I had high hopes for this place. It is a cute little place. I love that they cut the meats fresh in house and have home made items in the deli display. I ordered the Ruben and was highly disappointed. It was over dressed and the corn beef itself was so fatty that I was unable to eat over half of the meat in the sandwich. I was so upset because I really wanted a good ruben. The french onion soup however did not disappoint.I will try to make it over there to give them a try before I leave, I think maybe it was just a bad day. read more

This place is awesome! The people are super friendly and all of the food is served up fresh! I have only tried two of the sandwiches on the menu - a meatball and the Reuben, and both were perfect. Instead of having prepared meats ready to be made into sandwiches - like Subway and all the other chains - Big Apple Deli slices the meat right in front of you. Their soups are delicious as well...everything tastes so home made. Toledo needs more little places like Big Apple Deli to break up the monotony of having fast food restaurants on every corner. What a good place to eat. All the food is great! The one thing I would change would be the slices of meat are sometimes to think for a sandwich. The soups are good, I like the French onion soup. The dill pickles are great sliced up and are always fresh. The service is always good and friendly but can be slow at times, but it's totally worth the wait. They are know for there Ruben sandwich and it is great, something you have to try. So if I were you I would swing by and try it out. Lots to choose from so give yourself a few minutes to check out the menu. You can get it to go or dine in. They also have a drive through which is nice go through if you already know what you want. I don't eat here enough. I think it's because by the time I think of them, they're already closed. My guess is they do most of their business 9-3. After 5 they have half as many cars in onsite. Sandwich portions are huge. There's gotta be at least a half pound of meat in most of their sandwiches, and the medium is enough to fill most folks. The large just overfills me. And saving it for later--well, it does not taste the same five hours later. It's not just the food. It's the character of the place as well. I miss Tim and the original crew. When his son took over after his death, I guess many of his original staff left, and Tim, Jr. had to hire new. Maybe Tim, Jr. wanted the service to just be good. With the old crew, you could count on New York style hassle. Especially on make-your-own's. They'd tease and taunt. Check back with you while you were eating. Really, really personable. Be glad when the pandemic is over. read more

Every one says best Rueben in town...i worked there its a joke the bread is grilled and the meat and cheese is melted in a ramen noodle cooker in a microwave then assembled...all the hot sandwiches are made this way... Stay away they will wash hunks of meat in the back sink and serve it to you...even after its hit the floor read more

Big Apple is by far one of the best lunch places in Toledo. I work downtown/East Side, so I am lucky enough to be close to this hidden gem daily. I've been eating here for the past six years and never once have I been disappointed. Everything is reasonably priced...I would go as far as to saying cheap, but that sounds negative and I don't want people to mistake the price with the quality of food. You get huge proportions for what you pay, and it is evident that every sandwich is made with some TLC. The staff is incredibly friendly and I don't think they have ever once written my order down, even when I'm ordering for 15 people. Great service, great food, great atmosphere. read more

There are so many things charming and loveable about Big Apple Deli, including super friendly staff and the simple, quaint little dining room. But, the reason people love this place is simple - the sandwiches are fantastic and super filling. Get of of the recommended signature subs or build to order, either way, you'll be satisfied with the fresh meats and cheeses, crispy vegetables, and big portions. I also highly recommend the 5 Alarm Chili. It will melt your face off, but it's soooo worth it. You can get regular chili if you're weak, or half-and-half if you're moderately weak. ;) read more

So here in Toledo for work and out contact person took us here for lunch. I had a tuna sandwich and it was pretty good. I noticed they had a large selection of deli items and all freshly made big bonus. Everyone welcomes you here with a smile (a major Ohio thing I've noticed...very refreshing). However, I've been to New York...to a deli and all and although this place is pretty darn good it's not the Big Apple type delis I know of so just one star off for that. Otherwise great place to grab lunch and all served in a homey deli. read more

Stopped in at 3pm (after the lunch rush) and I was one of two customers in the place. The staff was super friendly, made some good recommendations and to top all, they knew what an Arnold Palmer was - winning! Excellent sandwhiches, good sides, and a very friendly staff all make for a very good deli. I highly recommend the Fire Island with a side of the baked beans. If I'm not in the mood for that I will get the chili dog which is a nice treat. When compared to the "chili" meat sauce thrown on dogs at most places the use of actually chili makes for something different with a good flavor. Gotta thank the wife for introducing me to this place years ago, I'm not a regular, but there enough to know what I like. The sandwhich trays for catering to groups are good at a reasonable price also. Enough sandwhiches for 20, with two bags of chips, and enough baked beans was just a little over $100. read more

This little deli has everything you could ask for in a deli! The closest thing to a New York style deli you will find in Toledo. Food is always fresh and made to order.
