The ranch dressing was very bland and had almost no flavor to it so it was meh. The wings were good and flavorful. They are advertised as brined and smoked and they delivered on that. Carligh our server took care of our whole party very well. Quick with some chips and queso sauce for the table. Had a question on one of the menu items and she seemed very knowledgeable. For food, we had the smoked wings with buffalo sauce, the nachos with chicken and all the fixins, the peach feta salad and I had the chili, and my friend had the corned beef sandwich and chips. Everything tasted good and was fresh - the wings needed seasoning, but they were smoky and perfectly cooked - crispy and juicy. Yummy sauce. The nachos were particularly good - homemade cheese sauce, fresh chips, delicious. The peach feta salad was perfect, though probably even better during peach season, and the chili was exactly what I was looking for. Hot, savory, delicious. Love the beer flights, lots of great beer options and good pricing on the flights as well. Very disappointing experience. Our waitress disappeared and wasn't attentive. She was hanging at the bar chatting with locals and left us with no drink refills. The food was very mid. Service was good. Food, not so much. I had the cowboy BBQ chicken sandwich. The chicken was at least 1 1/2" thick so I decided to slice it lengthwise with the steak knife they brought to make it thinner to bite into. First, I could barely cut it so I thought the knife must be dull. Then I realized I could barely BITE it. It hurt my teeth trying to bite into it. It was like biting into a super tough piece of jerky! Every bite I took left tough strings of chicken between all my teeth (and I don't have noticeable gaps in my teeth) the only thing we could assume is that this chicken was either freezer burned or microwave cooked. The worst chicken I've ever had in a restaurant. Will not waste my money there again. The drink (can't remember what I had) but it was small for the price and not good enough to remember the name apparently husband got the nachos-- they were fine, but when we asked if we could get the chips on the side (a new life hack we learned) they said they wouldn't recommend it because the cheese would just burn into the meat when they put it in pizza oven maybe they could NOT put it in oven OR push it through a bit when they put it in (if it's a conveyor oven) or get it out sooner if it's a stone/regular oven whatever, he just had them make them with the chips so as not to confuse them. Having driven by this brewery on our way to Boyne Mountain, we decided it was finally time to stop and check it out. With a nice selection of appetizers, sandwiches and such, it was a great choice for a late lunch. We picked a variety of beers and ciders to create our own "rack" (flight). We also shared amazing loaded sweet potato fries, pretzel sticks with killer beer cheese and funnel cake fries. Everything was full of flavor, fresh and delicious. I've been to the big Buck brewery many times and keep hoping it's going to be a good dining experience, but it never really is. I know that sounds harsh but the food just is not very good. I've ordered simple things like burgers and nicer dishes like fish and steaks, and it always seems to disappoint. It just doesn't taste good. The presentation is always fine but the flavor is just not there. The atmosphere of the restaurant is great. I love the whole lodge vibe that it's got going on. It's reminiscent of places. I've been in crested Butte and Vail from an atmosphere perspective. And their beers are pretty good too. I'm particularly fond of the IPA. And I can honestly say I've never had bad service. All in all, it's a fun place to go for a few beers with friends, but the food just falls really short for me. If they can improve the menu, this place could easily be four stars for me. read more

What a great place! I loved the hunting lodge feel with the large, open space and high ceilings. The themed, high-quality furniture is comfortable and the decor is so cute no matter where you look. I did something I have never done before!! I asked to talk to the chef!! Guys... seriously, if you're coming through Gaylord, MI the Big Buck Brewery is a MUST STOP!! As many of you know I had Covid in December and my palate has not been right since. I've been to other smokehouses and just really had a hard time picking up on the smoke. I feel like I'm learning to walk all over again but instead I have to retrain my palate which is fully dependent on actually getting good food done right!! So today I HAD to talk to the chef as I felt an overwhelming need to thank him for reminding my palate what a good smoke should taste like! I was in smoke heaven over here. I had the smoked honey glazed half chicken with vegetables, and sweet potato waffle fries. I couldn't pick up on the honey glaze at all but the smoke on the chicken was so perfect and tasty I could care less. If you can, order a sauce on the side for a little more sweetness and/or kick. The cook and seasoning on the vegetables was PERFECT!! Not too mushy! The crispy waffle fries aren't a huge feat but good nonetheless. My only suggestion is to have a house sauce for the waffle fries. A good go to is brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter. Simple and yummy. My husband had a burger and the cook on that was perfect as well!! Crystol was our server and she was truly phenomenal!! As soon as she heard I had a gluten intolerance, she checked everything! Even the label on the honey mustard! She was attentive and kind. Everything you could want in a server!! I'm giving this location 5 stars because the ambiance and cleanliness are also on point!! And if you are considering getting the ravioli, just don't. Generous portion but there is so much sauce on it you can even see them. I have a fondness for Big Buck Brewery, as my (now) husband and I used to go there when they first opened. Living downstate, we often stop in on our travels to visit up north family. Tonight, however, our experience was unsatisfactory. It is my mom's 81st birthday, and she requested that we drive the hour to Big Buck for dinner. The wait was reasonable and the staff friendly. Our waitress was on top of things and personable. My first choice entree, the walleye, was unavailable, so I went with the chicken primavera. It was okay, but nothing special and somewhat bland. We had ordered soup and an appetizer, though, so I ate a little under half of it and asked for a box the take the rest home. As I was transferring the food from pasta bowl to the box, I saw a dark hair there in the food. I froze and tried not to think of the fact that I had been eating that food. I was entirely grossed out. When the waitress came back, I pointed out the hair to her. She told her manager about it and returned, informing me that she had said that she couldn't take the entree off the bill because I "had eaten most of it." Not true, but whatever. She did offer us one dessert to take home, which I declined, as I was no longer even close to being ready to eat again. As someone who.worked in customer service for many years, I am disappointed in the manager's handling of this situation. I wasn't trying to scam the restaurant out of a meal, but taking it off the bill would have been the right thing to do. I guess I should have reacted just as inappropriately and announced my disgust so that the rest of the patrons could hear. I definitely will not be quick to return. read more

The restaurant dining area definitely has a Wow factor, beautiful high ceilings, wood beams, windows overlooking the brewery steel drums and an also an outdoor patio. The beer is good. I tried a flight of 6 which was most of their tap list. I really enjoyed the amber ale but my favorite by far was the double rhapsody double IPA. The food is OUTSTANDING! I had never been to the original Big Bucks when the chain was still around. Being a fan of craft beer, I was intrigued to visit the lone remaining location, which was sold a few years ago. The inside has hunting lodge vibes, but on a low-key level. It definitely has a 90s vibe to it and is showing its age in places. I had a summer slice beer, which has pineapple in it, but couldn't quite taste even a hint of it. It was a very okay beer. On Sundays, they have a limited menu consisting of bbq, so I ordered the ribs which came with mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese. All was fairly tasty, but nothing special. The service was all very young and inexperienced, which caused a few road bumps. I understand that during covid, staffing has been exceptionally challenging, so I didn't hold it against them. The one shining spot was their merchandise. Although I didn't get anything, they had super cool shirt designs. Their can designs are also great. I wouldn't consider Big Buck to be a must-do based on my experience, but it's worth stopping in for a beer after playing mini golf next door or to get the brewery "credit". read more

We stopped in Big Buck on our way to Petoskey. We used to have a Big Buck closer to us, but they closed down so it's been years since I've stepped foot into a Big Buck. I'm surprised I haven't reviewed this yet as we've been here I think three times now...basically every time we've stopped in Gaylord. It's maybe not a favorite, but it's definitely a good place to go, though I probably waffle between 3 and 4 stars as opposed to being a straight 4 star affair. The cons on this place are basically two things: Service was slow especially for 4:30-5:00 on a Friday. This is a minor con because they were busy and the two bartenders weren't goofing off or anything. They were pleasant and handled everything, just busy so it took a while to keep things moving. The only other real con I have as the bar - it could seat a lot more people and if you're not lucky you'll get a chair that has a carved duck on the bar, that makes it awkward. Sure, it looks cool and woodsy but it's kind of a pain, but not that big a deal. The Pros? It's a brewery. It has a very large outdoorsman type of a appeal, with that kind of decor, including a large antler chandelier above the bar. It's busy, in a 'all the locals are here' kind of good way. I wouldn't say their beers and bourbon are the best (they aren't) but they are good and the IPA I had was eminently drinkable (Double Rhapsody double IPA). Their food is also good, and probably the biggest reason I would go 4 star. I don't remember what we had previously (probably the Reuben) but this time around we had the Garlic Cheese Sticks. Now, this is really cheese bread, not something I'd normally order but what the girlfriend wants...and I've had some seriously good cheese bread...but this is a standout item for me. It basically is served like a big pizza and it was awesome. the dough was great, the cheese was really melted with just the right amount of greasy goodness, and it had so much flavor...was it basil, parmesan, garlic? First time at the Big Buck but I had driven past it many times. We had a party of 6 and received great service. However, the food left everyone just a little disappointed. Multiple members of our party got pizzas and everyone seemed to have the same opinion that the marinara sauce was really lacking in flavor.
