I gave Barry's Cafe a try for a weekday breakfast. It's a typical breakfast cafe with a fire-fighter theme. My breakfast burrito arrived at the table hot and was good. The hash browns, deep-fried frozen potato cubes, were served hot but should have stayed in the fryer for a while longer as they were undercooked and too starchy. Service was great until my meal arrived, then the server stopped paying attention to me and did not refill my drink at the time I needed a refill the most. Barry's Cafe absolutely needs to make a reasonable profit, but it also needs to provide a reasonable value to its Customers. Here's where Barry's fell short: after taxes and credit-card fees, my burrito and beverage was over $20. With a mandated 18% tip, I walked out of the door having spent $23.95 . All in all, I felt it was a very poor value. There was nothing sufficiently compelling about Barry's Cafe to make me return. read more

This restaurant is a great find for short-order, diner food--particularly breakfast., Christy was my waitress. She was extremely warm, charming and attentive. I sat at the counter, which has round swivel stools. I ordered their Firehouse breakfast. Maybe best tasting pancakes I've ever had! It was their plain pancake--delicious. Perfectly cooked sunny side up eggs, crispy bacon, perfect grits, couldn't asked for a better breakfast. Coffee was delicious--pot said Maxel House. They provided sugar free syrup at my request. I want to start by saying, we really liked the restaurant and food was great! Their gluten free bread was really good also. The reason for the 3 star review though is solely based on our experience with the waitress. When we ordered I ordered their Turkey club, hella good btw, and asked for gluten free bread. I then asked for the french fries. Her body language and attitude immediately changed very aggressively and replied, "I can't give you that" I asked why, and she said "because they're fried in the same oil as other things". I then tried to explain that I have more of a gluten intolerance and would be fine. I live with it and know my body. "She then got even more rude and defensive and said " Well I will not be responsible if you get sick then" I have never been treated like that over gluten before. Great pancakes and omelets. A cozy atmosphere with extensive wall decorations supporting the local firefighters. You come here for the local vibe and the comfort food. It's in a typical shopping plaza, and all the store signs have the same font and color. It's near the grocery store. Also, if you ever wonder about paying the extra $1.75 to add blueberries or other toppings to your pancakes, do it. I echo a few of the other comments when it comes to the food being good but nothing to write home about at all and the undertone of who feels "welcomed" - I will get back to that part. I would say IHOP or even Denny's would have more "flavor" with their food. I understand that it's a really popular spot for the location as I remember growing up and seeing a lot of the older community dinning there. The waitress was a very kind young lady. She was very helpful in navigating the menu to make sure we got something we would truly enjoy. She would keep tabs on us during our dining experience and made sure to top off my coffee and the other's drinks during our visit. I ordered the Veggie omelet with a side of hash browns (roasted potatoes) and wheat toast (buttered). My wife got the special that provided eggs, meat, bread, and a side (she got grits). The food was fresh and hot - but it needed something. It was if they didn't season it even with salt and pepper! So, I asked for some type of seasoning, the waitress provided they had Cajun seasoning, I told her that was would be fine. Sadly, it was the saving grace to the meal lol because HONEY where is the seasoning! As we were talking with our friends, an older woman walks up and asks us if we enjoyed the food and if we needed boxes? She started to remove dishes from the table and you could see our waitress hurry to our table as if to say "can you please not do that?". At that point, we got the hint. Disappointing this time around. The BLT with extra lettuce came with a single lettuce leaf. Both the fries and particularly the onion rings were so oily as to be awful. The restaurant smelled greasy. The service, only the other hand, was delightful... informative, attentive, and really focused on our experience. This Irish lassie noted the uneaten pile of rings, asked if I didn't like them, and immediately took them off the bill, and said she'd pass the info on to the kitchen. Barry's is really cute but I didn't think the food was that good! I liked the service and I thought the decorations were good. It was easy to park and get a table, even on the weekend! There is a fire house / fireman theme, and it is cool how there are badges and license plates from fire departments all over the country. However, I did not like the food! I ordered hash browns and (as you can see in my picture) I got roasted potatoes. The potatoes seemed like regular frozen roasted potatoes. I'd rather have some fresh juicy potatoes, and I'd like more seasoning. I also got some apple sauce, and the apple sauce was store bought and they didn't even take it out of the cup. I only got apple sauce because they literally had no other fruit available on the menu (except for fruit inside of the pancakes). My eggs and toast were fine. The prices have SKYROCKETED! Great diner environment, solid food but it's now ridiculously expensive. $17 for a salad with chicken on it? I think my egg, sausage & cheese biscuit was $10. My husband and I were in Raleigh for a hockey game earlier this year. While in the hotel room, I was browsing places to have breakfast. This placed popped up with good reviews and was close by. This was a complete welcomed surprise! My husband is a firefighter and when we walked into the restaurant, we were inundated with firefighter memorabilia. Great spot if you are looking for a home cooked vibe for brunch. Menu is simple and filled with great choices/options. Barry's has a great backstory of establishing a not-for-profit foundation, called Feed the Firefighters, which would provide food and beverages to firefighters and emergency personnel (story on menu). I had the Reuben with a side of coleslaw and 1/2 & 1/2 tea. First observation of the sandwich is the bread!! Great jewish rye grilled with a great crunch. The corned beef was a nice slice of meat, not tough, and piled on nicely. Sauerkraut & swiss oozed from the sammich! And buh-less their hearts for not dousing it in dressing. It was just enough to compliment the sandwich the way it's meant to. Coleslaw!!! Purrrrrfect! You can taste the cabbage. It was a light mayonnaise, not vinegary, not overly wet (swimming), with a great peppery back. (I love coleslaw and Barrys gets 2 thumbs up). Stopped here in a Raleigh during a volleyball tournament. Feels like the locals fill this place up and that's usually a good sign. We were seated immediately (party of 5). Coffee was plentiful and food was good. Prices were as expected for this type of restaurant. Themed in fire department support, so pretty cool to support those who serve us. Can order breakfast or lunch all day which is nice for someone who doesn't love breakfast food. Firehouse breakfast comes with a huge pancake or waffle. Omelets look really good. Definitely felt unwelcome here, came with my family. Waited 10 minutes before even being addressed and then immediately spoke to my white partner, before acknowledging the rest of my family. My father who is a huge fan of memorabilia was interested in walls and was understandably recording the interesting decorations. The manager, an ununiformed older woman immediately came to our table and said to me, "It's illegal in North Carolina to record people's faces." First of all my father is fluent in English and she could of asked him directly, and she could have simply asked us to not take pictures, and we would have been happy to oblige, instead immediately threatening us with legal action. I don't know what's going on with this place, but from the other reviews there is a clear theme that if you're asian or hispanic you're not welcome here. Which is truly sad because I love the message and support for emergency workers that Barry's Cafe is supposed to represent. That said, no one needs a 13 dollar breakfast burrito. read more

Cheese omelette, wheres the cheese?Very little cheese on the inside, basically scrambled eggs with some cheese on top. Buttered rye toast with a glob of melted butter in the center of the bread. There are plenty of restaurants doing this. The food was absolutely subpar. The sausages were anemic. The toast, pearically burnt. The kids pancakes were loaded with cinnamon (not advertisements) and very under done. Hidden charges and overall expensive for the quality of food received. Kids drink is not included in price. Some would think that one egg, bacon and potatoes couldn't be difficult but I've been to lots of places that overcooked or undercooked a poached egg; mine was perfect. Lots of places throw strips of bacon on a plate; mine were crispy and delicious. And the potatoes--crispy but pillowy inside. My companion had the corned beef hash and grits. He loved his food; even for someone who doesn't care for grits, he raved about them.
