Second time visiting this Big 5 location, I didn't really come here to buy anything specifically but ended up purchasing a curl bar. They had several different styles and the manager was very helpful in the selection process. The bar I selected was well priced compared to other locations I have been to. I had a really disappointing experience at this Big 5 store. One of the employees was extremely rude and refused to let me purchase trading cards for no valid reason. All of his coworkers were wearing name tags except him, and when I asked for his name, he refused to give it. What made the situation worse is that he treated me like I was trying to steal something. He acted as if I wasn't allowed to see what I was buying and made me feel completely disrespected. I've never been treated like that in a store before. If Big 5 values good customer service, they should address employees who behave this way. No customer deserves to be talked down to or judged when they're simply trying to make a purchase. I go to this Big 5 all of the time. Frequently the employees are uninterested in being helpful. The young woman working today could not be bothered to stop checking her texts on her watch in order to do a quick search of what I was looking for. This is the 3rd such encounter w/ the apathetic employee for my family, thus the review today. It takes 30 seconds to be courteous and helpful. read more

I like Big 5 and have gone there for decades (various stores). I'm writing because of the manager on duty. I came in Saturday night (02/02/19 around 8ish) and Lauren (I'm pretty certain I read her name badge correctly; blonde hair/early 30's) was at the register just on the phone talking away. No greeting, and just talking to a friend very nonchalantly asking what they were doing later that night and tomorrow for the Super Bowl. I was a little irked cause I mean "where's the customer service?" I was really disappointed when I had to move a bunch of items in the front window display to look at a clearance Rams canopy while she sat there and watched as I removed the WHOLE canopy to verify it didn't say St. Louis Rams. No asking if I needed help or if she may be of assistance... just chatted away on the phone smiling and giggling. I eventually gave up and got a canopy from the main row of the store as well as some other items. Got to the front where a line of 4 customers deep were standing, and she decided to leave her cashier to go sit in the office. I even told the cashier I felt for him and understood it wasn't his fault that the manager decided he needed to fend for himself. (She wasn't getting change, I had asked the cashier in hopes that may be the cause). Hopefully Big 5 looks into this and order some retraining. read more

I was looking for 20 gauge shotgun shells and used Big 5 website feature of checking store inventory. One of the stores showed out of stock which I knew was accurate since I had just been there. Another store showed stock so I went there and purchased last box. The Yorba Linda store showed in stock so I drove there (7 miles from my house) only to find there was no stock. I mentioned the website info to employee and he, in not a friendly way, said "well I guess the website is wrong isn't it?". He then said they were out of stock for the last 2 weeks. He didn't apologize for the error, volunteer to report to management, nothing. Just for kicks, I checked the store where I bought the last box and it now showed no stock. Funny how information for the other two stores was correct but this one wasn't. Anyway, I was more ticked at his flip attitude and lack of customer service. I had an issue with adjusting a jump rope that I bought here. It seemed impossible (everyone online seemed frustrated about the topic too) - I brought it in and they worked for several minutes trying to fix the issue. My Husband and I, with my boys ages 7 and 9, went to shop today and am very disappointed with the Manager and the female clerk. When asked if I could use the 20% coupon more than once, she replied "I would double check if I were you." Not very helpful. They did allow us to use the coupon for all our purchases which totalled over $400, but not before being lectured by the Manager that if our transaction caused delay and a line formed, we would not. What the?? I did not appreciate being talked to in this manner in front of my boys. I teach my boys to treat people with respect and to be fair. To add insult, the female clerk told my Husband to get another pair of baseball gloves because it was missing a manufacturer's tag and the price. I told her we had already looked and it was the last pair. Not sure why my Husband went to look, I'm thinking he wanted to be out of the store as quickly as possible. The manager got on the phone and checked another store. I should actually call another store tomorrow (they are closed right now). The female clerk can act friendly, as during the time she waited for the manager's call, she checked out 3 other customers and I got to observe her make small talks with the customers, make compliments about their children and even say, "Thank you. Have a good one." We didn't hear this from her when we left the store. I should point out that the young gentleman in the back assisting customers with the shoes was helpful. I plan on contacting their corporate office. I held back because my kids were with me. This store needs a new manager and a new clerk. I would not be surprised if they were related. I cannot understand how the Manager became a Manager because he certainly does not know how to treat a customer and manage his employee.
