Lousiest-customer-service-EVER Central!!! I ask a manager if I can get some assistance in one of the isles, he says "someone will be with you in a second" - guess what - nothing! After 15 minutes I give up and help myself. I picked out about $300 worth of products and asked one of the employees if I can put the stuff on the counter because I wasn't done shopping - the lady says ok, takes the stuff and I go to get a few more items. I come back, and ALL of the stuff I wanted to buy was placed back on the shelves!!!!!!! Worth mentioning is that I wasn't hidden somewhere in the corner for hours, it took me 10-15 minutes and I was walking through the store so the employees saw me still getting stuff. And the cashier lady says, "Oh, oops..." and turns her back to move on!!!!!! Why indeed is this place still in business??????? read more

The customer service here is the ABSOLUTE WORST. I went in here a couple weeks ago looking for "turf cleats" or "indoor soccer shoes," and nobody was helpful at all. We searched ourselves, and then finally someone helped us. And directed us to REGULAR cleats. When I explained what I was looking for, she said 'hold on,' and went back in the back & got kids indoor cleats, which is fine, I have small feet. But when I said, 'so this is what I need?' the girl said 'i don't know, i guess.' And so I tried them on, asked if she had a different size, and then she took the ones out of my hands and put them back. When I said 'oh, can I have those back?' she said 'oh you handed them to me, so I didn't think you wanted them.' When, in fact, she GRABBED THEM OUT OF MY HANDS. Anyway, since she wasn't sure that this was what I needed, despite my googling, my fiance and I looked around the store, where I saw two managers (they appeared to be managers, as they had keys around their necks) unloading merchandise. I purposefully made a bit of a show of looking for the "cleats" (Hmmm... I don't think they have them, I don' think these are them, do you see them? Huh. I guess I'll just have to go to Sports Authority, maybe they'll know what they are...). I did this in the hopes that as managers, and as customer service representatives, they would try to help me. But, alas, that is not what happened. No, what happened is this: they completely ignored me and my fiance. AND THEN, as we were leaving, the heavy-set latina manager with curly hair went up to the cash register and made a face to the cashier, and followed me with her eyes. I KNOW THIS LOOK, as I do it to my mom/etc. when I want that person to LOOK AT SOMETHING. Basically, not only did the manager NOT HELP ME, she also got the attention of her coworker to talk about me in a negative fashion. The cashier looked up at me through the exit, and looked back at the manager and said 'what?' Way to be subtle, manager. It was KIND of ridiculous, and incredibly rude. Wait until I'm out of the store. Long story short--don't shop here. They have terrible service. Do yourself a favor and head on down to Sports Authority where someone might actually be able to help you. And, at the very least, you won't be insulted by a manager. read more

Wow, I did not expect to see such terrible reviews! I've lived in Burbank my whole life, shopped here a million times, and have never had a bad experience. I usually come here for camping supplies, tent, lantern, batteries, sleeping bags...etc. When its pool season for floaties and I Winter for snow gear. The staff is always helpful and friendly. I always find what I need as well. Don't expect a giant selection of anything though because the store is small. If you want a large selection of items trek it out to Bass Pro Shop. read more

I stood there in line to pay. A guy was in front of me making a purchase, I thought to myself, since I'm buying just some tennis balls, this'll be fast and since I have a game to go to, was sort of in a hurry. The girl cashier was talking to the guy in front of me, they obviously know each other. So they've been chatting and yapping about whatever, taking their time, completely ignoring me standing there. There's this other guy behind the counter as well, doing nothing, saying nothing and seeing there's another available register, how about ringing me up, since obviously these two in front of me, talking about moonshine, don't seem to realize that I wanted to pay for my freaking tennis balls! I've been shopping for new pants most of the day and complete forgot about something I have worn since 2002...my BOOTS. I have been wearing boots since 2002 for some reason. I have gone through five-six boots since then and I wanted to buy a pair boots for my reserve. Yes, I keep spare boots...but they have to be brand new because a lot of events do come my way. I believe I already wrote to Big 5 for Van Nuys. So, I was contemplating going to Mission Hills or Burbank. I've been all over the valley and I think I should head east. This Big 5 is located on North Victory Blvd close to the Magnolia Intersection. When I arrived, there were a lot of customers for some reason. I wasn't aware of any major sale. However, I did notice a lot of people in their cars as well. It was quite warm outside today and not sure why they were staying in their car. As I was walking to the front entrance, I noticed this big, tall African American guy in the front entrance. I believe he was either the General Manager or Asst GMs because when I walked in, he started shouting orders to his subordinates as if it were a military operation. I like this guy...More on him a bit later. I walked to the back of the store and I already found my Response Gear Tactical Footwear Boots Size 13 ($29.99). They always have just ONE left. Its like I am the only customer. They have plenty of 8.5, 10 and 12s, but always just ONE 13. I think Big 5 knows that I am their only demographic for boots. As I was about to checkout, I heard the GM's voice orders to organize and remove the dolly. I swear he probably was in the armed forces. Also, I think he was frustrated with the new girl at the counter. The girl kept making mistakes with the discounts and other computer related stuff. With all his frustration, he sat down on one of the boxes at the entrance and just covered his face. Well, I don't blame him for micromanaging the store. He just wants to secure his job. My total was $31.09. Well, my shopping day is over. The one thing I forgot to do is check on my car for the work week. What did I spend today? About $168-$170. I bought a cup a week ago and the cap broke. I wanted to switch out the lid. The women at the cash register had a horrible attitude. She was very rude and just not willing to exchange the lid. Big 5 gets a raw deal, mostly deserved but the one in Burbank is a step above the rest. It's larger and better oganized then any other I've been to. And I've been to a few because I like camping gear and good deals. Tents, sleeping bags and lanterns are priced for the casual car camper. Last time here I scored a bitch'in pair of hiking boots for under $60. They have name brand running shoes like Raybok, Adonis and Nearkee for less. Errr... Reebok, Addias and Nike. *Blush* read more

Big 5 is one of those hold-overs for inexpensive shotguns, rifles, and ammo for people who prefer to not shop at all places Wal-Martized. This being said, it most closely resembles a "warehouse" style sporting goods store where last year's products go. That is not a bad thing. These are sporting goods folks and last year's compression t-shirt is the same as this year's. It's also a good place to bargain hunt for shoes including decent hiking hoofers for those of you who like to trek lightly. This particular representative of the chain is better than the others I've seen in nearby cities that are really just two star joints. It is reasonably well-organized and the staff is helpful and available compared to others. Did I mention it covered winter sports, running, baseball, and boxing reasonably well? Well I just did. If you're looking for protective gear like pads and cups and what-not, the McDavid's and others are in the house, though if you're looking for more variety in names there's a Sport Chalet up the street calling your name. read more

Terrible customer service. My boyfriend and I went to look at a shotgun and the hunting dept was busy so we waited our turn. No one acknowledged us, but I listened to the employee "help" the other customers. One young guy didn't seem to know too much about ammo and kept asking for prices on different boxes. He asked several times to confirm the price for the boxes with the employee and eventually when the guy said "so this box is this much but this box is this much?" the employee turned to him and said "no" and rolled his eyes. Another interaction with a different employee: the older gentleman points to a box of ammo and asks the price. The employee hands him a different box and says that its "10 for 10." The customer then asks "what about the winchester brand?" And the emplyoyee says that it's 15 for 10. It seemed like the employee was intentionally trying to sell the more expensive ammo that the customer didn't even ask for! As for us, the employee never asked if we needed help but eventually he was close enough for us to ask him "which gun is that?" about a gun with the tag backwards. He looks at it and says "its a Mossberg" without turning the tag around. So my boyfriend asks "well how much is it?" so the employee turns around the tag to show the price, revealing it to be on sale, cheaper than anywhere else we'd seen. The employee said nothing more but began chatting with someone he knew who had walked in. After waiting without being acknowledged we decided to leave and and spend our money somewhere our patronage was appreciated, even if it meant spending more money. read more

I think with all the large sporting goods and specialty stores and even the fact that other stores sell sporting type items.... Big 5 gets overlooked. I had to learn from trial and error and not being able to find what I needed at a reasonable price... Go to Big 5 first! There were more than a few times I went the the larger local sporting goods place and was not able to find what I was looking for, or the price was way more than I had planned to pay. I ended up at Big 5, found exactly what I wanted for a reasonable price.s They have really good sales too, so check out there advertised specials. The staff is friendly and helpful too. read more

As the big box sporting goods stores sadly begin to permanently close their doors (Sport Chalet, Sport Authority).. this chain/location is reliably remaining open. Going into the store is a bit overwhelming because the store is filled with a lot of stock.. with different departments very close to each other. It's a bit of a maze.. but pretty much everything is there. My only issue was the wait at the cashier. The one cashier that was open was busy with a customer that needed multiple transactions. It took a few minutes for a backup to open. The queue of 3 quickly became 6. But once a backup cashier opened, the line went by and transaction completed. I was asked a few times while I was there if I needed any assistance. I appreciate that the employees are so attentive. I really hope this store doesn't fall like the other chains. I grew up knowing Big 5 as the only sporting goods store I needed. read more

The Kids soccer season is on it's way and this is where I go to get their Material from. This particular location is very close to my which makes it very easy to get in and out. They have a very large private parking lot with lot's of space. This particular location dose a lot of sales since it's so close to other businesses therefore you get a better deal for your money. Most of the time they carry all the seasonal material, from Winter to fall. As far as I remember the same staff has been working here for years, and they are well trained and friendly. If you are an outdoor kind a person who likes to go to range, they have the best price on pallet rifles. The only negative would be that they don't open till 10am and a early bird like me can't take advantage of beating the line. read more

The staff was fantastic, 2 of the gentle man both eager to find my son the right racket for tennis. They have a large selection so they went thru the differences with us. The only reason I gave 4 stars was because their prices are pretty high compared to what can be found on there net. Of course, we needed the racket the next day so we bought, but if they can make things a little more affordable I believe business would drive up. read more

Man, this place was busy when I went! I don't know if it was the rain, but a lot of people needed new shoes. I was able to find a nice pair od running shoes, on sale, but the sales reps didn't really know where to get their items. For example, the first pair I tried where on sale and when I asked for my size, the rep couldn't find them. Lo and behold, since they were on sale, they were all located on the shelf behind me so my wonderful boyfriend found my size. We didn't stay too long, but I did browse the workout clothes area and was kinda stunned that workout pants, plain black ones, were $20. I have noticed that there were no greetings at all when I visited several Big 5's including this one. Somehow I guess this is not part of their customer service training to their employees? I have no clue on that. Staff members are ok if you approach them and ask them questions. The one guy in the back by the shoes section was actually quite friendly and was willing to offer help to me. With that, I gave him 5 stars individually. At the front cashier's counter, I felt like I was at Ross or TJ MAXX type of situation. You will just have to wait until you are being served. How long do you have to wait for them to respond? Unknown. For my case, I was standing there for at least a minute or two before a young lady who would offer help so I can pay and get going. So I have to only give a 3-star review for my overall experience there. read more

Balls.... Golf Balls... I have no knowledge of anything golf related, but it is that time of year and my Secret Santa at work requested "golf related items" for his gift wish list. Our limit was $40... I figured... I'd buy a giant bucket of golf balls and a few other cool golf accessories...but I didnt realize how expensive those tiny little suckers are... I asked for two boxes, they gave me two boxes, both the same size and color and brand. One was the wrong caliber. I should have double checked, but so should have the salesman. Went into this location looking to return an item that was under $20 I had bought less than a week ago. Unfortunately I didn't have my receipt nor tag on item. I knew they were going to not be able to return it but I was satisfied with store credit since I was going to make a larger purchase within the same transaction. I'm not upset about the store policy but what I am upset about is the way the associate handled the situation. This lady NATALIE who worked here for 10 plus years not a manager but an associate was rude and blatantly just said no with no other solution and was not willing to help me under any circumstance. The store manger was willing to give me a store credit since I was buying more items. This Natalie girl in front of customers was talking shit about the situation exaggerating of course and I caught her taking shit and she of course immediately got silent. How professional is she with her 10 plus years of experience?! And she was training someone I still walked out with buying more than I returned and she helped me in silence and all was good. Thanks to the manager who had some sense in him I was able to complete my transaction. This place sucks in customer service so if you're looking to return exchange or get store credit make sure you go in ready to argue! Terrible customer service. Product I bought I the store failed after two months. Shift manager refused to exchange it, citing their corporate return policy. Never mind that I wasn't returning the product, and the manufacturer told me to take it back for an exchange. Do business with more reputable companies, dare I say it, like Walmart. Paid for a rifle that was on sale today, quick process, 25 minutes. At first when I asked to purchase the gun, the manager who helped me seemed a bit annoyed. However he was pretty helpful, made the process easy and gave me good advice on the gun. Went in to pick up my gun, they were busy but I was in and out in 10 minutes. Manager was helpful, their ammo variety/price is also pretty competitive with other gun shops in the area. I could see myself purchasing another rifle from here and I will definitely keep buying ammo from here. read more

I went to Big 5 about a week ago to buy a new pair of running shoes. I have very flat and wide feet so it's often hard to find a pair that won't make my feet cramp once I've been running for about a mile. I found a pair of shoes and I specifically asked the guy who got them for me if i would be able to return them if they made my feet cramp after trying them out once for a run on the treadmill. I was told this would be no problem. After trying them out for a run on the treadmill they were too narrow for my feet. I put them back in the bag I purchased them in along with the tag and the receipt and took them to the store to return them today. When I got to the store and spoke with the manager he said he could not except them because they were too worn and he wouldn't be able to resell them. I told him about the conversation that I had with the sales person a week prior and he basically just shrugged his shoulders at me and said I can't resell them. I will not be returning here for any business and I suggest others do not as well. Do not honor their word to the customer and now I'm stuck with a pair of shoes that does me no good. read more
