I have been a loyal shopper Sonoma Outfitters since 2017. They stock everything I need, from quality hiking shoes, to water proof rain gear. And all at competitive prices. On a recent gift hunting trip, I walked into a nearby shop to pickup a birthday present for my wife. I found exactly what I was looking for, however I not a single store associate would even acknowledge my presence. I then thought to myself, "I wonder if Sonoma Outfitters would these?" Sure enough they did and had other options as well. And of course, a salesperson helped me navigate through my decision and took the time to answer my every question. if i could give ZERO STARS I ABSOLUTELY WOULD. my boyfriend and i came in here today to browse and when we walked in none of the cashiers/associates greeted us or even acknowledged us. as we continued browsing i noticed one of the associates kept going back and forth and staring at my boyfriend (my boyfriend happens to be black and he happened to be only black person in the store) and that made me feel uncomfortable because i genuinely wanted to buy myself something but the way the employees made me and my boyfriend feel left a distaste in my mouth. please train your staff to be more welcoming towards customers and to stop assuming any person of color that comes in is going to steal something. read more

In speaking with the nice woman who manages inventory, she let me know that they will not carry an item that they can back up quality wise. They don't want to see a returned item that was returned for durability issues, so they simply carry excellent labels such as Patagonia, Prana, Columbia etc. One of Montgomery Villages best merchandises shops. I love to support local and this shop is a great local option to the more branded competitors out there (REI and Sports Basement). I always manage to find some fun and interesting products that I don't always find at the larger outlet options in town. Their product lines are similar to the bigger stores but I find slightly different patterns and styles which is awesome to diversify the choices locally. Around the holidays they really ramp up pajamas, slippers, gift-like items to really help round out your gifts. Even first of the year they still had a good variety which is nice because after the holiday I know the bigger competitors tend to wind down these options for sale. Pricing on these types of products is always on the higher end but they have some great sales and it's nice to be able to support locally knowing you are making a difference in someone's livelihood versus a corporate machine. read more

Stopped in today. My lovely spouse spent more than $300 on 4 cold weather clothing items made by Patagonia. Expensive stuff but admittedly the items are high quality. The thermal socks are made in Vermont! When was the last time you heard of socks made in Vermont? Yeah, me neither. Store is about 99% clothing. If I take a trip down memory lane like many other Yelp'ers have, I too remember when Sonoma Outfitters had a MUCH larger variety of equipment like sleeping bags, kayaks, snow shoes, skis, rugged camping tents, rock climbing gear. Well, that was then and this is now. Obviously clothing is a better profit margin business. The store has been here in Montgomery Village shopping center for several years, so it must be a successful business model. Friendly sales people cruise the floor and check in with browsers asking if they can be of assistance. Guy who interacted with me was probably bored and lonely as he wanted to talk. So we bantered, it was fun. So my verdict: Come here if you want to find some warm weather clothing for your trip to the mountains. Be forewarned that the variety and selection is not great. Just a few manufacturers, but good ones. If you need sleeping bags, backpacks, mountains bikes, camp stoves, rock climbing equipment, etc, You have to visit REI or less recommended - Dick's Sporting Goods. read more

Times are rough and retailers, local ones especially, are extra challenged and have to compete with online merchants. I want to support this place but they often make it very difficult. Went there for possible holiday shopping around thanksgiving time and they had a full staff not helping a single customer. I didn't hear any greeting or inquiries if any of us shoppers needed help. Two young clerks sat on the counters, both on their cell phones. I waited around the shoe area for a while but as I scanned around and contemplated calling for help, I instead checked prices on my own cell phone and decided to go elsewhere. ‍ read more

I wandered around the store for about an hour, and although there were several staff on duty, including a middle aged black haired woman that seemed like the owner, no one ever said hello, if they could help me, or even acknowledged me. Patty and her staff were wonderful, knowledgeable on the products, friendly, and patient We spent 2 hours there asking them a ton of questions and they walked us through all the layering and gear options for our upcoming trip to Iceland. They weren't pushy on having us buy. In fact, they said take our time and we could always come back to try on things again and buy if we' were ready. Would definitely recommend their shop to others. I try my best to shop local and support the community but when it comes to outdoor gear... Sonoma Outfitters makes this difficult. The selection is often lacking - I just went in on a sunny 65 degree spring day to try and buy a sleeveless top for an upcoming trip and they had primarily winter coats, down vests and long sleeve shirts. Their sizes tend towards S and M - hey, Sonoma Outfitters, tall people (and large people) like to get outdoors too. Finally, the clothes themselves are fairly bland - I suppose they may be targeting an older generation (?) but aside from the Prana section there is very little in the way of patterns or interesting cuts. In summary: Meh. I leave this review in the hopes that someone will take the feedback to heart and overhaul the clothing section. It needs some real work. read more

I will never shop at Sonoma outfitters again. Their "rewards program" is a scam- after purchasing over $500 worth of gear there and inquiring about when I might start seeing some cash back, their dimwitted employee realized that none of my purchases were input into the rewards program even though they ask if I'm a member every single time I've been rung up. Their response to THEIR mistake is that I should come back at a later date to redeem my points. When I inquired as to how could I be sure this wouldn't just happen again- their response is "why would that happen?" The only reason I would drive all the way across the county to purchase good from your store is to support a local business, but your customer service is not worth my money and definitely not worth my time. read more

I am not a big shopper but occasionally when I need a new fleece, hiking shoes or some such I often stop by S.O. Truth be told I preferred their store on 3rd Street, but in general I like the brands/merchandise they stock so I go to the Montgomery Village store and have for several years. I have always been treated very well at S.O. I was just in for Xmas (2021) gift shopping, found a nice selection, and the young man who waited on me was very friendly/helpful. All went smoothly and I left with my purchases prepped for Xmas, i.e., in boxes I only had to wrap. In the 20+ years I have on-and-off shopped at S.O. I've always left happy. S.O. is not a Walmart sized giant. It is a small shop. Because they stock merchandise I like I'll always try them to see if they have what I want before going elsewhere. read more

Being a big fan of hiking, travel and the outdoors, I love that Sonoma Outfitters caters to all of these activities. Their new shop location in Montgomery Village is super convenient, spacious and a pleasure to shop inside... and the store has the same welcoming, knowledgeable & friendly staff. Evan, Jay and Chris are really knowledgeable and I enjoyed learning about the background of the brands they carry... They have a terrific array of shoes for hikers of all levels. Evan had great recommendations and truly listened to what I was looking for in a shoe. A++ customer service. As a small local business owner, I can appreciate & understand Sonoma Outfitters' focus on quality over quantity. Sure, you can buy shirts in seven different shades of green at REI or Big5, but really, who needs seven different green shirts? I appreciate their focus on quality brands & manufacturers and feel they take time to curate the collections (shoes, clothing, sunglasses) they offer... their buyer has a great eye! we were out to spend some $$ on hiking boots. Went to REI, which was a zoo of humanity. Asked three times for help, but they were all busy (good for REI, so not offended). The selection was not great and what the did have was more expensive then we planned to spend, so we decided to bounce. look up this place in the car and drove over. They were busy also but we were greeted and told we would be helped shortly. The selection was twice what REI had and with everything from bargain boots to the very high end. We picked out three each of mid-range boots. One person got them for us and talked to us a bit, he was called away by another customer, a girl came up to check on us. In the end we got two paris or boots that were pefect. The entire staff was awesome, friendly, knowledgable, and helpful even though they were busy. Customer service was ridiculous! Ridiculously amazing. I went in to find a pair of size 13EE sneakers for my husband. He waiting in the car while I checked with the employee to see what they had in size 13. I mentioned my husband was in the car because his feet were swollen and he had trouble walking. To my surprise the man helping me asked if I wanted to take the two pairs of shoes out to my car to let my husband try them on. while outside trying the shoes on, the man came out with another pair of shoes that he found in the back stockroom. Went in here on Sunday July 6th. They moved into my neighborhood and we like to support local business' so we went over. It happens that it was their "Grand Opening" weekend. Who would know? No music, no banners, no signs, no energy, not many folks. The store felt "dead". I was looking for some CROCS and could't find my size. When I asked if they had any stock in the back... The first sales person I spoke to said, "No." Not, "NO, but let me help you take a look." Just No. When I told the folks at the counter that I had come in looking for a pair of CROCS and couldn't find anything in the original style in size 9, they said, "O.K." and smiled. What? O.K.? What does that mean? Then I asked if I could get a pair ordered, the sales clerk who rang up our $200 + order told me no one was there on Sundays to take orders. Finally, after going around a bit, he told me he could take my name and number and tell the person who does the ordering and they would get back to me: "NOT SURE WHEN THOUGH". Really? Went to their store today and had my purse over my shoulder, and it was pouring rain all day today, so I had my extra hoodie slung over my arm just in case, since Montgomery village is a completely outdoor shopping mall. Well I wasn't inside Sonoma outfitters for more than 5-7 minutes before I was accused of trying to walk out with their merchandise in my purse (MY black sweatshirt from Target, limp, wrinkly, saggy, & wet from being carried around in the rain). I informed them that it was my sweatshirt I had (and showed them- as all 3 or 4 employees rushed me before I even had a chance to walk through the doors and exit the store.) And they were loud about it too. Pretty humiliating when I did nothing wrong...mind you I didn't so much as touch any item in the store, nor did I act like I was concealing any merchandise inside my purse or anywhere else on my person. I had never been to this store before but decided to try it in August, 2021. I purchased a pair of Hoka Hiking Boots which are wonderful so I decided to purchase a pair for my husband for an upcoming hike that is planned. The sales woman told us that they weren't available in brown so we decided to purchase the black as she could have them in within the week. She also told me that if there was going to be a problem getting them in that I would receive a call within 3 days. I stopped by 5 days later and was told they were ordered and since I didn't receive a call that they would be in within the week. I went back again today and was told that they were NEVER ORDERED. I explained that this was not satisfactory and she told me that next time she won't be so forthright. She was NEVER forthright, instead, she lied. There will NEVER be a next time as I won't be giving my business to this store. read more

What a bummer! Walked in the store to buy some gifts with my mom, one of which was a pair of VERY CuTE baby boots for my friend's son- they were here on a short trip from out-of-state and we were meeting them for lunch across the street at Boudin within the next hour. We decided on a pair of shoes that were sized for 12 months old and asked the salesperson about their return policy. She explained as long as you have the receipt with tags attached and return within 10 days you can have a full refund. I explained to the salesperson that was perfect, I'm meeting my friends for lunch across the way so we'll have her son try them on there and if it doesn't fit him, we'll swing by the store afterwards and get a new size. Sounded pretty straight forward. We bought a bunch of stuff and met my friends for lunch, we had her son try on the boots and they wouldn't fit- no problem, I'll just walk them over after we're finished eating and get the next size up. My mom had to be home, so she gave me the receipt for the boots and we parted ways. My friends from out of town and I walked back over to Sonoma Outfitters (with an hour to spare before closing time), and picked out the same exact pair of boots, only in size 18 months old. The SAME salesperson that helped me 3 hours ago pick the pair of boots was at the register. I said "hi, it's me again" and she didn't even bat an eyelash. Ok, maybe she doesn't remember me, that's alright. I present the boots I had just purchased, the receipt, and the new pair of boots. Again, I wanted the same exact brand/ color/type of boots, just in one size bigger for the baby. The salesperson asks for the credit card in which it was purchased... I tell her that unfortunately I don't have the credit card, it went home with my mom who I was with earlier. The salesperson apologizes and says that she's unable to do the return for me without the card. She needs to be able to return the original pair of boots on the credit card it was purchased with and then she can ring up the new item. What??? I asked if we had to go through all of that even though it's pretty much "an even exchange?" Her curt reply- "well, it's NOT an even exchange because it's NOT the same item. You are buying a bigger size." F*%^ing wow! I didn't get to make my exchange and because my friends were going back to Nevada early the next morning, I wouldn't be able to give them the boots. Such a disappointment. I returned to the store the next Monday with my mom and her credit card to return the boots; we were so displeased with our service that we made sure to also return the 5 shirts we bought as gifts at the same time- we're not supporting this place in any way. read more

The staff here is excellent, very friendly and helpful. I walked in to look around and they gave me time to look, and then inquired if I needed any help. They pointed out the dressing rooms and helped me to find some great products. There is a cheerful atmosphere as everyone was engaged and doing something. It was nice to see people enjoying their work! They have a great selection of sports and casual wear. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in Santa Rosa. read more

I shop locally as much as possible, but Sonoma Outfitters is one local business that does not treat its customers well. I purchased a Patagonia down vest for my daughter for Christmas, and within 2 weeks it had sprung a hole and a long string of downy fluff started coming out. We took it back to Sonoma Outfitters, who promised to send it to Patagonia for replacement. It is now February 16th and we still do not have the replacement vest that had been promised. I had to follow up literally 5 times with the store, and each time I was given a different story. Today they finally presented me with a vest, but it was the original vest that had been "repaired and re-sewn". When I told them that "repair" was not what we'd agreed upon, "Evan the store manager" lied to me. This is what he said: "Patagonia always repairs their items. They don't replace things because they don't want their products in the landfills". Seriously...that's what he told me. So I told him to hold onto the vest for a bit while I made a few phone calls. I stepped outside and called Patagonia, and they told me that "Evan the store manager" had given me false information. They told me that Patagonia ALWAYS offers REPLACEMENT, REPAIR or REFUND. They said it was up to the customer to get whatever they wanted. Patagonia went as far as to tell me that I should handle the return on my own, since Sonoma Outfitters obviously could not be trusted to manage the process themselves. So I marched back into the store and presented this information to "Evan the store manager", who was sweating by this time. His response--"Well I don't know what you want me to do. It's been repaired and you're outside of our return policy." Nice, right? I took the vest and left, and I'll handle it directly with Patagonia. In the meantime, Sonoma Outfitters has lost a "local customer" for good. read more
