Sausage, seafood, and rabbit gumbo amazing and does not taste gamey. Was seasoned to perfection, along with a half arugula salad with good roasted tomatoes on top. My mom got the chicken salad sandwich which is always hit or miss with her and she loved it! (But if you do not like blue cheese do not get it.) The piece of bread that comes on the side I'm guessing sourdough was fresh moist and delicious as well! The atmosphere is such a cozy farm to table local feel and is a great place to study, have a long lunch date, but I bet at night could become a lively night stop for great socialization spot. I have long enjoyed BCB for meals - breakfast, lunch and dinner - and have always had a great experience with yummy food, attentive service and a lovely atmosphere. I am writing today with many thanks for the wonderful food BCB enabled me to serve to a dozen dinner guests with their great catering service! Everyone raved about the food - from the hummus to the tomato soup to the quiche! The gluten-free peanut butter cookies and brownies were particular dessert favorites, so kudos to the bakery, too! I ordered the quiche and they only gave me one slice. "The board doesn't say slice of quiche - $10.50" it says "Quiche - $10.50" for $10.50 I expect the whole quiche. Group of very angry Democrats gather in this joint on weekday mornings. When I went to my table with a red sweater on, I mentioned to the group that it was an interesting election. They immediately got nasty because I voted for Trump using profanity. When I raised the issue with the store personnel, they sided with the Dems because of their daily loyalty and asked me to leave. What's unfortunate is that the place does have good food and coffee. No complaints there. Just remember, an Environmentally-anchored restaurant in the Socialist Republic of Athens is just not going to welcome in diversity unless the diversity marches to the beat of their political persuasions! read more

Just experienced this little gem for the first time. Excellent food. Went with the chicken salad sandwich. Definitely has a distinct taste. I have been to Big City Bread several times over the past few years--and, while the food can be alright--the experience of going there is just miserable. This is because, as many have mentioned, at least fifty percent of the staff are rude and service is generally terrible. I went there for lunch today and I am fed up. I ordered a half salad and I had to wait for more than 40 minutes. Finally, we asked the waiter (or maybe it was the manager) for an update on the order and he said we were next in line and that it would be one more minute. Several people actually received their order before I did and it took between five and ten minutes. Not everyone on the staff is rude, but there really is a general feeling of the staff not caring about their customers. I've had similar experiences many times at Big City and will not be returning. read more

My favorite place in Athens so far! Very Bohemian, but they fix up tasty healthy foods as well as traditional Southern comfort foods. Best grits in Athens. Their baked goods are pure heaven....totally satisfying and indulgent. I love this place!!! Every time I am in Athens, I always grab breakfast done Big CIty Cafe! I love their biscuits and their coffee!

I love the outdoor patio with christmas lights strung up in the trees, and the local art hanging on the brick walls inside. Little candles on the dinning room tables and the sidewalk chalk bucket outside let me know that it's classy and comfortable. The dessert cases are fastidious and a marvel to the eyes. Exquisite desserts and pastries line the shelves, so many varieties that I can't even just get one; I end up with three or four to compliment a piping hot cappuccino. The menu is inventive, and I love the flat-breads; essentially a gourmet square pizza sans superflous cheese, topped with an airy, delicate salad. So many flavors in one bite, and so, so fresh! We meet there sometimes for book club, eating pastries and sipping tea with several babies in tow; I also went to celebrate my last birthday with my husband and found a quiet, romantic, decadent experience I hadn't really expected. And by the way, all their pastries, breads, muffins, etc. - made fresh daily and always a new thing to try. So go on, try! read more

With great sandwiches and an interesting dining area (inside and out), this is one of my favorite lunch spots in Athens. Their black bean sandwich is a very good staple that I only forgo when they offer an amazing special among their lunch items. Additionally, it's one of the few places in town you can get an AJC or New York Times to read with your coffee and muffin in the morning. The outdoor patio is friendly to pets and kids. And the restrooms are clean. The only downside is that most of the parking is on the street, so you may have to walk a while if nearby spaces are full. (The Wendy's next door has threatened to boot non-customer cars parked in their lot but I've sneaked in there a few times). read more

Big city bread was one of my favorite restaurant in Athens and actually I spent the most money here. I recommend to choose this place for dinner. I didn't really like lunch menu and food quality which was mostly not enough portion or lower quality. They could make sandwich much better. For brunch onetime, I ordered french toast and the thing came out was hard baguette dipped in to some sweets and cinnamon and little bit of salad. Very disappointing. Good choices are burgers, mussels, flat bread pizza for dinner and deserts. Double chocolate cookie is tiny and each $2.00 but it worth. Rustic fruit tart, two bite size cheese cake and star shape chocolate cake are very good. Their asiago cheese and sesame flat bread is my favorite. Another complain is their saute menus are very salty. They use fresh vegetables and seafood but always if it's sauteed, any menu became salty. Servers are very helpful and kind and the atmosphere for dinner is nice and quite. read more

The lamb burger I had here last night was the tastiest "sandwich" of any kind that I've had in a long, long time! The meat was outstanding and cooked perfectly and the various toppings combined to make this a burger that I look forward to having again and again. If you like lamb, do yourself a big favor and get yourself one and don't change a thing about the way it is served. It is perfection! Went here with my 15 YO daughter based on the reviews we read. Menu is very diverse with a lot of interesting options. I had 2 eggs with sausage and veggie potatoes. The veggie potatoes are really good. My daughter had an omelette and hash browns. The food and service was excellent. The portions are huge. Each plate really would feed 2-3 people. read more

The biscuits are amazing and the price is right too (egg and cheese for about 4 bucks). All the pastries that you see while you wait look great and the loaves of bread before the register are huge and only $5 a pop. He is my problem with this place: I've only been on Sundays and the line at any point once they open is around a 30 to 45 minute wait. Here's the secret to this place if you don't mind being "those people", have one person stand in line, one person go ahead and grab a table (even though it'll be 40 minutes before your friends join you and there are 20 parties in front of you that will order and receive food before you) and just have anyone else in your party just show up about 30 minutes later and they'll get there just in time to cut in front of 30 people that have been waiting like normal people do and order their food without a wait. This scenario happens to us every time we go two or three times before we place our order. If you can't tell, "those people" are the worst and really makes it hard to choose this place over Mama's Boy if given a choice. Once you do order your food it only takes about 5 minutes to get your food so that part of the experience is good. Also, they don't serve alcohol on Sunday at all, how am I supposed to start my Sunday Funday that way?? Literally the only reason this place gets the 4th star is because as we were leaving we ran into Kirby Smart who was stopping in to eat, hopefully they just let him cut straight to the front of the line to minimize his wait. read more

Went for lunch this past Saturday after not having been there for over a year - won't be going back. Aside from having to hunt for a parking space and standing in line for about 20 minutes just to place our order because the employees at the register appeared to be completely disorganized, the food was totally lacking. I had a cup of tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich. The soup tasted like someone had just opened a can of low sodium tomato sauce, heated it up and tossed in a few croutons and a spoonful of goat cheese-mediocre and BLAND. The grilled cheese was just barely warm much less melted. Don't waste your time or money here. read more

If you have small kids, a must visit!!!! We went here on a trip to Athens after discovering The Grit doesn't open til 10 for breakfast Saturday. I used to come to Big city Bread when I was in college 10 years ago, and didn't remember much about it. What a great place to go with young kids for quality food! The menu isn't huge and slightly pricey I would guess for the area (we just moved back from CA so to us seemed normal though), but the food is wholesome and the selection of breads and pastries is wonderful. The best part is the patio outside, we got there at 8:45 and it was just locals with their dogs and couples with little kids running around, sidewalk chalk in hand. Excellent, fast service in very clean facilities. Quiche was excellent, french toast amazing, Most of all great atmosphere. The only reason I took off a star is little parking and small menu (which didn't bother me but might bother some). Wish I lived around the corner from this place!!! Well the biggest hit of the place was like the website said (unlike my first choice) they were open. My order was something a Waffle House cook could do blind folded while three old ladies yell random things at him and some how this place just missed the mark all around. First thing my and companions food arrived at very different times, hers after first taking a tour of the dinning room. Second if you are going to serve French bread French toast be a sport and don't have her saw through it with a butter knife, third over easy eggs somehow were over hard , potatoes were fried but yet somehow random raw in center and finally I know I ordered extra crispy bacon so shot for bacon that is at least crispy. Was not unusually busy so don't see the hang ups. I guess maybe today it was just the blind leading the tired. I still recommend as normally this place is dam good so we all are allowed a speed bump hopefully it does not turn into a mountain. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Athens. We try to eat on the patio when possible, even when it is chilly and they have a fire outside. The food is always good, and the ambiance changes throughout the day and night. Breakfast and lunch are informal, times to linger over coffee and the paper and discuss things with friends and family. Dinner is more formal with wine and cloth napkins. The food is always good, and as a vegetarian I appreciate the inclusion of food I can eat. If you haven't eaten here, I recommend you give it a try. read more

Big City is definitely somewhere you need to visit! Parking was definitely an issue, and we went in on a not so busy day so I could only imagine how it would be near brunch time. The food and service was great! But I felt a little conned when it came to quantity v. price. I wasn't told that there are half or full orders, although I told the lady at the front it was my first time here. Since I didn't specify, I was charged for a full (go figure) and given just that. But it was evident that one person could not finish such a large meal so I just felt like a big bag of money at that point rather than a customer. This is a really cute restaurant with awesome ambience and outdoor seeting. The food can be super awesome and good (hooray tofu scramble) - or really disappointing. The service does tend to be slow - sometimes really really slow. And I'm not tempted to hang out there because the coffee is too watery. Worst coffee in Athens in my opinion. I went to BCB for the first time for dinner on 3/31/2012 and was pleasantly surprised. I have always enjoyed their lunch and expected something similar for dinner but I was in for a surprise. The service was very good, as the young lady who waited on our table had strong knowledge of the menu and provided recommendations, but she also moved us from a table that had a problem with a leaking overhead pipe, which I would have never noticed. The food was impeccable. We had the hummus, two salads, and a flatbread entree. We shared all of the food items and everything was great. The hummus was some of the best I have had in Athens. I went to Big City for Mother's Day brunch. Got there at 11:00 am and finally got served at 12:40 pm. Service was awful and the waiter was rude and made excuses about why the food took so long. In the end the eggs were hard, biscut was burned and there was nothing good aobut the entire experience. I will never go there again. Really ruined my mother's day. read more
