New in town and was craving croissant and Cafe au lait and this place hit the spot. They had plain or chocolate croissants (REALLY wanted almond but oh well) and went for the chocolate. Croissant was flaky and delicious. Cafe au lait was smooth and perfect, didn't need to add any sugar it was so good. Also had mushroom, spinach, gruyer omlette which was done well. Parking is limited in the neighborhood, but I would definitely walk a distance for the Cafe au lait. Nice cozy interior and patio seating, which will be nice once the rain stops. This is one of my favorite spots in Athens, largely due to the patio. I have made a habit of enjoying leisurely breakfasts on the patio beneath the shade of the trees. In winter, they occasionally have a portable fire pit going to keep you warm. There is always an eclectic mix of families, students, rock stars, Boulevard hipsters and retirees. Dogs are welcome. Sidewalk chalk is provided free of charge. In addition to my love of the patio, the food keeps me coming back. I stick to the basics for breakfast: sausage or egg biscuits and coffee. However, when I have ventured beyond these favorites, I have been pleasantly surprised. They have a great yogurt topped with raspberry preserves. For lunch, my favorite find has been the black bean sandwich. It is served on toasted ciabatta with spinach and sweet potatoes. Also, the BBQ pork with cheese is a solid performer. As some reviewers have mentioned, it can be a little pricey, but it's well worth it for the wholesome atmosphere and unique flavors. read more

This was probably the worst experience I've had in a long time. The service was very poor. I ordered food and a drink that was not available. Instead of letting me know, the cashier took my payment and gave me a number. About 10 minutes later, a woman (maybe a manager) comes over to tell me that I'll have to stand in line again just to get a Coke. Sadly, this place has gone downhill. I've tried a bunch of specials and things and they're all meh to egh. The ambience inside feels like it needs a facelift, or some sort of cohesive redesign/vibe. They still do a good burger, though they seem to try so hard to be more than just a burger place that they bury this fact. You go here because the food is good, not because the service is good. As for food, I've never had anything bad. Their vegetable dishes are fantastic. The kids burger is great. The patio is a fun place to sit, but there is the occasional smoker who can ruin it for everyone. But what makes this place hard to visit is the service. First, I've never had the food take less than 30 minutes to prepare. So make sure you have plenty of time. Second, the staff in general just doesn't seem to care. Not helpful. Not friendly. I've got a number of stories, but I'll leave it at that. On Saturdays, lunch is served from noon on. Don't dare try to order at 11:50. They won't let you order and you'll have to wait. Never mind that by the time the order gets through to the kitchen it will be noon. Nope. You wait and then go to the back of the line once the magical hour arrives and work your way back up. Again, food is some of the best I've had of its kind in Athens, but the service is bad. read more

Passing through Athens for a concert at the GA Theatre I was delighted to find this place. It was the perfect atmosphere for our large group that was looking to indulge after a late night. First off I LOVE the menu. They have a continental section that lets you pick three items for just $7.50. I chose french toast, herb potatoes, and yoghurt. All just $7.50. It's a wait in line, order, pay and receive a number, than sit kind of place and even though the line was a little daunting it moved fairly quickly and employes seemed to move efficiently. Seating was limited but we were able to snag a spot on the outdoor patio which is in a cute little courtyard area bordered by trees. Dog-friendly and people of all shapes, sizes, ages, and colors were sharing a meal and laughs. Great casual and laid back atmosphere, very representative of the town of Athens. You can tell it's UGA favorite. Will definitely be returning next time I'm in the area! read more

After a night out in Athens, I walked into Big City Bread Cafe with my friends, starving and nauseated. The wait on the Sunday morning was a bit long, but definitely shorter than a lot of the other popular breakfast options in the area. I ordered a biscuit with sausage and egg with a side of fresh fruit, and all of it was fantastic! I guess I should have expected the biscuits to be amazing, the place being called "Big City Bread Cafe" and all. I haven't tried anything else here, but I'm going to guess that as long as you get some form of baked good, you'll have a good experience. Seriously. Went in on a saturday for 11am breakfast. Easy order up counter and seat with a number and food brought to your table. Small seating area but moves quickly. If good weather plenty of outdoor seating. AKA Big City bread, this cafe is near downtown and has a great patio, with trees and lots of colored lights--in fact, the building itself is more for the baking and the buying, but there is not much room for sitting. The cheese plate is fun because they have a small grocery area where you can pick out your cheeses, and it is more cheese than 4 people could conscionably consume. But the little birds that are always nearby can always come eat your leftovers if you can't finish. Vegan cookies abound, as well as more sinful desserts and a variety of coffee and tea. This is, incidentally, one of the places where I saw Michael Stipe while I lived in Athens, but their lemon tahini salad dressing is worth an entire visit in itself. read more

I love big city bread. I've been here breakfast, lunch, and dinner and have enjoyed it all. The staff is friendly and I've never had to wait long for my food. The atmosphere is warm, and I like being able to have my dog sit outside with me :) Love the biscuits and jam for breakfast. Love the turkey sandwich- the peach really adds something. Love their ham sandwiches and their lamb burger is extraordinarily delicious. Love their scones, their flour-less chocolate torte, their raspberry bars, and all of their bread!!! I miss school, just because of this place. Big city bread served as my little vacation away from UGA with its delicious treats and expertly made espresso coffee, lattes, and cappuccinos. I loved indulging on their Orange Polenta cookids and their Orangina on occassions I needed extra cheering up. Went for breakfast for the first time, had the eggs benedict. The good news is that the dish was tasty. The bad news is that they did not properly poach the eggs, cooking them for too long and reducing them to something closer to a hard boiled egg. One basic test for how good the cook is is how well they can do a poached egg, and they did not succeed on this measure, which was disappointing. The side order of bacon was tasty, though. The sausage biscuit with cheddar cheese was one of the best breakfast biscuits I have ever had! The atmosphere is great - very comfy and frequented by locals. I didn't try any of the desserts on display which is my only regret, but I will definitely be back to do so. Food was OK overall. Got the hummus as starters -- was very tasty. The baguette that came with it was really fresh and soft. Then we also got the salad with "trout" and the pizza. The "trout" is in quotes because they served up salmon, which would have been acceptable, but nobody informed us. It was a surprise but we were more insulted at the notion that they thought we wouldn't know the difference. Secondly, the salmon was not fresh at all, and had a bit of a funny smell. The pizza was decent, except the arugula was basically a balled up piece of mess that just sat on top of the pizza. What really irked us, though, was the waiter. After bringing our food, he never came back to ask if we needed anything, and our water cups were empty the entire time. We decided to go in to pay, as we were going to get some tea to go, and apparently he was really upset at the amount of tip he got for another table, as he said out loud, "Are you kidding me?" Which really made us feel awkward, as I left him the standard 15% (though begrudgingly) and wondered if I had done something wrong. Then he left us standing there with a tea bag, an empty cup, and no hot water. Fortunately another staff member helped us who was very nice. I don't want to experience this again. read more
