We come here a lot. Two kids, multiple spots, yada yada. Customer service is hit or miss. Getting shoes is always challenging because you have to "bother" the employees too help. Prepare for an eye roll If you need a different size. Returns are hassle free. They usually have what we need for cheap. Now here is the situation that prompted me to write a review: I was returning something the other day and a nice young lady was helping me at the register. Note...I have always noticed the somewhat douchy white manager types but never had a close encounter. Until now. As she was giving me cash back, she says to one of the douchy white manager types, "I need ones". Ok, so we can all agree that she was in need of more one dollar bills right? So guess what douchy white manager says? You'll never guess. He says, "I think I saw a couple JUANS working at the carwash next door....Oh! You meant ONES!! (Insert douchy laugh here). What a prick. Keep your weak, one liner, racist jokes to yourself. I should have said something, but he was too stupid to bother with. This will not stop me from going back here, but will encourage me to see what these dorks are up to, and yelp additional shenanigans. read more

Pure laziness is what this store is . I'm so upset at the attitude by the staff especially the one Hispanic female at the front with red/brown hair. If you don't like your job then say that . Don't go around giving people attitude because you're upset. And the disregard of the manager on duty, I get it's busy but show your customers some respect. I love Big 5 because they have such great prices. Sports Authority and Sports Chalet are significantly more expensive but they also tend to carry higher-end brands. Big 5 is great for when you know exactly what you want. Their employees are friendly and helpful. I think it's a great place to start for anyone who is just beginning a sport. You don't need to get the fanciest or latest gear right off the bat. read more

Purchased a clothing item here that was sold with no tag. After paying and bringing it home, I discovered that the item did not fit. Rather than requesting a refund I went in to exchange for a larger size. The manager came out and was rude to me and then stated that he had to "check the camera in order to make sure that what I said was true". AWKWARD! He then returned to the register and discovered that YES, i was telling the truth but the experience put me off so much that I simply requested a refund. I will never shop here again! The reason that they got a one star was because there simply were no lower stars to give; not even a half of a one star would have been my ultimate post for these creeps. Came here the week before Memorial Day to get all new camping gear! And by new, I mean I didn't have any... so I guess you could say it would be my FIRST camping gear... Not all new! Anyway, I came here for: a 5 person tent, tarp, sleeping bag, air mattress and pump, lantern, and other random camping things... Needless to say I was very happy! They sent out a specials flyer that my girlfriend got a'hold of, and it had all of the big items I needed... ON SALE. Not only that, I went onto their facebook page and got an additional 10% off on sale items coupon and 20% off of regular items! I bet regular prices would have been easily over $200 for everything I bought, but thanks to all these deals, I only paid $140!!! I check out big 5's daily deals often and today I saw some cargo shorts that I was interested in.At about 1pm I entered their store at pch and Ximemo in long beach. I couldn't find the shorts so i asked the cashier where they were and showed her the ad on my phone. She pointed to the back and said "they're in camping" I asked if they had a sign on them and her response was "they should". So I went to look, no sign , no shorts with the brand name in the ad nothing with a price advertised, I continued to look till a young man with a big 5 shirt came along so I asked him about the shorts but he wasn't much help, I had showed him the ad with the brand and price thinking that would help. He then proceeded to show me some shorts and asked ME if I thought they were the ones I was looking forhe asked ME!!! He then told me the girls up front take of the clothes,I assume he was referring to the cashier I had just spoke to but was told she can't leave the front at that point I was done! Oh if only I could leave zero stars... I don't like writing negative reviews, I'd much rather forget those pesky bad experiences and go on about my day. But today, after a two-hour softball practice and a relaxing Sunday at home with my girls, I'm still peeved at what happened early this morning. I left home early to run a few errands before practice, mainly a haircut and to purchase new turf shoes and batting gloves. I opted to go to Big 5 because it's right next door to Supercuts. When I approached the door (at 9:05) I was met with a locked door even though their posted hours say they open at 9 on Saturdays. No biggie, I'll do the haircut first. Half an hour later I pull on the door again, and it's still locked. This time I tug a little harder...maybe I'm missing something. Then I peek in to see an employee behind the counter, who glances over at me just long enough to sneer and then turn away. And that's when I left. At that point it was 40 minutes after their posted hours said they were open and the only form of explanation they could muster was a dirty look... I took my business down the street to Sports Chalet. Not only did they lose my business for today (which ended up around $100 with the new shoes, some balls and gloves) but any future business as well, as I will never set foot in that dump again. read more

I've written less than 5 reviews in my entire life, so you have to really bomb for me to bother doing this. Went in looking for a pellet + bb pistol. Stood at the weapons counter for nearly 15 mins with no acknowledgement, and several employees made eye contact so I know they were aware. Finally got some help, from a girl who knew NOTHING about any of the guns. Of the 20+ models displayed, she said only one was a pellet gun, the rest were BB. Still not convinced, but I said I'd take the pellet gun. Now told the display is last one in stock, and the mag clip was MIA. While she kept looking in drawers for the clip, I noticed another model that said "pellet gun". Excuse me, this one says it's a pellet gun. "Oh". I had to figure it all out on my own while she impatiently watched. Ok, I'll take this OTHER one, priced at $130. Since I was told it didn't shoot BBs as well, I also purchased a Daisy BB pistol. (Also had to get display model since only one left). And the Daisy pistol didn't have any of its literature with the box. They "misplaced" that as well. Probably with the missing clip, I assume. So almost $200 later I get home only to discover that the Sig Sauer pellet actually does shoot both. I didn't need the Daisy pistol. I've never experienced such complete lack of knowledge, and when dealing with weapons (so to speak) that's a really poor way of doing business. Straight up dangerous. read more

Small and crowded, yet understocked when compared to Sport Chalet and the big sporting goods store at Marina Pacifica. Employee was helpful when I needed to find wrist guards, but there was no way I would have found them on my own. There's too much stuff in too little space. The employee stood there and told me I could only buy a combo back with wrist guards and knee pads, right as I was staring at some wrist guards in a solo back. WTF? Lucky for him that combo pack was on sale and cheaper anyway. When we checked out, some burly dude was standing behind the petite lady cashier with his arms crossed the entire time. He was perhaps the manager, but definitely that creepy kind. Maybe he was waiting for her to make a mistake, but his posture did not inspire confidence. Poor Big 5. This Big 5 as alway been a go to for me when I need something quick: a pair of gym shorts, an EZ up, a cup, a mouth guard or a pair of training shoes. They have a good selection of equipment and brands, and their prices are competitive because they carry close-out bargains. Their hours are good and their employees are friendly. Some of the customers are jack-holes, which is a turn-off, but this is LA, so what can you do? Check their flyers and website for deals and coupons, and you will be hard-pressed to find better deals. read more

hmmm....Big 5 is missing something here....I have to say that i agree with most other yelpers on this store as far as the downsides and there are not many upsides. Even though it's very close to me (maybe a 3-5 min walk) I will not shop here any more. If you are a runner, do yourself a favor and buy some really good shoes down in Belmont Shore at The Runners High. They truly give you unparalleled attention and information to make for a supreme purchase you will appreciate for a while to come! so back to this Big 5 - It's just way too congested....sales people are mia and the general organization and efficiency of store is sorely lacking. All together it's got a dark, dismal, dreery vibe here but the real kicker is the fact that on the few occasions I have gone here I noticed that the girls at the cash register have no customer service skills whatsoever. I am not sure they even understand that cleavage and tight clothes do not a quality interaction make. I mean I actually came to register with my purchases and she never said 1 word to me; started ringing up my items and kept talking to her other co-worker. Completely ignored me and then gave me the total. Huh??????? Came here for an air mattress, nothing fancy. My wife and I saw one on sale that had the same name on the price label as the box. It was only $24.99 so my wife and I bring it up to pay. The lady tells us it's not on sale, so I go check the pricing label with an Asian/Mexican guy working there and we confirm that the names match. In a very monotone/lazy voice he tells me it's "not for that air mattress, it's for the other one with the matching price." I told him okay and they should change the label. He then argues saying that it's right because the prices match on the label for the product. I tell him all they have to do is change the name; it's labeled wrong. He then tried to match the label item # with the box and couldn't even find the correct product... I was going to just buy another one that was on sale and just let them fix the signage, but the guy was so persistent on it being correct. I've worked in retail and management. If it's signed wrong and there are a lot of products under the label, the store has to honor what's advertised until changed. I wasn't really upset about the price, it was just the attitude of the worker.... If you happen to come shop here, don't let the short guy help you. read more

I took my 2 year old son to this Big 5 location to find a scooter helmet. We walked into the store and headed towards the helmets. They all appeared to be baseball helmets. After looking for someone to help me, a young lady finally asked if I needed help. I said yes and she walked away. After waiting 7 -10 minutes patiently, I heard a PA call requesting service in the shoe department. I figured that was for me as I was sitting in the shoe department which was right next to the baseball helmets. After waiting for what seems to be another 10 minutes I was ready to leave. I then see a guy with a store badge walk across from me and then quickly darts out of site. I said excuse me, I need help. I then said didn't you hear the PA requesting help. He said YES. So I guess he chose to ignore me intentionally. I then said well this may not be your department but I'm looking for a childs helmet for a scooter. He escorts me to the front of the store where there were more helmets but then quickly dissapears again. Now I have no clue how the helmet should fit my son's head so I didn't know what size to get him. Frustrated, I asked for a manager to complain about the customer service and although she apologized, I was hoping she would have at least tried to help me or find someone else to help me with my questions. I've been to this Big 5 numerous times over the years. Honestly, what has kept me coming back was the availability of coupons (why not save money on a purchase you already intend on making?) & proximity to my house. However, I recently purchased a ping pong table for my son's birthday present. As it was one of the least expensive ones they had, I inquired as to whether it was a decent one... it would be stored in my garage, but I still wanted it to last. The salesman that day said yes, it should be fine as long as it wasn't kept outdoors. Fast forward approximately 3 days later when my husband was able to assemble the table. The screws attaching the brackets on the underside split the particle board beyond repair in multiple spots once the table was folded, as shown in the instructions. As he then re-opened the table, more screws fell onto the floor. Ok, clearly, this was a cheap table & not worth the $, even on sale. And, yes, instructions were followed to a T with proper tools, etc. So, I call and ask to speak to a manager, who identified herself as SARAH. I explained to her that the table was faulty, & I needed to return it but I am weak as I am ill and am in chemo, & I needed to find assistance to load it into a truck and bring it back as I cannot do any lifting. She said not a problem, bring it in with the receipt when I can. So, today I had assistance available to load & transport the table. When I get to the store, Sarah is there but hardly speaks to me (I asked for her when I arrived). Instead she delegates to an assistant manager. He tells me that they don't accept returns on these items at the store, that I need to contact the manufacturer & attempt to utilize their warranty. I stated this was not what I was told when I called, that I was told to bring it in. Then Sarah quips "I only said we'd LOOK at it." Seriously??? I had called & said I am ill due to chemo, need assistance to transport the table, and she tries to say she only agreed to have me arrange all of that so they can LOOK at it? Why the hell would I bother getting assistance & lugging that sorry ass table back to the store for them to look at it & just say they won't take it back to the store?!?!! What a complete joke and waste of my time & limited energy (& those who I recruited to help transport the table). And, Sarah provided zero customer service, as she repeatedly walked away & had nothing to say except to disagree about what she previously told me on the phone. So, now I have to call the manufacturer to try to remediate this. I don't even want a new table, as more screws & things fell off of the table just getting it in/out of a truck bed with 2 capable adults. But, Sarah, your customer service was shitty & non-existent. You misled me & I had explained how things were harder for me due to my illness. And you're a manager? What a joke. So, thanks for the opportunity to write my first bad yelp review. I'll no longer waste my time at that store, but I'll instead use my time to notify corporate about my experience. Update: Jaqueline at corporate was amazing. She was very attentive & prompt in tending to my issue. My table was returned to the store today. Just like any other Big 5 Store. Came just to purchase boxing gloves and was pleasantly surprised that the gloves were $5 cheaper than marked. I also brought in a coupon for $5 off $25 or more, so I was overall a happy camper. The store does have an interesting smell but as long as it serves its purpose, it's all good. Ehh...not the best in sporting good stores. Sport Chalet and Sports Authority are definitely bigger and more high quality. This store is small and does not have the best selection of items, but when it comes down to it, they have the basics of what you need and it is closest to my house. In this case, I needed a fishing license and some fishing bait and hooks. While I was at it, I bought some exercise equipment and some camping stuff because it was marked down to a great price. The assistant manager was very friendly and helpful, but the cashier seemed confused and kept ringing us up wrong and messing up our total which was annoying. read more

Big 5 on PCH at the Traffic Circle, Long Beach. BIG CUSTOMER SERVICE FAIL. Had 10 pieces of hiking shirts, pants, sport bras to try on (not to mention a basket full of other backyard sport items). Went to try on the clothing, told me I could only take in 3 items. The rest aren't hung on the back of the door, they keep them at the counter. Explained that was quite a hassle-I would have to dress to trade out 3 for 3 (nothing said about bringing the items to me). The manager said they have a problem with theft by homeless people. Do I look like I'm homeless ...no but they have to keep the policy the same regardless. This was not a young person learning the benefit of customer service, this was someone who should already have customer service skills. Maybe the manager-so angry I forgot to get his name! Gave him the clothes, and my very full basket of other items, and thanked him for wasting my time. Big 5, you deserve to shut down. read more

My complaint is about this entire strip mall rather than the store itself. I live in the area, and had a trailer attached to my truck for work (contractor). I couldn't find parking, and so parked in the wide open customer lot at this development. I have shopped at numerous locations here many times over, however, after being TOWED out of this parking lot, and having to pay $300 for my truck, and getting robbed for another $300 for the trailer, a charge I am now contesting as the towing company only hooked up ONCE, I have to say I will NEVER SHOP AT ANY STORES IN THIS STRIP MALL AGAIN. I parked at 12:30 AM, just past midnight, and woke up early to make sure I didn't inconvenience the development with my truck, but when I walked over at 6:30 AM, my truck and trailer was gone. Never again will I voluntarily spend my hard earned money at a place that takes advantage of someone who just needs a place to park for a few hours, especially in the middle of the night, when it does not impede their business activities in the slightest. I would suggest you avoid this place as well. read more

As for you people who don't like big five I personally feel you honestly just try to ,make life so much harder and so much more difficult than it is supposed to be for thee employees who do their job very much beyond adequately. In my personal experience, this store is extremely well stocked and the cashiers are very nice. They always greet me when I walk in and I am always helped when I need it. They are a busy store so patience is needed but other than that you can go here and finds what you neeD generally speaking for relatively cheap. Again those of you who d nothing but complain are really the type of people who just sit on your computers all day and just complain which makes you an unpleasant customer to deal with. Just wondering where all the women's clothes went??? There are two racks. Way in the back. Two. Meanwhile there are about 18 men's racks from the front door to the shoes. Pretty disappointed in this store as it's my go-to for workout gear, especially since Sports Authority is no longer.
