We went to Gaylord and the service was so-so. We were there with a group of 9. Ordered an omelette not brown at all and so the cook turned into inside out where the brown part was inside. Hubby ordered swiss/mushroom cheese burger and said it was pretty good, but couldn't enjoy because the place is so dingy and less than clean. Shandalynn our server and manager Max were awesome! The chicken and waffles were excellent the maple syrup had great flavor the fried fish was very good. Just had breakfast and wanted to offer a suggestion but none of the staff asked me how my meal was, so I'll offer them here. I ordered a farmers omelette. we went to go to big boy to visit our best friend who newly started working there. as soon as we walk in our server asks us what we want doesn't try to start a friendly conversation or anything. her name was Sarah she takes us to our seats and throws the menus at us and asks what we want to drink. she brings us our water and asks what we want to order. we asked for more time and she rolled her eyes and walked away. she comes back and takes our order and the Workers there would not stop staring at us our entire visit and made us feel VERY uncomfortable. She brings us our pie and walks away we thank her for giving us two spoons and she said she figured we were sharing which was the nicest thing she did our entire visit. She brings us our tab and walks away. Our friend who we were there to visit sits down and talks to us while he's on his break as we go to pay our tab. I ask for a to go box and sarah our waitress brings it to me and as we are walking away she said next time you guys come here just visit your friend if you can't afford anything on the menu. I felt very uncomfortable after that and didn't even know how to respond. It looks normal on the outside but it's gross once you walk in the door. It smells like a nasty daycare. The carpet has food ground into it. The only think that was edible was the slaw and mashed potatoes. You could squeeze the grease out of the fish. The fries were cold, I could go on. Just gross. The server was very nice. read more

Service was decent nice server. But it took an hour to get our food. We came in a group of 6 one person got the breakfast bar. The rest of us just got simple breakfasts. So confused why a bunch of tables with parties of 3-6 were getting food before us when they sat down after us. Got an appetizer came out 10 min before the food came. Stopped for breakfast on a Saturday understanding service might be a little slow as almost every table was full. We both ordered off the menu as the breakfast buffet looked less than appetizing. Coffee was hot and fresh, unfortunately, that was the last hot item we received. Both of our meals were lukewarm at best and our sausage links were so over cooked that leather would have been better. Not sure what is going on at this location. Big Boys are usually pretty reliable places to stop for a decent meal. This one must not have gotten the memo. We were seated quickly and our drinks delivered, and after that things went downhill. Our original server comes over and says, "They are kicking me out of here, so someone else will be taking care of you." The server that took over took out food order, and then would completely forget about us. When our food came, one of our entrees was missing. She forgot to put it in. She forgot side items, messed up drink refills, and generally seemed "elsewhere". We give a lot of slack to restaurants because of the ongoing staffing challenges, but the manager shouldn't have sent our original server home if he was short staffed. Clearly they needed help. Think twice about stopping here on your way up north. read more

Stopped in at the Gaylord location... Husband has a medical rx from Licensed Doctor as to why he can't wear a mask and i can receive a felony for wearing a mask... The employees all stated and pointed and said, "You need a mask" he held one up to his face while I reluctantly put one on against my better judgement... Please keep in mind my husband lost his 13 year old son in a farming accident many year ago.. his sons favorite restaurant was Big Boy's... which is the ONLY reason we stopped!!! They seated us at a table 6' from entry. 6' from the entry??? Half way thru our breakfast an elderly couple.. late 80's entered the restaurant... it took them 10 min to get in the door... they were greeted with finger pointing and rudeness by each and every front line employee. Pointing and asserting "You need a Mask" .. my question remains... if your mask and plexiglass is working, why are you so concerned by this older couple?? Is your mask not working? Where is the compassion or question as to why they didn't have their masks on?? Medical perhaps?? Even a couple of dumb bunnies like us could see the extreme effort it took for them to enter the establishment. The couple left, hungry... we were unable to finish our breakfast, paid and left... We should have gotten up and moved our table to the elderly couple, we should have stood up for them... we did neither and are deeply ashamed for our lack of action!!! I have emailed 2x to Big Boy Restaurant in Gaylord MI and have received NO response... I am a Small Business owner in Lower MI... If any of my employees treated any customer with such poor customer support?? customer appreciation?? lack of compassion they would be looking for another job.!! I only gave this one star because zero stars wasn't an option. When we arrive two of the workers were arguing, we didn't receive silverware, the bathrooms were dirty, the floor was dirty. We watched our waitress cough in her hand, rub her forehead and her nose before loading her trays to deliver. The food was gross. We ate a couple bites and left. Had to stop in here because both my husband and I hadn't been to a big boy in over 20 years since it's no longer in our area. Pleasantly surprised! We were helped by a gentleman named Jim who is one of the best waiters we've ever had. Kind, quick, efficient! We both had the classic big boy and were very happy with it. The facility was also very clean. The cook also came out and asked everyone how their meal was. My only critique is the menues themselves were rather sticky. But I'm not gonna hold that against them. I love stopping by big boy restaurants when I go up north in Michigan and stopped by the Gaylord location. We were greeted by a nice and funny waitress. She was awesome and is so quick and sharp with her humor. The food came out quickly and was nice, hot, and great. Everything is all clean and nice big dining room. read more

Went in to the bathroom to find a busboy using the toilet, only to leave without washing his hands. He then handled a lot of silverware. Rather disgusting. My husband and I ate dinner at the Gaylord Big Boy last night. I had my small service dog Lacey with me. Only our waitress knew she was with me. Our waitress was fantastic and the food was very good. As we were leaving people in the resteraunt were eating their meals and paying no attention to me or my service animal until a male waiter loudly started making comments over and over he couldn't believe those people brought a dog into the resteraunt. Then everyone in the resteraunt was paying attention. This was uncalled for by an employee anywhere. I have had a service animal for several years and have never been subjected to being treated this way. We will never go to your resteraunt again. Updated review below on original review: I've been here each of the last two summers for lunch. Each time service was just okay and the food was about the same. We decided to give it another try the following summer to see if it had improved at all, but it hadn't. I've been to worse, but I've definitely been to better. Updated on July 17, 2020: Came here again on our annual trip to Gaylord. Service was worse than our previous trips here. Food took between 30-35 minutes to come out with 7 total tables in the restaurant. We ordered a burger, chicken tenders, an omelette and a side of hash browns..... Just ordered 2 slim Jim's at Big Boy on 23 mile, New Baltimore....they gave us 2 big boys. I hate hamburger and it was a 18 mile round trip drive. When I called them, the manager said...BRING THEM BACK...isn't that ILLEGAL...if they didn't believe it, all they had to do was have us text them a photo of their 2 bigboys in their styrofoam containers instead of 2 wrapped slim Jim's that we were supposed to receive.
