I'm not sure if Fu Wah's banh mis are the most authentic or if people who grew up eating these sandwiches would like the ones here, but I certainly like them. I always order the chargrilled pork sandwich. The meat is what I like about the banh mi most. It has a smoky, sweet, savory flavor, and the meat is always juicy, and somewhat fatty. Idk it just tastes good to me! The Vietnamese mayo spread is also creamy and decadent (I sometimes actually sometimes ask for extra on the side LOL), and the crisp pickled veggies add some sourness and tang. They also fill the sandwich with a good amount of cilantro and spicy jalapeno slices that are always seasoned with black pepper! If you eat the sandwich fresh, the bread has the right amount of crustiness for my personal liking. For context, in general, I kinda like banh mi bread when it's on the crustier, more baguette-y side because... I just prefer that kind of bread for banh mis (as opposed to super soft roll-like bread). But if you let the sandwich sit too long before eating, and the sandwich gets cold, the bread can get reallyyyy hard... Like... scraping-the-roof-of-your-mouth level of hard... So I docked points off there! One of the biggest pros, though, is the convenience of this spot! I can call in an order, pick it up ten minutes later, and enjoy! First, I got so sick after eating a hoagie here - had food poisoning for 3 days. Obviously, I thought it was a fluke since I didn't have any issues for the past 4 years. I went back as usual, but strike 2 - I found some strands of short, grey animal fur on my meat! Ok, but I've been coming here for years and never had an issue, so it still must be a fluke. I was craving a good vegetarian sandwich and after some serious googling, I stumbled upon this place. I kept seeing people sing praises about the Tofu Banh-mi hoagie sandwich. So I decided to check it out. It is a very unassuming little deli. And they're cash only. So, bring cash if you don't want to pay $1.50 to use the ATM in the store. I went in and placed my order of the Banh mi tofu hoagie at the counter and the guy didn't take my money then, so I wandered around the little market and waited for the sandwich crafter to make me mine. Ten minutes later, my sandwich was all wrapped and ready to go. So I paid for it and was on my way. When I got home and tried it. It blew my mind. The tofu was so flavorful and all the ingredients worked so well together and was a party in my mouth. I gobbled up my whole sandwich and was sad that it was over. All this deliciousness for $5. For a mini mart, this place has it going on. You can find some amazing speciality items like organics and plant based items. I especially like the little Korean bean cakes and tofu hoagies. The hoagies are FuWah's own spin on a Vietnamese hoagie: marinated tofu, cilantro, shredded carrots, and jalapeños on a torpedo roll. They are a neighborhood classic. They have an actual grocery scanner now (no ghetto cash register). They carry everything.. for such a small quaint convenience store. After walking in, we weren't even sure where to look for banh mi (above the cashier). I ordered classic pork with pate, and my wife ordered roasted pork.
