They were so good that the meat came right of the bone and it was perfectly smoked (probably with hickory wood, if I were to guess). This was your standard low fuss bar. Dark inside, but plenty of tables and room. Staff were all super friendly and the food was good. Had burgers and fries, which I find to be hit or miss in Murray, but these hit the spot. Beer was cold and the liquor cheap too once we got the bill. read more

Went here today because of the good reviews on yelp. And we have also been looking for some decent wings since we moved to the area. I am fairly confident in saying this place has the best wings in the town and most likely the region. In fact they were some of the best wings I've had anywhere. They were perfectly cooked, meaty, had just the right amount of crunch, and the sauces (Buffalo, sriracha bourbon) were delicious. We also tried the BLT and club sandwiches which were hearty and tasty. Fries were well cooked, not greasy and just enough crisp. Service was quick and friendly. The bar is separated from the restaurant and has a divey feel to it. The restaurant was busy but not packed. All together we had a great lunch here and will definitely return. Came in town & was starving so I ordered takeout via Doordash from the hotel. This place had great reviews & the menu options sounded delicious so I was sold. I ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich with Season Waffle Fries & a side of the Brisket Baked Beans. The sandwich bread was very good, it had a slightly sweet flavor which would've been a great compliment had the pulled pork been better. It wasn't horrible, but the only thing that saved the meal was the sweet & spicy BBQ sauce & the waffle fries. I was pressed to get the Brisket Baked Beans, only to find no brisket in them. They definitley tasted like pork & beans! It was a to-go order & there were no napkins or utensils included. Small details like this matter for takeout orders. My wife and I have eaten here a couple of times w/ our son and his girlfriend. As they attend the university, they knew about this place and recommend it to us. So on each trip we have tried different things so we could honestly judge the quality of the food as well as the drinks. Thus far the visits have been on Saturday either mid-day or early evening but haven't had any trouble being seated. The Black and Blue burger was highly recommended by our son, his girlfriend and the waitress. Giving that I love Blu cheese on a burger, I was looking forward to trying it and hoping I wouldn't be disappointed; I wasn't and neither was my wife. It was delicious. They serve the burger w/ the lettuce/tomato/onion on the side so you control what you want w/out being forced to pick something off. The seasoned waffle fries are good but when the burger is the star, it's hard for any fry to measure up. I really enjoyed the Old Fashion; made very well, nice and strong (not watered down or diluted w/ lots of ice). Recently I gave the Reuben a try. Once again I was hoping not to be disappointed. It was remarkable really good. My only drawback is with the amount of corned beef used on this sandwich. I have eaten many a Ruebens and the corn beef has always been at "least" piled on as thick a single slice of bread. Sadly, the one I was served here was about half the thickness of a slice of bread. It was very good and met the benchmark of taste but didn't measure up on the amount of corn beef on the sandwich. Also on this visit my wife had the Pulled Pork sandwich w/ side of brisket baked beans. She said it was very good, moist and not dry. She did choose to omit the barbecue sauce as it tasted like it was store bought from a bottle. She said the brisket baked beans were soft, not dry or hard from sitting around. Nice flavor to them. As they have weekly drink specials, we choose the House Margaritas. Very good, not overly strong but not weak either. Smooth would best describe them. As we look forward to returning to give some of the other items on their menu a try, I hope to continue to give our reviews of these items too. Side note; they do have several tv's located throughout the restaurant and they have a very nice bar area w/ darts and several tv's there as well. Personal note; it's not overly bright inside. Not so dark as to keep you from seeing one another or your food but if have a little trouble seeing to read, it could pose a slight challenge or it does to me. read more

Service was fantastic. My wife had a house salad and I had a chef salad. Both salads had entirely too much celery. We noticed the flavor to be a little off. Our stomachs struggled all the way home. Although I've been in Murray for 7 or 8 months, I had not really visited Big Apple Cafe. Many, many years ago, I visited its previous incarnation "down South," but its current location is quite different. I'll touch on a few aspects: The physical space: very large, and pragmatically divided. The bar is a separate room from the dining areas, and there is a dedicated area for live music that does not require half the dining room be cleared in order to have a show. Like most bars / restaurants in Murray, smoking is allowed indoors. However, Big Apple Cafe has dedicated part of the dining room as non-smoking, so that is at least a step in the right direction. Hopefully, the city of Murray will eventually ban smoking indoors, but I don't see it coming very soon. The food / drinks: Adequate to good. They have a full bar, with quite a few beer selections on tap. Likewise, the menu is diverse, and while some items have been merely adequate (wings, chicken bites), others have been excellent (the steak sandwich on ciabatta bread). Overall, it serves more as a restaurant than a bar, so their food will satisfy a wide range of preferences. The prices are affordable, as well. The staff/people: I have always had excellent service here, whether I have been sitting at the bar or at a table. They always seem well-staffed, and I have not had to wait or "chase down" a server. They are also unfailingly friendly. There is only one negative, but I found it a bit disturbing: the police. Murray is a small, college town. I can only assume the police are bored or have time on their hands. I left the Big Apple after a music show (Bawn in the Mash) one Saturday night and was shocked to find at least three police cars just trolling through the parking lot, doing laps around the place, and otherwise actively attempting to "nab" anyone that seemed like an easy DUI or PI mark. While I don't condone drinking and driving, I found this to be almost predatory - the implication was that anyone walking out of the place at closing was a "suspect" and that did not sit well with me. I asked around and found that this is common behavior for Murray police, especially on the weekend. I understand there is a need to keep the roads safe from inebriated drivers (especially prevalent in college towns), but trolling parking lots seemed like a bit much, to me. Luckily, Murray is small enough that I can walk to several nearby watering holes. Give Big Apple Cafe a try, especially during the week! read more

This brings back memories from college. First off, I've never eaten here. I know it's Big Apple CAFE, but barely any student in Murray knows that they actually are open during the day and serve food. Yet on most nights (Thursdays being the big night) this place turns from a so so restaurant to the most packed bar in Murray. On Thursdays and the weekend they usually have live music playing. It's definitely not a fancy place by any means, but if you're looking for a chill place in town, then look no further than The Apple. read more

Had to wait 20 mins between pitchers after asking for it multiple times then got over charged because the waitress thought she had brought out pitchers that she didn't bring out. Also the worst manager to customer service I've seen anywhere 100 percent would not recommend this place to anyone, its a waste of time and money! Was in town for work (their highland festival) & hadn't eaten all day, as I was setting up my booth down the road at Central Park. I'd noticed it as I passed that morning & was glad to find them open when I called it a day late in the evening. Nice little place they have there. All the staff was very friendly & accomodating. Tried the Big Apple BBQ with their sweet & spicy sauce and hash brown casserole. It was just what the Dr ordered...could probably have finished it...if I'd been willing to eat till I burst! 4 Stars, but it's relative to what it is (a college town bar/cafe) and where it is (Murray, KY). Really good sandwiches, salads and Mexican food. I've been eating at The Apple before it was even in Murray. It doesn't matter what you get, it's good! The chili, gumbo, bean roll, chips and salsa, sandwiches, tostadas, drinks, everything. Nothing fancy about the service. Friendly is what counts. Laid back is what it is. Sports on tv. Noise in the bar. Love this place! You won't get this anywhere else which makes it a must try when in town. A lot of college students here. If you want to avoid that try lunch instead of dinner. I only wish they would update the bathrooms. They definitely make you feel like you're in an old bar. Just haven't been taken very good care of. It won't stop me from going just wish there was as much attention to keeping up the place as there is on the food! read more

Fun place to hang out. The food is extremely good. If you want something light try the Green Chili, unique flavors and an excellent choice. My best friend's favorite is the Smoo which is a bean roll covered with green chili. Bean Rolls have been popular since the restaurant opened. The sandwiches are killer, many come on bread from the local bakery. I have been going to the Big Apple since it opened in Puryear, TN, many years ago and the food has remained consistently good. It is a family run business and worth a visit. read more

We've been going here since it was located in Tennessee. Great owners, staff is always great and friendly. Food is cheap and good (it isn't gourmet) but I think you will be pleasantly surprised with nearly everything on the menu. The make me suffer salsa is making me hungry just thinking about it. Only those of us who have been around a few years remember that this GREAT place in Murray started out as a little dive bar right on the other side of the TN state line. The food, service and entertainment of the live bands ROCK! If you have never eaten at the "Apple" you should try the house specialty....The Special Bean Roll.....it is wonderful and makes my mouth water just thinking about it. I have never been able to eat dessert there! The beer is ice cold and tastes great the the "bean roll". Bon Appetite! read more
