Service was great, quick and polite. Food is good ol' southern comfort food. Chicken and pastry was light on the chicken but tasty. Nice to have fruit as a dessert option if pudding or cobbler isn't calling you. The menu is super flexible, something for anyone. read more

The service is fast and friendly, the value received is good, and the ice tea is dark, strong, and actually tastes like tea. The food, unfortunately, is distinctly meh. The day's special, chicken pastry, was far too salty. The butter beans lived up to their name. Their texture was buttery soft but they also were over salted. Deviled eggs weren't bad but the pickle brine used in the filling had a strong cinnamon note. The fried chicken was described to me as dry. Banana pudding, which came with the meal, was served pleasantly warm but had neither meringue nor whipped cream. We don't see many restaurants like this anymore - straightforward Southern home cooking, the kind you used to see at meat 'n threes all over NC. It's too bad that Big Ed's no longer seems to be doing their part in maintaining that legacy. read more

From time to time, I have ordered takeout from here. What won me over is their fried catfish and creamy grits. On this occasion, I was really disappointed in the grits. When I arrived to pickup my lunch order (breakfast for lunch), it still wasn't quite ready. Then when I got back to work, I discovered how they were able to expedite things after my arrival. The grits tasted like they added some instants grits to the already cooked grits and it had a powdery uncooked taste to the texture. Everything else was fine, but I couldn't eat the grits. read more

Old school looking breakfast joint. The menu has a lot of options. I went for the country ham and cheddar omelette. Came with toast and a choice of starch (I went with grits). Ham was the a bit salty, but I knew country ham was salty so cool with me. Plenty of cheese as well. One note, I think the omelettes are cooked on a flattop so they come out thin. No issue for me. Visited Big Ed's for the first time after many positive reviews read. I'll have to agree, with what I've read. Very busy, staff very friendly and attentive with good eats. I ordered the catfish , spiced apples and an egg with orange juice. I very much enjoyed my meal. I was able to carry a portion of it home to eat for later as the catfish was pretty sizable. There were 8 of us that met for breakfast at 7:30 on 21FEB2026 at Big Ed's North. Linda greeted us warmly as we arrived even though she was called in last minute to work. When asked what she recommended, she said, "Bacon! Everything is better with bacon!" Linda kept our coffee filled and our orders delivered quickly. When one of the guys received his to go order, she said, "Meals on Wheels!" We are a men's group that walk at Falls Lake Saturday mornings, but the 2026 weather has not been cooperative, so we have been meeting for breakfast. Of the places we have eaten this year, the food and service at Big Ed's has been the best option! Bacon! I had enough of the meat omelet to bring home as well as their awesome fluffy biscuits!!! Decided to try this place for breakfast. Not too busy when we got there a little after 9:30. Their menu is not too large and I decided on a cheese omelette with a side of bacon and home fries and sourdough toast. The omelette was nothing special and the eggs were ok. I did ask for crispy bacon but it was way too crispy and not that flavorful. The potatoes were nice and crispy and they gave you enough of them to feed the entire family. Now the toast!! They have an up charge for sourdough toast The toast did not taste any different than regular toast. When we got the bill I was surprised to see that the up charge was $3.00. That's insane. My daughter and I visited Big Ed's North Restaurant on May 27, 2026 @ 6p.m.. We placed our order with our waitress. She was very professional and courteous. The food arrived and we were very pleased at first. My daughter ordered pancakes which Ed's is known for. As we began to eat, my daughter noticed that her pancakes was not to her liking so she sent back to the kitchen. This is were the problem began. The cook got upset and made the comment that "Fat Ass" toward my table and my daughter heard him and the other cooks laughing when she looked up. I immediately called the waitress over and got the manager. I never got the opportunity to speak with the cook about his comment but did want to let it be known that his comment was heard. This kind of behavior is sickening and so disrespectful. I pray that this individual will be held accountable for his actions!!! 5/6/23: First time here. It was packed with people graduating, which was awesome to see. We waited quite awhile for a table, but we finally got one. I looked over the menu and decided to keep it simple by ordering pancakes and bacon. My friend had grits, eggs, biscuits, and a spicy sausage patty. He loved his food because he eats anything and was starving. My pancakes had a weird taste to them and the bacon was cold and soggy. I wasn't very impressed. We went to the register to pay and saw the sign that if paying with card, we would be charged a surcharge. Would've been nice to know that ahead of time, but anywho. Lots of great food! You won't go away hungry. You know it's good when the older generation loves the place as well as the up and coming! My daughter asked me if I'd like something so they suggested pancakes. One pancake filled the Togo box! It was such fun! And affordable! If you dine inside it is spacious well decorated and also nice shops to visit as you exit. They keep the great service coming and really listen. My husband is so impressed with the food and quantity! He loves the fried fish and their corn bread is to live for! No skimping here! They want you to be happy The waitresses are invested and take such good care as well as have stories. Big Ed's is charming in its own way as a nostalgic southern breakfast spot. However... it's just not that great when you really drill down. The food is greasy diner food. The pancakes are immense, but so dense and dry that you feel like a cement mixer walking out of the place. The coffee is thin and acidic. Great place to take the grandparents and definitely an experience in its own right, but it's just a diner, and not really exceptional at all. read more

If you like a classic country breakfast, you'll love big Ed's. The staff are kind and it gives local Cracker Barrel vibes. The hotcakes are huge and most won't be able to eat more than one. They even have a challenge to eat 3 in 45 mins for a t shirt. I definitely couldn't do that my favorite thing here is the corned beef hash. It's just too damn good. Perfectly flavorful and it goes well with either eggs and toast or French toast. You can't go wrong with any choice! The only thing I haven't been loving is their biscuits, but I still get them occasionally. I would love if they changed the recipe on that one because then everything would be great. Unusual pancakes that are large, thick, and dense; one is a meal. Cons: expensive for what it is; meat servings in particular can be small. Canned sodas are annoying with no refills (opt instead for the excellent sweet tea). Can be loud and crowded on weekends. Pancakes are an acquired taste. read more

This was my first visit to Big Ed's but it definitely won't be the last! I want to start with the amazing service we received from our server Ashley. Top notch service! I went with the oysters and they were truly the best I've ever had. My mom had the catfish and she loved them. We both had the mashed potatoes with gravy and coleslaw. We really enjoyed both. Thankfully, Big Ed's is open at full capacity in our post pandemic world. Food is as good as ever. However service is lackluster. I don't believe it is 100% the result of the current labor shortage most places are currently experiencing (but I'm sure it is part of the problem.) I've gone here twice in recent weeks, once for breakfast and once for lunch. Knowing how popular Big Ed's is and how busy it can be at certain times, I intentionally went early (7 am for breakfast and 11 am for lunch). Both times the food delivery to my table was much a much longer than normal wait. Not helping the situation was the cashier. (She was there both times.) At the breakfast meal she also had to seat me, and acted put off when I didn't want to sit at the counter. Lady never smiled or acted like she appreciated my business. read more
