For the past couple months, I've enjoyed going to Big Block Brewing's Sammamish location on Thursday nights to play Mah Jong. I've tried a variety of their beers, hard seltzers, and hop water and have liked all of them so far. I've found the place to be welcoming and a fun environment in which to meet friends. Tony has been very kind and helpful and provides great service. I'd also like to take this opportunity to educate any reviewers who complain that their children are excluded. I'm not employed by or associated with this business in any manner, nor am I providing them (or any reader) legal advice. However, I do know that the Revised Code of Washington Chapter 66 is the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act for this state. It makes a distinction between brewery taprooms and brewers who run their business as a tavern. Some breweries serve their beverages at taprooms which allow children on the premises. However, some breweries (like Big Block Brewing's Sammamish location) instead have tavern licenses which categorically prohibit anyone under the age of 21 from being on the premises at any time, under any condition. It's not their fault; it's the law. When they refuse admittance to a child, they aren't being unreasonable. They're simply abiding by the law and ensuring that they do not violate it (a misdemeanor offense) and risk losing their liquor license. Personally, I think it's unfair to punish a business with a bad review because of the legal framework under which they are currently licensed. If you want to bring your kids (&/or dogs), their Redmond location is just 10 miles away and has a different license (probably because that is where the beer is now brewed), so maybe try going there. read more

This is the first brewery that I've been to in Washington, California, and Illinois states that won't let you in if you have a minor with you. I understand that for bars and places that serve liquor they don't allow in minors - but all other breweries I've been to allow families to come in so the adults can enjoy a drink. For me, the rating of a brewery always starts with the beer, and it is stellar. All varieties I've tasted have been well-crafted and it is very clear the brewer is an ace. In particular, the Cascade Highway IPA is one of the best in the state in my opinion. The Special Bitter is also incredibly good. My wife loves the Raspberry Blonde. Don't be fooled by the front entrance in a strip mall! The outdoor beer garden is cool, with plenty of different seating areas. The whole brewery has a car motif. Service has always been great. Well, I got to check another brewery off of my list and Big Block did not disappoint. I've been hearing about it for years from a friend of mine who goes there frequently, but hadn't stopped in myself until last week - so glad I finally did because (cha-ching!) they have a Brown Ale on tap! And not just any ol' Brown Ale, but an award-winning one as well. It was malty, dark, and really hit the spot on a cold, rainy fall evening. I also enjoyed a couple of Rocky's Empanadas, which they served up piping hot with a side of homemade chimichurri. The mushroom one was my favorite, and paired well with my ale. The vibe here is cars so there's a lot of automobila memorabilia and decor to enjoy while you're sipping your beer. They have cans to-go, plenty of parking, and (of course) friendly beertenders, too. Good beer but now they are serving Rocky's Empandas from Redmond which I am sure is a good product but it is pre-processed, and I do not think the instructions were followed properly by Big Bliock brewing. I see it was cooked in a toaster oven and I think they were supposed to be piereced with a fork. The spinach and the other mushroom one I got were completely different sizes and shapes. It was very doughy and plain white dough (which did not look cooked completely with some burnt parts.) Not equal cooking. Last time I went it was their Redmond anniversay but I only found out about it at Sammamish finding that location closed. I wanted to go to Sammamish not Redmond that day. Outside tables, whole area needs regular maintenance and cleaning. I forgot the fancy plastic fork. read more

We enjoyed the Bock beer and having a tasting flight is always fun but the beers in the flight weren't all to our liking. The empanadas were tasty but beware that the mushroom one has rosemary in it (I'm allergic) and I didn't notice that in the description. Fun environment! read more

Out on a beer bus tour of Sammamish area and this was one of our stops. The ambiance is great and was able to chat with the owner and really enjoyed our conversation chatting about, of course beer. Quite pleasantly surprised at how good the beer and selection is at "Big Block". There's a bit, well a lot of the classic car theme going on here. Has a large main area indoors and a cool outdoor beer garden going on too. I wasn't sure what to order since I planned on only one beer. But, the "Special Bitter" stood out to me as I've only seen it in cast at Machine House in Seattle and I wanted to do a comparison. Big Block Brewing is a great neighborhood brewery - especially if you actually live in the neighborhood since it's a little bit off the beaten path if not. I would give the atmosphere a 5 ratings easily, since the inside and patio defy its strip mall location. The automobile theme is extensive - from the piston tap handles to the machined aluminum table tops - there's plenty here to feast your eyes on for those that love cars. There's an RC track inside that looks particularly cool, but unfortunately when I visited it was out of order. However, I'd likely return just to see it in action. They even have a huge patio that I'm sure is rocking on sunny days. While the atmosphere is a 5, I have to give their beers a 3. My wife and I tried six different beers and none of them were particularly great in my opinion. I personally love Bourbon barrel aged beers, but the Bourbon barrel aged oatmeal stout on tap here is a bit too tart for my tastes. The bartender mentioned this before giving us a taste, so it was nice to get a heads-up on this. I also love IPA's, but the IPA here was also a bit too 'tangy' for my personal tastes as well. I settled on the nitro Pale, which clocks in at 7% ABV and has good mouth-feel due to the nitro, but again it wasn't spectacular. Having said this, beer is very subjective and just because I wasn't fond of the beers I tasted I'm sure others would certainly disagree. The staff were also very friendly so all in all I think this place is great. And If I'm in the neighborhood again I'd definitely give it another shot to see if I liked any of the newer beers on tap. If I did, this would be a 5 star brewery all the way. read more

Love the location! Literally 5 minute drive from the house and we have ourselves a great little getaway. The space is nice, clean, and large. The service was fantastic. Love the presentation of the tasting flights in custom made tool kits. Clever idea that matches the car sticking out of the wall. Best of all the beer is really good! They have a decent selection as well. Two rows of standards and two rows of rotational brews. A couple of the standards are award winning and it shows. I highly recommend the raspberry blonde (one of their winners). Also recommend the nut brown ale. At almost 10% alcohol, the barrel aged stout will floor you. They also display the bittering units. Very handy if you do not like bitter beers. The seasonal brews makes it interesting. We'll definitely be back to try the sour that they are planning for spring. Sours are my favorite type of beer. Sampled some of the grapefruit IPA as well and had to say it was equally tasty and refreshing. With PostDoc, Crucible, Flycaster, and others not only allowing dogs, but *featuring* them, I'm not sure why Big Block still hasn't gotten that worked out. I'd be here much more often. read more

If I could give this brewery more than 5 stars I would! The inside of the brewery is car themed and it is executed very well. Some of the lights are made from car parts and the sampler tray comes in a tool box. The beer here was excellent! I had the raspberry blonde. This was delicious. It had the perfect raspberry flavor and you could definitely tell that they used real raspberries. I also had the milk stout on nitro. This beer tasted light and wasn't too heavy. It was slightly sweet tasting and was an excellent beer. Plus I love almost anything on nitro. I like that this brewery is still small enough so that you can talk to the brewer who was really knowledgable and personable. Overall, this was an excellent brewery, I would definitely stop by here again sometime! read more

What an awesome microbrewery! The first time I came here I dropped by really quickly, to ask if they were selling WA Brewery Festival tickets that some breweries do, and they were! The only reason I didn't stay was because I was working out next door, so just wanted to get the tickets real quick and made it a note to visit for beer when I had more time. But in my most recent visit here - I came for a private party on a Monday night, a day the brewery isn't usually open, but was just open for the party, which was good to know. They do accommodate private parties - so just ask! They have a solid tap list of different beers, with two guest ciders. I only had the Double IPA, which the server mentioned is made with six different hops, and I loved it! It is definitely one to try if you like Imperial IPAs. I ended up sticking with that drink for most of the night, but saw that their samplers actually come in a tool box and you get up to five different samples. I later learned that the owner started his brewery from the garage of his home, so loved the idea of having the flights served in a tool box, to keep with the theme. Most of the decor here pretty much resembles just that, too, with traffic signs hanging around everywhere. Big Block Brewing only has bags of chips, but they allow you to bring your own food. Many people order from nearby Uncle Si's Pizza for delivery. As for the outdoor patio, it's huge! There is plenty of seating out on the patio, and makes for a nice time, hanging out with a beer in hand and lounging on one of the outdoor couches. I like to leave more stars because I want this to be a great place. The beer is great but the place needs a complete makeover. The patio is a bit of a car workshop area with a few old tires lying around, but they did not take it all the way. Now it just looks like some old junk joying around. Also I suggest the music selection is chosen to match the audience. Sammamish is a place of old people, few of those like hardrock I think. I will come back because I want it to succeed. But I am hoping on some major improvements to create an atmosphere. read more

Had a great, socially distanced, covid friendly date night in the back patio. We were treated like old friends - the bartender helped me make choices about which beers to put in my flight without rushing me. He even gave me a taster of pilsner on the house to cleanse my pallet between tastes! Also the empanadas were delicious and filling. These guys seem to be a light-hearted bunch out to have as much fun as possible while doing what they love. They've grown pretty quickly from a garage operation to a working strip mall brewery with a good-sized tasting room, full staff, and flat screens showing the game. They have the support of the neighborhood behind them, from what I can see. GPS routes you through houses on your way here, which might make you wonder for a second if they've already moved back into the garage. Nope. They're right behind the 7-11 on the south end of the lake parkway, and their parking lot seems to fill up pretty regularly. There are well over a dozen tables in the taproom, and probably half were taken when we got there. There's quite a bit of racing memorabilia scattered around, which suits a brewery named after a type of powerful car engine. There are lots of American muscle cars and race cars in photos, models, plaques, and so on, and the tables are custom-finished with a crossed-pistons logo. The merchandise case offers t-shirts that say "this beer isn't gonna drink itself," which is the slogan that seems to accompany virtually every Facebook post the brewery has ever made. They offer about a dozen different house-made beers. It's mostly American ale styles--pale, blond, ipa, porter, stout, with a bit of variety thrown in. You see honey, raspberry, chocolate, and other sweet additives pop up here and there on the menu. Their beers are clean and drinkable, but they're more of the neighborhood brewery variety, rather than the type that will be going for medals at world competitions (they are rightfully proud of their medals from a Washington beer competition). The prices are fair, and the staff here know how to answer all your questions. If you're in the neighborhood, it's a good place to stop in for a cold one. They have a big deck outside which must be nice for a pint in the summer. read more

I think this is going to be our weekend hangout place from now on! I heard this brewery started in the owner's garage.The owner brews all the beer from their garage and sells them at this place. The owner is super friendly and we've had one super friendly and nice bartender while the other was not as fun/nice. We see the owner sitting down with their guests and hang out with them. He is VERY fun to talk to. They also have an outdoor hangout area. They are slowly building it but we were told that the outdoor area will be up and running by the end of May 2016! The Raspberry Blonde is spectacular right now. The Brown is really tasty also, newest on menu. The also on the menu is a trifecta of brews using North Pacific Hops, Cascade, Chinook, sorry can't remember the third one, to many brews. But needless to say they all to say they all rock. BBB is having a Halloween party tonight, so dress up and go get some beer and have a great time. I'd be there to but worked all day and my feet are barking. I really liked the Blonde beer, coz am not a strong beer guy. My colleagues had their different porters which they said were pretty good. I also tried their award winning rasberry blonde, which i thought is a great dessert beer to try once.. They got no food.. But patrons can order great food from the Kryptonite bar next door.
