My brother and sister are in town visiting with my husband and I , we decided to order three pizzas for lunch this afternoon. They both shared a BLT pizza, and within four hours upon eating they both started getting instant flu like symptoms ( food poisoning ) I decided to call them to let them know, to prevent others from becoming sick, and instead was told food poisoning takes at least 48 hours ( incorrect but I felt no need to argue ) That it must have been something else they ate, ( that was the first thing we all ate today, and the only thing they shared!! ) and in a nut shell that there food is good quality so there's NO way it was them. No apology, no sympathy and no offer to refund the one pizza. Needless to say ( as my brother is in the background vomiting ) I can say with certantity we will never eat at this facility again, and I feel responsible for letting others know to prevent further illness. read more

This not a Chicago Deep Dish pizza. Mushrooms are canned. In a true Chicago style, the crust should be crispy everywhere; this is soggy on the bottom. The top layer should be sauce not cheese. I did not see one person wearing gloves when assembling the pizzas. Shouldn't have eaten it, but we wanted to see what a "Top 10 Pizza restaurant by Pure Michigan" tasted like. Don't. Came here over the fourth after visting the fam in town. Ordered the Mega Meat pizza, BBQ Chicken pizza, and Garlic Sticks for the parents and BF. AMAZING. It's still as great as it was when I lived in Manistee. The BBQ Chicken pizza was by far the best BBQ chicken pizza I've ever had. If you're in town, skip Little Caesars and Pizza Hut and come here. You will not be disappointed. Big Al's is also famous for their subs, stromboli, mexican items, and wraps. If you're looking for something healthy and non-greasy, do not come here. I went to Big Al's as a kid just after it opened. It must have been the only pizza place in Manistee at the time. And I Loved it. Pizza or my very own sub sandwich, it didn't matter. Those taste memories will always be with me. The past two years I have had the opportunity to go back to Manistee and have eaten at Big Al's each time. Sometimes more than once a day. The location is different. The "atmosphere" is the same. Best of all, neither the pizza, nor the subs have changed. Still one of the best crusts I have had. Great sauce. And the subs are still excellent. Why someone hasn't tried to franchise this pizza, I will never know. read more

I would give this place zero stars if I could. It was so so dirty. We literally sat at a big folding table with no table cloth. Waited 45 min for a pizza with bad quality ingredients (canned mushrooms) that was all wet and the crust wasn't done. Drove a long way to come here for the "best pizza in northern Michigan" title. We got a large "Chicago style" and a large cheese bread. Sad to say, it was a disappointment. First, the older guy handing money and making food without gloves needed a beard net over his long white beard. The place is dingy but I didn't factor that in to my dislike of the food. The cheese bread tasted like microwaved plain breadsticks with rubbery mozzarella over them, which were stacked on top of each other and shoved into a styrofoam container. They were all stuck together and the cheese peeled off in one piece, leaving behind a soggy bread stick. The ranch is salad ranch. Very vinegary. Not good for dipping pizza or breadsticks, or anything else for that matter. The pizza is not Chicago style. It's hand tossed pizza dough placed in to a pan too small for it so the edges come up the sides. Dry edges. And the pizza was flat and soggy in the middle. Canned veggies. This pizza literally fell flat, literally, in texture, taste, and presentation. Disappointed all around with Big Als. We won't be making the long drive again. read more

Great pizza and subs, the best in Northern Michigan! The service is great and polite. This type of pizza is the type of pizza where after one bite your dying for another. The subs are loaded and stuff you silly. It's an Italian feast. On low side though the only thing I have too say is that the restaurant is really dirty. read more

I have been in California for four years now... the one thing I MISS.... BIG ALs... ham and cheese sub w EXTRA sub sauce and sub sauce on the side... I have been eating at BIG ALs for over 20yrs... I have traveled to almost every state and even out of the U.S. and Big Als is still the BEST!!! Now I just have to get them to ship them to California... This is not the same pizza that we have enjoyed since the 70's. The pizza ovens have been replaced with a conveyor system that leave the large pizzas raw. Not sure if we will return. read more

I can only assume they must of had a change in management or something since they were supposedly rated so high. We've lived all over Michigan and this place rates as one of the worst pizza's we've had. The crust was to thin and then so greasy that it was practically non-existent. We couldn't even pick it up and had to eat it with a fork. Gross. There was nothing special about the flavors itself. We decided to give them a second chance a month later due to all of the rave reviews and ordered a small pizza and a stromboli. Pizza was still seriously lacking (altho the crust held up better this time). The stromboli was just boring. Ok, I'm glad I am not the only one who thought this place was not good. I had read all wonderful reviews on many different sites and drove my family here 40 minutes to try it out. Very unwelcoming interior. As stated, paper plates and plastic utensils. I wouldn't care really if the food made up for it but it was awful. We ordered deep dish pizza and it was not Chicago style, it was maybe 1/3" thick and the pizza sauce had no flavor and was actually watery which made the crust and bottom soggy. I sat trying to carve into this thing with a plastic fork and would have picked it up and just eaten it with my hands if there was a chance I could raise it up without all the toppings sliding off with the watery sauce. One of the cooks was eating in back while preparing food. Even my 12 year old asked me if I thought the kitchen looked kinda sketchy. We were hungry when we left. read more

We had a hand tossed pizza with pepperoni, sausage and onions. The onions were fresh and thinly cut and the pizza was fantastic. The service was fast and the pizza was super hot. Went here for dinner and ordered the pizza pasta bake which was penne pasta with pizza sauce, sausage, pepperoni and cheese. Not fine dining, but very tasty and straightforward which is my style. I don't really like complicated, exotic food. I prefer well executed, simple stuff which this was. If I am there again, I will try the pizza.
