A little Sunday brunch with friends at a classic Big Boy hit just right. The service was welcoming, friendly and quick. The breakfast bar is a real winner. They have so many options at a really good price. It is all you could eat as well. This location keeps things clean and organized and I like the area of the restaurant that's more like an atrium. It brings in a lot of light. Of course , the classic Big boy combination with fries was just perfect. We also ordered the Slim Jim with onion rings and it is still a favorite. Big Boy was a staple growing up in Metro Detroit. We have one of the last full service locations around our area and decided to grab lunch. We were greeted by the usual sight of the old school Big Boy statue as we walked in. The restaurant looks like it had recently been updated and everything looked fresh and newer, which was a pleasant surprise. There is a salad and soup bar right in the middle which is not so common anymore, as well. The hostess sat us at a table near the big windows and brought us some menus. I ordered the Big Boy burger with onion rings and a drink. The Big Boy is like a better quality Big Mac, super traditional. My wife ordered the chicken Caesar wrap with fries. The Burger was really good and very fresh. However, the onion rings looked better than they were. They were not totally crispy and they were slightly sweet. My wife really enjoyed the Caesar wrap and the fries, which were nice and crispy. The dining room was filled with lots of regulars, mostly middle age and older folks. The interior is beautifully done, there's lots of natural light, and most importantly it is very clean. Service was incredible and the food came out so quickly. The salad/soup bar is very inviting and well stocked although I was not able to find a price on the menu. I opted for the chicken Caesar wrap with fries and although it was delicious I don't think there was a half chicken breasts worth of meat in the entire wrap. My husband ordered the Big Boy with onion rings which were oddly sweet, oily, and not the least bit crunchy. Everything fried tasted of fish which is a major allergen as well as the sesame seeds I found on the outside of my wrap. Not sure how we haven't been here before. A local icon. Super clean and great looking spot. Everyone was very pleasant. Very well managed. Everyone dressed in Tigers gear for Opening Day was nice. The menu has all of what you'd expect. All our dinners were delicious. There was a nice salad bar and tonight a seafood bar. Very good. Prices are reasonable. Can't go wrong here. I have been eating at the Big Boy chain for over 50 years and in 3 different states. I have eaten at this one off and on for 30 years. The menu has gotten smaller but they did try to keep most people favorites, but half of the menu is breakfast. This one has added pizza so I tried a personal size cheese which extra sauce and they brought the sauce on the side not on the pizza. I had no clue that I had to explain it?!?! My friends got the salad and soup bar. One said the price is a little high for the choices. Service was friendly but not always there. Besides freshing up the walls, it looks pretty much the same as always. Lots of parking. Since there are other places near to eat not sure when I will be back. read more

This Big Boy on Six Mile and Newburgh has new menu with better food to try. We went there with 10 people and we loved everything particularly service by Zeya! (I may have her name wrong due to me hearing but my taste buds are fine!) I had the potatoe pancakes which were plentiful (not hash browns) , wife tried the french toast with a side order of tasty bacon! Lady across from me ordered the slim Jim sandwich which he she said was excellent. One big guy tried the triple decker and could hardly hold it . He was previously not a Big Boy fan but loved his burger and fries . Ditto for the lady next to me who had the original Big Boy. She said it brought back old memories. Coffee was excellent. Could not see at far end of table but all agreed their lunch/breakfast was delicious and a good value for the money! Even a manager came by to check on us. We will be back for sure as we do monthly luncheons together! Very clean atmosphere, waitresses were on the move, this place has sincerely changed. Look at my other reviews ! Too bad we were. We had a great waitress but I can't remember her name. She was older and had told us that she had been in the business for almost 40 years. She was super friendly and extremely helpful. I used to go here for breakfast every weekend, I stopped going after some questionable billing. Went there today for lunch with a friend, he ordered a Club Sandwich and substituted Mashed Potatoes for the French Fries. He dish came out wrong (fries instead of mashed potatoes), and when the waitress returned she brought a dish to remove the French Fries before she would send out Mashed Potatoes. It is the first time in my life, or his that a restaurant who made the mistake is essentially accusing the customer for being dishonest. I would never spend one dime at this restaurant agin, nor would I recommend anyone to. read more

I called in an order and arrived to pick it up. I stood at the register for five minutes and NO ONE said a word or came over. However when people came in after me, a host and a server suddenly appeared to help them. I LEFT. I got a call a few hours later asking if I ordered a burger from the place. I said yes and told them they ignored me when I came to pick it up and I will never return. Hmmmm . . . . stopped in here the other night to pick up some take out for my mom. I came early so that I could get the food hot so they hadn't started packaging it when I arrived. I waited about 10 minutes and then was handed my bags. The soup was good. My mom's hot turkey dinner was not hot. The a la carte fries were also not hot. And the patty melt? Our friend big Mac and fries and he ate but he said it was was awful and it had a weird taste. pretty sure this was oil that had been way past its. It was like having food with sewer water on it. My husband and I ate here tonight! Our waitress was amazing and very sweet and kind! She had blonde hair with pink in it and beautiful nails! I wish I would have remembered her name now! Went to lunch with 6 other ladies. I ordered the Pizza. Everyone else received their food. I waited and waited. I asked the Server if there was a problem. She said they made a medium pizza instead of a personal pizza that I ordered and had to start over. I received my pizza when my friends were done eating. I took it home. This is a place is gross, the floor and tables has stuff every where. We were one of 3 tables of people so they were not busy. I received my soup and salad after my burger (?) odd. We were here about 2 hours and they never cleaned the surrounding tables and food pilled on the floor. We never received drink refills. So disappointed in this place last year and this year for Thanksgiving I ordered pies. Both times i go to pick them up and they have no record of the order and no pies doe me!!! Order a classic big boy burger and that's all you should have from this place. I ordered a superior big boy which is a bigger version of classic (it's not that big.. go with classic) and it was good and better than most burgers (two out of two of the stars I gave are just for the burger) However their breakfast menu is crap. We got hash brows as a side and it smells and tastes rancid. Place is not clean, waiter is not attentive, forgot our add ons we requested for our orders, and not to forget they gave us RANCID hash browns. This review is with regards to this Big Boy and the Breakfast Bar. Worst Big Boy experience yet, which is unexpected due to the nice area it is in. Went in and requested a specific table (for reasons I won't get into) but it was dirty with nobody available to clean it. We were told we could sit elsewhere and move when it was cleaned. Where we sat was fine, and we decided to stay, but we watched as that table plus the two next to it remained dirty for at least 20 minutes or so (mind you, it was not busy...just average amount of customers). Finally, the hostess came and cleaned them while saying she thought the waitress would have done it by now. Our waitress initially ignored us in favor of cleaning one table, and then upon taking our order, proceeded to make us wait over ten minutes for our water and coffee. During this time, she took another table's order and then stood around aimlessly for a bit. My fiance and I ordered the Breakfast Bar. The eggs tasted like the kind made from a powder, but were somewhat edible. The French toast and waffles were hard as a rock. The menu calls it a breakfast and fruit bar, but the fruit wasn't added until we were getting ready to go. It did include a salad bar, which was a nice touch, but after making myself a salad, something tasted extremely sour and I lost my appetite. ALL OF THE BREAKFAST MEAT WAS COLD. COLD. They had all of the breakfast meat up in the middle and not in the warming bins. We assumed that the platters the meat was on were heating platters and took some sausage, ham, bacon, and kielbasa. The kielbasa (not really a breakfast meat. Not complaining, but keeping it separate from what I referred to as breakfast meat) was good and warm. The others were cold and disgusting. The waitress did end up bringing me fresh meat from the kitchen, and when they finally brought out more waffles and French toast, the waffles weren't too bad. All in all, this was a terrible experience, which comes down to how a restaurant is managed. There is no excuse for leaving multiple tables dirty while guests sit at neighboring tables. There is no excuse for breakfast meat being cold. No excuse for making guests wait for drinks while standing around and doing other things. I will not be back. 100% not worth $30 for two people to eat crappy food and one person to drink a coffee. read more

It's freaking hot outside, and were coming in to eat and escape the heat, so he leads us to a far back corner in the atrium area, where there's no air, it's muggy and the sun is beating down on the area. Oh my gosh, Big Boy. It brings back such great memories. We used to have one about a minute from our house, and we went at least once a week when I was really young. We also knew everyone who worked there. This is the closest one to our house. While it's not the same, I still love their food. Their brawny lad is my favorite. But their garlic buttered bread is to die for. I think they only use the bread on a few sandwiches, but you can get it with spaghetti meals. The atmosphere is older, more quiet and laidback. And I've always liked their booths. Again, it could be just because of my fond memories there, but I will always be a huge Big Boy fan. read more

Stopped in here for breakfast with the wifey before Laurel Park Place mall opened up, thinking that a quiet breakfast would be cheap, good and quick. Little did I know we should have gone to Kerby's or Spangas Coney in the same general area for all those things. First we waited around 2 minutes for someone to come seat us... (time it yourself, it's a long time in a barely half-filled restaurant). Our server was pretty blah. Everything was pretty blah- we were the youngest customers in the entire place (every other table was a senior reading a paper and drinking a coffee). Then I noticed that they no longer had the blockbuster breakfast for 3.99 any longer... yes I understand food prices are going up... but if Coney's can still offer specials at 3.99, a big chain should be able to. The food was decent and for some odd reason, the lady cook came out to ask if we liked everything. Maybe she's new or something, I don't know... the eggs were standard, sausage links pretty bland... best part of the meal had to be the biscuit. And that's kind of generous. I noted that they now have an extra large Big Boy on the menu now, so I ordered it. Twice the deliciousness ---right? No, It was a mistake. It was good, but it loses some of the compact flavor that the classic has. If I'm being completely honest, I ate at this Big Boy because my preferred location at Plymouth and Farmington shut down and was converted in to another family-style restaurant. No bueno. It was only because we hadn't been to a Big Boy in a while that we ate here. So, why the already cynical tone? Well, everything was going fine until we walked in. The lights were so bright you would have though there were multiple police interrogations going on. It was crazy bright. Our server was pleasant...OVERLY pleasant. The amount of conversation went beyond casual and in to the unusual as he engaged not only us, but the 4 other tables around us in conversation at the same time. That was different. The menu is always the same. The biggest difference to this visit versus others is that the food was actually hot. I ordered a burger and fries. SOP for a visit to Big Boy. Also had the salad bar. This is about as traditional American as it gets. I've been coming here since I was a tot. Last visit I noticed that it recently got a facelift out of the 80's and into 2001. It's still an improvement as are some of the additions to the menu. I'll always love their Slim Jim but now they have a Slim Jim Club with turkey which piqued my interest but I just wasn't ready to commit to such a life altering change at this juncture. They used to offer eggs to order, now if you get the buffet at almost $14 (without a beverage) you only get the powdered egg variation. I hate this Big Boy. Every time I go here I have a horrible experience. One time, I went there with a friend and it was crazy busy. My friend and I are both waitresses, so we told the server not to worry and to get to us when she could. She thanked us profusely and ran off. We didn't see her again for 15 minutes. From experience, I know it doesn't take that long to catch up and at least get a drink order. Then I asked for cheddar broccoli soup, she came out with cream of ham or something. When I asked what happened, she said they didn't serve cheddar broccoli at that location and so she brought out ham instead. First of all it shouldn't say cheddar broccoli on the menu if they don't have it. Second, she should have known they didn't carry it and told me when I ordered. Instead, she randomly brought out a totally different kind of soup, maybe hoping I wouldn't notice? I did. So I went again and ordered a cheeseburger. They brought it to me with no cheese. I asked if they could put some cheese on it, after ten minutes brought me a slice of cheese on a plate. They could have at least taken the whole plate back and put it under a heat lamp so the cheese could melt onto my burger. I went again and saw that cheddar broccoli soup was still on the menu. I asked if they carried it now, the server said they did. She then brought me the ham soup again. I went again and ordered a four cheese pasta, it was super dry and tasted like it spent fifteen minutes waiting under the heat lamp. I have given this place too many chances. This might be a little biased since it was on New Year's day... Overall the experience was mediocre. I was admittedly there with a party of 13. Naturally it took us 1:15 to get our food, and another ~10 minutes to get silverware, which was somehow forgotten. In the over hour wait, the waitress only stopped by once (refilling drinks). The food was brought out and not a single individual had warm food. On a personal note, I had the cinnamon apple French toast, which was more of soggy toast doused in a sugar water syrup. I ate out of hunger, but to say it was sweet or delicious is probably inaccurate. Several other orders weren't quite correct. We would have appreciated some apology or acknowledgement of the short staffing situation or slow service, but not even that was offered.
