The prices are comparable to most other ice cream places in OBX, but this is homemade. I personally had a scoop of chocolate marshmallow and a scoop of cake batter on a waffle cone. It was very yummy. My boyfriend got a frozen sea salted double espresso caramel drink, and it was very good also. Their hours in Google Maps showed they closed at 5pm today and we arrived at 4pm with a van load of kids (9 total). We were ready to treat the whole family to some local homemade ice cream. That's 5 boys (two of which are teens) and 2 adults who decided that the level of customer service was so despicable that we would rather just get Frostys at Wendy's instead of putting up with a worker who apparently thought that coming in an hour before closing was too much of a hassle for his late afternoon plans. The ice cream is pretty good, but i wasn't a fan of the specials. There is no description to tell you what each one is. I ordered a banana split assuming it would be pretty standard, but asked if i might have two specific flavors of ice cream. When it came, i got a split with my flavors of choice and a bonus strawberry sorbet...a flavor i didn't want, hadn't asked for, and which didn't remotely fit with the rest of the split. I pointed this out and was told "oh, but its standard...". No offer to exchange that flavor was extended. On my second time passing the store, we finally decided to go inside because it was considerably less crowded than it had been before. They are very accommodating with various options to order in response to coronavirus, there was a walk up counter an an inside option with a limited amount of customers inside at a time. I would be doing a major disservice to other yelp users and their families if I didn't review this place properly...not sure how this place has a semi decent rating... After spending a warm gorgeous day at the beach over Labor Day weekend ice cream sounded like an excellent idea...I let yelp guide us a to spot called Big Johns...unfortunately they had just closed for the day (apparently they have very limited hours towards the end of summer) the next closest place was Big Bucks Ice Cream. I really wish we'd have just gone to Food Lion and bought a gallon of ice cream to take back to the rental. (for the money we spent at Big Bucks we could have actually bought 4-5 gallons of ice cream) The shop itself is very small and the way they have the tables set up doesn't help matters. They have 2-3 tables placed almost right in front of the ice cream counter so if people are sitting at the tables its really difficult to see the flavors. The girls that were scooping ice cream the day we were there were extremely rude. They were rolling their eyes and being very curt when little kids would ask questions about flavors or ask to try flavors...which I get has to be annoying but come on it kinda comes w/ having a so called specialty home made ice cream shop. We got 4 small scoops of their hand dipped homemade ice cream for roughly $20. 1 scoop of butter pecan (terrible, tasted super fake and chemically almost. way too much extract or something) 2 scoops of cookies and cream (tasted similar to breyers) 1 scoop of salted caramel pretzel (good but the pretzels were extremely stale) None of the flavors we had or sampled were of good enough quality to charge $5 a scoop. Stopped in here on a whim as google maps said it was the closest Ice cream place to where we were. Then came to yelp and saw it only had a few stars and was a little nervous. Went in and was served quickly i got the espresso chip ice cream and it was delicious! Had a great coffee flavor and the espresso chips you could tell weren't just chocolate chips mixed in! The flavor wasn't bad to be fair, but the ice cream was watered down and not nearly as creamy as I would expect when I'm paying $5 per scoop.
