017 has since stood out from other shops and that is why I choose them over others. Other shops are great too, but there is just something special about the experience at Bicycles East. We've also bought other accessories and an indoor trainer from the shop, which Steve took the time to show me how it operates and set it up for us. I will be getting all my service done on bikes here and any parts I need ordered here. And possibly down the road, maybe even buy a drool worthy Seven Cycles titanium hardtail in the future. I purchased a bike from their website said "in stock ". When I received a email confirmation it told me bike may not be built yet to call and confirm via phone. After doing so I was told my bike would NOT BE READY FOR A WEEK. I inquired about the "in stock " on website and STEVE the owner told me that they're website is Not set up for COVID times . Which is a lie the website does mention COVID safety precautions and curb side pick up . Not a word about after you purchase a "in stock" bike it may take week minimum to be prepared . I wait the week and drive to pick up the bike . STEVE puts the bike outside on a bike stand and hands me are receipt and walks back into the store. After inspected the bike with my brother we noticed the wheel was wobbling , chain was having issues changing into gears, the grips and pedals were NOT the color as seen on his website and Treks website ,and the final straw was the breaks on the bike did not work ( meaning when you pulled the breaks it slowly stopped) . Who buys a new bike that the breaks don't even stop the bike . This was a disappointment from the day I received my email confirmation. STEVE Is taking advantage of the demand in bikes in the tri state area during these hard times . He's just rushing bikes out that are NOT BUILT TO TREK BIKE COMPANIES STANDARDS. I've shopped in many bike stores over the past 25 years, and I have never received anywhere close to the same level of amazing customer service as I do at Bicycles East! The staff is extremely friendly, very knowledgeable, and never ever try to upsell me on anything. They ask questions to see what my goals and intentions are, and then they sell me a high-quality product that meets my objectives, all for a reasonable price. Their trade-up policy for children's bikes saved me probably a few hundred dollars cumulatively over all the years when my children were growing up and we'd buy new bikes for them every 2 or 3 years. And Steve (the co-owner with his wife Deb) is a master fit specialist. Early on in my cycling years, I bought a bike from a different shop who just "eye-balled" the fit of the bike for me. I quickly started developing knee pain on long rides (50+ miles), and I couldn't understand why. Since I was new to the sport, I thought that's just what happens on long rides. Luckily I discovered Bicycles East, and after Steve did a proper fitting, we determined that my frame was too big for me. I didn't have enough money to buy a new bike at that point, so Steve made a few adjustments. My knees never hurt afterwards! It's been over 15 years since then, and Steve, Deb, and their entire crew have helped me and my family numerous times in deciding what bikes to buy and what gear to get. They gave great customer service and got my son sized properly and into a new bike that was reasonably priced and an appropriate model for his amount of usage. While I was there, I interacted with three employees who were all very attentive, knowledgeable and polite. I would highly recommend this shop especially if you have children, their trade up program is terrific! We walked in knowing we would need to get some help with assuring proper for for helmets. The kids were so excited about the store itself so bright and open and having so many models of bikes! My bike was having issues, and having no car at the time, it was my only way of getting to work. They were extremely understanding of my situation, and even went as far as repairing my bike the same day I brought it in (note I had called one day in advance and scheduled an appointment). They did a good job and I was out within two hours. Not bad at all for such a major repair. Price was fair as well. Another bike shop told me it would take a couple of days, haha. Ok, so I'm not young or very athletic...been working at a desk for more years than I care to remember. But now I am retired and looking for both a non-impact form of excersize and transportation when I'm out using the RV. I have been here a few times for minor accessories and service. I am a highly experienced rider with pretty much older equipment. I have never bought anything expensive here. The level of knowledge and service by the owner is great. He was knowledgeable about older expensive bikes and he focused on service and resolving issues instead of trying to sell new equipment. Most bike shops in the area use "kids" that try to sell you new top dollar bikes and hope to get you out the door before the ink dries on your credit card signature. I had been a loyal Wethersfield Bicycle (old bike shop that closed a long time ago) customer who bought very expensive bikes from them. Deb and her store are awesome! I am 62, retired and decided what better time to get back on a bike. Well, it isn't like the old days where you found a 26" bike, hopped on and rode off...done. My friend and I had no idea what we were doing, but Deb very patiently asked questions, listened then made a suggestion. Many measurements later we were on our way...or so we thought. Long story short...we weren't comfortable...my toes barely hit the ground and my friend didn't like the reach of the handlebars...so 3 days later, back we went and Deb was there to ask more questions, take more measurements and finally suggest a change of bikes and not even a more expensive model! What shop doesn't try and talk you into keeping what you bought, especially when so much time went into the sale or up sell you on an exchange? Then I bought a Thule bike rack. Nice, and it did what I asked for. But when I got home I learned there was another model I thought would better suit me...more expensive but fewer straps, it locked, much easier to install, etc. The next morning..."Deb, can I exchange it?" "Sure, come on in." I am so pleased!!! I feel like a very pampered consumer. My needs truly did come first and you can't say that very often these days. read more

Unfortunately my experience was not as positive as the other reviewer. I brought my bicycle in for repair - true a wheel and replace a broken chain. Steve the owner, was not able to true the wheel because he said the spokes were "frozen" however he still charged me the full price for the truing that he could not complete. He then told me I probably would need to replace the rear cassette (gears) in addition to the chain since they wear together. He showed me one and i agreed to it based on his suggestion. When I picked up the bike he didn't put the new casette on and told me it wasn't needed and that it was a good thing because the replacement cassette would not fit on my bike. The new chain seemed to work fine with my old casette. I went for a ride today and it worked fine - no slipping. I felt that had the replacement casette fit, it would have been installed whether the old one worked or not and I would have been charged for the new part plus the labor involved with it's installation. To make matters worse, I noticed a large scratch on one of the main tubes on the frame of my bike. I hadn't noticed it before but i couldn't be sure so i didn't say anything. My main gripe was being charged for the incomplete truing and the feeling that I almost replaced a part that was not necessary, to the tune of $46. + labor, based upon Steve's recommendation. In my opinion bicycle shops make their reputation on their service - this one fell short. read more
