I had a fantastic experience at Big Daddy's. Parking was a breeze; they have 2 public lots out back. There were 8 of us and they immediately seated us inside the restaraunt. Food was served fast and was great. The portions are HUGE! I have seen reviews where people complain about some of the dishes. Here is my suggestion, don't eat fried seafood. You are doing yourself a disservice. I had the broiled scallops and they were delicious. I followed it up with a piece of keylime pie that was top notch. We went here on the first night of vacation. We sat outside, waited much too long for service and had one of the worst meals I've ever had anywhere. I had the broiled shrimp platter at $21. My husband had grilled fish. Both were disgusting. There were so many flies on our table and surrounding us that I almost threw up. Later that night my stomach ached and the next morning I was legitimately sick - felt like food poisoning. Don't go here. Although there wasn't much of a wait, our experience was almost comical from the moment we stepped in the door. We overhead a staff member complaining about another party as a soon as we entered the restaurant. We had a very long wait to even take our order, and our appetizer was almost inedible fried pickles because they were so salty and the complimentary hush puppies were burned. We quickly noticed lots of people around us not eating their meals, and overhead one table say there food was not good. The staff seemed stressed and frantic despite not being very busy. We decided to sit it out, which we know now we shouldn't have, and while it wasn't horrible most of the food was greasy, too salty and then one party member couldn't eat their undercooked burger. This is a fairly good family seafood place while at the beach. Service was prompt although our waitress was flat and needed prodding to tell us about the signature dishes and menu descriptions. Hush puppies were served while waiting for our food and were flavorful and crisp on the outside. Decor is dated inside and dark but outside seating is bright and overlooks the bustling summer street if it's not too hot outside. This born and raised Maryland girl gives the crab cakes one thumb up and I'm a picky crab cake eater. No Old Bay flavoring but with plenty of big lumps of crab and very little filler, it gets surprisingly good marks in my book. For the sides of smashed red skin potatoes and sautéed Brussel sprouts, portion sizes are huge - get ready to take some home with you. 3 stars because there was nothing spectacular about this place. read more

The wait was 45 minutes and when they sat us in the restaurant was half empty. We were a group of 5. Four of us ordered the fish of the day which was swordfish. When the swordfish dishes came out they were completely raw inside. We had to return the dishes and re order, by that time we really did not have much of an appetite. Possibly the worst food in kure beach. My family ate their on Saturday and it was horrible. My mother got the Wahoo and it was about as dry as a piece of sheetrock. My wife and I both got burgers. I ordered mine medium rare. It came out well done. To add injury to insult I chipped a tooth eating the burger. My aunt and uncle both order a 2 choice platter with flounder and oysters. If I wasn't mistaken the flounder was not flounder but a piece of fried tilapia. It wasn't even busy and the food took almost an hour to get to us. I don't understand how a seafood restaurant at the coast could have such mediocre food. I would not recommend even wasting my time eating here. read more

Came to big daddy's during slow time (2pm) and waited over an hour for our food. During that hour, the waitress neither refilled our drinks a single time nor came to check on us and let us know what was taking so long. When the food finally did come, it was full of wrong orders. The orders they did get right were fish tacos, which contained 90% cabbage and 10% fish, and were cold. Because we didn't want to be in the restaurant any longer, we asked for the food to go. I came in for lunch today expecting a decent experience from what I have seen on the reviews. I was excited that my server was upbeat and knowledgeable about the menu! (She even got the chef to allow us to order off the dinner menu!) She joked with us throughout lunch and brought us all of our appetizers and hush puppies in a timely manner. The food was excellent as well. However, I am leaving this restaurant never to rerun because of how hateful the owner is to his employees. I asked our server who the man was thinking he was a cook or something of the sorts judging by his attire, but she told me that was the owner. This man had tattoos, long hair and a beard, and baggy clothes. Although the food was good he never came to check on us and would peer over all the servers nit picking at everything they did. I left my server such a large tip because I felt so sorry for her. Not only that but I informed her that there are many other places to work where you will not be ridiculed. So all in all, if you want good food you can find it, if you want good service I would say here is decent. If you want to see happy people in a happy work environment don't come here. Came to Big Daddy's while on vacation with my boyfriend. The reason I am giving it 3 stars is simply because we were seated outside on the patio and our table (even prior to our food arriving) had a few flies lingering around. Being not from the beach, we shrugged it off as "oh maybe because we're eating outside at the beach, the flies are more prominent here that when we eat outside in the city." However, once our appetizer arrived, the flies began swarming. Again, we tried to be easy going and understanding that we were sitting outside. Once our meals came, we were swatting flies away between bites. This is when we became annoyed and started thinking this amount of flies were abnormal even for sitting outside. I cut my burger in half and only ate half, boxed the other half up to protect from the flies. My boyfriend kept half of his rack of ribs in my to-go box to protect from the flies as well. The swarm of flies - this was our only complaint. We had an awesome server, Conner. He was super nice, helpful, made awesome menu recommendations. All of our requests like sauces and extra napkins were fulfilled. My boyfriend and I are very experienced in the service industry & I feel bad because I know Conner had a large party as well as a few other two-tops. I feel like if instead of 10 servers, they could employed some of those extra people as food runners and bussers, so that the servers can feel confident in their job instead of setting them up to not provide their best service that I know at least Conner was capable of providing. Unsuspecting tourists need to know that this place is NASTY!!!! All of their seafood was frozen. Nothing fresh or local. The salad bar was sketchy, and they did not have real butter. At those ridiculously overinflated prices, how can you not have real butter? Also, I ordered scallops (pre-frozen), and they were cooked to the texture of a lump of rubber and tasted like fish spam. Unfortunately it was overcooked and rubbery. The surf & turf was a cheap cut of steak & smallish frozen shrimp, accompanied by frozen fries. The soft shell crab was cooked well and accompanied by the famous hush puppies and an okay Cole slaw. Underwhelming presentation & off-putting flavors made for a quick and unpleasant meal. BLUF: the service was amazing, though it seems like management could improve. We stopped for dinner on our way home from the beach; the live music on the patio and the great smell drew us in. Figuring out how to be seated was a bit chaotic, and it wasn't super apparent where the hostess stand was (up the ramp in the gift shop). There was confusion about the patio seating; we were told it would be a 1hr/45 minute wait to sit outside or 30 min inside but then overheard the hostess two other people it was first come first serve. There were several empty tables on the patio, and after about 15 minutes of watching nobody be sat outside we grabbed a table. At this point my expectations for this place were pretty low. Mark was our waiter, and he completely turned our experience around. He was a fantastic server!! We ordered fried pickles (delicious and a huge serving), kids Mac and cheese, lobster Mac and cheese, and a house salad. My husband said the lobster Mac and cheese was great, and he would recommend it. The kids were happy with the Mac and cheese (I snagged some fries off of their plate and they were nice and crispy) and my house salad was your typical house salad only it was HUGE, seriously, it could probably feed about 4 vegans. After dinner we all went to the restroom (you know, road trip with kids...) and they were kinda gross (I consider this a management thing) on our way out I ended up chatting with another server, Asia, and she was extremely personable. We were in town camping at Carola Beach State Park and we drove over to get some lunch. We sat outside and were served right away. We were entertained by folks walking by and birds which were trying to get a bite to eat. I had a chicken sandwich (blackened) and fries. It was great. Sesame tuna embarrassingly bad, had a bad oyster, chowder was too buttery and not good, ribs were fairly gross, my son liked his shrimp tacos, and fried pickles were fine. Disgusting at best. This used to be a wonderful place to eat but it has new owners, it has too. I took my 82 yo Mom to Kure Beach for Mothers Day. She cant get around real good so I had to get it to go. It cost us $56 without drinks. We got 2 pieces of baby flounder each, Mom got oysters and i order Jumbo shrimp. I got 12 med shrimp at best. The cole slaw was horrendous and the roasted potatoes were fair (They were out of baked potatoes). I would have been better served to have thrown the money away and gotten us a pack of NABS to enjoy as this was one of the biggest disappointments I have ever seen and the privilege of it cost me nearly $60. I feel so bad the old owners decades of hard work that were washed out to sea with the Kure Beach tide. Horrible experience. read more

I used to come here years ago with my family while on vacation, decided to come back and try it again, and it was the worst decision of my entire vacation. The food was horrible! I ordered catfish, mahi and scallops (blackened), it tasted as though it was all boiled and then given a dash of seasoning. The scallops were flavorless and the fish didn't even taste like fish. It was the most bland, tasteless seafood I've ever had. Long john silvers would put this place to shame, and that is obscene because this restaurant is less than 200 yards from the ocean. I wouldn't even use Big Daddy's food as bait! By far the best part of my meal was the French fries, yes the best part of my seafood meal at a seafood restaurant was the fries! That's pathetic!! I will say that the server was very polite and timely and the manager did the best he could for us, I cannot make a bad remark about them, but that was a horrible excuse for seafood. In short, if you feel like having a crappy, over priced slop of a meal, Big Daddy's is your place, if you want better seafood, Jack Mackerel's is on the other corner and for better hush puppies the pier house is a block away. read more

We have eaten at Big Daddy's every year that we come to the beach...so much that the kids look forward to it as a family tradition. We will never be eating there again. Sweet baby Jesus, our meal tonight was disgusting! First off, the service was terrible...it took at least an hour to get our food. Granted, we ordered some appetizers, and they were pretty good (wings and fried artichokes). But after that, we sat... and sat... and sat. When the food finally came out, several orders were just plain wrong. My mom ordered fried oysters and blackened flounder and got fried shrimp and flounder. We never got the oysters at all. Several plates were supposed to come with vegetables and got cole slaw instead. My mom and dad both got flounder and said that it was inedible...we figured out later that it had been microwaved. I got "blackened shrimp" which was really overcooked sautéed shrimp thrown with an incredible amount of salt. My crab cake just tasted off...the frozen crab cakes at Costco are much, much better. And the "seasonal fresh vegetables" are those watery frozen Birds Eye ones. Several people at our table got fried shrimp, and it literally tasted of nothing but old oil. We have been gone from the restaurant for an hour and a half now, and I can still taste it in my mouth. Believe me, I don't post a lot of bad reviews, and it sucks to post it about this place which I always looked forward to. I can't believe how far downhill it has gone. Here's the kind of comical thing about it...this place must employ half the population of Kure Beach. There were about 15 people walking around the dining room like their hair was on fire, but no one seemed to actually be doing anything of importance. The dining room was nowhere near filled, but no one had food. Every once in a while, someone would walk out of the kitchen with this tiny basket of hushpuppies. The servers kept walking around saying "It will be out in a minute!" to anyone that would listen. Um, ok. But when our food was disgusting, all of a sudden the manager "was busy doing something else." Also slightly hilarious: My dad ordered a beer...first one came out just fine. The second one, they were apparently out. So this guy we had never seen before walks out of the kitchen, carrying a case of lukewarm Coronas, plops it down on an empty booth, opens the box with a box cutter and just basically throws it at Dad. Ehhhk. We so wished we had gone across the street to some place else. This place was bright, noisy, stuffy, loud and the food was just not good. 4 meals and only my Salmon was acceptable and even that plate only the fish was good. Had to leave the potatoes and mushy vegetables. Parents fared worse with their fried combo plates that had fish fillet so thin you could not get the breading off. I would say on par with a very cheap buffet except this was way overpriced. We left hungry and with bill shock. Service was friendly but also horrible. Neglected 15 minutes when we sat down then neglected until long after we pushed our plates aside. We wont be back. read more
